  • It was a big month for D&P with a road trip to LA for the NAMM Show, vintage guitar show and a trip to Nerdville with Joe Bonamassa. Wait, we're not done..we also check out the Henry SRT+ clone of our vintage Vox AC10 SRT. How close is it? You might be surprised. Demos start at 12:43 and it goes out of sync at 50:30, sorry about that (thanks You Tube). Take note: D&P WILL BE ON VACATION UNTIL JULY, or at least Doug will. As always, NO ADS, WE HATE ADS! It's just us so let's get on with it.

    Wow! That Henry guy deserves a medal for recreating this amazing rig! Nails the sound of the original and those simple mods make it even better. Sounds a bit too clean without the Pat & Doug mod. Also I must say that Doug’s Heritage LP is sounding fantastic with those Amber spirit of 59 pups! Congrats on another great episode

      tonebender69 thanks so much, appreciate it!! I suggest the 12ax7 for straight-in playing, and the au7 for a better pedal platform. Even with the ax7, the “Clean” mode works great with OD & fuzz, too.

    Hey Doug & Pat, I watched your Nerdville Vid and was so impressed by the Henry SRT+, (and no I dont need another amp!) and look at what you guys have gone and done! You made me go and spend my hard earned money on a Henry SRT+ (with the Doug & Pat Mod) which arrived in Geelong Victoria Australia yesterday! Apparently I am the 1st Downunder Customer to get one. JB is great to deal with and he sold me a Shop Demo Amp Head which looks like it was stolen from a 1960's Gypsy Caravan due to the unusual groovy colors used to decorate the amp. Real Old School for sure! (is there a way to post a pic here?) Anyway I plugged her into 240V (apparently a simple mod by JB) and into my Marshall 100W Tweed Quad-Box with 4x25W Greenbacks) along with my 2014 Gibson LP R9 and turned it on. Not knowing what to expect, I hit the strings and BANG, this amp came to life with a dynamic wave of sound that nearly bowled me over that was pure joy!! It reacted to my playing , soft with the pick the sound was pure and clean and when I dug it in (not not you Doug) it snarled at me like a crocodile jumping out of the river and into my face!! Man, I have played a lot of amps, fenders, marshalls, yamahas, trainwrecks, vox's, etc but the Henry is in a Class of its own. I have been playing my Marshall 1987X Amp (modded by Dave Ulbrick) which is really nice but I really like the Henry sound more and It is pretty loyal as far as cloning the Vox AC10 SRT. Another satisfied customer...thanks Doug and Ted, now you owe me a lot of money, ok, just send me a XXL T-shirt..hahaha..no, really..

    Those have, stock, 1-12Ax7 for V1. The rest are suppose to be 12AU7’s for the preamp. Pat, If I recalls your’s has 12AX7’s for all the preamp valves. A 12AX7 has a lot more gain than a 12AU7 by a factor of 40( I believe) a 12AX7 has a gain factor of 100%. Thanks for the mention guys! Don B.

    The change of speakers was astonishing. Worlds apart. Speakers imho are about 50% of the overall tone of an amp. The 12ax7 mod is cool for the thicker distortion, but the mojo is gone. Swapping preamp tubes without circuit compensation is a give and take thing.

    Just skip to 34:06 if you’re interested in the AC-10 comparison. It definitely needed the 12AX7 and the extra treble from the tone control that he gave it just before that, which is what Doug kept trying to say without saying it bluntly. That tone is a dead ringer to their original to my ears. Sounds glorious.

    I like that Henry srt+ amp. It's very similar to the Vox AC10 SRT. Im listening through phones. I think I can get a better representation of the difference in sound that way. For me theres not a lot between the two amps, although I did prefer the Vox AC10 SRT. Also, I was impressed by the Weber ceramic speaker. Was better than I expected. The Heritage H150 guitar youre playing is a beautiful sounding instrument. In the end, my opinión is that you can not go far wrong with the equipment youre playing but the lesson I took from this is.. that I feel it's the player who is responsible for wheather you get a good sound or not from the equipment youre playing. A bad player on the same equipment will still sound bad. You made that equipment sound great and that's not something everyone can do. I enjoyed the video and music as always.. Thanks Pat and Doug.

  • @frantisca
    @frantisca 5 років тому +3

    From what I heard before, JP does an awesome job with his Henry Amplification line. This one is confirming it. Together with the Heritage/Amber PU's, it sounds to my ear like the tone in the Beano album, with just a bit less pearcing frequencies in the treble area. Which is good ! Weber is OK, but nothing to compare with the couple of 65' Vox speakers. 12AU gives you lots of more headroom, but the 12AX7 allows you to rise quicker in the crunch tones. You eventually can try a 5751 as an alternative \m/ P.S.: nice upgraded blue Volkswagen you've got there ;-) Have a nice break, see you in July :)

    I really can't afford any of this vintage vox stuff or vintage Gibson's so I use a couple pedals for tone and drive, I use a vox flat 4 boost pedal (really similar to top boost circuit) and then run the Klon klone into that for serious Brian may laser distortion and run that into a crate vintage club 50 2X12 combo bone stock and it's a thrill that I haven't been able to get out of any other amp, it's my vox tone I guess since I don't have REAL vox amps !??! I dont want to be a wet blanket, but I think most of the tone in that amp is in Doug's very skilled hands. The very first episode he played through the ac10 and a Marshall 2061, but sounded very similar IMO. I just dont want a bunch of people buying this amp just to find out they sound like themselves. Sounds like the same thing Phil X did with the evil robot.
    By the way, I met Doug and Pat at the vintage show. great guys!!!

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Brian, this comment is important and correct but we also think that our viewers are aware that the fingers are where it starts for great tone. The assumption we're making at this point in our show's history is if you hear these sounds in your head and find them here on this channel with Doug doing the demos then you have most of what you need to achieve that tone. But you can't leave anything out (player/guitar/speakers/pickups etc) or you will end up where Brian described above. We also think the Henry has more of that kind of mojo we get in our demos using the Vox than the Marshall, at least in our studio live. We know the Marshall is a great amp. It's just not the sound we hear in our heads. D&P

    Hey guys, I know you must get a lot of requests for doing a specific demo but several years ago I was gifted a Vox inspired Ugly 18. Unlike some other "inspired by" amps the Ugly 18 does not have a 'verb or a trem but what it has is a dead simple tone and volume layout. It utilizes two volume knobs and two volume inputs that you can bridge with "y" cable like some Marshalls. One volume bypasses the tone control while the other is connected to a master tone and you can blend the two "channels" by raising and lowering the volume knobs. While it's not a bang-on Vox clone I think it fits into the kind of tonal range you guys usually play with.

    Interesting that you should mention 8 to 10 on the controls. Most people do not realise that commercial mass produced rotary potentiometers have neutral zones at either end of the track where the connections are made. The carbon tracks are flashed with a metal film so that the riveted end terminals make good contact. As a result most pots don't change at all for the first and last several degrees of their rotation. It does vary, depending on the manufacture of the pot, but these neutral zones can be as much as 30 degrees of the rotation at either end (in a total rotation of 300 degrees). That's an astounding total of 60 degrees rotation that do absolutely nothing. On a 0 to 10 pot knob at least 0 to 1 and 9 to 10 do nothing.

    This oughta be a fun amp to try with different preamp tubes. An NOS 5751 will drop the gain compared to a 12AX7, a 12AT7 a bit more still (most AT7s aren’t intended for V1 or even V2 gain stages but the current Electro-Harmonix long plate version sounds really good), etc. I’d probably start with a 12AY7 in the second preamp tube spot…more gain than the stock AU7 but should be less compressed than the higher gain types.

    I just wanted to say that I was very happy to find your UA-cam channel. I am very impressed by the fact that you have been promoting quite a few boutique pickup companies. I have a request. It is all good and well if someone has the money to fork out 4 to 6 hundred dollars for a pickup upgrade but many musicians as you know might not have the money for such a purchase. For example, what about the guy who has a Epiphone LP or cheaper Gibson Tribute or Studio Guitar who wants that PAF sound. Would it be possible to do shoot out of some of the mainstream production PAF style pickups? For example, it would be very cool to hear what a DiMarzio 36th Anniversary, Seymore Duncan Perly Gates or similar would sound like in comparison to Oscar or higher end boutique pups.

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  4 роки тому

      We get what you're saying and we have done a few with good results such as the Duncan Antiquity and Lollar Imperials and a number of small makers who are reasonable. But bottom line for us is we are going after the real deal and in our case it's the 1958 Les Paul known as Oscar. Relatively speaking the cost of a set of Duncan Antiquities pales in comparison to a real "burst" or even a real PAF or early patent pickup. We are finding some amazing sounding PAF clones that are expensive (for some reason) and have also found that the really low priced stuff doesn't do it for us. As always, it's a matter of your instrument, amp, pickups and player. Find a set of used Duncans and that should be a good start. D&P

      The Doug and Pat Show
      Thanks. You are absolutely correct. There are a lot of factors involving the sound of any given guitar. I come from the same era as you when you could pick up ten different guitars of the same model and they would be very different. Remember the days of the Fender and Gibson camps? There might be an oddball Gretch, Rickenbacker, or Dan Electro player. I was a Fender guy. Lol. Anyways,. I just wanted to say that I recently bought my first Les Paul. It only took 45 years.... Your show is invaluable. It is great to learn and hear the nuances of these vintage LPs and the like from players like the two of you who have been playing them for decades. Keep up the good work! I did want to ask. What are your opinions regarding the 2019 Gibson Heritage '60s' and '50s' series guitars?

    Question. What pots caps ect are currently in the heritage? The amber spirt of 59 picks seem to sound much closer than most. How much of that tone is pickups and how much is wiring harness??

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  4 роки тому

      Dan, in our ever changing Heritage H150 there are currently VIP pots that have been manufactured to the original Centralab spec, they measure about 515K. A vintage bumblebee cap in the bridge and a newer silver type cap in the neck. Those and the Amber Spirit of '59 pickups sound pretty good to us. D&P

    Whomever ends up with this amp has to realize that the output transform needs a good 20 hours to open up and break-in. The original JMI that that you have probably has 100’s of hours of playing time on it.

  • @grahamhaynes4284
    @grahamhaynes4284 5 років тому

    Love the show but why didn't you demo the Henry SRT through the Vox cab? From what I was hearing, the AC10 SRT sounded more open (which I like) and the Henry SRT+ sounds more compressed but then again I've got cheap computer speakers and both my ears are 69 years old. Any chance of a Top Gear style Corvair v Cayman, rear engine comparison, to finally prove that old is always better than new. Maybe play some Robert Johnson licks while sat on the Porsche?

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  5 років тому

      If by the Vox cabinet you mean the one we run the AC10 through, we actually did run the Henry through it. It's important to make a level playing field and that was the first thing you heard from the Henry. Then through the Weber speaker. Doug had a Corvair back in the seventies, not much is going to happen there. D&P

      Thanks. I must have been in a kerfuffle yesterday (or maybe I dozed off), because I missed the whole Henry/vintage Celestions bit. The Henry sounds great through the vintage celestions.
      Doug's 'mocker' comment made me chuckle. Back in my yoof I had rocker mates and I had mod mates. I rode motorbikes and berated scooters but wore clothes that were more mod than rocker, because they attracted a better class of bird (can I still say that?). We were labeled 'mockers'.

    Hey guys, will yous PLEASE, PURTY PLEASE do a review on the VIPots. You already tried their pickups, the LOVERS set, but I would really like to know what you’d think about their pots. Which are supposed to be near-exact replacements/replicas of the old CentraLab pots that are SO revered. I have a 4-pot set of them, and I feel they are amazing, but like many people that watch your videos, I’ve never played a guitar with the original CentraLabs. Let alone real PAF’s, or a real ‘burst. Thus is why I enjoy your videos so much. But, I would really like to know what you think about those pots. Hopefully you guys will do a video on them. Maybe: “Wiring harness: Fact or Fiction II”!lol just a thought. Thanks!
