- The timing belt was about due on the Alfa Romeo 156 and a water leak I suspected to be from the water pump forced the issue. Here I change the timing belt, balancer belt and water pump on this 1998 Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 TS.

I got all of the replacement parts from the Alfa Workshop in the UK. Great pricing and service.

My first time buying a car off Facebook Marketplace, and boy what a treat it turned out to be!
I'm planning on using this Alfa Romeo as a track day car, so it needs to be up to scratch maintenance-wise.
I buy my service parts from www.diycarserviceparts.co.uk/
The oil comes from Penrite

Just had to replace cyl head on my 156 after the water pump let go & cambelt tracked off the pulleys. Did all the belts & tensioners. Your video was excellent. Keep up the awesome work!
Duuude you are THE MAN, The best instruction video on youtube for the twinspark, Torque settings were invaliable, cant afford to take mine to the speacialist and my local mechanic keeps letting me down, enter the Badger to save the day. Thank you thank you.
Glad I could help and thanks for watching
Very helpful video and a very complicated engine
That's brilliant mate, I'm gonna give it a go on my 156 soon, thanks for the video! :)
Proper good job mate.
Very good - beautifully lit as usual and a smooth recovery from your minor mistakes. You can't ask for much better than that!
Thank you. I'm glad I was able to recover and not have to start over!
Great vid. Did this job on my 147 2.0 Selespeed as my local garages refused to touch it. I now know why. Took me all day, but it's done and it all works. Thanks for your channel. BTW, i used a long screwdriver for TDC.
Nice work, thank you for posting
Well done fella. I have been doing my 156 Selsepeed for the last 5yrs after rebuilding it. Once every two years and you be Good. Keep striving to Do.
Thanks!
My selespeed brother, how long you had yours, mine 20 years, had my flywheel lightened and its brilliant.
@@Zion-jw3gm Wow. Got mine in 2016 with a blown head gasket. Heavy head skim and head porting , inlet porting, CDA intake, Cam timing and straight thru 60mm to a DTM 3" DTM backbox. - 35mm springs with shorten 30% uprated shocks all round. EBC red brakes and Discs. Rebuilt Selespeed system and changed gearbox oil, new Cv's.
Gonna get Alfonso remapped in the Spring. Love it and never will sell it.

Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sooooooo jelouse pleaaase tell me how it rolls. I'm researching which engine builder to use. I had mine ported and gas flowed when I was using a rotrex supercharger. But I think this car works best NA.
So I'm taking your route already dropped suspension with Brembos all round and chassis improvements.
I have a taller 5th gear but without the SC can't take full advantage of it but still OK.
Sourced some cams not wild from Alfaholics better than the Italian brand.
I want to know if you managed to reprogram the gear box ecu shift points to match or did you just leave it.
Güzel video. Bu aracın kam kayışı değişimi ile ilgili en detaylı anlatım. Emeğin için teşekkürler.
Thanks
good luck dude
Loving the alfa content keep em coming, in the process of doing the clutch and slave on mine, belts are due tho
Wow, quite a job.
A bit involved but not too bad. Cheers buddy
I would love to like this video because it is very helpful and informative. However, it currently has exactly 156 likes and I don't want to be the person who breaks that.
A comment is worth a thousand likes 😊
Nice work looked like you had plenty of room to work with not too bad of a job by the looks well done pat on the back
Thanks buddy. Wasn't too bad of a job, just a bit different to what I'm used to.
Well done, great video, very very clear!
If you want, next time, you can consider putting some dielectric grease on the spark plugs caps, as it increases the life of the silicone :)
That's definitely not an easy job. Made in Germany, Canada and Italy but if you look on the back its actually made in China with foreign parts 😅😅 Nice to see Patrick, how did he manage to get a cockney accent in NZ ? Nicely done Johnathan top notch work 👍
Thanks buddy. It was a bit of work but quite satisfying. Patrick is growing up too quick, next week he'll be swinging spanners showing me how it's done 😂

Awesome video, mate! Going to have to do this job on my 1.6 TS 120hp 147 soon. What kind of bolts did you use to secure the locking tools on the camshafts? Thanks a lot for the video and your answer!
It's not quite clear how to adjust the cambelt tensioner correctly here. If the special T-Grip excenter tool is used, turn it to the maximum-tension position. Then turn the crankshaft 2 times to give the new belt a settling.
After that reduce the belt tension again since the arrowhead of the tensioner displays to the middle of the corresponding hole.
Otherwise the cambelt tension is too high attended with the danger to tear.
Regards
Do you know what is the torque specs of these cam caps?
Great video!
I'm pretty sure you can't adjust the exhaust cam pulley as it has a locating lug anyway. Only the intake pulley can move on the variator.
Amazing video.... congratulation!!! I have one 156 TS 2.0 1998-1999 w/ annoying noise coming from engine/ v-belt / pulley (I guess). I'm going to fix this.... Do you know the correct Poly-V Belt code to replace? 6PK1975 from Dayco? Other?Thank you!!!
Hi where can I by water pump and timing belt kit please?
Eccellente. I have a question about the torque of water pump. The correct torque is 20Nm?
R they rear wheel drive
Is the procedure the same in Alfa 156 2003 2.0 JTS 166 HK ?
Yes but you need different cam locks.
As far as I know the JTS does not have the balancer shafts, so it's simpler to do.
Whaaat Magneti Marelli is made in china???😮
кво толкова пъшкаш бе
Why you guys always think so complicated 😂
Untight the belts, put the new one on - end of story.
Just put marks on the position of each moving part….
Check on the bearings… water pump…. Every 5 years? - No!
Don’t spam back while knowing nothing about technology and the needs of it. Please 😂🎉🎉
🤣🤣🙈
Hello. Owner of a 2004 2.0 JTS 156. In my country you have 2 choices: go to the dealership or an Alfa Romeo expert (both €700+) or go to a normal garage and have them mess something up. You can’t even trust normal mechanics here to not mess up a spark plug change, let alone Alfa distribution.
I have learned to do pretty much everything on the car myself and want to do the timing belt on my 2.0 jts by myself. I’ll study the necessary efforts for 3 days and work on the car the whole day if I have to. But can anyone link me to a good 2.0 JTS timing belt instruction? I understand the basics but I need a nice overview thats’s beginner friendly. This video is great but I suppose 2.0 JTS is different
@@stefancgxz7799 maybe I did it too often… it’s pretty much the same as everywhere.
There might be an extra belt on the 2.0…
