- For this video, a friend named Dave (Ironic I know) was kind enough to let me drive his first generation MazdaSpeed3 so I could get a good comparison between the old one and the new one I have previously reviewed. I can't get over how good looking of a hatch the first gen mazda3s were
unmusedtails so much better than the mk2
I agree just bought mine a couple days ago and I love it! Definitely a much more beautiful car compared to the gen2
The little things on the exterior really accentuate the Mazdaspeed 3's swagger, compared to the base model.

I'm glad that though you're much larger now and more popular you still review cars that aren't insane and not exclusively high horsepower or expensive cars

Hey, you should definitely do a review on a Mazda Rx8, or an Infiniti G37!
Once you own one... nothing compares... It's not just the power, there is a fun factor to the 07-09 speed3's. They are incredibly fun to drive.

After selling my '12 WRX I picked up a '09 MS3 and I actually have a lot more fun with this car. Love it.

Another great review David! I've never driven the first gen, but after watching this video I'm pretty sure I'd like it a lot better than the second gen that I wasn't crazy about. Those launches at the end were sweet haha! Love the editing too as always! Keep up the great work man!

TheSpottedLion ST! I own one and have been in and working on a few 1st an 2nd ten Speeds, the Focus is an all around nicer, more balanced vehicle. I love mine to death!
its an very old commebt but im pretty sure you didnt turn of tracrion control when you floored the speed3.
Best automotive choice I've ever made, such a great car. It's a reliable daily driver that smokes 90% of other cars. Such a wolf in sheep's clothing.

NAE 1k depends. How experienced are you with car repair? Are you a fast driver or a normal driver. Do you like to go fast all the time or every once in a while? How well can you drive a manual, as these ONLY come with a 6 speed manual.

Buddy owns one of these, I have NEVER felt a car pull in 6th gear like this one can. Didn't understand why until I saw the torque numbers, then it made sense. Also these things are the definition of sleepers!!
torque is a big part... but short gears is also contributing to the intensity of acceleration.

I always like the Mazdaspeed 3 but I really think it needs to be all wheel drive to compete with the focus golf and wrx

The problem is that would jack the price up. The real selling point of the MS3 is the relatively low price, with a stupid amount of turbocharged power, and a decent interior and exterior.

I watched this review in December 2018, at the time was looking at one. Ended up buying it, here we are 9 months later and I love it. Most fun car I've owned.

for a super oversimplified version, cars need 3 things to go zoom zoom, gas, oxygen/air, and source of ignition.
turbos are a way to use exaust waste gas to spool up a fan. this fan in return draws fresh air into the turbo, the turbo dumps the air into the engine and now there can be a greater amount of combustion thus more power... thats my basic understanding and while no expert i hope i helped

bought my 2008 mazdaspeed 3 about month ago and I love it! I put on a Corksport turbo back exaust, blowoff value, and intake. this car is fast and so much fun to drive as my daily. cause of the torque I can cruise in 3rd or 4th gear very easy so I can eat and drive to school without issues ha.
I enjoy watching your video reviews and vlogs Brah! I especially like this one because I honestly didn't know what to think about Mazda speed, reliability, etc. Also, I'm glad you filmed this one in Chesapeake, Awesome! Keep the great videos coming!

I have always alive the Speed 3's. I finally was able to buy one in 2013 (red) the last year they made them. I love the maniacal smile of the 2nd Gen I like the muscular look. My car is stock just passed 45k miles. I used it daily for work 30-50 miles with no issues. Just a few of tires. I my get an Access tune now that my warranty is up. But I don't want to ruin my car I love it. It's truly a Hot Hatch. I was debating trading it for a 2016 WRX but I love the hatch body. Great video.

I have a 1st gen 2008 Mazda 3 Kintaro(sport-ish german edition), it is diesel, 150hp and I still have fun with it. I can only imagine how awesome a MazdaSpeed3 is and I really hope I'll get to drive one some day(1st gen).

I love my Mazdaspeed 3. Only thing I want that it doesn't have is a sunroof.
How is it on corners? Im looking to get one and i want to know how it does around corning? Im wanna push it around those corners nice and good and have a fun time!! Also looking to mod it :)

It corners really well, basically no body roll. A few mods like a fuel pump and intake will get you 300+ horsepower fast. There are several good Mazda forums, here is one with some performance suggestions: www.mazda3forums.com/showthread.php?t=324152

That will get you some great HP gains. Mine is bone stock but I still love it 7 years later. Plenty of power to get me in trouble if I so choose.

I had a speed 3 over here in the U.K. where it's known as a Mazda 3 MPS.
I had mine running a Corksport SRI+TIP, Corksport down pipe, custom secondary cat delete and catback, Turbosmart BPV, ETS Top mount and a custom tune via a COBB AP V3. Running around 315whp and 345ft/lb on the stock k04 turbo.
Yes the torque steer is crazy but on a roll it murdered many things, my kill list was funny.
just drove an 07 speed and i loved every second of it. coming from a 3 owner.

I am absolutely in love with my 1st gen ms3. Plenty quick, amazing to drive and the interior doesn't make you feel like you're in a 10 year old Japanese hatchback

I love my speed 3. Just recently put a new motor, CorkSport turbo, hpfp, ap, freektune, rear motor mount, short shift link, Cobb shift knob, and I think it’s lowered (from previous owner).

Own a 2009 and wouldnt trade it for ANYTHING. Absolutely lovely and the only thing you will want to do the VVT upgrade around 100k miles (or sooner if you hear a rattle on startup left side of engine). Lowered mine, new cold air intake, and also did the rear motor mount replacement. It's just a raw and fun car on every level, now. I cannot stress this enough...BUY ONE IF YOU CAN!

I got myself a 07 a few months back as my second car, but first with a manual transmission....so my gears suffered and I only just now got the hang of getting the thing to move quickly. Still more fun then driving auto 😁
crazy how it's spinning even through most of second gear. what a monster of an engine, stock clutch must be pretty tough.

I got stationed overseas and now I need a car. I own a 2013 gti that makes 450whp and is just an absolute sleeper but I didn’t want to get it shipped over here because it’s rust like crazy. So now I’m on the hunt for another car and for some reason hatchbacks hit me in just the right spot so I’m on my way to pick one of these up. Gotta love it.
drove from SD to Seattle in my 08 speed3, bone stock. It really was nice, mainly due to the insanely comfortable seats =)

Nice review. I owned a 2007 Speed 3 it was for lack of a better description it was very lemon like (8 trips to the dealer in a year). I am a mechanic by trade but was happy it was under warranty. I now have 2009 Speed 3 grand touring and had some suspension repairs done under warranty bur nothing else so far. It is a fun car. I owned an 81 626 and a 92 Escort GT(really a Mazda) that got to 282 K miles until the body rotted out. I love Mazda's focus on making fun cars not appliances.
ahh one of my brothers good friends use to have a 3 (not a speed) but we had fun in that car lol. especially when I was younger it felt badass riding around it. guess this review just reminded me of it
08 ms3 owner here. I love this car. Can't ever see myself driving another car(unless it's another speed3, which is in the works) I did my first engine swap in this car after I flipped avoiding a car. Now I have 2 engines and can swap in 3 days 😈
I bought mine with 101,xxx miles and now it has 144,xxx miles. Since i got it all ive done to it was coil overs, oil changes at 3000k miles, new sparkplugs, coilovers, sway bar links front/back, driver side axle, vvt upgrade, rmm damond motorsports, Cobb Accessport.
All these optional changes i did.
The only thing that has failed me yet was the MAF which i replaced already and shes running good as new

You should do a review on a Cobalt SS Tc. I feel like those cars are super spelt on. Arguably one of the fastest front wheel drive cars

Back in my high school days the intake/exhaust/tune MS3 at our school would walk bolt on S197s. It surprised a LOT of people there, since the hatchback look is pretty disarming at first glance.
David since you liked the MS3 you should definitely review the NSRT4!! Sweet little cars and a lot of fun to drive!

@@HierarchyOfWeeds I did end up buying one, its been great for me. Ive put 15k+ miles on it in the last year. From what im told you just need to watch a few key things.. Namely upgrading the HPFP and making sure you're tuned if you mod it..
Also i'm not sure im believing 400 wtq on the stock turbo....Ive got full bolt ons minus the turbo and im at 330 wtq and 305 whp

Digging the Hawaii sticker in the back. Looking at an 09 speed3 here on Oahu
i had one of these from 2008-2010 and all i felt it needed in terms of "power" upgrades was an intake and test pipe. some other things aside from that as well to improve things but not in the power department. DI, high compression and a smallish turbo on top of FWD can go quickly from fantastic to annoying with too much power, imo. i had an Accessport when it first came out for that platform and while it definitely made more power...it became more annoying in terms of traction issues, so i sold it.
i felt that car was a great overall value, esp. with the GT package. the base econobox 3 from that gen is great so the MS3 is that much better in every way.

Very nice review! I had a friend who had a mint 2009 MazdaSpeed 3 in white. He loved that car. However, he took it to the track with me. I drive a 97 M3 and he couldnt keep up with me. On the straights he caught up but on the turns it wasnt as good. He sold it and got a s2k. Mazda should have made it an AWD. But its a beautiful car.
Man if only they made the speed 3 awd. there's something about that hatchback. but ill probably end up getting a speed 6 in the near future. if you could do a speed 6 review that would be awesome. i like your reviews, simple straight to the point and honest.
