Lol, me baking soil has become somewhat of a meme for my boyfriend and another friend who came to visit when I tried that for the first time 😂 I had quite a few trays and the kitchen smelled accordingly and the whole process looked very strange and he was just like 🤨😂 Now I only do it when he isn’t home 😅 Having the window wide open and door closed really helps with the smell but I guess only if the room isn’t too large. I hadn’t covered it with tin foil and also hadn’t sprayed it so it came out bone dry. Getting it back to absorb water worked but I think that the people who said that it would kill off the good microorganisms too were right. Now the absorption of organic fertiliser doesn’t work well anymore because there is nobody there to process it. I think that the neem oil I used had the same effect as I didn’t use any compost to revive it later. The pests were gone. Neem oil is great for that. I feel like my pilea has turned unhappy after a few months which would make sense if she can’t use the fertiliser I’m giving her. But I had a few problems lately and I’m so sick of repotting rn 😭 The last time I used the sterilised soil for a new mix (doing it for the first time) I mixed a bit of very nutrient-rich tomato soil into it that should be alive. I’m actually not 100% sure about that either because it was on my balcony at 0 degrees celsius (32 fahrenheit). My pothos moved into the mix after having lived in water for a while so we’ll see how that goes.
That’s actually a good idea to perhaps always combine the sterilized soil with some new soil as well. I’m working on a video about nutrient lockout (which is what you’re describing) but it’s proving a tad bit more time consuming on the research stage than I anticipated
The little bugs in the soil are springtails! People pay good money for them for their reptile vivariums. I have them all through my plants in leca. Hope that helps!
Ok so I thought maybe that’s what they were but also was concerned that they were baby silverfish (big problem in my area) which I know the two are related but silverfish are way more no bueno. The fact they seemed to be jumping made me feel like they weren’t silverfish though but I still kept second guessing myself…
@@wishingonthemoon1 No they aren’t harmful to plants but they damage other things in your house and are hard to get rid off once an infestation happens.
Great video - cool inspiration tips 🙂 My experience: I have been sterilizing pon/lecca/other anorganic things this way: a) if the plant in it was healthy and had no issues, I flash through boiling water (I keep pouring round and round nearly 1 min); b) if there was an issue (root rot/fungus/pests), I boil it for 5-10 min. (it must be boiling - bubbling the whole time and the temperature shouldn´t drop below boil level). This works perfect for me, kills pests and fungus, and I had never any problems. H2O2: I don´t like it because I don´t find it reliable to kill all pests 100 % - only boiling water does that for me (the water must stay there a minute and everything is dead and floating on the top). Since I attempted H2O2 to kill spidermites and failed, I keep using only boiling water with reliable success.
Super helpful! And thank you for clarifying the solarization for gardening vs houseplant/indoor use. I’ll use the hydrogen peroxide now, but will hopefully try solarization when the KY summer hits🌻
Good video! Thank you! Theo is stealing your applause. LOL He is so stinking cute! Looks like you've got your hands full with him. As for the little crawling bugs, they look like fungus gnats. I'm currently battling them thanks to a bag of infested potting soil I bought several months ago. 🙄
Love this...thank you for the information. I was throwing regular soil away but sterilizing pon and leca, but I will use this to sterilize my soil...the hydrogen peroxide method.
I’ve never considered reusing soil. I might give it a go with your hydrogen peroxide method as it sounds easy enough. Thanks for your informative video and the time you put in researching these methods.
I don't know what those little things are either, but I found them in a couple of empty terracotta pots that I had outside. They were next to my front door but before that, they were out back just in the open. I killed every one of them before I reused the pot and cleaned it! I hate bugs.

I’ve been wondering about hydrogen peroxide lately so I’m glad you mention it. I got some a few days ago to treat root rot and was wondering if I could water my soil with it when I suspect something might not be right. Some articles I read said yes. It kills off the germs but what about the “good” microorganisms? Yesterday I found what I suspect to be a few springtails at the bottom of a pot and I flooded them out I think but just for prophylactic reasons I’d like to pour some H2O2 but will it leave the good stuff alive? How concentrated is the one you use? Where I live we can only get 3% and not even in regular stores.
You can water with it but you just don’t want to be doing crazy often. 3% peroxide is fine and do a solution that is two parts water and one part peroxide.
If you live in a zone with winters, taking things outside when it’s very very cold (The colder the better, I think at least

I just put soil in the microwave for 5 minutes it works great and springtails are great for your plants because they only eat the rot
