Don and Vic might have used pomegranate grenadine, but I reckon many drinks from the first half of the 20th century, such as the "El Presidente", probably used grenadine made from essences.
@@Stephen_Curtin that is actually 100% accurate. Pre-prohibition cocktails such as the Jack Rose and El Presidente most likely used clove-pink grenadine and not pomegranate grenadine.
Great to see another video! That is a ton of lemon juice- I hope this means either you are about to have a party, or you are planning on a ton of videos in the next day or so! At the end of the day- I want a cocktail that taste good- more important then authenticity!
Thank you for another great video! I often suspect a lot of these older recipes aren't that great/don't translate to the modern palate for the simple reason that everyone smoked like chimneys in the 30s and 40s when these tiki classics were created, and people couldn't actually taste them accurately as a result!
I make all of them. If seeing those is something you’re interested in let me know. I didn’t do them in this video cuz I didn’t want it to be 30 minutes long lol My salt solution is 20%
Wonder if the quality of the rums or could it be we revere the older recipes because of history reason. But remember some recipes are for restaurants, or the college crowd :P I need to try your version of this recipe
@@stephane.foisy.186 I mean, Hamilton 86 is pretty standard for aged Demerara and you can’t get much better than Bacardi 8 for a gold Puerto Rican rum. I def think there is some reverence because “it’s the way Donn, or Vic, or Mariano, made it” But also science has happened in the last 90 years… so maybe it’s time to see if there are different approaches.
I definitely have to try this :)

Good to see a new video. I like the new background, by the way.
@@TimBaker thanks. Still trying to work it all out.
I have a bottle of Darcy’s grenadine essence but haven’t used it yet. This sounds like a good reason to finally give it a try. Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome. I’d love to hear what you think if you ever get around to trying it.
Awesome to see your findings on pomegranate vs clove pink grenadine!
I definitely preferred it in a side by side of an El Presidente
@@madman2572 yea I def need to try that one as well.

Doesn’t mean the concept behind them and structure are bad. They just need a little tweaking for our more modern sophisticated palette
@@MixingUpTiki For sure! It's always a lot of fun to play around with something and make it your own.
I personally add a 1/4 oz of Allspice Dram to the Shrunken Skull. It needs the complexity and the spice plays well with the grenadine.
@@brandonsanchez9453 I can def see that working.
Then I always ask the question, at which point is it no longer a shrunken skull?
Do you make your own tinctures and extracts, or buy them somewhere? Also, what percentage is your salt solution?
