Doug/Pat - Thanks so much for making this video, very much looking forward to the reveal on 1/23/19. I'd surely be happy with any one of these guitars especially if I had a '65 Vox AC-10 SRT and '65 Celestion Alnico Silvers to play through. You made each of the guitars sound great. 😊
Here'a my guess on which guitar is which:
    1. '85 Tokai “Love Rock”
    2. Pat’s Stock ‘95 Gibson R9 LP
    3. Dale’s 2013 Gibson R9 LP w/ early Patent # pups
    4. '58 Gibson Gold Top LP aka “Oscar”
    5. '94 Heritage H-150 w/ Amber “spirit of ‘59” pups

Its very true, listening without seeing takes on a whole new meaning, i listened quite a few times

Awesome guys, keep it up, love the show.

Great show guys. Really liked the layout with the slider. I thought #1 was my favourite but when I heard 5 I thought “whoa”. I went back to 1. I’m not sure what 5 is but it kills. Sharp, bright, grungy! It’s my favourite. I hope it’s Oscar. Now I have to see the follow up show. Thank for doing this.

Super awesome video guys, thanks for putting in so much work!👏👏
    #3 is Oscar.
    My guesses for the rest:
    #1 sounds next best, Dale’s R9
    #2 stock R9 (or Tokai)
    #4 Heritage
    #5 Tokai (or R9)
Just goes to show what a quality amp will do for lesser pickups. UA-cam compression also levels the field.

I’m guessing but I’m going 1) Heritage, 2) Pats R9, 3) Dales R9, 4) Oscar 5) Tokai. Only reason is Number 4 sounded incredible so I’m assuming it was the vintage guitar, but no idea if this was actually Oscar! Great video guys, looking forward to being proven completely wrong on the 23rd! :-)

Guitars 4 and 5 are close for me but Oscar I think is number 4. I think number 5 could be the R9 with the pattern number pickups. The rest, I have no idea. Thanks for the great shows fellas!

First of all! Happy new year! Great show! And also an incredibly hard challenge. So my ears and wallet would like it to be...
    1) tokai
    2) heratage
    3) sunburst with raw p.a.f.s
    4) Oscar!!
    5) the other one left.
Sorry lost my train of thought.
Regardless I would love to play any of them, anyway thanks for the awesome show and all of the effort it takes to do this.
Oh and Doug if you actually give lessons I live in Oregon and would like to sign up. Seriously!

Numero uno es el Oscar. They all have it to a degree but it’s mostly the feel. All great. It’s a fools game if you’re just getting into now. You had to be there. Had the British blues invasion never occurred, I doubt we’d even be talking about it in this elevated air. Wouldn’t change the fact that this guitar recipe sounds stellar. Yes, the tree makes a sound and it’s the sound of thunder and of gods. It is nostalgic, of a day and unique in our timeline. It can be approached, always revisited but never repeated. With every new day, it’s never felt better to look back to this part of our golden era.

Hi guys, I hope I can find this to check if i'm right. I recon guitars 1, 4 and 5 are gibsons. Guitar 1 by miles is Oscar - sounds so thick and articulate with plenty of harmonic overtone. 4 I think is the 95 R9 and guitar 5 is Dale's R9. 2 and 3 not in the same ball park to me. By far no'1 sounded Incredible. I myself have 4 gibson CSRI guitars from 2000 to 2017. I can hear subtle differences in them so I can find out how good my gibson ear is. Thank you guys, what you do is unique and invaluable. I really appreciate your contribution to the industry.

Thanks Doug and Pat yet again. Lots of insight here on capturing "that tone." Maybe you have done this before but, since i am a little late to the party, i'll ask anyway. Have you ever compared Les Paul copies in the $500-$1000 range like the Epiphones and PRS SE Singlecuts to see if "that tone" can be approximated? Just curious for those of us who can't afford any of the guitars you are testing or talk about. I love what you guys are doing and your shows have me hooked on geeking out on this stuff again. It never ends. And your playing is superb Doug! Very toneful with lots of nuance and feel. You are a player! Blessings in the new year!

they all sounded great which means that there is a purpose for your show! I think oscar was #3, #2 was the brightest so would guess the Tokai, #1 I would guess was amber pickups/heritage (which sounded awesome), #4 was Dale's R9 with paf number, and #5 was pat's stock R9. Regardless of results, all of those guitars sounded great and would be happy with any of those tones

Hey Guys. I have no idea but I have gone back and forth with this and picked my favorite based on my style and ears. I leaned on 4 because of the neck pickup but ended up going to 3. I think 3 has less gain but great clarity in both pickups. 3 with the win for me. It could do everything I need. Can’t wait to see which one it is. Thanks!

This was a fun listen! My guess is that 1, 3 & 5 are, in no particular order: Oscar, the Amber-equipped Heritage and the Pat #-equipped R9. 2 is probably Pat’s stock R9 & 4 the Tokai. The only one I thought was too over-aggressive/modern sounding was 2. Of 1, 3 & 5 I’d take any of ‘em, but in particular the one that played & felt best to me.

  • @TheMoodyedge

Great video and as usual, very interesting. Compliments for the playing, really nice!
Any idea what LS number the Tokai is? If it has fret edge binding it would be an LS80 given the PU's were unbranded. They would have been Gotoh's.
I'm my opinion, 5 is Oscar, coz of the brightness and slighly higher volume. Rest I couldn't tell, all sounded really good.

  • @davidmoss8993

Iv'e had a think about this, putting them in order for me was too tough, they all sound awesome.

  • @MarcRauchbach

First of all you obviously managed to make them all sound absolutely amazing! The Vox is an absolute monster, and Doug you're not the worst Player also ;-). My guess - and this truly is only a guess - would be that number 4 was Oscar, as I think it sounded the most "alive", to my ears anyway. Number 1 I thought was a bit hotter than the others, and a bit more compressed. Number 2 was a little dark to my ears, Number 3 was also more on the dark side, but I found it to be a touch more dynamic/responsive than 2. As I said I think 4 was Oscar, and 5 again a touch more aggressive and compressed. My favourites were 3 and 4. But they all sounded great, excited for the reveal!

I dont really care which one is oscar. I just want to own Guitar #3 Actually I do care which one is oscar and im hoping its not #3 because I want #3 to be attainable by mere mortals.
The clean notes on #3 had outstanding clarity.. and the points of breakup were the sweetest and chewiest. PLEASE let it be a reissue or the Love Rock.. gets on knees and prays.

  • @jessefillmore

To me , the demonstration proves that it's the tiny details that separate these guitars sonically . I own a 2016 R9 reissue and it's the best guitar I've ever played . I was always seeking a Gibson . The tones , the feel is what I like . If you are seeking a Gibson do yourself a favor and buy a Gibson Custom shop . I have a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Traditional and when I play it after I play the R9 I can feel , hear how much better the R9 is . The Traditional is a boat anchor and the tone is bad cause the ones that came in it are too high output . Thanks for the demo Doug and Pat !!! Happy New Year !!!!

#3 and #5 sound the closest to the 1960 PAFs I own. It's a very difficult test. However, what I liked about these two pickups was the brightness and the airiness with a wee bit of wool draped over each. #5 had some good attack on the bridge. #3 was no slouch, but there was a little more bite going on in #5 in that position, to my ear.

  • @zelon1983

Another great video guys. The only guitar I didn't like the sound of in this recording was #2. #5 wasn't great, but not too bad either. If I were to guess, I say #1 was the Tokai, #2 was the 1995 R9, #3 was Oscar (it just had the extra magic something, to me at least), #4 was the R9 with pat no (could be the Tokai though) and #5 was the Heritage. Now off to check the results! (:see no evil:)

    My guess on the guitars:
    1. Tokai Love rock
    2. 1995 R9
    3. Oscar
    4. 2013 R9
    5. Heritage H-150

This video clearly demonstrates to me how much influence player and style have over the overall sound, the difference that I hear in THE RECORDINGS are generally subtle and hard to ascribe "value judgement" to. If you were in the room, I think it would be a bit easier to distinguish differences. Here were my thoughts.
Guitar 1 - Neck not super clear
    - Bridge pickup loud and aggressive, not subtle, good pinchy sound
Guitar 2 - Neck - clearer than 1, but somewhat generic sounding to me
    - Bridge - kind of midrangey, more generic sounding

    Guitar 3 - Neck - Has some pinchy-ness
    - Bridge - very full bodied, more than 1 & 2, more PAF-like

Guitar 4 - Neck is clear, loud, bright neck, some good pinchyness
    - Bridge is very strong, bright, aggressive, great sustain, most nasal sounding
Guitar 5 - Neck is clear, not as loud / bright as some others (certainly 4)
, seems to respond to playing subtleties well
    - Bridge is bright, clear, most percussive, not as nasal as 4.
I don't know which is which. 4 seemed to be the loudest/most aggressive...therefore I would think it is NOT Oscar. I think 5 might be Oscar...beyond those notions, I have no idea which is which. Some other thoughts - I sure which Doug would play cleaner sometimes, chords sometimes and both pickups together sometimes. To me, those are very revealing (if not more) when compared to his typical single note shredding. Personally, I spend sooo much more time playing chords and plenty of time on position 2, adjusting the pickup balance with the vol pots. That's the other thing he almost never does, is back off the pots so you get a feel for "taper behavior" which is also very important/revealing, IMO. Now, with all that whining out of the way, lol, I will say, I really enjoy the D & P show; it's always entertaining, interesting and often insightful. Thank you fellas!

I listened to all of the neck pickups first, then went back to the bridge pups. No. 1 had the slightly airy and more hollow sound that I've heard in MHS pickups....but those are fairly new. I figured the '58 may no longer have the same sound due to weakened magnets, but I could be wrong in that regard because the tone was exactly what I expected to hear...but it's (the airy hollowish sound) the sound I like best of all five. I ended up ranking them in the order I liked them rather than by which I thought was most likely to be Oscar. So...1, 4, 3, 2 and 5.
edit: added for clarification: (the airy hollowish sound) and this: but I could be wrong in that regard because the tone was exactly what I expected to hear

Bridge pickup thoughts: 1 good clarity, 2 ice picky, 3 darker, 4 most typical LP sound, 5 crispy... Here's my guesses:
    1- Dale's R9

I think Guitar #1 is Oscar due to Pat's playing on it. Seems to be in line with his connection with that guitar and the Billy Gibbons leaning playing style. That Said I prefer the sound of Guitar #5 overall. It sounds the most balanced to my ears. So hopefully thats the Tokai or a reissue and I got a chance in hell of picking one up... Good luck all!

  • @drunclear

    Wonderful idea.
For me 3 and 5 stood out, with 5 being Oscar - no doubt!
    1. Pat's stock R9
    2. Tokai (this one sounded the muddiest to me)
    3. Heritage with Ambers. The neck is a dead-ringer for oscar. Bridge doesn't quite have the same "body"
    4. Dale's R9. Brightest of the bunch
    5. Oscar! So much depth and body, especially stands out comparing the bridge pu.
Now I have to wait for Jan 23... :)

Number 1. Very, very nice. Number 2. Sounded a bit wooly, blanket over the speaker type thing. Number 3. Very nice. Number 4. my favourite of the bunch. Will stick my neck out and say this is Oscar. Number 5. Sounded a bit brighter and more aggressive than the rest. (Not a plus point). So in order of preference - 4-1-3-5-2. No idea which any of them are, but would gladly take any!

  • @streetrockusa
    @streetrockusa 5 років тому

My favorite is 3, followed by 5, then 2, 1, an 4 the last. 3 & 5 sounded pretty close, 2 seemed like it had some kind of vintage mojo working for it. So my guess will be 3 Oscar. I didn't really like 4 it sounded like one of the newer guitars youd find at guitar center.

  • @CentaurusRelax314

I have no idea which is which, but i'll list my preferences in order: 2/3, 1, 5, 4.
But, listening through headphones gives me different results than through my HK SoundSticks/computer speakers. Can't wait for the reveal. They're all great. The Amp, though-that's a bad mofo-the winner and great equalizer. I'd like to hear my Epiphone Les Paul 1960s Tribute Plus with Classic 57s through that amp. I have a feeling, in Doug's hands, it would be pretty good, too. Can't wait, also, for the updates on the 'amp clones.' An SRT at (closer to) mortal prices.... Now i just need to get a house so i can play it at decent volumes.

    1) Heritage
    2) 2013 R9
3)Oscar- really sings, notes leap off the fretboard, loud, smooth and best sustain
4)Tokai - this guitar sounded thinnest
    5) 2005 R9 most well rounded of them all

    3, 4, 5, 1, 2

#3+#4: Great, #2: Good, #1+#5: Not as good. 1st place I'd give to #4. I hope #3 is the Heritage with Amber pickups. To my ears that would be a great result in getting a close, cost-effective tone as per your 'German Engineering' video. Really liked hearing the variety of Les Pauls that you picked out - that was a great test in of itself - hearing the R9s in with the Tokai and Heritage is interesting too.

I’ve never seen you measure the gausian flux of the magnets on your paf’s. Please measure the magnetic strength of your pickups. That is the key

I'm not going to guess which guitar is which
But number 2 and number 4 were my stand out favs
on the bridge nothing much to choose between them
on the neck 2 takes the win
if a guitar sounds good and plays well and most importantly inspires you , who cares where it was built and what name is on the headstock ( well apart from snobs and collectors )
find a guitar that speaks to you and play it .

Listened to the five first to choose my favourite (i.e. without being influenced by 'which' guitar it might be). My favourite sound was #4, only by a whisker from #5. Who knows what UA-cam has done to the audio, but I kept playing back the recordings to try and fit the sound to each of the five. Not sure if 'my' favourite subliminally made me say that one 'must' therefore be Oscar, but here's my view: #1 - 1985 Tokai; #2 - 2013 R9; #3 - 1994 Heritage H-150; #4 - OSCAR; #5 - 1995 R9.

    5 - Oscar, 1 - Heritage, 3 - Stock R9, 2 - R9 with PAF, 4 - Tokai. Actually I don't have a clue but these are my choices and I'm sticking by them ( for now ).

    I'm guessing:
    1 - Heritage with Ambers
    2 - R9 with PATs
    3 - 1995 R9
    4 - Oscar
    5 - Tokai
Overall I like 4, then 3, then 5 and 1, then 2 (much preferred the bridge to the neck pickup on 2)

I don't know but guitar 5 Sounds like it has the harmonic bite in the bridge pickup so it maybe the Oscar. I REALLY like the sounds of 3 and 4 so there you have it.

Cool video! I think Oscar is probably #3 or #2 which are my two favorites. #1 is way too dark, the others are OK.

  • @slightleeguitarded8787

I prefer the sound of #4 because the neck p/u wasn't as muddy as the others. I would like to go from the bridge p/u to the neck p/u and just have a little thicker warmer sound...not from biting to muddy which most all 2hb's seem to do.
In a band situation though I don't think you could tell difference between any of them really.
    Enjoy the show thanks.

Oscar has some high frequencies at the bridge that Rings like Bells (almost microphonic in a good way, you can hear at 30:17min )... The only PAF that come close to Oscar was the Amber Spirit of 59'!!
For that Reason I am pretty sure:
Nr. 1 - Heritage H-150 with Amber "Spirit of 59'
    Nr. 2 -
    Nr. 3 -
    Nr. 4 -
    Nr. 5 - Oscar

Gonna study up, but I'm thinking number 4 is Oscar. PS The AC-10 project should be finished with the second stage mods some time soon. Sure hope we can get close to yours. It sounds really good in this video. also, nice chops Doug. I've heard Pat is even better than you, but doesn't want to show off! Not that your showing off Doug. Right?

Haven’t seen the results yet. Have to go
    1- Stock R9
    2- Dales
    3- H150
    4- Oscar
    5- Tokai
Could be wrong on all but Oscar being 4.

In order of Best to worst(they all sound good)
3- I like it the most, clearest, nice bloom, not too hot, I think it’s Oscar
5- close to 3, hotter bridge, good clarity, brighter than 3; R9 with pat number?
4- big difference from 3 and 5, darker not as clear but still had good undertones; idk the heritage?
1&2- darker still, much less clarity, not too eventful, great for a bar giging guitar; don’t know the order but the stock R9 and the Tokai.
3&5 stand out from the rest.

Wow 3 up loads in about 30 days. I figured I would have to wait until March for anything new from Doug and Pat. So thanks for feeding my (pAf) addiction. Now on the blind taste test, I would have to say that I would be happy with any of those tones for my self. Not going to try a guess what guitar is what. I am going to say what my prefrence is. Favor was number 4 followed closely by number 3. After that it went 2 5 then 1. So if you could send me guitar number 4 that would be great.
