Hey man I just discovered your channel. Man I have to say what killer content. For Metal guys you hit the topics we love to hear. Great work my friend. Take care
Chimaira was definitely a huge influence on why I chose 5150s as my go to tone. I still exclusively only use 5150. Ive had an OG block, a 5150 II and now I have a 3 Stealth. Best metal amp ever.
The self-titled album was one of my most spun records as a teenager, and lead to me picking up the 5150 as my main amp ever since - hell, my first tube amp was a 6505+ 1x12 combo They Just Fuckin Work
I think many years ago you posted on myspace a picture of your 5150's control panel saying 'this is my sound'. You guys and Machine Head made me want a 5150 so bad back then. The guitars on impossibility were so crushing.
Siempre quise conocer la historia de los amplificadores de chimaira! Prácticamente me cambio la vida escuchar chimaira! No me queda más que agradecerles por todo lo que nos han brindado a los fanáticos!
Loved the tone of ‘impossibility’ so much so that when I played in a local band I ran a second hand 5150 with an EMG 81 equipped Jackson boosted with an overdrive pedal. I used to get metal heads coming up to me all the time after gigs complementing my tone. Still a huge fan of peavey amps thanks to you guys and machine head!
When I met you guys at the crowbar in State College Pa ,I had just got a yamaha DG1000, so stoked about the amps. I was talking about them to my friend telling them how stoked I was to see my amp on stage. I currently play a 6505+ so ive been along that tone journey with you guys being my biggest inspiration since day 1
I recorded with Schigel back in 2010 and we used my JSX paired with his Uberschall and it sounded monsterous. I wound up going to the Guitar Center there in olmsted falls? on the way OUT of town and found the matching 4x12 for my JSX for like $300 (normally $700). Needless to say I had to make room for another 4x12 on the trip home. Still have the rig today, but I switched to using a kemper in 2012.
I started with a cheap harmony amp that my parents got me, but a buddy loaned me that same Peavey Rage 108. It sounded really good for the time to play some Master of Puppets tunes. Unfortunately, someone stole it while it was in my possession. Luckily, my buddy didn't really care because he had stopped playing. My first gig worthy amp was an Ibanez 100 watt combo with an aftermarket EV 12 loaded plugged into a Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 cab with V30s.
I think this is the first full video I see of you just talking and you have a very easygoing vibe in your voice. I kinda like it! Will make sure to follow more!
Those SLM era Crate and Ampeg all have dirty loop jack issues. Usually you can put a jumper in the fx loop and they will pass signal again. If yours works again after trying that then its an easy fix with some Deoxit and working a plug in and out a few times
Because of you and your video of yourself playing the 6505+ I went out and bought a 6505 brand new shortly afterwards. I was going back and forth in my mind on which amp I wanted but that video convinced me and I absolutely love it because it crushes
Great Vid Rob! Lifelong guitar gear hounds/metalheads LIVE for this stuff! I'm Peavey/ Mesa all the way since 1989...gotta admit, the JSX (w/4x12 Marshall Mesa 2x12 Recto EXT) can crush a club covering DOWN and Danzig!! love the history keep it coming Man.
I've used a crate stealth . Which is very marshally , then went to the peavey ultra ( youve gotta try that one man ) , then went to the 6505+ .. but now I'm a 5150iii guy . The cleans just ring so nice on them . Thanks for the trip down memory lane brother
Great vid man! Thanks for sharing! Fellow guitar players always enjoy hearing about each others gear journey and what worked and didn't work for them. Still waiting for that big Jim catch up video. Gotta give your old bass player some love!
Cool interview I'm getting me a peavey infected it can cover the 6505 has a built-in Noise Gate built-in boost I'm sure you know about it it's a kicking Kick-Ass amplifier
Hey Rob! Me again. Amazing man! I love the first 3 records a lot by y'all. So you basically had a lot of Trial and Error in terms of amps. You went from the Yamaha on POOE, The Peavy 5150 on IOR, and the 6505 on the self titled. Did you use the Marshall VS100 on "This Present Darkness''? if so, that's amazing man! (haha I said that twice!) Not gonna lie, I thought you guys used Hughes and Kettner on Pass Out Of Existence, there's something about that Murky tone you guys had on that record that I love. This is how I can best sum up in my ears as a metal guitarist. Pass Out Of Existence - Tone: Dark and Murky impossibility Of Reason - Tone: Rough and Rugged like Overkill (Best Thrash Band IMHO) Chimaira (Self Titled) - Tone: Perfected and Sharpened
I actually bought an engl Powerball last year because I thought you used it regularly lol. It's a beast though, I love it, I'm surprised you never gave it more love, and the foot switch is very durable haha.
I was just jamming Heart of it All and replayed the main solo more times then I care to admit. Is that the 6505 as well? I'm a KSR artist and love the hotrodded dual rec tones but the peavey grind still has a place in my heart as well.
Cool - i used a Powerball for 15 years in my old band. Ended up selling it when i got a Mesa Mark IV a few years back. I think it beats the 6505 in cleans though. The gain channel is up to personal taste.
Awesome video rob was really happy about it by chance in a future video do you think you could do a pedal version of this video I would be curious if you used anything besides a tuner, tube screamer and a noise gate
@@RobArnoldWorld get onto it my man! The boss katana 100 is amazing! Its not costly and you can use up to 3 effects at once with no pedals! I use a boss fs6 switcher pedal to switch between 4 presets saved in the boss studio program, which is another cool thing. You can store up to 50 effects into the amp and use them at any time! Not mention the tone you can pull from it is immense.. you should get a hold of one and really noodle about with it for a while buddy
Now that you've talked about the history of your amps, what about the future? Are there any new cool amps that you want to try or something you already like that you may buy one day? I bought myself an SLO-100 FS for my 40th birthday earlier this year and haven't plugged my 6505+ in since. Long time Chimaira fan here and love watching your channel. Keep up the good work.
Nice! Not familiar with that amp, but it looks rad! So you're saying it out does the 6505 for ya? My amplifier future? Currently I'm interested in checking out the Friedman stuff, but probably won't unless I happen upon one. And I've always been interested in the Helix stuff. Haven't tried any of it though yet. It just looks cool and I've heard good things. The Peavey Invective also looks rad. Right now though, I'm just digging the plugin world. If and when I start playing live again, is when I'll nerd out on some new stuff and check out some new amps. Hope that happens sooner than later!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld the 5150 and the Rectifier preamp are both clones or copies of the original Soldano SLO-100 which is what drew me to it. There's an awesome Neural DSP SLO-100 plugin that's a pretty accurate representation of the real thing since you're into plugins. The invective is essentially a modern 6505+ with a built in gate, modern features like DI out for cab sims, and midi I believe. The Freidman stuff is awesome and they're made by B.A.D. which also makes the Soldanos. I've not really gotten into the modelers yet but the Quad Cortex has me intrigued, I'm just waiting on Neural DSP to work out a few more firmware features like the plugin integration before I pull the trigger.
My friends band definitely used 6505's because of you! I see your comment below on why you didn't go with rectifiers but I would love to see you review the new badlander if you could ever get your hands on one
Cool vid. Interesting to see your amps. I started on crate went to that exact marshall then started using jcm 2000 DSL marshall for a lot of years. Had some peavy amps but i bought a black star id. 260 and its the best amp i think I've owned so far. Killer tone and volume. Was surprised by it to say the least.
I almost got a Peavey Combo amp, but instead I got a Marshall Combo. My reason for that was the Marshall had a split channel and it just sounded better. Plus it was a lot cheaper. Great video Rob. Will you be do doing another video over the weekend ?
Nice- nothing wrong with a good Marshall combo! I'll definitely be working on the next video over the weekend, but it probably won't arrive until early next week. I'm now trying to average two videos a week, with no real set schedule in terms of specific days they'll be released. The every Sunday thing has been going well for months now, but I'm switching things up to try something new!
@@RobArnoldWorld I like that Idea Rob. Yes the Sunday thing as been going very well from what I've seen and read in the comments. plus a change is always a good thing. As always many thanks for your reply Rob. Have a nice weekend and take care of yourself.
Only if they fell into my lap! I have had my eye on the Friedman BE-Mini though. But lately I've just been content with software plugins to get the tone I'm looking for.
@@RobArnoldWorld I have the Friedman be 100 and it is really cool! But I’m not sure if it would get you the modern tone that you typically use.. but it would be interesting to see how you dial it in.
I did use a 5150 III with SFU every night on the Summer Slaughter tour 2011, and I loved it! I wish I owned one! But that's the only time I've messed with one and I don't recall the particular model/edition, or whether or not it was a stealth, etc.
Ya i have a 6505+ and a mini 5150 stealth. Its a little different than the 6505, and I love both. I use an mxr 6 band in the loop which is kind of like a cheat code. U can achieve any metal tone with eq, as u know
Thanks! Just some delay and verb on my solos. Live I've used the Digitech GSP 1101 for all of my effects for years. And in the studio, I'll just use delay and verb plugins. 🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld we need chimaria back!! "I still jam the Black album out"! Nothing remains!!! Kevin Tally is a beast on them drums on that album!! Pure sickness!!🤟🤟🤟🤟🔥🔥🔥🔥😈

Good stuff here. Thank you. Question - Other than your Boss tuner and the ISP noise reduction, it does not appear that you ever used any sort of OD or boost pedal to hit the amp harder? So many guys (especially Mesa recto players because the low end is so flubby on those) hit the front with an 808 or TS-9 or an SD-1, etc. You always used the pure 6505+ preamp sound and never goosed it with an extra pedals as far as I can see? I guess the EMG 81 was enough of a push - you cannot question the end result!
Yessir! I've never used boosts or overdrives. Never found them necessary, and the couple of times I tried one out, I just didn't find any benefits. If you want to hear more, check out this video for the whole story! 👉 ua-cam.com/video/uFP-NxjirT0/v-deo.html
Surprised you guys never tried Mesa rectifier’s on the road! Rob have you tried the peavey invective ??? Or a Randall Satan ?? As always, love your stuff man! Keep being you brother
Remember that story I was telling about buying gear at Guitar Center? Well while we were there, we tried out some triple rec's, and we thought they sounded great for open chord type stuff, but didn't have the bite we were looking for when it came to chugging and syncopation type riffs. Would I rock one today? Sure! But that's the reason we never got into the mesa heads. Never tried the Invective, but it looks awesome! Never tried the Satan either... I'm hoping to end up in heaven one day! haha cheers bro!
What are your thoughts on pedal boosting 6505+? As I know you've mostly used that for the chimaira albums. Is there a reason you would or wouldn't boost an amp for song writing?
Do you think the 6505+ sounds different from the older 5150? I always felt my 5150 didn’t sound as badass ass your sound and that’s the tone I always wanted. Even tho I’m using a similar cab with v30s.
Honestly even though I believe they're supposed to sound the same, I'd take my 6505 over the 5150. I prefer the sound of it although I can't say exactly why. I also like the additional channel on the 6505 for more flexibility.
@@RobArnoldWorld do you hear that the 6505+ low end is still ballsy but a little tighter and it’s gain little more aggressive sounding? I’m just wondering if your hearing kinda the same. Since I don’t own a 6505+ you would have more experience hearing it. Plus your one of my guitar heroes that I grew up loving and idolize. Six is one of my favorite songs ever. So just trying to pick your brain a little. Also do you remember playing in Lafayette Louisiana? I was there and I wish I knew how much of an impact y’all would have on me because I was knew to y’all and that night set y’all as my all time favorite band hands down. It’s surreal that I’m actually talking to you.
@@whatsupbra43 Hey awesome man! Proud to hear that!👊 As far as the 6505, I haven't really tuned into those specifics you mentioned. I think there are too many factors when trying to describe it so specifically. Guitar, cabinet, pickups, etc... all of those things obviously have an effect on the over all tone. At the end of the day, the 6505 just rocks, and sounds great no matter what you send through it!
Makes me miss my set up... Hughes and kettner warp x with a krank revolution 4x12. I ran the 6505+ after but ended up selling for more room. Now I run Rob's tonecrate plug in. I couldn't recommend it enough!
Dude I always thought the same about engl. Just a way more expensive 6505+. I have never heard one that really blew my socks off. I think a lot of people judge gear by how much it lightens their wallet, rather than how it sounds.
It was cool to see the Marshall Valvestate vs100 head. I have a Valvestate vs232 2×12 combo that I bought from a pawn shop years ago. Who's the troll that gave this video a thumbs down?
@@RobArnoldWorld Far more than it makes any sense for them to be. The last one I saw was a 15 watter, and it was going for $400 or so. The last 1x12 I saw was north of a grand.

Do guitars next!!! Also, I’d love to know about the effects used, and the bass rigs!
My friends band definitely used 6505's because of you! I see your comment below on why you didn't go with rectifiers but I would love to see you review the new badlander if you could ever get your hands on one
Nice! And if a Bandlander falls into my lap, I'll get all over it!🤘
Cool!
Hell yeah!
You should try the EVH amp
I played one every night on the Summer Slaughter tour back 2011 with Six Feet Under, and I loved it!
I never saw those Yamaha amps, but that had to be ahead of it's time
Exactly! They were bro
Rob. Have you used a Peavy Ultra???
Never heard of it!
Now that peavey is not really what it used to be, are you interested in trying out other amps? If so, which ones?
Only if they fell into my lap! I have had my eye on the Friedman BE-Mini though. But lately I've just been content with software plugins to get the tone I'm looking for.
@@RobArnoldWorld I have the Friedman be 100 and it is really cool! But I’m not sure if it would get you the modern tone that you typically use.. but it would be interesting to see how you dial it in.
Hey rob have u tried the 5150 iii 6l6 stealth? Thoughts on it?
I did use a 5150 III with SFU every night on the Summer Slaughter tour 2011, and I loved it! I wish I owned one! But that's the only time I've messed with one and I don't recall the particular model/edition, or whether or not it was a stealth, etc.
Ya i have a 6505+ and a mini 5150 stealth. Its a little different than the 6505, and I love both. I use an mxr 6 band in the loop which is kind of like a cheat code. U can achieve any metal tone with eq, as u know
Awesome stuff! Any pedals you use for soloing?
Thanks! Just some delay and verb on my solos. Live I've used the Digitech GSP 1101 for all of my effects for years. And in the studio, I'll just use delay and verb plugins. 🎸
I kinda want the new evh 5150 combo now. Sit it next to my orange bass terror combo. Match made in metal heaven.
Nice man! you've got to bring that crate back to life and do a demo 🤘🤘🤘
I hope to!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld we need chimaria back!! "I still jam the Black album out"! Nothing remains!!! Kevin Tally is a beast on them drums on that album!! Pure sickness!!🤟🤟🤟🤟🔥🔥🔥🔥😈

Great man🤘 so for the selftitled Album 2005 you use a Engl with mesa cab? or the peavy with the mesa cab? Greez
S/T album was 2 tracks of 5150 II thru a Mesa, and 2 tracks of Bogner Uberschall thru a Bogner cab!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld ahhh ok thnx Rob, that guitartone is unique in my opinion 🤘
Peavey 5150, meat and potato's. It's THE metal amp, and also the reason I have one :D
Agreed!
Sweet
I've never used boost or overdrive pedals. Never found them necessary!
@@RobArnoldWorld Interesting, thanks!
Proud to hear that!👊
As far as the 6505, I haven't really tuned into those specifics you mentioned.
Awesome man! Glad to hear you're using the ToneCrate stuff!👊
Dude I always thought the same about engl. Just a way more expensive 6505+. I have never heard one that really blew my socks off. I think a lot of people judge gear by how much it lightens their wallet, rather than how it sounds.
You might be right!
It was cool to see the Marshall Valvestate vs100 head. I have a Valvestate vs232 2×12 combo that I bought from a pawn shop years ago. Who's the troll that gave this video a thumbs down?
Nice! And yep, there's always one troll who thumbs down everything. I wonder if it's the same dork doing it every time! 🤘🤣
Hell yeah 🤘
sup rob love ya mate \m/
I really wish I bought a Peavey Rage back in the day... The prices they're asking for them now are utterly ridiculous.
Really? What are they going for?
@@RobArnoldWorld Far more than it makes any sense for them to be. The last one I saw was a 15 watter, and it was going for $400 or so. The last 1x12 I saw was north of a grand.
@@MFKR696 Wow, maybe they're considered a relic now or something?
@@RobArnoldWorld Nope. It's supply/demand. They're that expensive because that's what people will pay for them (faux nostalgia). It's sad, really.
@@MFKR696 Crazy!
💗🤘
It’s interesting, how you guys, having this mainstream nu-metal sound , never used dual rectifires.
Really? How come?
