    I thought I was the only one dealing with some singers that want their vocal more in the mix than a bit above the mix, which is where I usually hear it. I´m currently mixing and mastering an album for Blues guy, and he really wants his vocals deep in the mix with the other instruments. Glad I´m not the only one dealing with this. Nice tutorial.

    Old school digital mastering is cool sometimes, but we have so many incredible tools available I feel this video is doing digital mastering a bit of a disservice... It can be so much more fun that eq and comp.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 місяців тому +3

      That's a huge question! It depends on whether you are purely mastering the track or fixing mixing issues as to how plug ins are being used. If I find myself using a ton of multi band, dynamic EQ and or widening plug ins during mastering then I would definitely go back to the mix and solve those issues in it. Warren Sokol has done videos with us on using this techniques to fix issues in a mix.

    • @nickmessitte1721
      @nickmessitte1721 4 місяці тому +1

      To be fair though, a lot of what Warren says is lacking in gainstaging digitally has come a long way since these psp plug-ins. Michelangelo, for instance, really captures what it’s like to drive a tube circuit. The new Softube stuff too, as well as gold clip and a few color eqs out there. I feel that with some of those tools-and perhaps less of a low end boost-he could’ve gotten the level he said he wanted without the mix collapsing.

    Great Video, thank you so much ! For the vocal boost, Ozone 11 would come in handy, as it can separate and process the stems from a mix in real time (including vocals), super cool for such situations.

    Wow! Unliking L/R in the limiter... That's revealing to me! I hear it very clearly here, in my trusted speakers. No need to put on headphones. Not that subtle, even though it is. When it's fully linked, it sounds rather stiff but when @40 then there's that kinda seasickness sort of effect... I guess lower we'd start too feel kinda nauseous... 60'S good, you're right. Well... Thanks a lot for that demonstration! And have a marvelous new year, as someone would say... ;-)

  • @Ytsssss364

    i follow a lot of EDM tutorials - like on sonic academy - and their quick and dirty "mastering" method is on the master buss right there in the mix, as a final step, using maximizers/limiters and leaving some luffs etc - but doing it right "in the mix" if you will - what's to say about this versus say bouncing out a "final" with say 12 db headroom etc - and then dumping in to ozone "as a whole"? or like for instance, dropping "ozone plugin" right into the mix - and then basically "mastering" as you "bounce out your track" ? know what i mean?

    • @NoQualmsTheArtist
      @NoQualmsTheArtist 5 місяців тому +3

      Mastering is a completely different way for listening to the music. Changing the mindset of how to listen to the music is easier done as a completely different session without access to the tracks.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 місяців тому +3

      Indeed, I would definitely split the process up into mixing and mastering

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 місяців тому +1

      As already mentioned here, using the master bus for sidechaining functions etc in EDM is very common and when you're using synthetic or virtual sound you aren't as concerned as much about preserving sonic characteristics or integrity of the original source, ie it's not a harp recorded in a beautiful room or solo violin with the mic pulled back! The point is often in EDM the Master Bus pumping in time with a 4 on the floor kick is a huge part of the sound of the final mix

    I have a question I was hoping you or anyone in the community could please help me with. I decided to get the Neve 5057 after watching your video and doing tons of research, great video BTW! I mix primarily in the box aside from a SSL GBUS I built and an Orban 622 EQ that I modded a bit. I have a MOTU Ultralite MK5 and I have all the I/O used up except for the ADAT output. Is there a device that could take ADAT in and break out to 8 Line outs? I'd been looking for something but most solutions are discontinued. I found the dangerous audio convert 8 would work but it's far too expensive for my remaining budget. It's the only way I could get 8 more outputs for the 5057.

    • @cabslandpenny7787
      @cabslandpenny7787 5 місяців тому +2

      I'm sure a RME Octamic can do that. Probably you have to route the adats out of the outputs in TotalMix, the software RME is using!

    • @MarcBecker_Music
      @MarcBecker_Music 5 місяців тому +4

      There are a couple of devices under $1000 that provide 8 ADAT I/Os. The Black Lion Audio Revolution EXP, the Ferrofish Pulse 16, the Focusrite Clarett+ OctoPre, and the EVO SP8, which is an inexpensive but great-sounding solution.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 місяців тому +4

      That would effectively change the whole balance. His solution maintains the intention of the mixer but improves the result, exactly what a good mastering engineer should do. Plus as much as I like Rebalance it will effect the sound of the master, it’s a great tool though

      The only way to know, is to have sat in the room while he mastered this, meaning using your ears and hearing what the differences are, even though each change he makes is according to his ears, his room acoustics, monitor positioning/monitors, choice of analog gear. Does this translate using UA-cam codec audio compression? Sometimes, this is why using plugins at extreme adjustments helps to hear what is happening prior to small adjustments. Plugin stack off/on can be translated on youtube videos, but you really got to be in the room at the time for the best critical judgement.
