    First two gears in the Speed3 are torque limited! I bought my speed stock and put a few things into it and it absolutely obliterates so many cars. Your comments on the clutch and shifter are so spot on. This car has the weirdest clutch of any car I've driven (and I've driven a 1993 Audi S4) and this car blows that clutch out of the water.

    These cars come very De-tuned from the factory. Even stock with a new tune they rip, add some bolts ons and its pretty nuts, lots of character.

  • @future62

    Its weaker in lower gears because they limit power down there to limit wheelspin and torque steer. Kind of a waste of power IMO

    • @Cydro12
      @Cydro12 10 років тому

      I drive a Colt CZT. which has a lot of wheelspin in first gear. ESP does kick in tho, which still makes it accelerate quickly

      It's heavily torque limited in 1~3 gears. I owned a 2008 MS3 and dumped the car in less than year as felt cheated that the full 263HP wasn't available until you hit 80 MPH in 4th gear. It's why the reviewer wasn't blown away with the acceleration. How they have managed to sell this car for 7 years and haven't been sued for false advertising is beyond me.

    • @future62
      @future62 10 років тому +14

      To be fair it's FWD...... you probably wouldn't have been able to put all the power down until 3rd anyway. FWD is good for small, low power cars and big highway cruisers....

    • @jjuhring1
      @jjuhring1 10 років тому +6

      Turning off traction control doesn't eliminate the torque limiting.
      But believe what you want.

    a few thoughts on this review coming from a 2013 Mazdaspeed3 owner. most of what you say seems to be the opposite of what 90% of other reviewers say about the MS3.
    you mention minimal torque steer but most people rip this car for its torque steer. as an owner of one, i am more with you though. i really dont think it is as bad as most people make it out to be, but it has just enough to make you work and it makes it fun.
    you are spot on about how it can feel as though it isnt even turbo charged until you are around 2500 rpm. different than the competition, but it is one of the things i really liked about it. makes it more desirable as a daily driver in my opinion. you say you want more drama, and with that said, again, most reviewers think this car is a huge handful and jam packed full of drama. just interesting that you seem to think the opposite of the consensus on several of the cars attributes.
    everything you say about the clutch and shifter is 100% accurate. it is tricky at first but you get used to both pretty quickly. after owning my MS3 for a year now i almost dislike other clutches because i have just gotten so used to the unique clutch in my car. it really is like a racing clutch. its fun. the shifter grows on you but there are definitely better ones out there in the competition.
    finally, a comment on this car you drove... that thing looks like it has been bathed in armorall.... lol seriously all of the plastic surfaces and leather looked overly shiny and like the finish was ruined. maybe it was just the camera or the lighting, and i hope that is the case because that interior looked ruined! too bad because in my opinion the MS3's interior is what really sets it apart from things like the WRX and Evo. it is just much higher quality.
    good review though. i love my MS3 and would take it over any of the direct competitors 100% of the time, but i respect your opinion and appreciate your work. keep it up!

    torque is cut in 1st-3rd gear to reduce torque steer apparently which is why you might feel like it doesn't have the torque it claims.

    Ive just watched a review from ThatDudeinBlue on the Mazda 3 speed(Known as the Mazda 3 MPS here in South Africa), and I prefer your reviews to be honest. You go into a lot of detail! Inside and outside! Performance, buttons, plastics! etc. Thats what Im looking for in a review! Nothing against ThatDudeinBlue, he provides a very interesting watch, But im looking for details on the cars! + You generally review stock cars! Keep up the good work! I enjoy watching your reviews!

    Really glad you were able to find this car to review. This was one of the cars that 'needed' to be reviewed by you. :) I really like how the MS3 looks. I prefer this design a lot more than the Focus ST. I agree the gear shift is oddly placed & gears are very close. I sat in an older Mazda 3 and getting into 1st and 3rd gear, it just felt different. It didn't seem like you were selecting the right gears, but I'm sure you'd perfect that after time. From the visuals, that material on the seats do look like they feel pretty cheap.
    Some people were saying torque is limited in the lower gears and it's the reason why it didn't torque steer when you got on it and felt like it was lacking power. In my opinion, it would've been a much better car overall if they hadn't set it like that. They should've had a traction control switch that would activate that for some of the people that would prefer that type of control. And then traction control off to allow all the power to go through. Overall, great review! I'd choose this MS3 over the Focus ST.

    Well damn. I've been watching this guys videos lately and this was the one I was hoping there would be that same excitement I see in all his other videos bc I'm a Mazda fan, I've owned 3 3's. But I've never been able to afford a speed3. I was hoping that Mazda would start making them again and I could afford one in the future. Still the normal 3s have superb handling so I was surprised to see that he wasn't more impressed with it.

    @ 8:20 In other reviews I've watched and read, the opposite was always said... Are you sure traction control didn't kill the power? Is it possible that torque is limited in 1st, and even 2nd gear? After all, you only went full throttle in 1st - not sure if that was adequate enough to judge the 3's "fun" factor.

    Not only does it limit power in the first 3 gears, but on gen 2 when you go WOT the throttle body opens slowly. That's why I think Gen 1's feel a grip load faster and the boost hits a lot harder.

    This car has an outrageous amount of torque steer. I don't know how you're going to say a mini cooper you drove has more. That alone kind of discredits this review for me. Not trying to fan-boy either, I have a few gripes about the car myself... I also feel like the ST is the car you want to bring to the track and the MS3 is the car that would put the bigger smile on your face. Just my opinions.

    Just bought this car last week and the WOT is totally true. You have to learn how to handle it. I put some research behind me and 3k to 6.4-5k is where it shines and you have to roll into boost the WOT. I traded my RSX Type-S for the MS3 and immediately felt nostalgia but a long trip to PA and back to MD taught me more than I needed to know. MS3 is definitely a keeper once you figure out the kick and throttle response needed to maximize boost engagement.

    Good review mate. I've driven both the Mazda 3 MPS (Mazdaspeed 3) and the Ford Focus ST.
    The Mazda 3 MPS is more involving than the Focus ST, but that's primarily down to the MPS's rawness. The clutch is slightly hair triggery, light to middleweight, and the gearshift has long gates, but is precise.
    I didn't like the torque steer though, despite the engine management limiting torque in first and second gear. The Focus ST torque steers as well, and is an unfortunate legacy of high powered front drive hatches.
    I'd have the MPS 3, over the Focus ST, but only because it's more manic. The Focus ST is better rounded, though, despite the HUGE turning circle. Both great, fast cars that handle well, but both are flawed.

    I have a white 2013 with tech pack and the newer perks definitely make it a lot better! (9” diagnal touch screen w/nav, definitely makes the dash and plastic look way better overall) 1st gear sucks but 2-4 are always fun, torque steer isn’t insane, over dramatic people, just enough to make sure you have your hand on the wheel which you said be doing anyway since you’re, you know, driving..
    I like having 1 of the seemingly only 3 in Tulsa lol

  • @jamesrsk
    @jamesrsk 10 років тому

    The reason it doesn't feel as quick as you expected taking off, is due to the fact they are torque and power limited through 1st 2nd and 3rd. by 4th gear you get full power. I'm guessing they did this to reduce torque steer.

    1st n 2nd do feel weak if you AR on stock tune due to ecu limit torque in first ,second gears. But once you are moving, it pulls pretty hard. Take it for what it is, it is 2k cheaper than a WRX, yet in dry condition is faster.

    This is another one I've been really waiting for. I was expecting to hear you complain about the torque steer but surprised to hear otherwise... Carlos Lagos made it sound like the ST was way better in that regard. I trust you more tho so I wonder if Ford paid everyone off to rave about the ST now b/c my impression was that was the better car in outright performance

    The Mazda mazdaspeed3 won't rip your head off because the first 3 gears are torque limited to save the transmission. Better off starting half throttle and then a quick roll on to full throttle to get best acceleration out of them.

      Richard Veihdeffer III The Mazdaspeed3 DOES come with a Torsen LSD from the factory. And the boost isn't limited in the first two gears to save the transmission, it's to limit torque to help counter torque steer. that is why they made longer gears in the 2nd generation Speed3 and it doesn't feel as fast off the line as the first gen.

    I think the factory tune might keep that turbo from spiking which is why your missing that throwback. Factory Focus ST also did this, now that I have it tuned lol insane. Mazda probably did the same to keep wheelspin down. My tune only lets full tq in 3rd gear with 2nd being limited to 300 and first to 200 for traction. But factory tunes usually have that tq spike reduced in all the gears.
    Tuned the ST makes 350 Wheel torque. And the Mazdaspeed has a limited slip differential and the Focus ST does not have a limited slip which is why you are fighting it.

    I bought my 2013 speed3 a while ago, and fuck it's the most fun I've ever had in a car.
    This car isn't meant to be launched full throttle, yeah the boost is limited in the first few gears, but once you're rolling in third and you floor that thing at around 3-4k, you're gone. If you want to launch this car efficiently you're going to need a Cobb Accessport to remove the limiting, and get launch control.

  • @craigzilla100

    Wrx has much larger tubro lag, thus snapping the head back and increasing the "fun factor". I've driven one and can agree to it. I own a Mazdaspeed 6. The handling will murder the speed 3. Both great cars though. Great review!

    Nother car review said the opposite: that the focus st feels more precise because of torque vectoring and the ms3 has to be fought with more around corners, making the focus the better car, but the ms3 the somewhat fulfilling drive. Don't know what to believe anymore.

    I think the reason the car doesn't feel all that quick is because you currently own a turbo charged vehicle that is lighter, and quicker despite being down 100hp. When you had the BRZ and then jumped into a turbo charged car to test it, it would feel mind blowingly quick in comparison due to the lack of torque in the BRZ. When I had a Ford Probe Turbo 145hp/190 ft lbs, and hopped into a 300hp/300fl lbs Mitsubishi 3000 GT, I was unimpressed. But the Mitsu was a much heavier car and the torque came in around 3000 rpms vs 1500 on the Probe. The Mitsu was undoubtedly a faster car, but it didnt feel like it. Given the vehicle you currently own, you should drive around in something that is NA before hopping in to test a turbo vehicle, I doubt you'll experience the same disappointment. BTW thoroughly enjoy your reviews!

    I owned the 2013 MS3 for about 1 year and found the suspension too rough for my back, and my right knee was constantly resting on that hard plastic -which made it very uncomfortable on my knee. Definitely not a comfortable ride...for me anyway. However, I loved the acceleration - even with lots and lots of torque steer. I don't understand how this reviewer didn't notice the torque steer on his 2012. Even though I had great times with the car, I traded it in for a 2014 WRX. Although the latter's mpg is slightly worse than the former, the WRX's ride is much more comfortable, and there's more front room space for my knees. From what I've read, the WRX is faster than the MS3 (0-60), and there's definitely no torque steer on the WRX due to AWD. So far I can't complain about the switch.

    First gen Mazdaspeed3 for me. The new one does not compare to its competition. I'd rather a Mini Cooper S or a Golf GTI (or even the R). I'm glad Mazda isn't giving up and their cars are still good to drive, but they really need to get their 'Zoom-Zoom' right. The new Mazda 6 is a stunning car, and I'd love to buy it with the manual transmission on offer, but the car seriously lacks power. If they made a Speed6 version like the first gen with AWD and Turbo-4, I'd be all over that car. So Mazda, I like what you do, but put some more excitement into your cars. A very spot on review Matt, I felt the same way after driving one of these about everything, except the passenger climate control :P

    also 1st/2nd gear are boost limited btw
    3rd gear pulls a lot harder
    mazdaspeed 3 has always been better than the focus st, gti.
    the speed 3 is sharper but the boost is limited in 1st/2nd to neutralize the torque steer

    • @MonRoeTheory
      @MonRoeTheory 10 років тому

      Very true but unfortunately there is a solid reason why they have that because if you disable it which you can and unfortunately a lot of retards on here don't think you can... If you slam on it you just get nothing but tire spin and you would burn through tires so fast that's why they had to put a limiter on the boost

    • @oldfashionedwrx3574

    Considering how old this video is, I'm sure it's already been said, but you don't get 280lb-ft of torque in 1st and 2nd gear in this car. Mazda limited the torque in 1st and 2nd gear to reduce the amount of torque steer. You can really feel the difference on a longer acceleration run through 3rd gear.

    It is sort of odd to me you couldn't tell the turbo was kicking in, The one i test drove only had a cobb intake but you could definitely tell it was turbo haha. Also Other reviews have started what they loved about the MSP3 was the crazy boost coming on with the turbo. Also everyone ever said it torque steers like a pig which I also never felt.

    So I'm going to invest in a new car. I can either get a 2014 camaro ss, or a used 2012 s5. Which would you recommend? Also there's a possibility I could work out a deal for a 2011 m3. But that one is more of a long shot. Which do you think is the best choice?

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  10 років тому

      Totally depends on what you want. Very different characters for each. I'd personally do the S5 I think. The Camaro would be nice, but not nearly as comfy as the Euros. M3 is good if you want rear wheel drive, S5 is better if you want all wheel drive obviously. The Camaro would probably be more reliable, but would possibly cost more for insurance. Lots of things to consider but if it were my money I'd get the S5 probably.
