I remember my mother sending me to the store to buy stockings .We lived in Newark. NJ. When my mother opened the package there was a picture of this beautiful brown woman on the cardboard that the stockings were wrapped around and I asked my mother who she was. My mother told me it was Eartha Kitt. This was 1954, I had never seen a Colored person (that is what we were called during that time) portrayed the way Eartha Kitt looked. I was in awe. I knew my mother was pretty, but she was mommy and didn't appear in stocking inserts. I asked lots of questions about Eartha Kitt and felt very proud that she was so glamorous. That was the beginning of my education that there were Negros that were more than what I had seen growing up in my neighborhood, which by the way was very diverse. Thank you Miss Kitt for educating me. I was a fan at age six from then on. Cecelia Harris Thomss
Yes, she was black-listed. As I remember, she was at a luncheon given by Lady Bird Johnson, and she spoke on the Vietnamese War and not in a positive way, and that is what they did to her.

Something is weird about this interview. Daughter seems detached. As if shes talking about "Eartha Kitt" the entertainer instead of talking about Eartha Kitt HER MOM... If she wasn't introduced as Eartha daughter I would have thought she was just a biographer.
@@@michellehunter2993 No, that was not a racist comment! YOU took it that way and brought colour into it. I agreed with Memyself (I'm back in to edit... What is Memyself? I can't have written that word, surely?) Kitt did come over as a biographer, and that's probably due to the job she has had and still has to do with/for her mother all these years. Kitt seems to be a lovely dignified person.
CarteBlanche I’ve felt like this-But I come to find out, no matter how much it doesn’t look smell or feel like it-yes indeed he is always right on time. The problem is our “right on time” is what we would call his late-but you have to remember he holds all of eternity, and he sees all things in the scope of eternity-so yes He is always right on time. It’s only a miracle if His time so happens to be also actually our time....But we might as well get comfortable knowing that things don’t happen in our time-they only happen in his time whether we like it or not. And the thing that can hurt? He’s right whether we like it or not.
There will never be another. Eartha Kitt . She was special, I loved her voice her singing and her presence. The days of all of the movies she played in, I had to watch all of them. A treat that was for me. I'll always remember her.💕💕💕
I had the pleasure off meeting Ms. Eartha when I was younger. She was absolutely breathtaking and magnetic in person. Kitt was blessed to born of her 💜
Eartha Kitt raised a wonderful daughter. I had such admiration for how she survived her abusive childhood. Loved her philosophy of life. Her natural Native genes and respect for the environment was way before we became important to the country. Every Christmas time they play her Santa Baby recording everyday in December on the radio. Kudos to her daughter Kitt.

Eartha Kitt was one classy lady & one worth being emulated by everyone, especially the current celebrities in politics & in Hollywood. I liked that incident that her daughter related about Eartha being thrown out of the amusement park & how she handled it in a very calm, interactive way & how she dealt with it in the press & turned it into something very positive. What a lovely & dignified lady she truly was !!!!!! There should be more of her type in this rude & ill-mannered world of these days!!!!!!
Exactly! She knew a long time ago that you can't reason with racists..but you can hit them where it hurts. Once his money was being affected, her skin color didn't matter so much. Excellent example. Love Ms. Kitt.
So glad I saw her in person 3x in San Francisco once at a nightclub I think on Polk St. and 2 x at the Timbuktu performance. At one performance of Timbuktu it was raining terribly hard during and after the performance. At the end of the show we were told to leave the theater and get on the street near the stage door. There were scores of people waiting to see her but she didn't know we were on the street. She found us standing outside in the wet, cold, weather and she threw a fit. She told the crew that we were her fans, she opened all the doors, and all of us stumbled back into the warm theater. She sure gave those workers a shellacking. Strangely, she remembered me from her nightclub act months before. She was the best live performer I have had the privilege to see and I've seen dozens. Bless you Ms Eartha.

The interviewer was given an amazing story about Eartha Kitt experiencing her first example of indoor plumbing told beautifully, but she totally missed the importance of that moment for Eartha. I hope I can find more videos of her daughter sharing her memories. She’s a great storyteller.

My grandmother talked to us about it and other things of that nature, of things of how it was during the early decades of the 1900s.
Kamilla Harris black people in America don’t have the power to exercise systematic racism but we most definitely can say racist things. Take Jess Hilarious for example she said something Xenophobic and racist about an Indian man wearing his traditional head gear when she was on a plane. But when it comes to predominantly black countries they can most definitely be systematically racism such as South Africa. They have something similar to affirmative action where only Black South Africans are benefiting from it and white South Africans are not. But that’s a whole different discussion seeing how everything played out with apartheid and everything.

I did see her in movie such as "Anna Lucasta", but I remember back in the day, I saw her onstage in Detroit, Michigan, in a Broadway Musical called "Timbuktu" Oh, my God, the entrance she made! There was a whole PARADE! Horn playing men, dancing girls, and all that for several minutes, but all these big beautiful, muscular black men, half-naked and in long floor length skirts with bared chests and gold paint smeared all over their bodies, came in CARRYING her and when she moved to get down, a man knelt ond the floor in front of her and she stepped down from the arms of those men to the back of the kneeling man, to the floor, swung her own long floor-length skirt around her, slid her leg out and said: "I'm HEERRE." And the audience went WILD!!! It was the best entrance I had ever seen in my life and it is the only moment I really think of when I think of her. I just felt that that entrance was so worthy of the woman that she was. I thank God I had the opportunity to see her on stage.
I loved this listening to Kitt talk about her moms’ life and who she was!! As a little girl, Eartha Kitt always mesmerized me with her beauty and voice. I thought she was so unique. She was a beautiful woman. I thank God for sharing her with us.

I own a documentary called Brown Sugar: Eighty Years of America's Black Female Superstars, narrated by Billy D. Williams. Eartha Kitt is one of the superstars who talked about her life, and there are movie clips of the stars. When I first saw Eartha Kitt I was captivated when I heard her sing in French. She was amazing! I remember seeing Eartha Kitt and Kitt when Kitt was a small child. It's good to see her as an adult and to know that she appreciates her mother. To the host: light skin has never been better than dark skin. That's a LIE that whites made up. Study Albinism versus melanin.
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT DID HER AUNT SAY TO HER WHEN SHE FINALLY SEEN SHE WAS SITTING IN THE BATHROOM ON THE TUBE WAITING IN FEAR!!! Ugh!!! Why did the interviewer cut her off like that! I'm sure she looks back at the video and see the mistake she made now! Those are the stories her fans want to hear... at least I do...
Sohpine, I wanted Kitt to be able to speak uninterrupted too, but an interviewer's job is to keep the interview moving and on topic. Not that Kitt was rambling, but they had limited time and certain points had to be covered. There are excerpts of Eartha Kitt interviews where you just want to sit at her feet and listen to her all day, but alas . . . Guess I'll have to buy the books.
She was definitely true to her name "Of the Earth. One of Hollywood's most memorable Divas. Her grandeur and balance of weighing right fom wrong. Her reasoning abilities in knowing healing was in the hands of the Almighty! She was truly purrrrfect! in more ways than one. In intellect and physical demeanor. She was a creative expression of the Earth. Gamour at it's best!
It saddens me to say, but even if we we’re the same color...and we will be some day....we’d probably still find another stupid reason to divide ourselves. When will we evolve?

Eartha Kitt, what a CLASS ACT!!!! And how lovely- "I am Eartha, this is Kitt..." Because she COMPLETES HER!!!! WOW!!!!
I wish i knew that type of mother/daughter relationship

Eartha Kitt was one of the most fascinating female personas in history. She was mesmerizing.
Jervisdude I loved her voice! Great Diction! 👌👌👌
They never brought up Eartha being blacklisted! An interesting situation that occurred in her life.
Yes, she was black-listed. As I remember, she was at a luncheon given by Lady Bird Johnson, and she spoke on the Vietnamese War and not in a positive way, and that is what they did to her.
I'm sure it's in her book
why was she black lisited
Amen! Eartha Kitt was treated so badly during her life, but she was so brave, resilient, resolute.
Also sad that her daughter at one time disowned her own mother. It broke her mother's heart ..so fake !!!
I am truly and Eartha Kitt fan but I wonder why the moderator ask the question do she feel like she is better than her mom because her mom was half black. Wow it never seems to stop
That let's you know what she thinks. Any question like that isnt even worthy of a response.
Something is weird about this interview. Daughter seems detached. As if shes talking about "Eartha Kitt" the entertainer instead of talking about Eartha Kitt HER MOM... If she wasn't introduced as Eartha daughter I would have thought she was just a biographer.
That is a racist comment.
@@@michellehunter2993 No, that was not a racist comment! YOU took it that way and brought colour into it.
I agreed with Memyself (I'm back in to edit... What is Memyself? I can't have written that word, surely?)
Kitt did come over as a biographer, and that's probably due to the job she has had and still has to do with/for her mother all these years. She has had to tell these stories so many times that there is no room for the emotion which would have shown if this was the first or second time she would have spoken about her mother. Kitt seems to be a lovely dignified person.
I noticed that, too!
“He may not come when you want him but he’ll be there right on time”
@@nadyarossi5102 Not true.
The interviewer is horrible.. She should be quite Let Kit talk. The daughter is amazing. Get rid of the interviewer
CarteBlanche I’ve felt like this-But I come to find out, no matter how much it doesn’t look smell or feel like it-yes indeed he is always right on time. The problem is our “right on time” is what we would call his late-but you have to remember he holds all of eternity, and he sees all things in the scope of eternity-so yes He
is always right on time. It’s only a miracle if His time so happens to be also actually our time....But we might as well get comfortable knowing that things don’t happen in our time-they only happen in his time whether we like it or not. And the thing that can hurt? He’s right whether we like it or not.
Amen!
I thought I was the only one who found the interviewer's tone very cutting.
Cutting. That's the word I was looking for.
Beautiful mum. Beautiful daughter. Life really goes on.
She was bigger than light so she think? What kind of a statement is that. That interview is horrible
There will never be another. Eartha Kitt . She was special, I loved her voice her singing and her presence. The days of all of the movies she played in, I had to watch all of them. A treat that was for me. I'll always remember her.💕💕💕
Kitt's business revolves around her mom's legacy. I think it's really amazing.
Wow. I'd like to see an interview where Kitt can speak freely.
Same here
How much time do you have?
Who the heck asks Eartha Kitts daughter, "How did your mom learn to purr!"Who the heck asks such a question?
IDK maybe she's a fan of Eartha as Catwoman.
Lmaoo
Idiots
She was amazing as catwoman, and really could purr like no other catwoman out there...
Tony Turner you are an asshole.
I had the pleasure off meeting Ms. Eartha when I was younger. She was absolutely breathtaking and magnetic in person. Kitt was blessed to born of her 💜
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing
Orson Welles said that Eartha Kitt was the most exciting woman he'd ever met.
Not a good interviewer. I wanted to hear all the stories
What an articulate interview. Kitt's love for her Mom was so lovingly shared with us. I loved your Mom too!
Eartha Kitt is a legacy and very talented lady. Her daughter is also a lovely person that is a product of an amazing mother. Many blessings for you.
Ann Nyberg could use interviewing training.
Resabout B. You are correct. Hope she learns. Doubt it thought
She is just racist low key...

Absolutely, Ann needs training in how to interview.

Lovely interview. I'm forever an Eartha fan and so glad to know her child will keep her legacy going.
Bad interviewer, keeps interrupting in middle of the stories, she lacks so much to be interviewing this woman with this remarkable story, that's my opinion,,,peace
Eartha and her daughter are lovely
Eartha Kitt is my cousin. She's on my mother's side of the family.
What an amazing lady. 🤗
We may be related then. She’s my cousin on my maternal grandfather’s side.

Peaceful Waters she is not local to me. I know that she is family and how she is related to me. I’ve known all my life. Never thought about seeking her out.

Love Ms. Kitt.
Lovely interview. It's a delight to see Kitt paying tribute to her Mom and speaking againt colon cancer. I wish her much success with her company.
I've always been a fan. Her daughter's stories made me love her even more. I'm so happy that I found this. Thanks for posting.
Bless you Ms Eartha.
this is the true spirit of her mother in her. I'm a South African and I am so touched and inspired . May her soul rest in peace.
When God is with you there is nothing or no one that can stop you from getting what he has for you God was with eartha when every one is against you it makes you want to give up she didn't God thank you.
The interviewer is condescending. On learning languages: How did she DO that ? (you know, as a black woman and all)
Oh come on. That is not what she was saying. She was saying how did she do that as something like that is impressive to do by ANY. I would be impressed if a little white woman who learned all those languages as well. Languages are not easy to learn, yet alone knowing MANY of them.
The interviewer was a little ignorant to me
Yes! She kept taking little jabs. "Of which YOU don't own the royalties to." Kitt corrects her and she says, "Oh good." How about, I apologize for my ignorance. Thanks for the correction.🌹
@@calibabii1106 That is because you misunderstood her. She wasnt saying it because she was black. She was saying it because of the odvious. It is impressive for ANYONE to learn all those languages on her own. Let me ask. Would it have been different if it was a black interviewer saying the exact same thing. I think there would be a whole lot of complaints if it was one of our own.
@M Lane The only thing this was was a misunderstanding. We (black people) tend to over analyze thing because of the race issues. Doesnt mean every situation is like that. If this was a black interviewer saying the EXACT same things they would have though nothing of it.
Eartha was such a G. I wish I could have met her .
This was so interesting to watch. Most people that is different and unique is usually abused because they have a special calling on their lives.
I'm so happy Eartha Kitt's aunt sent for her. Great interview.👍

She does sound a lot like her mother! Her story of their racist experiences in South Africa was brilliantly told. Eartha was much an inspiration and overcame so much hardship. She'd so proud of Kitt Shapiro and the great work she does in preserving her legacy :)

The interviewer was given an amazing story about Eartha Kitt experiencing her first example of indoor plumbing told beautifully, but she totally missed the importance of that moment for Eartha. I hope I can find more videos of her daughter sharing her memories. She’s a great storyteller.
When I hear the backstory of such an iconic figure and the struggles they had to endure, it makes me admire them even more.
The interviewer has a look to her that she really could care less. Very condescending smirking and phony face.
Kitt has a more natural look and expressions.
15:35 I'm not saying screaming from a soapbox is never called for, but we could certainly use more of Eartha's wise approach to things these days.
Being a parent is the single most important thing a person can do.
Raising a smart, very articulate daughter who shows a great deal of love for her mother. Eartha is still amazing, her music always puts a smile in my heart...a fun voice, she had a great deal of class and humor, delivered with heart.
Such a beautiful relationship between mother and daughter!!!!
I remember Eartha Kitt from my youth, and I had no idea she had such a dynamic character and beautiful daughter carrying on her legacy. This was a wonderful interview for Mother's Day!

She said Eartha she was not accepted by blacks in her neighborhood. But, that was a requirement by a lot of Black parents in that era. No darker than a paper bag.

I agree for that time...Class act🌹
@@justinepeabody4534 The paper bag thing.... was for dancers n the Harlem night clubs. The Dancers were lights skinned black women....while the audience was white.
Cynthia Biel sorry no......if you know any Black people over 70, ask them. Southern blacks that are over 70, will tell you, it was not just for dancers. I love talking to my neighbors, a married couple over 75 about such things. My grandmother talked to us about it and other things of that nature, of things of how it was during the early decades of the 1900s.
I'm not racist but the person conducting this interview is a bit odd. Every time I watch an interview about eartha kit I hear jabs
I saw what you mean too. And no, that's recognizing racism, not being racist.
What? You must NOT know the definition of racism. Blacks have no collective power to exercise racism
@@Lostinmyhead23 ...you are very typical....lost and confused is what you sound like...probably don't like other black people, it's easy to tell by your comments, esp. the last one on S. Africa...i sincerely hope i'm wrong
Gregory Hill en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Economic_Empowerment here stupid! Like I said it’s similar to affirmative action. If you don’t believe wiki I’m pretty sure you can find other articles on it.
Kitt is a wonderful daughter for sharing and keeping her mother's memory alive.💕🙏
I'm so happy to have found this! I love Eartha Kitt! I remember seeing her in the Batman movies as a child. My mother loved her too and we would talk about how wonderfully unique and mesmerizing she was! What a beautiful soul. It's an inspiration to see her daughter carry on the story. 💕
I did see her in movie such as "Anna Lucasta", but I remember back in the day, I saw her onstage in Detroit, Michigan, in a Broadway Musical called "Timbuktu" Oh, my God, the entrance she made! There was a whole PARADE! Horn playing men, dancing girls, and all that for several minutes, but all these big beautiful, muscular black men, half-naked and in long floor length skirts with bared chests and gold paint smeared all over their bodies, came in CARRYING her and when she moved to get down, a man knelt ond the floor in front of her and she stepped down from the arms of those men to the back of the kneeling man, to the floor, swung her own long floor-length skirt around her, slid her leg out and said: "I'm HEERRE."
And the audience went WILD!!!
It was the best entrance I had ever seen in my life and it is the only moment I really think of when I think of her. I just felt that that entrance was so worthy of the woman that she was. I thank God I had the opportunity to see her on stage.
Beautiful story. The power of love. Amazing story

I loved this listening to Kitt talk about her moms’ life and who she was!! As a little girl, Eartha Kitt always mesmerized me with her beauty and voice. I thought she was so unique. I had never seen anyone like her on tv. She was definitely one of a kind! Even tho she had a hard life from the beginning, she persevered and had a different and much better life. This was an excellent interview, and extremely glad to see Kitt's expectant of who she was. Kudos
I love Eartha Kitt. She really was a great woman. A Shero i admire.
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT DID HER AUNT SAY TO HER WHEN SHE FINALLY SEEN SHE WAS SITTING IN THE BATHROOM ON THE TUBE WAITING IN FEAR!!!

I agree. I too wanted to hear the rest of the story. bitch interviewer.
Not as important and some other points perhaps.
Her daughter is an amazing women! Talkin so highly of her mother as she should
