I'm at the beginning of the video so this may be mentioned. For the Gen1 fellas like myself, these are the points of pain for me that I wish I knew about before buying. Oil cooler replaced, VVT done, AC compressor replaced, carbon cleaned recently, compression test I had to rebuild the motor from scratch a few miles after I bought it. Jumped time and mangled the valves. now my oil cooler has given up and mixed oil in my coolant. it never ends but this platform, coming from a VW guy, IS SO MUCH FUN AND WORTH THE PAIN
I own both a gen 1 and gen 2. And honestly your right on all that. I made a mistake when I bought my gen 2 and it had a bad turbo and vvt problem. Now there both running strong. And I can honestly say. My favorite car is the speed 3. By far. And Iv owned a evo and a wrx before. And i prefer the speed 3. There’s just somthing about them there special 😀
I picked up my Speed 3 from the dealership that was dealer cared for until it was turned in at 100k miles. Full work history on it and everything. Charged me 13k with a 36k mile repair warranty. I pay nothing on anything broken in that period. It’s bone stock too, which is a gem.
@@1970borntorun depends on which gen, personally gen 1 is a touch high, gen 2 is the right price point stock, I'd expect 18K$ for a 2013 tech package GT 30K miles ( not KM ) from a dealer.
Hey thanks so much for making this video! Looking for a Mazda 3 MPS for a second car and I know they're reliable but there are always little things to look for
My gen1 speed has ~72k miles. Bone stock other than a Cobb exhaust and Corksport injector seals. Absolutely love it so much. Love your content super informative👌🏻👌🏻
Love this video cuz I have literally just bought a unicorn 🦄 Stock White 2013 speed3 250k highway kms and going to be working on it!! Watching your vids for tips , thanks man keep up the great content !
One thing I'd also look for is if there's any transmission fluid leaking out of the shift pivot shaft. That means the shift pivot seal needs to be replaced. I learned a lot from my first gen1 purchase, which in hindsight I should've stayed away from. Compression, leakdown test, check shift pivot shaft, check history if vvt was done, check for rust, check hood for paint chips (highspeed driving). Never again.
Excellent tips buddy. First Gen. owner here, and definitely not selling mine till she totally dies. Had it for 13 years, and super reliable for me at least, as well as well maintained with all the maintenance history😇👍 only mods done to it were just aesthetic 👍
It's all personal preference as to what a person wants to do to their car. Before actually doing some bolt on power mods, I would personally start with the bolt on modifications for preventative maintenance components, then go with the suspension setup along with wheel and tire setup to really dial in the balance of the vehicle, then power mods along with a professional tune from PD, Drama or freek. For me, I'd purchase from private sellers as well, I'd be asking for upgraded HPFP w/receipt, compression test, leak down test, smoke test, checking plugs, valve cover rattle for vvt tensioner/chain issues, a year of receipts showing oil changes for every 3-5K miles driven. Anything around 75K+ miles, the vvt as well as the turbo should've been replaced/rebuilt. If the car smokes just a bit and it's fairly transparent at idle at the exhaust and it's straight piped that's a norm, but if it's catted from the dp to exhaust and smoking at idle or cruising ( depending on blueish tint or white smoke ), chances are the PCV/turbo seals/head gasket needs replacing and at the same time might as well do a diamond PCV plate to future proof for a DCC VTA setup, and Chris Wards K04 rebuilt billet internals turbo. Gen1 I'd look into doing a spin-on filter conversion. If RMM, PMM and TMM ( motor mounts ) are OE, chances are they'll go soon after just the 100K+ mile mark, might as well do a set of Damond mounts or personal preference on motor mounts like Cobb, Corksport, SURE, Megan Racing and others alike that are machined billet aluminum. At this point if everything feels great and you don't need any power mods ( the car is already 268HP ), the vehicle is practically unmolested besides preventative bolt on maintenance as well as installing an accessport to monitor important numbers. The person is good to go on mods/vehicle purchase. The speed3/6 is fading away with all the zzb kids pushing the car, breaking it and selling it as runs good, drives good with eBay replacement parts only to get hosed by repairs a few thousand miles down the line or accidents happen and people are doing full part outs because parting out costs more than selling a blown car as a whole depending on the price of mods that were put in to begin with. Correct, mods don't raise value, but the ludicrous thinking of the speed community is parting out fully on a blown speed which is ass backwards to me so the actual thinking of preventative mods doesn't necessarily "raise the value" of the car but keeps it well normalized so the buyer doesn't really overpay on a vehicle that already has bolt ONS they'd think about doing. Unlike the ford FiST/FoST community, this vehicles price point is up to the private sellers averaging the prices because dealers will do 70% Markup from KBB private values. Depends on maintenance and user mods and condition of vehicle too. Gen1 100K miles 6-10K. Gen2 100K miles 9-15K. This is my personal thoughts of recommended prices. Finding a unmolested unicorn speed will start to cost just as much as a decked out 3 because of the rarity and people won't realize that until they see outrageous prices and be toxic about that's too expensive, seller smoking crack, etc.
You should go UK and import them to us they are like £3000-6000 Gen 1 and 2 it's because our dumb gov tax these cars yearly on co2 commission. About £500 on gen 1 and £350 on gen 2 That's why it's cheaper here
Receipts? Pah.. Good luck with that. Besides, all that receipt will tell you is when they purchased the oil, not when they actually changed it. Thats alot of paperwork to keep around. IF i ever plan to do any mods, I'll likely just keep a single sheet (like a spreadsheet) listing whats been changed, and the date & millage it was changed. But so far, i havent done anything to mine, and really dont plan to. I *may* do the HPFP at some point, which ill document, but that'll likely be it. I actually like mine as stock.
Hella overpriced, but maintain and preventative maintenance+future proofing mods will have the car keep essentially 65% of it's value. Read up on everything you can soz you won't go ZZB, have fun with the car!

Confirming oil change is huge. I have a friend who has had a MB roadster for maybe seven years and has never changed the oil. She doesn't drive it much is the excuse. I'm thinking about a Speed 3 and will take note. Are they all this low to the ground?
in the gen 1s you have to remove the bumper to get to the headlights, so dont be alarmed by a slight misfit. I had an issue where a ballast kept burning out and I had to take it off and put it back on three times in one week in the winter, and those clips are fragile... no mods on my car, just removed bumper for headlights on a 11 year old car. Just a heads up
If the car has an aftermarket hpfp best believe it has been ran thru like crazy. Mine is lowered on some rims and that all, engine is 100% stock and running better than my newer car. Is plenty fast from stock.
I bought a 2011 Mazda3 2.5... automatic/manual option. 83k miles stock.... I replaceD the back passenger sway bar and now my gas gauge is acting wonky. If it's not full it thinks it's empty... Then corrects itself. Outside of that I love driving the car. It has about 120k on it now... I've driven across the country twice... Mostly highway miles. Engine sounds great. But way over priced by the time I pay it off. But I had zero credit... At a dealership. In Oregon. Moving to Indiana saved me over $100 on insurance for the same plan.
Should've watched this sooner lol. I just bought a Mazdaspeed 3. It has full bolt ons. Like chatted downpipe, catback exhaust, intake, rmm, upgraded top mount intercooler and so on. I was planning on taking apart of hpfp to take a look to make sure it has the internals on it but it looks like someone has done it because I can see their tool marks. I'm going to tear it apart regardless to just have that piece of mind. I don't mind it being modded, if something goes wrong I can always fix it at work. It's just now I have nothing to do on it lol.

Can't tell unless you open the fuel pump but upgrade HPFP, if dealer has garage I'd ask for a compression, leak down and smoke test to validate healthy engine and no vacuum leaks, 180PSI across all 4 cylinders, 10% within range of each other. No stuttering at wide open throttle from 3kRPM going into full boost. Check idle smoke at exhaust, if it's almost fully transparent white and disappearing quickly you're okay, if it's blue, oils burning somehow, if you can't see through it, best believe head gasket is done, turbo seals are done or the PCV needs replacing. Half of this video is homeboy saying buy stock. And dont get bamboozled
I see too many guys buying a speed with a bunch of mods that they have no idea about lol. Better to buy stock if you’re new to the platform and haven’t done your research properly.
I have a 2007 2.3 but its automatic . it only has like 113.000 on it im trying to decide if i should build it up or cut my loss
@@bradake9970 MS3's only come in manual. Buying an unmolested car means you get to choose your own path and upgrades or not do anything to it besides upgraded HPFP because once the car is rare AF and gone, it'll be private sellers marking up big time.
Supply and Demand at it's best.
