It is an intended lie in a court of law that permits it! We cannot expect law & truth in a court of laws that does not adhere to truth and its' law of constants.
The court negotiates & changes truth & laws & the consequences for breaking laws. It is a lawless court & it preserves & protects the defenses' lies!
There is no law when bargains are made to decrease the severity of its' penalties. There is no law when some are sworn to tell the truth & others are protected when they lie.
There is no law that allows the one who confesses guilt to submit the lie that they are not guilty after wards.
If it makes you mad, stop allowing it. Stop protecting & preserving your own right to lie & start standing on the truth that the criminal & especially, the defense attorney is not allowed to lie, suggest lies or submit lies to the court!
Society allows this to preserve their right to do it. In no way should there be a freedom to lie, especially in court!
Every criminal act starts with a lie!

Speaking broken English (or any language that isn't your native language) to someone in a casual setting is completely different than trying to speak broken English in a setting where every word you say is held under scrutiny. I know hundreds of words in Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, and I could probably scribble some sentences together if I was speaking to someone who spoke those languages, but put me in an interrogating room in any country where those are the official languages, and you bet I'm asking for an English translator and speaking direct English.

He would have to know some. Just from being around locals, that are his bosses at work. Then there's the fact that most Iowans don't speak Spanish so he would need to know basic English to be able to do any shopping or dining. Point being he would need to know basic English to get by.
I doubt he would know enough to be able to communicate during an interrogation though.
