I get the sentiment, but sharks are high enough on the food chain that a lot of our man-made crap ends up in their meat. Spiny dogfish are lower than albacore tuna and halibut, but they still often have concerning levels of mercury. Unfortunately, animals can't escape our crap and neither can we.
Hey!!! Part of your video here about the baby sharks made it into someone else's video!! It's by the squeezed lemon and the title is close to "this lioness gave birth to 29 cubs and then this happen" not sure if I got the word for word or not but you should definitely be able to find it from the info I gave you!! What an amazing experience that you had with catching the flounder first and then the shark. Then the shark gives birth and you save them. How cool that you were able to clean, cook and eat the shark.
I'm gonna have to try that recipe!! Growing up here I was always told Dogfish were no good to eat... As for those 6 babies, I hope they run into a school of hungry Chinook lol Keep up the awesome videos Lief!!
LOL 😂 I’m just imagining them swimming off into a big school of Chinook!!! And try it out! Some people soak the meat in milk first for 24h to get rid of possible mild ammonia flavor. And can’t wait to show more! Got some amazing ideas brewing 🎣🎥
I think we soaked them in salt for a period of time. Also have heard of the milk method but it doesn't seem like you need to by how you like the taste just rinsing it. It brings back memories of when we would go crabbing and catch those 3ft+ sharks off the jetty. I remember one of my first ones I caught with a 300 lb braided catfish leader, fish and hook in its stomach. It was cut like it was a pair of scissor. I borrowed the same leader to land it from the guy who lost the fish. I switched to steel leader from that point on.

Those things are all my dad ever seemed to catch xD He always threw them back though and I guess he didn't know they were good eating. That or he just didn't want to risk getting hit by their barbs. So I grew up always thinking they were trash fish that would just gobble up all the bait... fishing olympia area btw.
I honestly was a bit scared for the sacks cause I thought they might break when the babies hit the water but I'm glad they were all safe and back where they belong
Spaced Out Claspers are not penises .They are merely external structures designed for the purpose of more secure contact. There is no internal structure similar to a urethra that is found in mammals in the claspers. Now snakes are different matter, they have what is called a hemi-penis, not two per se but one that has a divided head. Lucky bastards.

Love your channel and subscribed today after watching the first video of yours I’d ever seen. This is the second video I’ve seen and I learned something from it, the “easy way” and I’ll explain how. I’ve been a fisherman since I was around 4 years old, fishing for bluegills and perch in the lakes of Wisconsin with my parents. I was “hooked” on fishing at a very early age. After highschool I moved to Berkeley, California and lived on my sailboat. Of course, I needed to figure out how to fish in salt-water now and caught lots of Capazone and Rubber-lip perch with my fishing buddies from work. Then I sailed to Hawaii and lived there for the last 35 years. Of course, fishing the entire time. Trolling for huge Tuna and feisty Mahi Mahi on my buddy’s fishing boat. As of two years ago, I’m now in Seattle. (Got tired of the relentless heat in Hawaii). So as usual, I met a buddy from work who liked to fish and has lived in Seattle his entire life. He showed me his favorite fishing spots I’m sure you’ll recognize. Green Lake, Lake Washington, and the famous Puget Sound. I live downtown Seattle two blocks from the Sound and it was salmon season last fall so we went to a pier at the waterfront hoping to catch a salmon with herring as bait. It was dark by now and we had caught a couple small rockfish that were illegal to keep from the pier. Everywhere I go, I research the fishing regulations and always have the proper licensing. Never been a poacher and I care about the future of recreational fishing, the rules make sense, and I obey them. It’s not like I’ll starve if I don’t catch a legal fish. My pole started bucking and it was something big and my buddy yelled it was probably a salmon. I didn’t think salmon fed at night so I doubted my buddy’s assessment. Sure enough, it was a spiny dogfish. Right around the size of the one you caught on this video. Here’s where I learned something from you, the “easy way”. I hauled the little shark up on the pier and of course it’s going nuts. I’ve caught sharks before and so I pinned it down gently and removed the hook. Then I released it back into the Sound. What I didn’t know is that it has poisonous spines. Never even heard of a shark with poisonous spines. I didn’t get stabbed by the spines I didn’t even know were there, so I got lucky. Haven’t caught a spiny dogfish since then but if I do, I know now to watch out for those spines. Thanks brother. I haven’t caught my first salmon yet either, but that day is coming soon. Love your channel and since I intend to live in the wonderful Seattle area from here on out, your channel is my new favorite fishing channel. Peace and aloha from a new subscriber and Seatteite. 🤙🏼
Heyhey! Thank you so much for commenting! I am absolutely in the works to do a river episode! I will be out filming tomorrow morning actually......... Stay tuned!
No reason to feel guilty. Those baby sharks feed on small organisms after birth and the mothers have almost no maternal instinct. Such is the circle of life. If it wasn't you, it would be a different creature. Those babies have the same chances of survival regardless of whether you caught the doe or not.
Dylan this is not the circle of life, life is animals doing there thing without anyone messing them up. Re fact that they fish them out of the water, out of nowhere, in the middle of enjoying there life, then dieting is not nature

A story they will tell for a long time 😝 🎣 Thanks for the kind words Jacob, and it's so cool hearing you're sharing my channel with your friends!
those type of sharks don't really stay with their mothers that long, and I would have personally took them home, and kept two of them, and like a hundred gallon tank, and found the rest of them really goodhomes, because I did catch one one time and kept it, but I also killed it, by mistake, it lasted five years, and I have really big rocks in there for decoration, and I was changing the water, and one of therocks, well I had the net in there to get the shark out, I had drained the tank down to maybe 1/4 of the hundred gallon was still full, so I was trying to get the shark in the neck, and he went behind one of my big rocks, so I tried to move it out the way, and the way he went to high, the rock fell on him, witch turns him upside down, and as we all know they can't be upside down at all, it immediately sensed toxics to their brain, they can't even think of how to get their selves over, that's how killer whales kill great white sharks, they go for them and turn them upside down, that's the way they kill stingrays as well
@@charlesjeffery1155 I’ve killed too many fish by accident. They’re so sensitive to literally anything! That’s pretty cool. How big do they get in a tank though? And that’s wild. I love learning about fish it’s a cool hobby.

That’s what I love about this you know what’s going into the meat and you know where it came from and you made it 100% yourself amazing.
I would have preferred to private message you this but I didn't have that option obviously... either way... wanted you to know!!! And p.s. me & my daughter watch you all the time!!

Did u know that sharks have two penises? I found that out and I feel kinda stupid bc claspers IS PLURAL

Lmaoo I love that “gave it a couple bonks on the head”
Thanks for trying to save the baby sharks you are the best can't wait for the next video
But kill the mom bro wtf with that moral
No reason to feel guilty. Those baby sharks feed on small organisms after birth and the mothers have almost no maternal instinct. Such is the circle of life. If it wasn't you, it would be a different creature. Those babies have the same chances of survival regardless of whether you caught the doe or not.
Thanks, that's pretty much what I've concluded since. Did what I could 👍
They are an IUCN vulnerable species. That's the only reason he should feel guilty.
Dylan this is not the circle of life, life is animals doing there thing without anyone messing them up. Re fact that they fish them out of the water, out of nowhere, in the middle of enjoying there life, then dieting is not nature

Omg that’s so sad 😭 they might not survive without the mom to my knowledge. They’re sooo adorable as babies
those type of sharks don't really stay with their mothers that long, and I would have personally took them home, and kept two of them, and like a hundred gallon tank, and found the rest of them really goodhomes, because I did catch one one time and kept it, but I also killed it, by mistake, it lasted five years, and I have really big rocks in there for decoration, and I was changing the water, and one of therocks, well I had the net in there to get the shark out, I had drained the tank down to maybe 1/4 of the hundred gallon was still full, so I was trying to get the shark in the neck, and he went behind one of my big rocks, so I tried to move it out the way, and the way he went to high, the rock fell on him, witch turns him upside down, and as we all know they can't be upside down at all, it immediately sensed toxics to their brain, they can't even think of how to get their selves over, that's how killer whales kill great white sharks, they go for them and turn them upside down, that's the way they kill stingrays as well
@@charlesjeffery1155 I’ve killed too many fish by accident. They’re so sensitive to literally anything! That’s pretty cool. How big do they get in a tank though? And that’s wild. I love learning about fish it’s a cool hobby.
