    If you have the trim plugin at 0db and its clipping, that means its already clipping going into that plugin and your gain staging needs to be looked at.

      @RobArnoldWorld Do you do you give your drum tracks their own channel if you are using a drum plug-in? or do you just run it through one channel? It looks like you only have one channel. I had mine split, but after watching this, I tried doing it on one channel and EQ'd it. It seemed to work out better.

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  4 місяці тому

      I have two methods, depending on the material. For songs I make for youtube vids, or demos, I just run my programmed drums on one stereo track.
      But for album level songs, I separate the drums out onto individual tracks, but I sum certain instruments. For example I'll have Kicks on their own track, snare on it's own track, toms all on one track, overheads and cymbals on one track, and then room mics on another track. So that's five stem groups. And this allows me to process those instrument stems individually. Like lets say I want to reduce the low end build up of fast double bass parts... I need the kicks on their own track to be able to do so, to avoid reducing the low end of the overall drum sound.
      I hope that all makes sense!@@theredbeardmetalshow242

    Hello Rob. Chimaira has impacted my teenage/young adult years for sure. It belongs to those 4 ou 5 "core bands" that you´ll listen your whole life. Those bands that when you don´t have nothing to hear or don´t what to hear, you just fall into them. Here, i´m always gravitating to Six Feet Under, Pantera, Korn, Chimaira and Marilyn Manson and 3 ou 4 more, but those are the baseline. You´ve certainly made a mark in the Metal genre. :) Now, talking about your channel, it has been a god gift. Although I´ve been playing for some years now, I´m discovering so much more with this channel. Please continue and Thank You!

    What do you think of the L2 vs the L1?

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks man! I never got into the L2 (which I do have), only because the L1 has served me well ever since I started using it. And you know the old saying... If it ain't broke!

    Some notes from a DSP developer:
    - In the digital realm, samples are nothing but numbers. Volume adjustments are nothing but multiplying those numbers by factors. Want something to be twice as loud? Multiply the sample value with factor 2. Should it be half as loud? Multiply with factor 0.5 instead. If you want to bring the volume of something down, all you need is this multiplication. Anything that does more than multiply the sample values with factors is, as you put it, "magic pill" stuff. So... I'm confused why you would think you need your computer to load the entire VMR with all of its processors but then you only use one that SHOULD merely multiply numbers, but MAYBE also does more than that in the background. Your host's own Trim plugin (yes, even the one in Pro Tools) will be the superior choice, wasting fewer resources, doing nothing more than you tell it to do - lower the volume.
    - Most tape plugins will just use a mix of EQ, compression and saturation. Some will EQ the signal before processing, and then EQ the signal after processing to "undo" the first EQ's changes. Some will constantly re-sample the signal to create inconsistency and warbling. Apart from that, there's a reason why tape plugins tend to be the most visually appealing. They do very little that's special. Just a fancy GUI for some super-gentle compression, nicerizing EQ and parallel saturation mixed in at low levels. Effectively the "magic pill" thing you say you don't like.
    - I once took the time to compare a bunch of then-hyped SSL Bus Compressor plugins to an actual hardware SSL Bus Compressor. Waves, The Glue, Analog Obsession, SSL's own, UAD, and I believe 1 or 2 others that I've forgotten. I pushed them all to around 4 dB of gain reduction, so not particularly extreme. Waves sounded like a HiFi "loud" button (bathtub EQ), Glue sounded NOTHING like the SSL (more like a generic maximizer), A.O. Buster faded into total silence the more you turned one of the knobs up (which is gravely incorrect behaviour), only the actual SSL plugin and the UAD sounded somewhat related to the hardware unit. Ah, I also tested the IK T-Racks Bus Comp, which back then was simply laughable, and the NI (or rather: made by someone for NI) Solid Mix Bus Comp, which I think fared pretty well overall. So why you would pick one of the worst and "furthest from the truth" plugins for the job somewhat confuses me.
    - Here's a fun thing: inter-sample peaks. Since a digital audio signal is not continuous but discrete, it's totally possible that between two discrete samples could be a continuous value exceeding the two discrete samples. Think of a piece of paper with two dots on it. Those are two sample values. Think of a straight line directly connecting those two dots. This is to show that at any point in time between the two dots, the digital/discrete value stays the same. Now draw a curve, a bow that connects the two dots but not in a straight line. This could be a continuous signal (think: microphone or loudspeaker membrane movement) that goes through the two digitally sampled values (i.e. the dots), but goes way past the straight line in the real world. So the digital world only knows the two dots that could be under 0.0 dBfs, thus not clipping digitally, but the actual continuous curve that connects them could very well exceed 0.0 dBfs and create clipping in the real world.
    - Waves L1 is, at its heart, just a broad/single band look-ahead limiter. Its internal DSP is so many decades old, that it doesn't even know how to oversample. Oversampling is however required for signal reconstruction that allows "true peak" detection, and to get rid of those inter-sample peaks that could become actual clipping in the real world, i.e. when playing back your track over speakers. Waves L1 is an interesting tool for individual track "maximizing", but do yourself the favour and BAN it from your master track. Like so many of Waves' products, it has not caught up with the current millennium, it's still in the 90s internally, a time when analog tape and VHS were still valid media.
    - Waves Linear Phase Multiband has 5 bands. The pink slider is for the High band, not the Master. The buttons to the right of the pink High band slider are the "master" buttons. If you click on and drag the "master" buttons, all the 5 coloured band sliders will change by the same amount. Tongue in cheek, it made me chuckle that you talk about having to know your tools and having to know what you're doing, but then you don't understand the pink slider/"master" situation... ;)
    - Any company that still uses racist labelling like "master" and "slave" should generally be avoided. There was enough time to adapt to this progress in our society, and to think of new terms. Most companies have long caught up with the millennium, just not Waves. If a company like Waves hasn't managed to catch up with the times, I think one should VERY deeply consider whether it's worth further supporting them, especially as a "public figure".
    - Waves are, in general, the worst company to advertise for. They throw out their product for next to nothing, I believe the recently had a sub-$10 sale, and then they cash in when they release a new version. It has become more affordable to just wait throughout the year and buy the plugins you use NEW AGAIN in the new version when they go on sale, than it is to actually pay for Waves Update Plan and upgrade the licences you already own. This is effectively throw-away product marketing. Waves have now adopted a roughly annual upgrade cycle, with a new major version released about every year or so. I had upgraded some outdated random licenses to a Waves bundle just two months before Apple released their first Silicon M1 machines. I know from my own work that "developer kit" Mac Minis with the new M1 processors had been available FOR FREE to any software developer (who requested one earlier) already 6+ months before the official M1 release. (I seem to remember M1s were released around November/December, and the "get your dev kit Mini now" mails went out in February or so, the actual computers arrived around April/May.) Ample time to adapt your toolchain, not that it needed significant programming work anyway, Apple's dev tools did/do most of the heavy work. And yet, in the 10 remaining months I had of owning a valid Waves bundle license, I could not use it on my new M1 Mac. But guess what came with the official new major version release, just a few days after my "1 year of included WUP" had run out. M1 support for all Waves plugins. In the time I owned my Waves bundle, they released 2 bugfix updates, nothing more. In other words: they COULD have rolled out M1 updates for everyone earlier, but they intentionally delayed M1 support, and made people pay the insane WUP prices to upgrade to the newer version. Intentionally holding back compatibility updates and hiding them behind a paywall. In addition to the low-end boomer code (don't ask for oversampling) in the same 90s DSP modules they re-use in all their products over and over again. In addition to the many incompatibilities and bugs, or the restrictive licencing and all the problems that come with that. In addition not only devaluating their own products as throw-away licenses, but also devaluing the plugin market by offering SEEMINGLY cheap products with hidden follow-up costs, tilting the pricing of every other developer who asks more than $29 for their produts towards insanity, even with lifetime free updates and bugfixes, even with vastly superior DSP. This is not competitive pricing, this is misleading advertising, the lowest form of short-term user base inflation. Waves are everything that is wrong with humanity put into one company. I repeat: Waves are, in general, the worst company to advertise for. And it's not a secret. Are they paying you to promote their trash? If so, you need to say so in your video.
    - Considering the previous paragraph, Fabfilter Pro-MB, Melda MDynamicsMB, Sonible SmartComp, Softube Drawmer/Weiss, or even any dynamic EQ, will do the same job, and probably better than the Waves plugin (sound as well as performance), likely at a lower price, and VERY likely without any of the potential follow-up Waves premium. Most DAWs these days come with a built-in multi-band compressor that will be better than ye ole Waves multi-band DSP from the 90s, so don't be ashamed to use one if your DAW has one.
