  • Doug and Pat take a look at a couple of high priced Gibson "dead on this time" R9 Les Paul's and again ask the question: how do you know it's exactly like a true '58-59-60 burst, do you have one? They compare them to a couple vintage guitars to see if they are indeed "clones". Let's look at the details and see how they compare because friends-Gibson is charging you a premium for the honor of owning one. Maybe there are some details you can use for your next purchase unless you just don't care. Then you're on your own.

Just want to say thankyou so much for your series over the last 8 years, I really enjoyt a non hyperbolic and gentle discussion about guitars from people who know what they're talking about and that's what you've done over the lasrt 49 episodes (I watched em all). Hoping you'll find a reason to continue the series, but if not thanks for everything you've done and all the best!

This video really resonated with me. As a younger guy (I'm 26) I really appreciate learning more about the details and history of these guitars. I'm really thankful that you took your time to share your knowledge - solid facts and not just "it's magic cause it's a 59". I can really see the small things that add up for the vibe and look.
I almost fell out of my chair when the "sound doesn't matter" bomb was dropped - and I agree 100% with that. I own quite a few nice guitars - such as the Traditional you see in my profile pic - and I'm very happy with them after a few mods. I see no need to chase unicorns any further. Cheers from Brazil!

    Hello Doug and Pat!
It's so sad that you want to stop the Doug and Pat show. I've been following you for years and have always enjoyed attending your tests and wisdom. You have always shown new aspects and examined the greatest guitars of all time. You gave your viewers the sound of a variety of Gibson guitars and explained the differences. You also explained very well that the sound of a good amplifier is the main component of a good guitar sound - pure - only guitar and amplifier! I think that many young guitarists could benefit from it - even a few older years.
I will miss it and I will miss you!
Thank you for 8 fantastic years!

Great video, great topic. I have never been a big fan of Les Pauls, none of my main influences were those original guys who brought fame and notoriety to the Bursts, so they just never held the hallowed ground in my heart as the holy grail instruments. As a player I find them awkward and severely limiting and they just don't work for me. But of course I respect those original players and for certain things you just can't beat a good LP. I've been lucky enough to work on and play great ones of nearly every year (except for '52 and '54) thanks to working at a great shop with knowledgeable and resourceful people. I've played Tom Murphy aged R7s, R8s, R9s and R0s, I've played Collectors Choices, I've played reissues from '68 til today, custom shops, heritages, etc. The one common denominator between them all is that they're all different,
The cork sniffer culture is mostly internet forum dorks, most of whom have never played or worked on old guitars and they're just parroting back what they're read or heard is "the best" and they want to impress people by showing that they like "the best". And the overwhelming majority of them can barely play anyway. So I just can't devote any time to paying any attention to those people, it's not worth the time. You like what you like and you want what you want and that's all fine and dandy, but that doesn't mean you're right and what like/want is "the best". In fact nobody's opinion really matters at all because we're all so selfishly wrapped up in our own ideas anyway.
It's factual, education and history I crave and you guys have it in spades. We all tend to forget just how much music and the technology we use to make it has changed since the fifties. Trying to get more volume and gain before amplifiers could really do it. How at one point, the guitars with higher output to push the front ends of amps were "the good ones" and the weaker, low output ones weren't. And now here we are today, back to low output being "the good ones", and it's changed so many times in between.
You can't go back in time. You can't make them like they did back then, and even if you could they were all different! But what you can do is play them and see what inspires you. If a real '59 inspires you like no other guitar, great! But it just isn't universal. Someone could give me any real '59 and sure, I'll enjoy it by myself, I'll covet it for its value and history, but I'd never play it as my main guitar onstage, in rehearsal or in the studio because they just don't work for me. That's not to say they're bad or it's their fault, it's all on me of course. But that said, no Les Paul of any year, make or model will ever be my "best" guitar And no forum warrior could ever come up with an argument of reason why I could possibly be wrong about why Lee Pauls just aren't conducive to my style of playing, and they just can't handle that fact. I've had Les Pauls and I just sold my last one. I tried and I'd rather have a dozen other guitars in its place.
So take the cork sniffers with a grain of salt. They really want to think they're right and they're amazing and are impressing you, but their opinion ultimately only matters to them and is most likely completely irrelevant to you. For the guys who believe the cork sniffers and share their opinion, just know that they still make good guitars today and they made bad guitars back then. The Peter Green/Gary Moore/now Kirk Hammett LP could be considered a mistake and look at it's history. You can find something that inspires you and really works well for your playing from pretty much any year. It doesn't HAVE to be a '59 burst with the big neck, PAFs, original plastic and perfect top carve.
It might even be a (gasp) Epiphone! :D

This is sensible, and exactly how I feel. The internet has a lot to answer for, one way or another.

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 4 роки тому

twerpeater It’s the people who make the internet (especially forums) the way it is. 🤷🏼‍♂️ That’s just human nature, all the internet does is facilitate. Fortunately the internet also facilitates a lot of very positive things and at the end of the day it’s up to us how and to what extent we engage with the parts of it that we don’t like personally.
Regarding the original poster’s comments though I also agree with him as you do. I’ve never played an original 1950s Les Paul... the closest I ever came was an offer at Chicago Music Exchange but they couldn’t find the key to the cabinet for Scarface and I didn’t want the potential heartbreak/risk of it making my reissues forever feel ordinary so I didn’t push the matter. 😝 However, anyone with any sense knows that there were good ones, average ones and almost certainly poor ones, amongst that batch of vintage guitars, just like there are in any production of guitars. Maybe those proportions are different for those vintage guitars due to manufacturing methods, production volumes, materials (some materials such as Brazilian rosewood just can’t be used anymore for instruments with the production volumes of Gibson’s Historics), the workforce, or whatever, but not all vintage instruments are good just because they’re vintage. The chasing after a “more and more accurate” reissue is and always has been marketing spin and I don’t blame Gibson for it. Sure, some of the aspects need to be done a certain way to be vintage accurate (long neck tenon being a good example) but some of the other optimisations Gibson talk about such as neck shapes or top carves weren’t fixed on the originals so they can’t be recreated to be anything more than generally representative of the vintage era they are recreating at best.
I also love Les Pauls. I’m not a traditional “Les Paul type of player”... I’m mostly a rhythm guitarist, don’t play blues/blues rock/classic rock and play more experimental progressive rock/indie/ambient stuff, but I just love the feel and sound of the Les Paul (I’m sure the “feel” part of that is because I learned on an LP copy, my first good guitar was a Gibson Les Paul Standard, and my main gigging guitar was an R8 for more than a decade, so they just feel like “home”). I have no need for other people to love them though. It’s ok for me that I do. I don’t like Strats, but just like the original commenter here and his view on Les Pauls I don’t claim that makes them inherently bad guitars... they’re just not for me (in either playability or sound) and that’s fine.

I enjoy working within a set of limitations, it pushes me to find the notch within that works for me.
As far as cork sniffing... well I suspect that a lot of folks really want to feel like they are a part of that past historic brilliance they recall. By having a guitar that is as close to that as possible fills them with warm fuzzies maybe? How far they can take these details depends on how affluent they are... I tend to pursue vintage inspired more than vintage accurate since my affluence is limited. Hey if you can afford it, and you want it why not?

This is great Pat & Doug. The vast majority of us guitar players (I've been playing since the late 80's & live in Australia) will never even get to see an original 50's or 60's Les Paul. The closest we will ever get is a Gibson Custom Shop. I've had about 5 Les Pauls over the years, customs and standards, and they're all gone. What I have is a Custom Shop R7 and it is sensational. This doesn't mean that every GCS guitar will be sensational. You have to try them out, unplugged first, then plugged in to see if you love it. At the end of the day, playing it through a JTM45 brings a smile to my face, what else is playing a guitar about? Take care

I once had a Heritage 335 clone. Saved up for a year to buy it. Made the terrible mistake of buying it without playing it (the nearest UK dealer was 200 miles from my house)... turned out to be an utter dog. Two pro setups and it wouldn't stay in tune. Looked beautiful and played like crap. I guess I was unlucky, but my most disappointing gear purchase by a mile.

Oh, and now that I've watched the full video, I gotta say, I'll never have an original (due to cost) and more than likely never have a reissue either for the same reason. My LP now is a 2018 tribute model. I changed both pickups to burstbucker 1, and a creamtone harness. It can be very bright on the bridge, but that's what the kinks are for. As of now, it satisfies my LP jones.

Mark Agnesi in an interview said all the new 2019 R9’s used Bonamassa’s Carmelita as their benchmark guitar. They scanned it and used the measurements of that guitar for all of their new R9’s. Still is interesting to see there is still differences between the old and new ones. But at the end of the day, we all can agree it is the player that makes any guitar. Very interesting video guys!

  • @robertthompson6302
    @robertthompson6302 4 роки тому

    Hey guys
Robert here, like many, I’ve enjoyed your shows ... I too am a Les Paul freak and understand the never ending mysterious journey of fascination these original pieces of musical instrument art hold in the depth of our imaginations. One thing I have always noticed owning the original Gibson’s from the 50’s, is THE WOOD. I feel the eastern Maple and the Honduran Mahogany that was available back then was just a generation of wood we will never see again. Yes, we all can try to find wood that comes close, but it was just a time where old growth trees were still around etc. I truly feel that is a huge part of the magic and personality of the Gibson instruments and the same idea applies to the electronics and other materials used on the guitars... they were from a different time... a different attitude and care... not better, but just a different era in so many ways you almost can’t compare no matter how hard we try.
Thank you so much for your endless wonder, it has been something I can relate too and just a great reminder how the instruments and music of that special time in history will never be repeated... And deserves all of our love and respect... And with that respect, hoping maybe we can carry on a bit of that magic as we go. Be well .

Im legitimately glad that there are folks who care about the details. It benefits the people like me who have little connection to the originals (by the time I was born the dominant form of music had already shifted away from Les Pauls towards offsets) but do think the old guitars _sound_ aces. As such, the race to clone pickups has resulted in me having a nice sounding Les Paul, that humorously is slightly different in its deficiencies re cloning the originals than your two examples.

Whatever the Secret Sauce is, it sounds like an ES -335 without the feedback - throaty like your guitar is coming down with a cold. Every note blooms whether in a chord or alone. And yet it screams when pushed. Most "clones" don't offer this. There are a few that do and you've got to play 'em to find 'em

To be honest I was surprised at how well the 2019 sounded but I got the impression that Jayne was easier for you to play either because it's what you're use to or simply because of the way it's set up? But there's that almost un definable slight fuzziness on both jayne and Oscar when you're digging into the pickup has kind of fuzzy compression that was almost there of the 2019 and I didn't think it was there at all on the Murphy so maybe gibson is getting closer with their Electronics? Now all they need to do is get it right with the wood carves. And now you have me jonesing for one of those rumbleseat guitars that are actually carved correctly thanks a hell of a lot

It is a 2012 R9, with 2013 specs (apparently more accurate to the historic bursts: Hyde glue, long tenon, etc.) and fitted with a rounded, ‘59 shape neck, not too thick, not too wide, solid, light weighed mahogany, beautiful flamed top, VOS finish, AL3 unpotted CustomBuckers … You better save, wait and check until you find the right one. It took me personally several decades, but it was worth the wait !! Cheers guys: keep on taking care of those lovely Oscar and Jayne !

I have a Greco egf 850 1981 and it has all the details of the originals you describe. Headstock veneer, neck break angle and thickness, rounded neck binding and body carve dish up to the selector switch and horn. Plastics color mismatch and all. I paid $1,500.

Eventhough I'd never be able to justify buying a vintage or custom shop re-issue, and am by no means a "cork sniffer," I enjoy these guys shows because they really pay attention to details. I've missed them and the awsome sound of that Vox AC10 SRT. I've heard about Gibson's decal issues before but the discussion about the dishtop stood out IMOP.

Amazing episode guys ...of course eye opener for many people but also many other tiny details still way out of measurement, when it come to sound let’s face it good guitar is good guitar and if it’s the right piece of wood then you are there, we are blessed with many great boutique pickup wonders and honestly big big difference come from the pots and VIP pots made amazing big difference in taper and the way you can hear the details and sweet honk of old PAF type of guitar

Doug and Pat you guys should get together or maybe just call and talk to Dave Stephens of Stephens Design pickups. He is a great guy and I think he has really went deep into learning the differences in everything from the pickups to the bridges and stop tails etc. He has that real passion like you guys and has great ears. I like his playing too. He gets the real deal tones.

Comments disabled on the Kemper video. I guess we can all imagine why that might be the case. It still leaves the question of the Tone Master Deluxe Reverb unanswered. If you're not going to do it just say "we're not going to do it" and then we'll know.

If Gibson actually cloned one perfect they wouldn’t be able to say every year this model is the closest to the original. Do you really believe Gibson can’t look at a real 59 and make a copy? They do it on purpose.

Bitter sweet.... Looking forward to whatever weirdness you guys have in store for the future. Big fan and ex-relative of Pat's, and also played in a band that opened for Doug when he was with Johnny and the Distractions at the old "Night Owl" in Salem. This was a few weeks after some ass hat came in and shot up the place.... Do you remember? I think we were the only two bands that had the huevos to play there...Good times..

An insightful look into Fender reissues would be a good place to start a new series. They start in the Mexican range and ascend up to the Masterbuilt range. A lot of guitar geeks are obsessed with these instruments. Who better than you to explore these guitars?

Since 2013 the historic reissues have been tremendous. Sure maybe there’s still a few small details that aren’t exactly like they were in the 50’s but we are talking about a few thousand dollars vs a few hundred thousand dollars. My 2013 R8 with custom buckers is a rock machine.
