There's a part in "Hannah and Her Sisters" where Mia Farrow as Hannah does a voice over about her parents saying, "They loved the idea of having us, they just weren't interested in raising us." Perhaps that applies here.

nylrob I have read Soon Yi Previns response to Mia Farrow talking about Woody Alan and she describes her as a good mother only for her biological children. She said the adopted children were virtually ignored or misstreated. So I see some irony there.

@@monmothma3358 well these women were being abused behind the scenes. It doesn’t justify, but it does explain. You also have to put yourself in that time frame. Hollywood was the first industry that allowed women to be big players in the financial sector. Before movies women hardly worked. If women did work it was usually as seamstresses or cooks or maids. If women had a lot of money and because they are inherited or they married into it. Hollywood was the first industry that really depended on women as much as they depended on men to become a really big financial superpower. That means they were the first women who had to figure out a balance between home life and work life. Because of the mistakes these women made women of today have a better understanding and a better balancing act on home life and work life. Everything isn’t black and white. What these women did to their children was terrible but everything has a silver lining. Because what they did for society is super valuable.

He trotted Sachi out to meet the grown-ups, remarking right in front of her that she was a homely little girl just like her mother. They seek love and attention themselves. Trying to fill a void. OH SHIRLEY, love your daughter. Know your grandchildren. Shirley, if your looking for answers, look towards your daughter and your grandchildren. You might find that one major VOID, is that of your own immediate family. I've always liked you Shirley. Speaking as someone who had this kind of relationship with her own mother, I have to wonder why these women choose to have children when they know very well they are too selfish to be there emotionally for them? It's all about vanity and I believe the most responsible thing I have ever done is NOT have children. I don't want to put my child through what I went through. In the book Shirley talked about sitting in a circle with an African tribe and it read as if she had a true egalitarian sensibility toward humankind. And then I waited on her and two gentlemen one night: NO ONE has ever made me feel more like gum on the bottom of their shoe than Shirley. She was dismissive and rude toward me. I still think she is a fantastic actress, but it does not stretch my imagination AT ALL to believe her daughter's account of her as a mother.

When, at the age of 47, I finally confronted my father about his abuse, including sexual abuse, he only said "You don't want to get into a pissing contest with me, little missy". No apology. Only inferring that he knew things about me that he could tell if I dared say anything about him! I was 14 the last time I lived with him! What could he possibly say about a 14 yr old girl? My mother did say she was sorry I had not real parenting about a month before she died. That did give me some closure with her. The point is, if they acknowledge any abuse towards you, it will be because you "deserved" it. I often wonder why my parents had me. I had a brother who was the golden child. I was the scapegoat. I'm going to buy your book tonight and read it. I wonder if your uncle, Warren Beatty, has anything to do with you or acknowledges how you were treated by his sister?

I understand why lots of these stars' kids write these types of books, it's because they are trying some way to 'get through' to their mothers once ad for all. I'm 55 and I have just about given up on trying to ever get through to my mother. She was incredibly abusive towards me and still is and refuses to change or even see the damage she has done. People can easily say get over it or move on but severe trauma and abuse leave a residue that never goes away unless a person represses it and that's never a good idea to do. Sadly, abusers rarely if ever change or acknowledge what they've done, it just doesn't happen. Abusers all seem to be just 100% ego and little else, that is why they are abusers, they are incapable of empathy or remorse.

Creata Ann Why do people write novels? Memoirs? Biographies? Autobiographies? Etc. Because most people want to be heard, and share their grief, sorrow, sadness, happiness, regrets, hopes, ideas, thoughts, feelings, achievements...etc.
Her book is not something out of the ordinary, it's just her memoirs and thoughts, there are many other books like that. So you're saying that people shouldn't have to write about how they feel or think just because it's inappropriate somehow? And what if a bunch of strangers want to read what other human being wants to say about themselves, their story? Well, guess what? A bunch of strangers did want to read her book because of empathy or maybe even curiosity.
Her story is not unique either, generations over generations of humans would keep making the same mistakes over and over again, probably. And there will always be someone out there who feels like you do, and wants to read you, or hear you.
And people need money, everyone does, you can't live without it, sadly. So why not sell your creations? Painters do it, writers do it, actors do it...you get the point. I don't see the problem in her trying to make money with that book.
