"It has an alignment" lmao
The owner probably didn't tell you this but flooring the car under 3k rpm is considered terrible for the rods and doing that uphill made me cringe.
le cringe army reporting for duty
why rods? i'm not that familiar with this in terms of turbo cars particularly, but what i've found is that it's never good to give it the beans atlow rpm for the gearbox. explain.
I recognize your profile pic...hmmm.. haha!
zloychechen5150 Could be due to the torque, but it's just a known thing in the mazdaspeed community that low revs and WOT = blown engine.
Mazda Seat The cringe I had...
Literally almost screamed at my computer when he floored it in 6th... up a hill... and kept it floored!
Still trying to slow my heart rate.
A Prius driver letting a performance car by? Hell has frozen over.
DZEMAG Are your Prius drivers as smug as ours?
***** Don't have many Prius owners here in Alberta. The smug drivers here are the 'big 3' pick ups. Constantly drive around like assholes.
No regulations here means everyone doesn't have to worry about fuel economy and gas guzzlers.
DZEMAG Australia is regulated to the shithouse unfortunately :( means that our prius drivers, have an over inflated sense of entitlement, to the point that cut off diesal cars and hurl abuse to anyone not driving an electric car lol
DZEMAG that said, we domt have that many prius drivers
+DZEMAG he was probably an European!
2000 rpm in sixth and flooring it? Are you insane?
No, he just correctly expects modern torque-based engine management to keep the engine out of a dangerous regime there.
@@evanfinch4987 if you knew anything about the mzr 2.3 turbo the rods are cast and can bend under wot and boost under 3k rpm in 5th or 6th gear lmfao. do you floor your car in 6th gear going 50mph expecting good power? nah u downshift
I love my little Mazda 3, unfortunately it isn't the MPS (Australia's Mazdaspeed version) but on tight and twisty roads it is a thrill to drive and always leaves a smile on my face.
I bought my MSP3 2007 about 4 years ago with 20k miles from a 65 yr old that barely drove it. I paid 13.5k for it and it was 100% perfect besides needing new tires and shocks went out a few montsh later just a wear and tear thing over time. I did a few mods and it really for the money is pretty fun. It has a more raw feel to it, less stuff to hold you in place its up to you to make the turn perfect. I have a handful of friends that had the STI and focus ST and I pretty much destroy them on straights but it was hard to keep up in the twists because it takes a lot more effort, plus the tires I bought were just regular all seasons so they are pretty soft when you hit the turns making it a bit sloppy. I'm going to sell it soon because I feel I want something nicer and more refined but to be honest for the money it really gave me some smiles.
how do people hate the styling? Its easily the best looking hatchback out there.
gam best looking hatch??!? I'd take a misubishi mirage over one of these styling wise. What about the Megane RS, Golf R, Sirocco, Astra OP
Megane RS maybe the rest fuck no. Speed3 is the perfect hatchback.
As an owner of a regular 2013 3 hatch, I really love the car, but that silly-ass grinning front end still bugs me after 5 1/2 years of ownership.
It looks so good in this color!
STi hatch is the best
Really enjoying these one takes. I like the more casual stuff without all the production that drains the budget for the show. Keep doing what you're doing Matt. Nice to get your take on various cars.
Love the MS3. I've currently got a regular Mazda 3 and have been wanting a MS3 (haven't decided on first or second generation) for a few years now. This makes that desire for a MS3 stronger. I was hoping you'd do one and you reviewed a good one! Thanks Matt!
The 1st gen looks better than the 2nd gen in my opinion and both have 263 hp and 280 ft-lbs stock. I have an 07 MS3 and love everything about the car. If you buy a descent rear motor mount ($100-$125...it also takes 20-30 min. to install) then the car will have basically zero wheel hop during aggressive driving and the amount of torque steer will drop significantly compared to stock. I've also ordered an intake that should get shipped in the next couple days and that alone gets you a solid gain in horsepower and toque. Look up some videos of aftermarket intakes on speed3's and you'll want one even more!
Thanks for the awesome response! I do have to say, I like the first generation more than the second generation. Thanks for that tip about the rear motor mount, I'll keep that in mind! Corksport is a few hours away, so I'll probably be hitting them up when I get my MS3 at some point! Already have some goodies (exhaust mainly) on my MZ3 from them and love it.
I love my 07' First Gen MS3. I have the Cobb Stage 1 tune package, and can't wait to do more mods. It's much more of a sleeper than the GenPu, and some may not like that, but I do! I waited 8 months for my local Mazda dealership to get a decent, used First Gen, and it was well worth the wait. The interior is much better, as well. I've had it for over a year, and have it's full history. The turbos are known to fail every 50-80K. The warranty ends at 70K, and mine went out around 68K lol! Other than that, an amazing car that can haul anything (drums in my case) in a hurry! Hope you can get one! Only 5K 07's were made. :0)
Yeah, I've decided on a first generation. :) Love what you mentioned about it being more of a sleeper than the GenPu. How much did the Cobb Stage 1 tune do in terms of power and torque? You got lucky with the turbo!
I did get lucky! The stage 1 will get you an extra 18-20whp for about $1,200, and it is a VERY noticeable difference.
I love how these one takes get so many views!
I think you are identifying with the young high performance market that doesn't have a bunch of money to build a car.
You can't please everybody!
Keep up the good work Matt!
Thank you guys for finally producing videos consistently! Glad to have you back
While the torque steer on the ms3 is nothing close to as these guys make it out to be, getting the rear, side motor mounts and the transmition mount removes torque steer all together and its pretty inexpensive.
+Jack Andrews What do you mean by "getting". Is there an obvious exchange part for these mounts?
+Kim T. Gjøl yes man... You can buy aftermarket mounts that stiffen the car up
Really? Hmm....
I've driven this car and Matt is right. It does have tq steer but handles really well once you get use to the car and indeed has a great alignment. Love the way this car pulls and it pulls hard. When u push it in a sharp corner full throttle its actually progressive understeer. Matt drove it in wide sweeping corners. At the end of the day all fwd, rwd and awd cars have there pros and con's. Owner prefers fwd and from what it was stock its a huge improvement.
Really wish Mazda would put this engine in the Miata.
Japan making a fast car that actually competes with sports cars? Yeah right lol. It's like they have some law where 200HP is the max power for a car that weighs less than 3,000 lbs.
280 lbs ft of torque in a rwd miata would be overkill
@@lonewanderer958 But NA plus the loss of power to rwd. It'd be a balanced beast with ease to boost.
@@duhopie838 well yeah duh lol. Im saying a miata does not need 280tq. That would just be wheel spin central way too light
Matt, I just want to say that I look forward to your videos and think you do an amazing job. You're living our dream dude.
Matt just about had more than the brakes smoking. 2k RPM in 6th and WOT? On this car, that's asking to introduce parts of your engine to the road.
Gotta love Mazda! I've owned an RX8 and now own a Speed6. Definitely my 2 favorite cars I've ever owned and even driven.
This is my car. Not a stock turbo; that was just a mistake. I know the brakes are not fully up to par, but this is a daily driver for me. It does have 2 week old ATE pads but fluid is orginal (never changed)...I just didnt have the time.
Suspension is actually set up very well and recently had the alignment tweaked along with setting rear sway bar to full stiff. If turns were tigher, he would of been even more impressed. Alignment is very important and there are more places that dont know what they are doing or just don't do a good job.
Btw. It's not on coilovers either. It's has Swift springs and Bilstein shock/struts. Going WOT in 5th and 6th is a big no no obviously (besides of it not having any power)
specvspeedfreak1 You have a very nice car! I've always had a soft spot for fast front-wheel drive compacts. I had an 04 SRT-4 and a Focus ST.
I know you've had a lot of suspension work done. However, something is wrong if you are getting rub. Matt was getting some in this video.
hartsickdisciple the front wheel liner is messed up and is hanging a bit lower, hence the rub. U can see that the front lower drivers side of the bumper is cracked. The wheel liner is trashed and not holding up the greatest.
hartsickdisciple and also its just rub. Surpises me people dont think rub is from something simple like fender rub .. rather go straight to saying there is something wrong with the car? lol
specvspeedfreak1 Well, you just said that something is wrong with your car. It's minor, but something being wrong is what's causing the rub.
hartsickdisciple the way it's written your response is implying there is something wrong with the suspension when you start the sentence with "however" after the mention of knowing a lot of work went into the suspension. ... if you'd known rub usually is from something simple as a fender liner or not having fenders rolled, you would of said it.
It's crazy what a wheel alignment from West End can do!
Enjoy these one take videos very much!
I drive an 07 MS3 and they're definitely one of the top 3 FWD cars to buy for the money
Matt, love the one-takes man keep em coming!!!
Pinning it in this car below 3k with that kind of power and tq....goodfight rods owner was probably cheesed lol.
GBinHD almost blew i heard it
Why would it matter?
Why on earth would it matter what rpm he floored it?
MyOpinionMatterss because in 6th gear under 3k RPM and going full throttle can run the risk of bending a rod from the torque.
do some research. these motors are known for blowing under full boost under 3k rpms
Awesome idea to make these One Take videos. I love seeing the unique cars and seeing how certain modifications change the way cars perform. I've been a subscriber for a while now and have always really enjoyed your reviews! I wish you could take my 135i out lol im in Canada though unfortunately.
When you start listing alignments as mods, wow what kind of shitty alignment jobs are you getting done over there across the pond..?
***** Maybe that's why north americans keep posting pics of evenly worn tyres on reddit as if it was an unbelievable feat of science and technology :D
***** A shop that cant do something as basic as an alignment without fucking it up shouldn't be in business. It's week 1 basics at mechanics school. It's not like people are still using strings and mirrors. If you use wheel aligners made in the last 25 years, there is not a whole lot you can fuck up.. And if you got ones with laser it's impossible.
I guess one explanation could be that it's usually an apprentices job, but come on..
Alignment in a car that torque steers this bad is crucial. If it isn't perfect it will rip the wheel completely out of your hand. I think it was more the owners way of pointing out that he's paid proper attention to detail. All of the alignments I've had were great.
Jason W. Morningwood Not every alignment is optimized for tire wear. I think the point is that the owner had an alignment done to emphasize better handling. Probably to mitigate understeer. I have found that not every alignment shop is friendly with the idea of working on cars with modified suspensions and owners that want specs that go against the factory guidelines.
Dustin Crawford This is correct. You can get custom/"non-recommended" alignments that better suit your mods. Some mechanics don't know how to do anything other than what the computer says, others are just too scared of any sort of liability. Dialing down the perfect setup is useless if your alignment isn't adjusted for it. Not sure I would actually list it as a mod, though...
I love the one takes as filler content between the longer films. I hope it just dosen't take away from the longer better produced films.
I absolutely love these one takes...from hellcats to tuned Camrys
Love the one takes, Matt!! They make me jealous too, however, as i used to live on Mulholland, just west of Decker. Miss driving the canyons daily! Now I'm stuck in the land of yours and Rob's Jeep, of all places! Have a nice little fine dining restaurant here, come check us out if youre in the area again.
Nice been waiting for him to do a speed 3
Oshin's profile has no mods listed, unless im looking in the wrong place.
I own a gen1 speed3 with CAI, turbo back exhaust, down pipe, upgraded HPFP internals, Cobb access port V3 and a custom tune from the Speed Bakery in Baton Rouge LA. I make roughly 290-310hp and roughly 350-400 torque at 21lbs of boost according to the AP, which I'm uncertain about how accurate the digital dyno actually is. But I've pulled (from a roll) last gen Z28's with headers and exhaust, Porsche boxter s with exhaust, Pontiac GTO's, and loads of other imports. It gets decent gas mileage on 93 octane and carries my kids to school and myself to work ever day. It's comfy, spacious and more importantly fun. Sure it's got some torque steer, but it doesn't ruin the experience. If your in the market for one of these as a daily around 10k, I'd highly recommend.
Clayton Shuff Thats 10 k before mods, right? What kinda ball park did you spend on mods? Not asking for detail as Ive always found it to be a bit of a personal question ( for some reason, dunno why, i just feel weird when people ask me exactly what i spent lol) but rough ballpark with mods?
Antifaith29 I traded my 2009 Kia Borrego V6 in for an 08 speed3 with 80k miles. It was an even trade, no money exchanged, just keys and titles. The actual price of the car was 11k, it came with the CAI and exhaust (the dealer thought it was stock). I spent $1,000 on the tune (which I got a discount because my brother knows a guy at the shop), Cobb access port V3 and HPFP internals and did some routine maintenance like plugs and fluids. I've now got 165k miles and all is well. The one thing I wish I could spend more money on is wheels and tires. You definitely need stickier tires, even if it's just a stock motor. It'll shred through 1st and 2nd like nothing. Wider stickier rubber would help A LOT.
***** mine said I had 485lbft one time, it's a little optimistic for sure, but it beats V8's with more than 300hp and torque. It's all in the tune though.
Hell yeah man! I've got the Cobb stage 1, with the V3, and can't wait to do more to my 07' First Gen.
Michael Jade's Drum Channel all you have to do is make it breathe better and get a solid tune and it'll fly. Also upgrade the HPFP internals.
I've got a 2013 MS3 that I've owned for 4 years. Love that car. I never want to sell it.
I actually respect the shit out of the "lets just do everything" model. I guess I am just bitter because there aren't more of them.
Keep it up Matt
I owned a speed 3 for several years and autoxed it, very strong motor, had specific rate springs and bilstein shocks. Torque steer wasn't a issue to me speed 3 owners have to upgrade to stiff motor mounts the factory ones are junk. The car was a little heavy and hard trying to put power down exiting corners but don't get me wrong I loved the car.
Don't know why folks are hating on the one takes. I mean, I wish I lived in SoCal so that Matt could review my car!
Never thought much of these cars until I had one blow my doors off at Laguna Seca. 350 at the wheels and it's a pretty light car. Mazda should put this engine in the new Miata 268hp stock would be about perfect.
What are the wheels on the car? I have a 2011 MS3 also and mine is black and I have the silver stock wheels want a nice looking black pair and yours look like the best I have seen and liked so far! Also do you use the Cobb AccessPort or not to monitor engine vitals?
Having a high horsepower front drive car myself i learned to actually like the feel of torque steer and it became part of my cars personality and driveability. Then i got a 1.5 ratchet diff and forgot about torque steer altogether.
Noticing a pattern of Mazdas being awesome. Even the ones that didn't start out as Mazdas.
I must say I love the way mazdas deliver power.
love the speed3 what a fun car for the $
love the One Take videos.. Great job..
Makes me want to get an MS3. Thanks Matt.
Matt, just as u know, Mazda did move the screen down after 13 model
will have to see what mazda does with the new mazdaspeed3 and 6! Reports say AWD with 300+ hp which I'm excited for...will be time to trade in my rx8 r3 at the time too
Are you ever coming to the UK to do some one take stuff matt?
Those engines are insane even when stock, what was it, 270 hp crank and 380 newton metres of torque?
Are the owners of the cars not invited along for the ride anymore?
they are always invited. Sometimes they choose not to come.
TheSmokingTire
Dunno why they wouldnt wanna tag along with the man, the legend... Matt Farah!
TheSmokingTire You should try to get more videos with the owners riding with you. It's what separates your videos from the other youtube car channels like thatdudeinblue, subaruwrxfan etc.
TheSmokingTire Is there no company that makes a proper diff for this car? Seems like the obvious solution.
I still love these one takes! Keep them coming.
Not sure if you have them in America, but try to find a mk2 Ford Focus (pref sedan) because I have one (Australia) and I would like to see your opinion on it
Great video, Matt!
Would you awesome if you could get a hold of a s2000
This is a wild idea, what about going to mexico and do Juantakes?
Love the show and cant complain, other than sound leaves some to desire, but its to be expected from a show filmed inside cars :)
You mentioned an alignment as a mod lol
Can't wait for you to review an integra
we have a heavily modified integra on the schedule
TheSmokingTire But Will you fit in one? Lol....
Is there any news on the new speed 3's? Are they going to be made or AWD? I'm thinking about getting myself one but not wanting the FWD.
where is the wheelwell link?
Speaking of torque steer when are you doing a turbo vr6 Corrado!?!?
350 horse and stock brakes, not clever.
It's a nice little setup but having a highly modified engine on a mostly stock car could be a dangerous combination.
the stock brakes are fine and there are few options actually better. brakes dont work on horsepower, they work on speed.
MrNicholg Uh, more horsepower means you can reach higher speeds.
*****
where and when?
SaKuLification The stock brakes on those cars are fantastic. The pads have there limitations.
What are the wheels on this car? I have a 2011 MS3 with full Cobb intake (turbo inlet hose, intake and filter) also a Cobb AccessPort with the appropriate turn for the parts that are on the car and the 93 gas I have here in PA. Any tips you all have would be great! Didn't know the know about the no WOT under 2000 in any gear. Very good to know. My car has 17 thousand miles ATM also.
I miss my 13 speed3, I could not find a decent used one here canada so I just went with the fiesta st.
I'd love to see you take Crowford's BRZ through the Snake, that area, and Angeles Crest. D:
Where is the Mach 1 ? :/ Did I miss it somewhere?
I'm surprised the Prius sort of moved over.
He is speeding quite a bit through those roads with other cars present. Are there no cops in there ever?
I wish this car was setup properly for Matt to drive. Torque steer should not be much of a factor with a proper suspension/ tire setup. Also, canyon carving with stock brakes pads isn't the smartest thing. Can someone share the actual link for his garage on wheelwell, I'm very interested to see his setup.
FWD with power will torque steer. this car is an easy mark for mentioning the phenomenon. It won't go away with alignment or tires. His wheel offset is minimally less positive. Mazda limits torque in 1st and 2nd depending on steering wheel angle .That is likely removed through the software tune he's running on this car.
MrNicholg The right mods can seriously limit torque steer on this platform though not eliminate it.
torque steer shouldn't be much of a factor if your limbs are not made of melted cheese. i think it is even good, because if a fwd car isn't fighting you a bit,it is 100% miserable to drive because fwd is depressing to begin with.
Not properly setup? Read the mod list. No tq steer on modded ms3? Hell even a stock ms3 tq steers. The brakes were 2 weeks old and not oem pads, so it didnt have that great bite but they are still good. I wonder if the smoke was actually from the brakes. it didnt seem he was super aggressive with the brakes. He was shifting alot though and could of been the clutch.
Not all mods increase torque steer. A lot of mods will reduce it such as good suspension, better bushings to reduce deflection, upgraded motor mounts, etc. My MS3 stock was when it's torque steer was at it's worst.
Tuned by Nishan. If you're going to mention the best Mazda tuner on the planet, you gotta pronounce his name right.
You did it a little in this video but I think it would be nice if you told a little about some of the mods on some of these cars. I don't think everyone wants to go to a different website just to look at the mods.
Matt I wish someone with a 96 saab 9000 turbo would get ya for a one take. I'd let ya drive mine but I live in PA
Have you tried the 2013 MSP3 ? Do they all have the same motor ? Nice video.
+ricardopr54 Mechanically is the same except Mazda made the exhaust quieter on the newer ones, for better nvh.
Any MK4 R32's? That would be kewl.
a lot of WOW's in the video so it must be good :)
Yeah definitely looks 100x better with that aftermarket radio.
What do you guys and girls prefer: Golf GTI or Mazdaspeed 3?
I'm awaiting a K20 Hatch!
matt, my dad has a 2010 mazda 3 and i feel cramped driving it and im 6 foot 1. do you really have as much space as you said?
OK wheelwell website is not letting me read the story so I need to know what head unit is on this car
It's not on coilovers, but much more mild Swift springs. It clearly rode better than something on cheap coilovers on the street.
Put a turbo in it that doesn't build boost until after 3k and the power is quite manageable. My 2012 msp 3 has 370whp and 390 tq. Pulls very hard with very little torque steer. Gotta know how to drive it lol.
It's the same with my mazda, a lot of wheel vibration from the motor even when i'm idling.
I want to update the media system, where can i buy it? Eu?
Cars in Singapore and Malaysia are VERY costly coz of taxes. A stock low mileage 2012 MS3 is at USD20k.
More fiesta please Matt.
There's no link in the description fort his wheelwell

You should drive an 03 maxima se manual
Oshin, still got those Ohio plates! :D -Jason
Do a one take on a mazdaspeed mx-5. Factory turbo Miata.
Pause / Unpause win
I love watching these videos even though I drive a POS 94 chevy s10 that can't pass a semi on the highway haha. I do however RIDE a Yamaha R6 (it's my baby)
Can you put the image of the RPM's ?
does this have a limited slip
I'm a 02 Mazda Protege5 owner and I LOVE it, would anyone recommend a newer MS3 as a good, modern upgrade? Or look into something else?
+Jake Nuno Its a massively fun car to drive but abit hard to live with if you get caught up in traffic jams. The mileage is very poor but it does not deter me, ive owned mine since 2011 and it still puts a smile on my face every time i drive it. But you should just save your money and but the new Mazdaspeed 3 which will be coming in the future.
are there just never police there ?
Tuner's name is Nishan... got that "h" in there...
Wish there was a mod list. It's definitely not 350whp. That's beyond the flow rate of the stock turbo (which is 35lbs/minute). Stock turbo can only support a max of 320-330 at the wheels WITH ethanol or methanol to stave off KR enough to run the timing levels necessary to get that power level. You need a BNR S3, a GT2871, or a GTX2867 (or bigger) to get 350+. If this guy's claiming 350, show me a dyno sheet or didn't happen... This platform is extremely vetted out and basically the world record was a guy making ~345 with a major amount of methanol on a Stratified tune. It's impossible on just ethanol alone. Methanol makes it possible because it makes the BATs very, very cold, and cooler air is much more dense/has more oxygen. And that tune was on the ragged edge, pushing the poor stock K04 extremely hard. Longevity goes out the window on a tune like that...
I have a fully bolted 2010 MS3 with a BNR S3 tuned for an ethanol blend by Justin (from FREEKTUNE), and I put down ~385/380 at the wheels, so I'm coming from an insider's perspective. Regardless, stock turbo MS3s can be very, very fun too... Nice ride...

MrNicholg Can't see the link because it's in a member section. I only lurk on MSF.
So it has a BNR? Then Matt was misspeaking when he kept mentioning "stock turbo"? With a BNR, 350whp is definitely possible. Was it not BNR'd at the time of testing??? Confused...
i posted the important part anyway, mod list above
MrNicholg So was Matt Farrah's comment 100% inaccurate or what? Was it stock turbo at the time of filming??? If so, definitely not 350whp...
No, it's the same size as a replacement, sort of, but bigger inlet and more boost pressure

You probably warped his caliper, nice job matt.
Lol engine vibration through the steering wheel is a problem for me in my first gen 3 hatch
This might be a dumb question, but how has this guy not been arrested for speeding?
Just never been a big fan of these. Always feel like they've had too many corners cut. Replaced a few engines and turbos in them as well.
I used to own an '08 'Speed 3 with intake and tune. My current CTS-V has better traction at twice the whp. The Mazda was more responsive and was hilariously hard to drive without making my passenger's head bob, but had a pathetic top end.
