    Plants aren't relaxing if they are a burden, dominate your space, or get neglected because of time or lost in the jungle. I went from 75 to 50 to 26. 50 is manageable, but 26 is perfect! I gave away loads to friends or distributed them amongst the local plant libraries where people set up tables or shelves in their gardens, advertise them on facebook and local plant groups, and people can come and trade or just donate them. Keep to what you can manage and what you truly love, and stop trying to keep up with instagram!
    Also... Hell yeah! I'm a systemic pesticide user and proud! Greta can come fight me about it!

    Because we are being honest, there is a handful of plants I abandoned. BUT! I liked the look of them and idea of them. I did not like how high maintenance they were, or how they only looked good for 5 minutes a year, or how much time and emotions they cost me. So I bought some fakes and they are mixed in with all the real plants. There are some fake plants that look really real.

    It's wonderful that you have mentioned underplanting. My plants have started doing it by themselves, spreading to the places they like, and I took the hint. If not for underplanting, a lot of the plants would not be part of my garden anymore. Some plants are just never happy in a personal pot by themselves but thrive in combinations, especially ground covering plants. My brightest example is episcias. I would stop bothering myself with caladiums long ego because of their dormancy periods, but I just figured out to plant something else in the same pot (usually a coleus).

  • @Hollywiththeflowers
    @Hollywiththeflowers 2 місяці тому

    Great advice there, especially to let go of a plant that isn’t thriving for you. It’s a freeing thing to do that, I thank the plant for its service & try and think of it in terms of how you would treat a bunch of cut flowers. You enjoyed them, but they won’t last forever.
    I’ve totally had plant burnout over the summer of ‘24 I have too many plants in the garden and too many in the house. Once the thrips decided to move into my precious orchids I felt so overwhelmed. I agree with you that thrips are the most evil little monsters. They are so much harder to eradicate than anything else.
    It’s ironic that a hobby you start to destress with, can turn out so stressful!

    On collecting- I try to avoid "collecting" bc I have been trying to view my plants more as household members more than "a collection" bc they r not just decor nor just something i take care of, they serve a lot of purposes in my life and i have to balance what they can give me with my energy levels and capabilities. like you said!
    also it's so messed up that landlords control people's lives like this we live in one of the bad timelines i guess.

    You are so spot on with “stop propagating”
    Im always sticking parts that break of off my plants (or all parts of chopped leggy plants) into moss or a soil mix…. And then theres several of which some need to be rehomed, such a hassle 😅
    Thanks for adding the precautions to the use of systemics 😊
    I think most of them are currently banned here, for personal use anyway (to save the pollinators)

    I agree about using chemicals on pests. My plants at home are not in an open ecosystem to poison insects such as bees. It's just me, the plants, dust and trips - the former I get rid of by wiping the plants with a solution of soap and neem oil to nourish the leaves immediately, the latter I get rid of with a pest spray without regretting anything. Or I get rid of the plant if it is too damaged, I prefer not to risk it.

    I have a maximum of 10 plants more than that is difficult to manage, this is too complicate with light If I have more than this. My plants are not cactus or succulent they need more care I mainly have calathea 😅 more easy care plant I probably can manage more. If I life in a bigger home with lot of windows I probably can go at 20 max, but people with big collection I am impress by that, and in my head I am OMG how he can manage this 😆 my ADHD brain and too many activities in my life for this!
    Many peoples stop plant hobby for this reason after the COVID boom, this people during the boom say me you have only 10 plants, I have 40-50-100 plants. This type of personne where a bit pretentious in thinking I am better… now I stil have between 5-10 plants and them for the most part 0-2. Plants was not a new hobby for me but a long time love. My lazy way of dealing with pests is sticky traps and carnivous plants. I have window fly traps, flea light traps, and roach tunnel traps. I have drosera and nepenthes, beautiful plants which are busy devouring fungus gnats, nothing else around. They need distilled water which I've started giving the rest of my plants too. The tap water comes from a muddy river. It's drinkable. All my problem plants are on probation until next summer when the ax falls.

I root, and pot many pieces in planters I don't use anymore, then give them away. But you got me there with the philodendrons. I promise I just want one more type! are you dealing with perfectionism or genuinely struggling to grow? bc it sounds like you might be dealing with some perfectionism that might be making you harder on yourself than you should be. you shouldn't ever strive for perfection with plants bc it will prevent you from enjoying anything and literally stunt your plants- in Integrated Pest Management, one often hears about how we should never try to completely eradicate all pests bc a very small amount of pest pressure actually keeps plants producing the most growth. It sounds counterintuitive but it's true. so your plants will grow best if you let them experience a teeny tiny bit of pest issues. it helps me to try to copy nature herself in some ways, like Ebuka is so right abt underplanting; nature is exuberant and effusive with life, why shouldn't i be?

    • @marco.a13
      @marco.a13 3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for your insight. You're right, I'm being hard on myself and I know it stems from other areas in my life. Some time ago gardening was really a therapy, a moment of introspection as well as contemplation. But then it became this demanding thing. I know I give more significance to what's going wrong than to the many beautiful surprises that the plants provide me - and that's unfair to them also. Any way, I don't wanna go on on this but this feeling has a lot to do with mental health issues and I hope I can get back to feeling the sensation I had before with this hobby.

    I find nothing wrong in embracing a plant that loves your home conditions. I have a wall of windows that is my Snake plant collecton where I only have interesting harder to find Sanseveria's cause I love their structure so I smbrace it as a low maintenace sun loving kingdom. Last week I got 2 baby Aglaonema snow white's because they work so well for me and they love my living room sun and I only want plants that thrive and are happy with me. I like to walk into a room and see my fat little Ag's babies dreaming of growing up to Nigeria's standards. I dunno who calls them basic with all their color combo's but show me anyone who doesn't see their pops of color and doesn't smile. I avoid plants that I watch other youtube people cry over constantly battling pests. I'm sorry but some exotic tropicals need to stay in thier jungle settings free of the pests that vaca in the U.S. like flying sharks. I keep my plant number under 50 cause this works for me and I like focal points in rooms. Bonide and Captain Jack dead bug brew are my two fav. brands.Keep humor and joy in your plants and dont bring home anything you dont know anything about it other then being a trend. I'm the chic who waits 2 years on a plant til it shows up in a big box store. I dont spend hundreds on a cutting or do masive prop jars. Plants should be like music to you when you walk into a room and not a Steven King novel waiting to scare you on a shelf lol.
