  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14 convertible Ultrabook. This is an interesting 2-in-1 with the same design as the original ThinkPad Yoga, but it has a larger 14” full HD display and switchable NVIDIA GT 840M 2 GB graphics. The Yoga 14 has the Lift and Lock keyboard that locks the keys down when in tablet and presentation modes, and it’s the usual excellent ThinkPad keyboard with backlit, tactile keys that have good travel. The laptop runs on a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-4210U CPU with 8 gigs of RAM, a 16 gig caching solid state drive and a 1 TB hard drive. It has a very good 1920 x 1080 IPS display that has 10 points of multitouch (but there’s no pen option as with the 12.5” original ThinkPad Yoga). The 4.2 lb. (1.9 kg) Yoga 14 has dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, 3 USB ports, HDMI and an SD card slot. It’s available direct from Lenovo or via Best Buy for $1,099.

    Thanks for your intelligent and thorough reviews, Lisa. I actually bought this ultrabook largely because of your review. I ended up returning it largely because it had major WIFI connectivity issues. I was really liking it if it weren't for that.
    I also had minor problems with glitchy startup (weird, loud beeps, and indefinite "Lenovo" screen). I noticed the touch screen was a bit glitchy, too. I got spooked and ended up returning it.

    Thanks for the great review. I bought this ThinkPad and have no regrets. It does exactly what it was designed to do and does it well. I have owned 9 laptops so far, from 11.6" screen to even an 18" screen and this ThinkPad is a perfect size to carry and use.

    The TPY 12.5 is near perfect laptop in many ways. This just takes it to the next level. The planets must have aligned or something because this laptop (assuming there's not defects like the major ghosting problem in the 12.5 TPY) is exactly everything I need as a computer science student and a light gamer.

    Amazing Review. Dag this lady does a great job.
    My dings with this laptop are that the USB ports are strange. I lose my wifi if I plug a memory stick into the right side USB. Looking at the pics with the cover off, I am guessing that this is due to interference as the WIFI module is on the right (also the USB stick gets hot if plugged in on the right). Left side works fine.

    Great review as always.
    Not sure about Onelink dock compatibility. On Lenovo's website, both the original (USB) and Pro dock (USB, Ethernet, Video) are listed as choices but it states that the original dock is only for the X1. Can you verify that the the Pro version works? Looks like the same connector as on the X1 Carbon 2. Went to Best Buy to check out the Yoga 14 and the Best Buy "genius" said "What is Onelink? Strange looking power connector".
    Chatting with Lenovo was useless as usual.
    Also, if you purchase from Lenovo, you can choose one year of next day, on-site, support for $19. My past experience with Lenovo is that you will be able to purchase 2, 3, or 4 year next business day support plans with or without drop protection after registration at a significant discount from the advertised prices.
    I was planning to purchase a T440s for business travel, but ordered the Yoga 14 instead,
    How about a smackdown between the T440s and Yoga 14?

    Is the OS located in the SSD cache? I was thinking about adding the 512 GB ssd that I already have, but it has WIndows 8.1 in it. If I directly install the SSD, with all my files and Windows OS, onto the laptop, will it cause any issues with booting and the computer's performance--because the manufacturer's softwares is not in my SSD?

    This was a very informative video, but I have a question. My major is accounting, and I enjoy editing videos for fun. I use my laptop everyday and it is my workhorse. My budget is $1800 max. What would you suggest? I am looking for a speed machine that is consistent and reliable. I was looking at this laptop for 799$ at best buy with $300 geek squad protection for 3 years, and upgrading to 500 ssd memory. What do you think? Also should I look into getting a laptop that can upgrade to 16gb of ram and has i7?

    1080p touchscreen? Yoga form factor? 840M? Great color gamut? ThinkPad build quality? Sounds awesome for digital art! Wait, what? No digitizer? WTF Lenovo?! What's the point of making this a tablet, then?

    • @asdfrozen
      @asdfrozen 9 років тому +4

      Soccercrazyigboman Eh, I feel like at that point you're better off with a T440p or something. The Yoga 14 is way too heavy to use as a casual tablet, so without pen input the "tablet feature" kinda goes to waste.

      Tent Mode for presentation and Touch is faster than mouse. Fact. I definitely don't think this is going to shake up anything....yes it is kinda useless instead of just making a slimmer TPY but eh, I can see people using this thing for sure especially engineers.

    • @asdfrozen
      @asdfrozen 9 років тому

      Soccercrazyigboman Eh, if you're typing, the TrackPoint is a lot faster. I think if you're an engineer, something like the T440p, T540p, W540, or MacBook Pro would work better.

    Thank you for another terrific review Lisa. I went out and bought one and absolutely love it. I know the Yoga 3 14" and 15" models are supposed to be launched next month but we will see if they are any better.
    Here are my first impressions of this product:
    Lenovo Yoga 14 laptop first impressions: Sturdy build, fast system even with a 1TB physical 5400 RPM drive. It uses a 16gb SSD drive for caching. Keyboard is great with a good tactile feel. Only keyboard that comes close to this one is the Macbook series. Screen is bright enough at 300 nits but would be hard to see in the sunlight. Sound is very loud but tinny (as expected with a laptop). Screen is beautiful and clear. Viewing angles are excellent with no wash out by looking from sides or different angle. Bestbuy.com has on sale right now for $999 and it comes with an i5, 1TB HD, 8GB RAM and 14"IPS 1080p Screen.

    Hello Lisa,
    thank you for this very good review. I have a few questions that I would appreciate if you could help me with. I want to buy this pc with the i7, 8GB RAM, GeForce, 512 SSD configurations. I am concerned with how long the 8GB RAM will be sustainable in the future; with the release of Windows 10 and software getting heavier as years go by.
    1) What is your opinion about it? My use is mainly ordinary everyday stuff with the occasional Illustrator and Photoshop to create scientific graphs and illustrations.
    2) Ordering the laptop with a spinning drive and putting a SSD myself will give me this extra 'micro hard drive'. Will this make any considerable improvements in "RAM" memory usage, or am I talking b******t?
    Lenovo also had a 15.6'' version upgradable up to 16GB RAM, but I was concerned about the bulky size and Lenovo doesn't produce it anymore. I'm sorry for the long-winded question, your answer would clarify a lot of things!
    Thank you!

      I believe they will be rolling out a model with the pen a little later. When they released the first Thinkpad Yoga it also didn't have a digitizer pen - that option came out a month or two later..

    was the reason of no wacom that people prefer it on their phone note3,4, or android tablet like note 10.1 and 12.2 provided u can still get a keyboard for those plus u can get a cheap vivotab note 8 if u want windows and onenote on it instead of having it on a large laptop/ultrabook/convertible. what about the surface pro 3 then?

    I am sure there will be an option to customize this unit at some time with those options, if not this is a FAIL in my opinion, why not have an option for the digitizer pen and some more security options?

    The Engadget review says this works with the Wacom digitizer pens. You are saying different - can you please confirm which one is true? That will be my major decision factor to decide whether I keep this laptop or return it to BestBuy.

      I doubt it, Wacom has never made a screen bigger than 12.5" for competitors...competitors because they want you to buy their own line of drawing tablets that have bigger screens.

    I have the original thinkpad yoga and I have installed an m.2 128GB SSD with a 2TB Samsung spinning hard drive to have the best of both world. Honestly, the m.2 SSD is a bit slow compare to other 2.5" SSD, but it's a compromise I'm willing to trade.

    Not having a wacom pen support is a bit of a deal killer for me in what would be a perfect laptop :(
