  • Doug and Pat take a little break from PAF pickup comparisons and bring you Part One of two parts: vintage Obscure Amps which they like a lot and have a bunch of. For an added treat we're giving you the "viewer suggested Non-Waxing On" version. Since they tend to ramble on sometimes they're going to let you, the viewers pull them back just a little, b
    ut just this once! Stay tuned for Part Two.

    This must be your first and last waxed on free zone video. I love the vintage gear and Doug's playing of the gear. I also love you're opinions and stories. I don't care if the video is 40 or 50 minutes long. You two have a wealth of knowledge and it needs to be shared with all of us. Still love what you guys do. I'm always thrilled to see your new videos. Can't wait for part 2.

      Part two is here but no edits. We were just joking around with what would be more annoying to our viewers that say we talk too much. That'll learn 'em!

    I own a very similar Danelectro amp, but mine came stock from the factory with a 15" speaker! 6L6GC's are the factory-specified tube, but the voltages are fairly low and you can run it safely with 6V6GT'S for a little more snarl and breakup.

    The Premier sounds like Pat said, cheap; trebly and ratty distortion. The Dano sounds really good! I had a similar Teisco in the head version, not bad after it was recapped, etc.

    The Premier is clearly broken. The fizzy sound, the lack of sustain and the weird, unnatural envelope. I'm guessing one of the coupling caps between the stages is shot and causes the operating point of the following stage to be totally out of whack. Sounds like one of those DIY single transistor fuzz pedals.
    The Danelectro on the other hand sounds absolutely amazing.

      kardRatzinger Yup the Premier is clearly broken, especially noticeable on the bridge pickup.

    • @leonc1234
      @leonc1234 5 років тому

      Yup. That is the sound of bad filter caps, IME (and possibly speaker too)...That thing will probably sound A LOT better if you have someone go through. And it'll be worth it too!

    Doug's such a good player, you don't know if the amp sounds good or if it Doug's amazing fingers that makes it sound good.

    I mean most ppeople don't realise that the Rickenbacker frying pan guitar came out in the 30s and the Charlie christian pickup cam out in about 36 and was put into a gibson ES-250 from 1939 onwards.. and there were plenty of amps already around that weren't specifically designed for guitar, but worked with them ready to go around then.
    And yes, if you find one of those old amps in an attic, or a garage sale (or doug or pat gives one to you) If it only has a 2 prong plug, I wouldn't even try it out. Get it to a tech and get it properly ground and sorted out because some of those old amps, if they have a malfunction inside, there is a possibility that pure AC will go through your guitar. Plus they can often make them sound better , get more headroom etc, by removing a resistor here, and adding one there etc..

    Funny things is that I own a Teisco Del Ray ET-220 guitar and it still works. It has its own distinctive sound. Just need a little work on the neck than its perfect. Peace, Flood!

    Be careful at 10:52 ... Daniel's son claims he came up with a way to drive push-pull circuits without an "input transformer" (a phase-inverting transformer). So the actual claim is the development of a tube-base phase inverter.

    Lose the needle scratch sound efx on the video edits please. Nice to hear some of
    the old skool amps. Premier sounds "ballsy" with the bare knuckles. The danelectro
    sounds nice with a jazzy tone from those alnico speakers. The Teisco sounds a lot
    like the old Gibson amps.

    Great video as always, guys, but ugh! I hate to say it, but that microphone used for miking the amps sounds terrible. I've heard some of the recordings in recent videos, and the sound in this video in particular doesn't sound very good. :( It just sounds wooly, distorted and choked out, and it has an odd scratchy/buzzy sound when notes are picked. It's just odd, and the tone of the amps just doesn't come through. I'd love to hear some room miked recordings instead. Oh, and I'd also have to agree, the needle scratching was a bit much after 3-4 times. Could do without. Beyond that, it was nice to see you bring some attention to some of these budget amps from the "golden era". Some of them were pretty good. Anyway, thanks for another good video. Cheers. :)

      We used the same AT 4040 that we've used on the last dozen or so shows including the first one. We think this microphone is pretty realistic and it just might be that after hearing the Vox AC10 SRT nothing sounds like that. Maybe. D&P

    • @Eywadude
      @Eywadude 7 років тому

      I've noticed it on the last few videos, including the AC10 SRT. It's a scratchiness/wooliness that was never there before. Cheers.
