Upgrading is straight forward and not a complex process for most techies. I was not aware of the power supply variations.
i got this laptop for my dad actually! specifically the model with a i5 vpro cpu and 16 gigs ram. it cost me $230 without storage from ebay and i had to add a 512 gig nvme drive for $40, bringing totals up to $270. from my experience the non-s model (t480) tends to have better specs for cheaper (the one i use for linux came with QHD, i7 vpro, 16/256 gigs included and an mx150 for just $215), but a non-enthusiast will probably take the thin-and-light factor any day over this negligible spec bump. the half-soldered ram is a little worrisome for me (still mad about letting myself get a laptop with 8 gigs soldered ram a few years back), but at least it's still somewhat upgradable and it's hard to argue with the price.

The *70 generation is the last "old Thinkpad" format, because they still had the batterybridge with dual battery systems. Why they do not re-introduce this again baffles me. The level of battery capacity and usage they can cram into the devices today would be crazy, even though running a x86 architecture. I am convinced, that Framework is the future market segment, that the Thinkpad used to represent. Just wait until the second hand market will be flooded in a couple of years with Framework devices for low price.

Had this laptop for around 7 months and finally am letting it go. It’s great for the price but the speakers are absolute horrid. Worst sounding things I have ever heard and most phone speakers are better. My Moto G from 2015 had better speakers. Sure the laptop may be upgradable but no aftermarket speaker upgrades exist. Display is also pretty bad. I got the 1080p version. I can’t imagine any one in their right mind would be happy paying this at full price at $1300. Ended up going with the Lenovo Slim 7 Pro as an upgrade.
Great machine, have this one for coding, absolutely love keyboard and weight. If you are going to upgrade trackpad, try going with a glass one, heard it is possible
@@SOCyak Yeah, it is good enough in terms of value per price. The only complaint is screen brightness (250 nit), but it is not a problem if you use it indoors + the screen is upgradable. As long as you won't do any hard CPU tasks or gaming (which you probably won't as SOC analyst), this machine is perfect. I also recommend upgrading to minimum of 16Gb RAM.
I have a T480 standard, on which I use VoidLinux with musl and dabble with HardenedBSD. It's got the lowest power consumption of any laptop I have. The trackpad is terrifying coming from a Fujitsu Q702. I use the trackpoint buttons in conjunction with it. I intend to BIOS unlock it, then install a cell modem, and of all things, replace my main cellphone with it because I hate Android actually.
it’s a nice laptop but i hate how the palm rest and the keyboard’s finish rubs off and it looks so greasy even though it’s not. if i try using methods online to get rid of it like a magic eraser and other stuff, it all leads to no avail.

There is one video on YT however it isn't that accurate.
Nice review. Thanks question please. 1. Is the brightness & sharpness good on this 1080p touch display? 2. can we disable the touchscreen to improve battery life? Will disbaling touchsreen improve battery life? Thanks
Dumb question. I am looking for an LCD cable from a T480s for the IPS display (30 pin). Anyone got one or know of a similar laptop whose LCD cable would also work?
i have the t480s but i feel that its really slow laptop, the hardware is amazing, but even simple tasks like watch youtube videos are slow, maybe is a drivers problem
im torn between this t480s and p50 and im wondering which cpu's can handle heavy task better on 2023 because the p50 is much older than the t480s please advice!thanks!
Don't buy Dell they're crap. They will slwoly fall apart over time and start bugging out. I 've owned two Dell's, and both times they just fell paaprt after about 4 years. My 12 year old ThinkPad x230 on the other hand is still working flawless!
The T480 honestly I think is the better of the 2 if you want to get best bang for your buck by buying a cheap used one and add 64GB of ram and you have two SSD slots to fill up. The screen can be upgraded to 4k as well, wifi can be upgraded to wifi6E. The T480s is sexier because it's thinner but that's about it. I think you can upgrade the wifi card and add more storage but the one thing that impacts performance the most, you cant upgrade which is the ram. You really cant take a t480s far from its original performance. In either case I'm sure the t480s is still nice but the T480 is the one you want if you like to tinker.
There is no difference with your 64gb in T480 vs 40gb in T480s. Are you using all of them? If yes, you should rather buy some workstation. These are laptops for work and such ram is enough for 99,9% cases. T480s have PCIE 4, T480 have PCIE2 so this have much bigger impact than RAM
i own this laptop as well, with the stock 250 nits fullhd display . its just sad (colors, brightness). The only big issue with this laptop is the speakers. they are just more than awful XD. expecially theit placement on the bottom... just bought a 400 nit low power full hd panel from taobao for 320 yuan N140HCG-GQ2. i think with this panel it will be just an amazing laptpop for less than 300 dollars
Its amazing - I just bought myself one - but compared to 2014 macbook air the built in speakers are TERRIBLE. Have that in mind if you like to watch a lot of videos from youtube or twitch for example. Also, Its pretty difficult to navigate using the keyboard after years of macbook use but thats just my personal case.
If you want to play intensive games, get a quad core or gaming laptop. You can push the dual core cpu to the limit but you won’t find it as good as you would with a more powerful laptop. Light games should be good to go.
Anyone know where I can buy the t480s backlight keyboard? Lenovo site don't have it. Also I never had any issues using windows 11 Pro. What i did is a clean install of win 11 Pro. I didn't upgrade from previous win 10 Pro.
That L series are just a step lower than T series. They are maybe less premium in terms of finish, weight and so on but are priced lower and many times packs better value for the money. Sometimes even you can upgrade one further than T series (which tends to be lighter so less ports and space inside), the L and probably E series can accommodate i.e. 2nd internal drive using SATA. Of course it depends on the generation, 480 was the last great Thinkpads. Although T14 is not bad either, soldered ram is a bit pita but I put 32GB into mine and it's 48GB RAM now. And there are days where I see 80-90% of memory used! :) Photo/video editing soft, many tabs in browser, virtualisation, even file explorer eats a lot of ram during opening a folders with photos on my mobile and on SSD and sorting that, please mind we are talking ~15000 files :)
I love my T480, my only gripe is with the trackpad. It feels too rough and I find myself right clicking a lot, like the edge for the right and left click are too close together
I would just get the latest Thinkpad T14 G3 with 32GB of RAM. You get the latest CPU and future proof the RAM at 32GB. You can also adjust/replace the SSD.

8th gen i5 and i7 ARE 4 core/8 thread CPUs, and are performing very well. This is a Kaby R revision,
Had this laptop for around 7 months and finally am letting it go.
What would you recommend
T480s or dell 7490
Great machine, have this one for coding, absolutely love keyboard and weight. If you are going to upgrade trackpad, try going with a glass one, heard it is possible
I’m a cybersecurity student studying SOC Analysis. Do you think this machine would be good enough for my studies?
@@SOCyak Yeah, it is good enough in terms of value per price. The only complaint is screen brightness (250 nit), but it is not a problem if you use it indoors + the screen is upgradable. As long as you won't do any hard CPU tasks or gaming (which you probably won't as SOC analyst), this machine is perfect. I also recommend upgrading to minimum of 16Gb RAM.
Worth buying in 2022? Hell, I just bought one and it's 2024. Been using a t430s for years with no complaints
Thanks for the review! FR
it’s a nice laptop but i hate how the palm rest and the keyboard’s finish rubs off and it looks so greasy even though it’s not. if i try using methods online to get rid of it like a magic eraser and other stuff, it all leads to no avail.
I have the same laptop for mobility, and a legion 7 for heavy workload. I tend to use the T480s much more. Lovely machine and amazing keyboard.
Is this laptop good for programming?
@@Ashborn4680 I believe so. I use it to run virtual machines (3 max with 16gb of ram). I have linux installed, and it runs very smooth. Not sure if this helps you figure out if it is good for coding…
@@lbenegas This is exactly the comment I was looking for! Thanks! Any issues when running the vms?
@@eurobean Zero issues. I used VirtualBox and VMware. Both work flawlessly.
Excellent and balanced overview.
I found a T480 with 8GB RAM/256 GB SSD for $269. 1080p screen. Base keyboard. It's a great daily carry.
However, no internal battery. I can order a replacement and I got a monster 72 WH battery.
I can upgrade the SSD and RAM. So I still spend much less than a new laptop.
That sounds very expensive
@@auraevoe2036 Yup. Bro thought it was a good deal
@@auraevoe2036 T480 with i7 32gb and mx150 + N140HCG-GQ2 screen is 400$+ in this moment. I am 50/50 to buy it..
Where do i get the wallpaper ?
Which one you recommend and Which one have the best screen
Thinkpad T480 or Latitude 7390
Both are i7 8th gen
any used thinkpad that has had some upgrading done to it beats out any budget new gaming laptop (especially in ram-intensive operation)
Would it be okay for Adobe apps like after effect?
i have an oppurtunity to get one for 180us should i do it
still going strong with my t450 + extended bulky primary battery
and probably gonna go all out for a better and brand new thinkpad , the keyboard+ the signature right and left button on the mousepad is super useful
first time using it and immediately fell in love with the keyboard
I have one of these (I've owned the T420s and T450s) as you say it is an excellent laptop. Bought from eBay for £660 2.5 years ago. If I am being picky I could add secondary SSD to the T420s and T450s but I've not found a definitive video showing how this is done with the T480s. There is one video on YT however it isn't that accurate.
reddit should have info, I believe you can put a 2242 m.2 NVME SSD in the WWAN slot on many thinkpads of this era, including this one
How is the battery life of this laptop?
What do You think about the screen in comparison to MacBook ? I’ve Heard that Colors are not impressive…
What is Your opinion?
Dose it work well with Kali Linux or Linux
I am about to buy a Lenovo
.. help me chose between T470s with 20gb ram and t480s 8 gb ram ... Which one should i buy
Nice review. Thanks question please. 1. Is the brightness & sharpness good on this 1080p touch display? 2. can we disable the touchscreen to improve battery life? Will disbaling touchsreen improve battery life? Thanks
Your last Thinkpad video and this one is really convincing me to get one
what gnu/linux do you use on your thinkpads? what do you recommend for my t480? on my desktop I use opensuse tumbleweed with gnome
It must be something wrong with your laptop. This laptop not only play UA-cam video, but should be enough to edit and render FHD videos
How does it run if I play Halo CE or CoD MW4 2007?
Great Video! I love it
Do you think i might be able to run some low end games for example Minecraft or Roblox?
im torn between this t480s and p50 and im wondering which cpu's can handle heavy task better on 2023 because the p50 is much older than the t480s please advice!thanks!
So which model of the t480s would you recommend maybe timo run some basic games
None really. But if you must, get an i7 model
thinkpad T480s or Dell latitude 7390? which is better at performance?
T480s. I currently use one. It is fast enough
Don't buy Dell they're crap. They will slwoly fall apart over time and start bugging out. I 've owned two Dell's, and both times they just fell paaprt after about 4 years. My 12 year old ThinkPad x230 on the other hand is still working flawless!
what is the thinkpad model from same year but with 15,6'' screen? Is it good as this?
@@LukMatx There are other things that are not upgradable in the S
Also is it true what he said about getting 4k screen
i own this laptop as well, with the stock 250 nits fullhd display . its just sad (colors, brightness).
How did the new display work out?
Nice video 👍🏻, where do I get the wallpaper?
Battery life?
Its amazing - I just bought myself one - but compared to 2014 macbook air the built in speakers are TERRIBLE. Have that in mind if you like to watch a lot of videos from youtube or twitch for example. Also, Its pretty difficult to navigate using the keyboard after years of macbook use but thats just my personal case.
Is there any way to upgrade the sound system?
@@ericnwachukwu no
Question, would this be good for music programs like cakewalk or audacity and video editing programs like videopad
for 1080p editing, it would be okay
I just got a T480 second hand one for CAD360.
Hows it?
CPU temperature is around 73-80 ces us degree. I don’t know if it is normal or not.
Hp elitebook 840 G5 i7/8th gen Vs ThinkPad Lenovo t480 , which one is better??? Although both have same 16/512 SSD

Can you share your wallpaper?
That’s why schools love this machine
Best machine I've ever used.
Hi, great review. consider using this machine. can we play Football Manager in this thing?
If you want to play intensive games, get a quad core or gaming laptop. You can push the dual core cpu to the limit but you won’t find it as good as you would with a more powerful laptop. Light games should be good to go.
Thanks, mate.
Anyone know where I can buy the t480s backlight keyboard? Lenovo site don't have it. Also I never had any issues using windows 11 Pro. What i did is a clean install of win 11 Pro. I didn't upgrade from previous win 10 Pro.
EBay
valorant works at 120fps at 900p fortniter gets 60 at 720p its a solid machine and i wish it wont die on me cuz i dont wanto ever upgrade from this
That's cool. Can I use it for Adobe suite then?
Its a pitty the t480s has only one sodimm socket and soldered ram. Thankfully for most tasks single channel ram is more than adequate
I bought a X1 Carbon Gen 6, which is the Carbon equivalent to the T480s.
Slower and Less RAM comapred to thge T480s
What do you think about L480? I bought one now with i5 8250u, 8gb ram, fhd screen for 140€. Is it much worse than t480? :)
Didnt expect the faze jersey ngl
Every Windows user has run into issues... whether they're aware of those issues is another story.
I love my T480, my only gripe is with the trackpad. It feels too rough and I find myself right clicking a lot, like the edge for the right and left click are too close together
Ty for the video. Follow your channel 😎
I came here for the laptop but wow nice jersey its like just so cool
I bought the L480
I would just get the latest Thinkpad T14 G3 with 32GB of RAM. You get the latest CPU and future proof the RAM at 32GB. You can also adjust/replace the SSD.
It's for the price range otherwise just get the latest thing.
If you're willing to spend around $2,396, yeah.
If we all had sufficient money to spare at any point in time, we would be going for the latest and newest of anything. 🤷♂️
I think I wanna buy this soon
Trusted you the second I saw stardew valley in your steam library😂
T480 can actually go up to 64gb and T480s can go up to 40gb ram.
@@jpdseara That's only on the official documents. When Lenovo created those documents they didn't have 32gb ram sticks at the time. I and many others have tested 32gb ram sticks in the open slot for T480s and found it working

I think the E14 Ryzen is the way to go now.
Price difference, I guess.
@@ekeretteekpo3004 Prices are fairly close on the used market. The E14 is faster, newer, and comparably upgradeable.

My lenovo ideapad flex 5 motherboard crashed after 15 months. Warranty expired after 12 months. I will never ever buy a lenovo laptop or any device ever again. Pure rubbish. Shit.
That's an ideapad not a thinkpad. Thinkpad models are far superior.
I would stick to Lenovo Thinkpads, HP Zbooks or Dell Precision. You want a rugged laptop and these can be had for a reasonable cost.
The problem with used T480s is the Usb-c charging port. It doesn't last and once it wears out it puts power through a data pin and fries the motherboard.
this wallpaper is awesome can you share me

since you asked your shirt is not cool at all......now if it was a hockey jersey then it would be cool.....but its only soccer. Even rugby is cooler then soccer
