This is incredible!!!!!! Psych wards are SOOO UGLY! I was treated in a psych ward last summer for about a week and all they had were these crappy wireless headsets with one radio station, the walls were blank, and the staff there tried to play movies in the group room, and they never got them to actually play, so we watched the ONE channel that we could get which played Iron Man 2 over and over again. It was comically uncomfortable. Some annoying things I understood were for safety, but mostly it was just an unnecessary amount of discomfort when I was already uncomfortable and afraid. I even made the joke to a few people that it felt like the strategy was to make me more grateful for what I had by taking away every ounce of potential pleasure.
after rotating on an inpatient psych unit as an m4, i totally agree that they can be ugly and suck. this initiative looks amazing and ill def be emailing u guys to get involved!
In nursing school we referred to this concept as developing a "milieu" for psychological well-being in psychiatric care...and then you go to work in an average hospital where that idea is just thrown out the window. Honestly, love this idea, love you guys for doing this. Hospitals are ugly. #MakeHospitalsPrettyForOnce
You are the man Preston. Seriously an masterclass on what it is to be a considerate and humble human. Please never stop making content and showing us your setbacks and successes
This is something I feel very very deeply about, and indeed always imagined doing if I ever got into hospital management. Although not in the psych ward, as a cancer patient my mother spent most of her last few months at chemo wards, and the hospital “milieu” and walls were drab and depressing to say the least. Even then, I wished to help put her in an environment that was at least slightly more conducive to achieving a calmer and happier state during such a difficult time for her (be that through surrounding plants, music, the colors of the walls, wall art, LIGHTING- literally a primary reason for hospital-delirium, etc.) I’m so happy you guys have achieved this. Many congratulations to you both, and best wishes on the success of your non-profit! This is amazing 🫂🫶🏻🏩 Also, Dr Preston, it is inspiring to witness the compassion you possess, not only through your shared patient interactions and poignant advice, but also the wonderful effort you’ve put in through this endeavor, which I’m sure has inspired this young student as well.
The psych ward of our hospital looks like one of those Horror Film ones. Mostly because they mostly treat drug induced psychosis, so the inventory is destroyed faster than it can be replaced. When I worked there as I nursing student I had patients kicking in the locker doors, headbutting the bullet proofed glass windows or just running head first trought wood doors while beeing chased by the understaffed ward nurses. Mostly because in my country we are very conservative on restraining so you have to do A LOT before getting restrained or heavily medicated
I think you guys will actually have a lot of luck reaching out to businesses directly once you’re up and running, as seeing their products associated with improving psych wards is good PR
local youth arts organizations, local high school art classes, close to whichever hospital you're working with - possible places to start with getting free murals up in hospitals, could have a design contest and print decals that you can mass produce on a larger scale...this is prob 60% of why i'm in peds so i can be in a pretty hospital... every year i fund raise to get fresh cut flowers for the new year for every patient in the psych hospital i rotated at as a third year, every year we meet our fund raising goal. people care and want to be taught how to treat others with dignity and look at medicine for better or usually worse as an example... this will be a great outlet and sounds awesome
ps recently when a family member was sick, i bought a large orchid and stuck it in the bedside toilet, made everyone who came into the room cackle and lightened the mood so much. plants are so healing !!
YES PLEASE Is there a listserv we can join to stay in the loop on updates (website going up, specific campaigns, etc.)? Or do we need to keep an eye on your channel here? (I'll do that anyway but more likely to catch updates on a listserv)
Edit: I think it's Unfinished Apparel, but it's possible I'm thinking of a diff one and there's just multiple now. But still!! Y'all should team up with that company working to get fun, printed, positive sweats sets sent to psych wards to replace those atrocious and degrading paper outfits!!
This is great, but I think one thing you should figure out how to avoid is having your non profit help for-profit healthcare spend even less on psych wards (because they’re getting it for free from your non profit) and just further siphoning funds to investors. I think the non profit needs to somehow challenge the status quo rather than making it more comfortable
I’m a plant in a propagation vessel, waiting to be stabilized to finally be in the garden. I wrote that one down, love it. I hope the non profit goes well.🤍
