- Dang these noisy little pickups can make some great sounds! But how great? Let's listen to four sets in a '95 Gibson Les Paul Special and compare them to a real deal '56 Les Paul Special. Pickups from Reilander, Organic, Onamac Windery and ThroBak all weigh in on P90 tone, all with a little bit something different going on. And just because you asked us, a '63 Gibson Melody Maker just for fun.

Love your videos. The winding converts the magnetic charge into electricity. Two mags means more mag flux -more power -more output. More fun!

Wow! Found this at just the right time. Sat down this morning to do some P 90 research for a project guitar, and found you guys. Nice to see some well done demos, especially by guys who look like me! Definitely gonna keep following your channel. I've watched both shootouts, and honestly, you could have just quit after the '54 LP. There was an openness to the tone on that thing that none of the others had. All were good sounding pups, but I heard that, and the heavens opened up, and the angels sang to me. To my ears, the Sanfords were the closest to that. There was a constriction to the tone (especially in the lower mids) on most of the others. Anyway, great demos guys, I'll be back! Oh, BTW, The TV Yellow was beautiful, but that Red '95 really spoke to me!

Hey Guys I have a suggestion, Epiphone Les Paul Special 1 with P-90's from Musicians Friend ,(I'm serious) I think you will be really surprised at just how good these are ! Great show bye the way ! Glad you are back ! :-)
The Melody Maker's had the short magnets placed vertical so the magnet field is very narrow vs a P-90 which has two magnets placed horizontally. The wider magnetic field "see's" more string vibrations= bigger sound.
Just love this show and I just love my P90s. I have an Epiphone Casino Coupe (smaller than the Casino). I had the pickups rebuilt by Craig Vineham from Newfoundland, Canada. Original pups were 12.1k/11.6k A5s. New ones are 8.3K/7.6k A4s. Night and Day. Night and Day. This guy's prices are crazy good - then you realize the prices are in Canadian - even better. Also have Fender Jaguar Blackout HH - have a set of Tone Emporium HB size P90s that are going in - don't if these guys build them though. Prices are great, and in Cdn funds too.

Guitar solo in Jethro Tull Aqualung, Leslie West with Mountain, Pete Townshend "Live At Leeds" and i believe Santana Live at Woodstock all used p90 equipped Gibsons.
I always thought that Aqualung solo had some bite. Very cool :).

I had that same 1963 Melody Maker double cut. I bought it in 1998 - 99 for about $600. I sold it to some dude in England somewhere in the early 2k's. I remember he sent me cash USD AND in sequential bills that smelled like they were hot off the press and crispy. Customs had opened the mailer, but not one dollar was missing. It was a fun guitar, but it was a righty and I'm a lefty. I think I even had the el-cheapo case too.
I think the old 1956 pickups sound better than the new fancy handmade ones. They didn’t worry about the same stuff modern people do. They just put pickups in the guitar, and the special was a student model. Interesting points you all make. I’ve never bothered to measure the resistance of any pickups in any of my guitars, going back to my first cheap Japanese tiescos in 1964. I always manage to get my favorite tones out of almost all my guitars. Not always, but most of the time.

Thanks for another great show! At 27:49 you mentioned that you said you could feel that it was underwound and I am assuming it had less volume. Were you able to adjust the screws in the pickup closer to the strings to gain more volume?
I think the Throbaks were the best of the bunch; even better than the vintage ones. They were more dynamic, had better clarity and were more musical.
love your show guys, but could I offer a suggestion: could you do a bit of post-production to the spoken audio, raise the db to match the guitar playing volume. constantly having to adjust the volume gets old fast! love your work, best regards to you both
Throback neck sounds killer
That melody maker sounds pretty great imo.
Depends on what you are looking for in sound. P90's have a "greasy" sound, but you guys demonstrated variations on that kind of tone. "Greasy" is good, if that is what you are looking for. The '56 Les Paul Special had the mojo for me. Maybe it wasn't as clear or as hot as the others, but it gave the kind of distortion that gave me the "Oh wow" moment.

I am unable to find any listing for P90’s on the organic pickups website. I suppose they’ve stopped making them.
I really liked the Organics and Reilanders. If I were in the market for a set I'd get an Organic neck and a Reilander bridge.
I've got an early '70s Gibson weirdo, the SG-250. Made for a year or so. Melody Maker pickups, thickish SG shaped body. The pickups are killer!

The Organics were really nice! Not too harsh, but still focussed and have bite, plus nice overall tone.

Those Onamacs sound fantastic to me in that guitar. They've got the bark and growl that I love in P90s. The Organics sounded really good, too; nice clarity, but they could benefit from a little more output. The ThroBaks surprised with their brittleness, while the Reilanders sound great, but are a little too "gritty" for my tastes. They're all good, and as always, it boils down to taste, playing style, amps, speakers.
Speaking of Melody Makers, I've got a 62 with original pickups. Noisy and anemic isn't the best combination, but that's exactly what it is. Just like your example, the pickups aren't loud enough to rise much above the hum floor. When I got it, someone had mounted a second magnet on the bridge pickup to boost its output. It definitely made it louder, but not really better.

Another awesome shootout video guys! Any chance you could do a Firebird pickup shootout sometime? Lots of Mini Humbuckers out there but, I heard Vintage Firebird pickup coils are wrapped over the top like Lipsticks. Love to get some clarity on that. Cheers
Seth Lover was quoted as saying he was trying to copy the tone of the P-90 when he created the Gibson humbucker. That’s why especially the early ‘57 PAF’s sound more like a P-90.
Another great show. I'm playing a LP Junior and loving it. I wouldn't trade the P90 for a humbucker ever. I love it.
On another off topic, where can I get the hats you both are wearing? I recently had surgery and need to wear hats.
Besides the ‘56 p-90s, which are clearly the best, the Thro-bak sounded pretty good. A bit of microphony is a must for me on a good p-90 to pick up that extra sizzle.

Could you do a demo/shootout of guitars with the Kay Gold Kay (also known as "Kleenex Box") pickups? They are constructed somewhat like P-90s, but sound totally different -- but interesting. By comparison they sound dry, kind of spiky, and lack the middy roundness some P-90s have. Fairly high output.
Barney Kessel had a signature deal with Kay for a couple of years, with Kleenex box pickups in the models he endorsed. He was quoted as saying, "Those were awful guitars" or something similar.
Just a thought.

Pat is shy, and possibly has RSD (repetitive stress disorder), like me...? But I play again thanks to holistic medicine, quitting hard drugs and alcohol (medicinal cannabis excepted), and slide... John Lee Hooker had to quit playing because of "Old Uncle Arthur" (Arthritis), but he never learned to play slide, because his cousin, Earl Hooker, was too good already - couldn't play like him. I can't play like Earl Hooker either, in face I probably sound like crap, but I keep the volume down, and play for my own enjoyment. Pat may be like me.....?
Hi guys, I know you tend to like things fairly traditional but would you consider reviewing the Eastman SB55Dc/v with the single Lollar P90
I think they made the necks thicker on the newer Gibson USA models. More in line with the Custom Shop necks on the specials.
How about adding contemporary Gibson p-90's to the mix? Hardly surprising that the 56 sounded amazing, but what about a brand new Les Paul Special? IMHO, boutique pickups are a psychological advantage over stock more than anything real, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise. Great show as always.

FWIW, I'm going with Wolfetone "mean" and "meaner" for my used Epiphone Casino Coupe (2014), in natural, with dark rosewood 'board. It was the first year in 2014, so they probably wanted to get a good rep going-on? The neck isn't my favorite, but totally playable - I think it's good for your hand to play on different size necks, to avoid RSS (repetitive stress syndrome). As for my Casino Coupe: I may go with the Wolfetone bridge humbucker in a P-90 "dog ear" mount, laser cut perfectly. I like the idea of having a humbucker in the bridge position, and awaiting Wolfe's response about his opinion on the matter. A "mean" and "meaner" are what many recommend for the Casino Coupe, but the bridge humbucker option, which is really a MINI-humbucker considering the spacing, might be the way to go. I assume a firebird pickup would fit in their too, like Neil Young - eh"? No, not for me...I'm old, don't like distortion as much anymore, prefer clean, beautiful sounds now. Sue me!
I noticed you giving advice to the companies. Here's a little advice for you. It would be very nice if you would tell prices for the U. S. for different pickups and other gear. Of coarse I'm sure you get them free. Thanks. The organic sounded the best but, too expensive if it was 93 dollars a piece.

According to George Gruhn, Walter Fuller designed the P-90 in 1946.
The Organics sound incredibly shrill to me. They don't seem to have any P-90 qualities to them.

I am surprised you haven't tried the Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90, It really is a grade above the rest that I have tried.
I got turned off to the SD antiquity p90 when playing 2 1956 ES295s , one with original pickups and the other with antiquity pickups. The SD sounded ok until I played the original and then they sounded cold and flat in comparison, it was drastic.

Looks like a cold climate version of the "nothing to see under here" hat. Down south they keep the sun of the exposed skin.
Damned this KZ90 Throbak set does not exist in his catalogue. I think it is a Custom set... the neck sounds less dark than his std 55-56 set alnico 2 neck, and it’s a good thing. So Jon, you have to do something with this alnico 2 neck that is too dark, and i think it will also be a great thing to have a 60s inspired set with alnico 5...😊

Man. Something about the TV yellow special just calls to me. Maybe it's because I saw it in a guitar history book when I first started playing guitar at 13, and then I saw Dean DeLeo of STP playing the snot out of one on three different records and multiple music videos. It just looks like a classic car, and screams Rock and roll to me.
Both the"real" P90 and real PAF bobbins are the same height. .025" winding area.

What do you mean about underwound pus just raise them up? Your missing it. Just turn your amp up, Golden era les pauls with underwound Pus sound the best because they are underwound and have also have lost magnetism.. Thats the trick . Duane Allmans Pus are under wound. Just turn the amp up. That and the wiring harness is the trick. Your volume does not depend on the DC of your stupid Pus.To keep clarity, have low wound Pus, and a great harness, great caps, and great pots.. Everything else depends on how loud you turn up your amp. That old bullshit about having a JB in the bridge, and vintage in your neck is the biggest joke of all time.
Agree on the underwinding. I've a couple of Yamaha SGs that I've had since the '80s. Both have underwound p/ups, by PAF standards, AND in both cases the lower 'DC' is in the bridge - one of them really nails 'that' Peter Green sound without any modifications. That said, the magnet stuff... there's no pattern to it. I've a Strat that'll be 40yo next week. The magnet poles in those are still at the maximum charge possible for their dimensions. The Yamahas, as well, while I don't know what they started at, they are still double the typical reading for a 'vintage spec' PAF replica pickup. All AlNiCo V pickups.
Whilst I agree that an aged/degaussed magnet usually sounds better, they don't weaken naturally with age, though they can be affected by climatic conditions over time.
