Why do they always do this at the hip abductor machine?

  • Girls often lean forward when they do this machine and its honestly insane how well it works. My ass hurt really bad and what I think is that it mimicks a fire hydrant with weight, takes tension off of the lateral hips and isolates the upper glutes more

    The further you lean forward past 90 degrees, the more that the lower subgroup of the glute max, which runs from the sacrum to the backside of the femur, lines up horizontally into an efficient lever arm for hip abduction. The upper subgroup of the glute max also become more favorable to abduction here, though that's not their primary function. That's what most people are feeling when they do it this way.
    But the upper glute muscles, the medius and minimus, are less favored low down. The tfl is too, though it really isn't a strong abductor at 90 degrees either.
    Both positions are good, just good for different things. For most people, 90 degrees is more sensible (glute med and minimus are your biggest day-to-day abductors and the medius development is likely better for longterm gait health), but if you are looking for an extra exercise to change things up for your glute max, especially if you want to target the lower subgroup, then lean on in. Or even do both.

      Incorrect. Best exercise for the glutes (medius Maximus and minimus) are standing cable kickbacks with toes turned towards center line.
      Hip flexion will shorten the minimus and medius due to their insertions on the leg. while the Maximus will be lengthened due to its location and insertion at the leg. So hip abductors and adductors should actually be done with 0 hip flexion for maximum lengthening

    Some girls claim they can feel it more on the sides of their glutes (ie. Hip dip area). But I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work better for me. I prefer to use the machine the way it’s designed. But that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Interesting, thank you for your input scholar. I definitely feel it in both positions. I think a large portion depends on small differences in anatomy, leg length flexibility etc.

      I can only feel it leaning forward. I have huge hip dips and this was the missing piece to filling them in. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    Lean forward for more glute activation, lean back is more IT BAND, either way both get worked though, like dips, depends how you do it, i use foam pads to add 2inchs of ROM, and I'm a guy some say this is a girl machine but thats ppl not man enough to do it, plus who cares what gym ppl think, most of them will quit and im still going and being consistent

      I have IT band Syndrome, and doin glute abduction is so good , it reliefs me from pain. I trait doing the incline, and I felt it did not work for my IT band.

    I feel my ass almost cramping sitting normally, doing very slow eccentrics. Also, i push out as far as i possibly can and then help with my hands to push a little further. When i release, i catch the weight and do a slow eccentric. 15 reps and my ass is on fire. I guess pushing the ROM by helping with your hands is a very good way of doing a lot of damage to your muscles.
