  • cold plunging is the worst thing you can do for your body if you’re already feeling stressed or overwhelmed 👇🏼
exposing an already stressed system to extreme cold exacerbates your body’s stress response, leading to more tension and anxiety 😮‍💨
the reason you do feel good after a cold plunge is because you body thinks you just survived a life or ⚰️ situation
if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you may notice symptoms like:
✨ an inability to relax or calm down
    ✨ shallow, rapid breathing
✨ persistent feelings of dread or panic
✨ difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
✨ muscle stiffness or pain, especially in the neck and shoulders
    ✨ irritability or short temper
✨ fatigue, yet feeling wired or jittery
    ✨ digestive discomfort or irregularities
cold plunging essentially perpetuates your body being stuck in survival mode 🤯
when you’re overwhelmed, your body needs warmth & gentle movements, not the shock of cold water 🥹
the good news is that there are alternative ways to soothe your stressed body 💖
you can calm your nervous system and create a sense of safety within your body with somatic exercises in 1-2 months 🥰
as you engage in these gentle exercises, you’ll begin to breathe more deeply and ease the tension as you release years of stress out of your body ✨
you’ll notice a newfound sense of peace, have more restful sleep, and feel more present in your daily life 🙌🏼
your body will shift from feeling overwhelmed to feeling grounded and capable 💪🏼
do you want to actually soothe your stressed nervous system without the extreme measure of cold plunging?

I wonder if this is why I’m obsessed with slurpees/frozen drinks when I’m stressed? It’d be sorta like an internal to external stress response feed back loop.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Your shorts always give me ah-ha moments and have helped start me on a journey of finally connecting my head to my body instead of my head floating around in a cloud of obligation and perfectionism, and my body just being dragged along into submission.

I personally found running an ice cube on my face or standing in a freezer or in front of my freezer helps regulate my disregulated moods and helps me act from a calm collected state. I do this on occasion as necessary. Ice plunges and using cold things like i mentioned above are a DBT coping skill. I have BPD and DBT therapy helps me manage my personality disorder. I'm not saying you have to use coping skills you don't like and there are other DBT skills. There are a lot of people who find this coping skill helpful like me.

Can you reference your sources? This makes me very confused as I have only found research saying that cold plunging reduces cortisol levels and my personal experience since I started cold plunging is a stabilizing of my mood, a significant reduction in panic attacks and less chronic pain. I do cold plunge and sauna, I don’t know if that makes a difference? 🙂

Where on your website? Found the article you wrote but no sources cited. I am really curious as I started doing this to get out of fight or flight and I thought it was working but if it can make things worse I would like to know.

100% agree with you. Using an ice plunge or just an ice cube on the face or walking into a freezer or opening the freezer door or just cooling my body down has helped me regulate my disregulated moods for years, so I can then make the best choices from a calm collected state instead of an activated and disregulated one. It's a DBT coping skill and it definitely helps people. I have BPD so DBT has helped me so much in managing my personality disorder. If a coping skill doesn't work for you that's cool but it definitely helps other people. There are so many DBT coping skills to choose from. I don't do an ice plunge often but only when it's necessary.

That makes sense. Is that for cold shower also? Only 30 seconds to 2 minutes, like the Wim Hof Method. I was thinking I would try that, but maybe not after seeing this video 🤔

I relate a lot to this comment, especially about HOF method. I've tried cold showers in the past, now I understand why they were not effective for me.

Just go with the breathing method at first, also, test your blood levels if you have high cortisol/stress. If you don’t have high stress levels, then cold water immersion/showers are actually really good for you
