- Hi Y'all.
Today I am talking about a phenomena that is universal, loneliness. If you are a human, then you have probably experienced loneliness at some point in your life.
Well you are not alone in those feelings of loneliness. Right now, the United States we are experiencing a loneliness epidemic. More people than ever are experiencing profound loneliness. So, I wanted to examine what loneliness is, what causes loneliness, and what can be done about it.

I was socially isolated before the pandemic throughout my teen years.
Yeah, I think a lot of the discourse about loneliness revolves around the pandemic, but the problem started long before that. I'm sorry you feel socially isolated, know that you are not alone in your feelings

Thank you! :) Glad you enjoyed.
I think it's mostly a problem of scale. We don't have the mental capacity to handle being in cities inhabited by millions of strangers. We try to find people whose interests and world views match with us, but this gets us tentative, optional connections at best. The theoretic existance of someone who agrees with us more deprives us from the motivation to find middle grounds with people around us, and this is where social media comes to make things worse.
We can look at small, close-knit communities where people have ties and obligations to one another that make them less lonely. This is not perfect though, as conforming to these social norms and obligations cuts away at our personal freedom. It's a difficult balance.
I speak on personal experience here: I come from a close-knit society (Middle East), where my feeling was of being suffocated by social norms and expectations. I'm now living in a more open and free society (Western Europe), and the feeling is that I'm lonely and replaceable.
