    1) Some time after the defeat of the Soviet Union and before 1990, GDI was formed within the UN Security Commission and was internally known by the name Special Operations Group Echo and/or Black Ops 09.
    2) The First Tiberium War actually started in 2019/2020. 1995 was just the date that Tiberium arrived on Earth. I will note that this is a retconned date that in my opinion doesn't make that much sense. Irregardless, it is the date that has the most evidence backing it up.
    3) I messed up the percentages for the Red, Yellow and Blue Zones. It should be 30% Red Zones, 50% Yellow Zones, and 20% Blue Zones.

      The 2020 date in Renegade's manual was a major mistake that makes no sense whatsoever, for various reasons. It also directly contradicts Westwood's own statements saying that Tiberian Sun (which explicitly begins in late-2030) begins 30 years after the end of Tiberian Dawn. This squarely places the First Tiberium War as happening from 1997 to 2000.
      Regardless of EA's meddling or alleged retconning, Westwood's intent was always for TD to take place at the end of the 1990's, not 2020. Some sources also claim that the 2020 date in Renegade's manual was simply a typo, perhaps intended to be 2002 (which conveniently happens to be the year Renegade was released 🤔).

    A mod for Tiberian Sun (But is fully standalone) called Twisted Insurrection has plot of Brotherhood of Nod winning the first tiberium war and they engineered the downfall of GDI by sniping the White House with Ion cannon.
    It portrays probably the most grim depiction of the universe, planet is run by terrorist zealots and tiberium is mutating faster than in any game depicted and GDI... or what has left of it are being disbanded by UN which is under control of Brotherhood. So they need to stage a insurrection and team up with a corporation that deals with manufacturing vehicles and weapons to save mankind.

    • @Jethild
      @Jethild  3 роки тому +52

      Incoming long comment.
      Yes, I read that part of the Renegade manuel at the time I was making this video. But to me that date felt like a retcon. Yes, you could say it was an official retcon by Westwood Studios themselves. However, I still don't think it makes that much sense. It's pretty clear to me that Tiberian Dawn is, especially from a cultural standpoint, a product of the 1990s. From the soundtrack, to the units, (A10s, Humvees, DPVs, etc.), to the story and setting itself. With the Brotherhood clearly being based off insurgent groups and terrorist organizations from that time period. Much of the conflict in the game takes place in either Africa or Eastern Europe. At that time you had the Bosnian War going on which, again, was a major influence on the game. And Africa has always had conflicts at various points in history involving warlords and civil wars.
      Also if 2019 is the date of TW1 then the technological gap between it and TW2 doesn't make any sense. If the war lasted roughly 3 years ending in 2022 then that leaves only an 8 year difference between them. So in 8 years, somehow GDI managed to invent mechanized walkers, hovercraft, a large space station, and space ships all on their own? With no help from a device like the Tacitus? If we compare that to our own world in 2020, at best we have reuseable rockets.
      But I will say, I do think it makes sense for the First Tiberium War to have officially started some time after 1995. I personally would say 1999, but I think anytime between 1997 - 2001 would be a more solid time period of when the war officially started. That way Tiberian Dawn remains consistent and in line with the culture of it's time. And the roughly 30 year technological gap between TW1 and TW2 is kept consistent as well.
      But when making this video I thought it best to just stick with what the official start date of the conflict was at the time Tiberian Dawn was made. I could write more but at that point I might as well make a whole video on the topic which might be worth doing in the future.

      @@Jethild Really good points there. I think the reason the Renegade manual retconned the date to 2019 was because someone decided to make everything in Renegade have a futuristic Tiberian Sun style, and have a bunch of advanced sci-fi weapons like laser rifles and personal ion cannons, personal cloaking devices, and Nod already having mutants and cyborgs. By the time Renegade came out in 2002, the mid nineties was already "the past", and maybe they felt it would seem weird to have laser guns and stealth suits in a game set in 1995.
      I did enjoy all the sci-fi stuff, I love energy weapons, plus it meant that both the player's arsenal and the enemies you faced had a cool progression over the course of the game. But in original C&C the Obelisk of Light, Ion Cannon and Stealth Tank were cutting edge experimental prototypes, and they seemed plausible in a game set in the "present day". There was never any suggestion that infantry could have cloaking suits or laser guns.
      If it weren't for the holograms of Kane throughout the game and the final missions featuring the Temple of Nod in Sarajevo, I'd have thought that Renegade was actually set some time inbetween Tiberian Dawn and Tiberian Sun. The look and style of of the weapons, and Nod's black and red vehicles and uniforms fit perfectly for a story set mid way between TW1 in 1995 and TW2 in 2034, indeed 2019 would probably be an appropriate date for it. Renegade could have worked great as a sort of "C&C 1.5", a small GDI commando mission against Black Hand operations in the "Cold War" between the two big Tiberium wars. Except multiple things in Renegade make clear that it is actually set during the events of Tiberian Dawn, and Kane is be. So I agree with ignoring the Renegade date retcon and sticking with the original Tiberian Dawn date.

      My head canon is that Renegade depicted the most advanced NOD Regiment that had the best force projection capabilities and thus was targeting locations globally and at a rapid pace that Dead Six and GDI were struggling to keep up with, while the bulk NOD conventional army was much larger and fought in Africa and Europe.

    A very obscure fact: The GDI were not always the knights in shiny armor they presented themselves as. They committed rather hideous war crimes against unaffiliated people on the Balkan, which motivated Anton Slavik to join Nod (this information is only available on the CnC wiki, it's left out of the games themselves). Also, they were acting rather discriminating towards the Forgotten during the second Tiberium war, referring to them as "shiners" and using them as cannon fodder to buy time for a base construction during the assault on the Chem-missile production and storing plant. McNeil was a rather rare exception, treating them somewhat better. But he was mostly doing so, so he could commission their Ghost Stalkers for his covert ops. For me, Tiberian Sun is the best installment of the franchise story-wise. It has no real "good" or "bad" guys. It has a gritty and dark atmosphere, very fitting for a dying and war-torn world the Earth has become. And along comes C&C 3, which is technically far superior (gameplay-wise, Tiberian Sun suffers from numerous glaring flaws, such as poorly designed missile weaponry and the terrible AI of the Tiberium harvesters), but its writing is a few tiers below the writing of Tiberian Sun. And Tiberian Sun had those impressive (for their time at least) CG scenes with its units in action, surpassing even Starcraft's cinematics.

    • @Jethild
      @Jethild  3 роки тому +24

      I would advise that one should be careful when reading from the CnC Wiki, as I have seen plenty of entries on there that do not provide sources for where they got some of there information. Which leads to some info being either wrong or misleading.
      In terms of the stuff about Slavik, they are just pulling from the Cnc Bible. Which was Westwood's attempt at trying to canonize certain elements of the CnC universe. The key word here being "attempt" as it was ultimately a failure, and the version that can be found online was leaked, and is therefore technically "unofficial." Also the online version is just one version/draft, when apparently there had been a few. So the supposed other ones that never became public could have differing information. Some stuff from the bible ended up making it's way into Tiberian Sun and some didn't.
      So the information about Slavik could be correct, since it's the only place where we actually do get any background info on him. But because it's technically unofficial, I'm not sure if it can be taken as 100% canon.
      I do agree that GDI aren't exactly the pinnacle of all that is good. They have their negative aspects like all large organizations do. I also agree that Tiberian Sun did have the best atmosphere and world building in the franchise. Though personally I prefer dark gritty settings in fiction, and TS fits that pretty well.

    • @RoadKamelot2nd
      @RoadKamelot2nd 3 роки тому +7

      @@Jethild You have a point there, said info should be taken with a grain of salt. Regarding Slavik, it's backed up by the fact that he didn't commit a single act of violence against civilians. There were no civilian massacres nor mass abductions under HIS command (but I seriously doubt that the other inner circle members were the same). That said, Slavik was by no means a saint. His massacre of the Forgotten using hijacked GDI units is but one instance. He was incredibly efficient, accomplishing major victories with limited assets against a military juggernaut. But that efficiency was quite ruthless and he was merciless towards anyone who obstructed Kane's plans. Unlike the other generals, he was a soldier more than anything.
      Tiberian Sun really needs a remake. A remaster, even the one like Tiberian Dawn got, wouldn't be enough. Missile weapons, sensor arrays, aircraft in general.... and a lot more would need fixing. Doubt we'll ever get one, but cautious optimism is not bad in this case.

    • @Jethild
      @Jethild  3 роки тому +12

      @@RoadKamelot2nd I actually think there is a very good possibility of there being TS/RA2 remasters. TD/RA1 sold well, so their is certainly incentive for EA to do more remasters. Though I don't think they'll put much effort into fixing the issues you described. Theirs obviously this wave of nostalgia going on in gaming culture at the moment. So remasters are a good way for publishers and developers to cash in on it.
      I am very doubtful that a brand new CnC game will ever get made though. RTS has become a niche genre and Battle Royales are currently the hip thing now. That's why practically every major publisher has to have at least one in their portfolio of games.

The Allied ending being canon is based off what one of the former WW designer's, Adam Isgreen, said on the old Petroglyph forums years ago.
      Although overall it really doesn't matter, as EA owns the IP now and so far I haven't seen them say anything official in regards to which ending they think is the canon ending to RA. So I guess it's really just up to whichever one people want to believe. As of right now, I just stick with the Allied ending that WW intended it to be according to Adam Isgreen. This is incorrect; According to Westwood themselves, the Tiberium timeline follows the Allied victory, and the Allied victory leading to TD just makes far more geopolitical sense as well.
      The Soviet timeline in RA1 is just a non-canon 'what-if' scenario, or at best, a case where it doesn't matter who wins because Kane and the Brotherhood will rise either way.
      Meanwhile, the UN-supported Allied victory paves the way for the UN taking a more direct role in international peacekeeping operations, leading to the formation of SOG BO9 and eventually its successor, the Global Defence Initiative (which primarily consists of the former Allied Nations and the occupied former Soviet Union).

      @@BM-yn7mcIf you're still out there, I want to speak my head canon about the Soviet campaign. With the Allies defeated, the Soviets held absolute control over Europe. The Allies, still recovering from their defeat, later formed the Global Defense Initiative in another effort to contain the Soviets. However, unbeknownst to them, Stalin was killed by "traitors" during his personal celebration in England, with those traitors revealed to be agents of a secret religious organization called "The Brotherhood of Nod". The Nod agents proceeded to promote Stalin's best commander as Chairman of the CPSU and, as such, leader of the Soviet Union. In a fate not that far different from our own Soviet Union, the Union collapsed in the early 90s and as such Europe is able to finally rebuild properly with most of the Allies (and I presume GDI) having reasserted control of the continent along with improving relations with the new Russian Federation. These improving relations also resulted in the transfer of some of Russia's old Soviet era technology such as the WW2-era Mammoth tank. Meanwhile, third parties within the Federation also lent "The Brotherhood" some of their old tech in the form of cybernetics. Again however, unbeknownst to pretty much everyone, except those within this secret "Brotherhood", the entire planet would change. Firstly, for the better, then second, after a few decades, for the worst...

So they (EA) decided to do a complete other thing.+ They fixed some things in the MP and put this great Game Mode in... 'World Domination" it was called, if I remember correctly.But the Core problem remaind: This ass old SAGE engine with that 30 fps cap! Veteran players, like myself, complained that the gameplay feels 'slow'. It was barely ok playin the Campaign, but the MP was ungodly. Remember how SC coined the Term 'Zerg rush'? Well, back in the day, CnC coined the term 'Tank rush'. I think it wasn't the fault of the Dev Team... I think EA denied to allocate further Resources to them in order to develope a new Engine. Probably because a 'SAGE2' would've no usage outside of CnC & 'Battle for Middel-Earth'. By the time CnC 3 was finished, BFME2 already hit the stores... And was rejected. (The 1st title was far superior) But that's just speculation. Conclusion: They should've developed a succesor to the bloody SAGE engine before CnC3 (And BFME2). I mean, they had almost 4 yrs. between General: ZH and CnC3. They're also speculations that SAGE2 was in developement, but was cancled. There were a number of flashback sequences before the commando re-entered the atmosphere. The armor was melted during re-entry. GDI and Nod fought in Area 51. During the fighting, GDI inadvertently activated technology from Command & Conquer: Red Alert in one of the vaults, including a Chronosphere. A chrono vortex threw Yuri back in time. Yuri was the result of Nod's psychic experimentations and an acolyte of Kane. This would make Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 another branch of the timeline. "
    Also the tacitus and the forgotten have their story but the tacitus become major plot. "We had also developed two completely different origins for the Tacitus, and since both stories leveraged that origin, I'm trying to remember what each included. One was centered around the Tacitus being a soul-prison for the leader of the martian force that fought against the Scrin (they knew how to beat the Scrin, but discovered it too late) while the Earth was still primordial, and the other was centered around the Scrin rebels stealing the "bible" of the Scrin -- which may or may not have been written by them in the first place -- and the Scrin Primal's crusade to recover it."
    Both were interesting and had some cool reveals.
    Also the forgotten aswell and finally the full reason why the scrin want to destroy human race "The Scrin didn't account for what effect Tiberium would have on some humans (i.e. the forgotten). They thought it would kill all humans off, but unfortunately, some that were exposed survived and actually began to be able to harness Tiberium's energies themselves. They turned out to be humankind's most powerful weapon against the Scrin, since they could control Tiberium in a way the Scrin could not, making them a huge threat. The forgotten were going to become a full faction in the expansion for the game."
    Take that C&C4 hater i know the gameplay is suck and worst thx to damn EA but... After read this tiberian incursion plot and story i finally understand why you guy hate C&C4 is not the C&C4 you guy need to hate, you guy must hate the EA why not just reuse the plot of tiberian incursion in the first place

    They need to make Command and Conquer Kane's Ascension. Eliminate CnC4 from Canon and make it to where the skrin come back, nod and gdi fight the skrin at times together as allies, and depending on the mission on their own and at the end Kane leads the brotherhood through a portal to the skrin's homeworld where Kane "ascends" and rules as a "god" over his people while gdi helps to rebuild the earth.

    Do we know anything about GDI’s military structure? Like do they have separate branches ie army, navy Air Force? What does a GDI infantry or armored company look like on paper?

    • @marks7484
      @marks7484 Рік тому

      Well, as far as I am aware, generally GDI has 5, ish branches:
      1) Space forces- Ion cannons, space stations, their maintenance teams, and generally all they need to maintain the space dominance around Earth. help commanders on the ground if the infrastructure required is built and supplied. Can't see them as part of any other branch due to sheer size and complexity.
      2) Main GDI forces- your bog standard divisions like the ones in the tib wars campaign, do ... pretty much everything? Defend the blue zones, fight in yellow, and if needed venture into Red. Equipment is the most standard of all and generally is your jack-of-all-trades tool in the GDI military.
      3) Steel Talons- experimental high-tech forces, on paper, in practice tib war 2 hardware slightly upgraded and cutting the budget in the infantry. Combat wise? Old, but not really outdated firepower that can still throw decent punches both against NOD (Which was the point) and Scrin. Tho, limited in number, and as stated in the video suffered one significant defeat after the other, so probably aren't that charming in GDI high command.
      4)ZOCOM- Task forces dedicated to operations in the Red zones, as well as their reclamation. Well ... slightly more ... promising results in their field compared to Steel Talons, which nicely shows that few, alterations in the arsenal overcome its shortcomings. Still, nothing too impressive compared to standard GDI forces.
      5) Navy- haven't seen too much of it, all we know is that NOD can't handle a stand-up fight with GDI Navy (No surprises there), but generally aren't that involved in ground campaigns aside from supporting GDI main with fire support, transportation or air support.
      As far as we have seen, what units in what companies are assigned is more on the field decision making rather than instituted in doctrine, and judging from world conquest mode in KW, GDI high command generally divides force on the ground into bases and strike forces. Bases secure locations, patrol regions, provide assistance to civilians, and are generally also production centers, strike forces meanwhile are mobile groups that are used in an offensive, defensive, or supportive manner, tho they are limited to a certain size, probably to allow them to operate far away from nearest supply depo.
      Most of this, however, boils down to what the local commander has in their arsenal and deems necessary for the mission, we build and yield, High command just passes general directions, and execution is usually down to officers on the ground. The space branch maintains itself and provides support, Navy does its own thing and sometimes helps the ground if HQ calls for it.

    • @Jethild

      I'm just going to repeat my reply to another comment on my Nod faction video that said a similar thing:
      No one can say with any real certainty which of the campaigns in RA1 leads to the Tiberium timeline. Back when Westwood owned the IP, Allies/GDI campaigns were always considered canon. And yes, this includes the Allies victory in RA1. The exception to this rule was Firestorm, as both GDI and Nod stories occur at the same time.
      Now EA owns the C&C IP. So the question is, which faction story does EA consider to be canon for RA1? Unfortunately, we don't have an answer to that, as they have never made any comment on it. Because of this, fan theories surrounding RA1 and it's endings have sprung up and all of them can be considered valid until EA says otherwise.
      For myself, I am not currently convinced by the theories of the Soviet victory leading to RA1. So for now, I default to Westwood's original take, which is that RA1 Allied victory is canon and leads to both the events of TD and RA2. It's okay if you don't agree with that. But at the moment that is the framing for all my C&C related lore videos.

      Unfortunately it's slow as heck. But if you attach a carry all to it and drop it off behind enemies while another group attacks from the flank, it can devastate enemy forces.

      In C&C3:KW, some part of the lore(one of the intel files) explains why you don't see the Mammoth MKII post firestorm. They were expensive AF and GDI had other problems to deal with, namely combating the spread of tiberium. Also, since the Brotherhood pulled another "we're splintered after Kane died" act at the end of Tib War Two having a supermassive walker around seemed like less of a priority. The intel also mentions that Nick "Havoc" Parker from Renegade protested their removal from production.
