    One of the most interesting life stories I've ever heard. Can you imagine the internal struggles that Eartha had to go through in order to feel confident enough to be who she was while on this Earth, all the while, being treated like a rag doll by most people she encountered... That's called sacrifice and transformation! When you listen to the stories of your elders and ancestors, great knowledge and wisdom, such as this can be attained!

      I didn't think her tone was rude..Yes, she was in belief and obviously DIDN'T APPROVE of food being thrown at her. But I wonder if this boy did so , thinking he couldn't hand her food coz that would show kindness & get in trouble. Maybe he threw it at her so she'd have some sustenance while working hard. I don't think she was ready to tell her off, I think she was angry recalling how she was mistreated but was abandoned by her own family and abused by the person who end up raising her (her aunt ). Maybe the mother was attractive and the legit wife of the possible rapist (innocent til proven guilty) had her real mother send away. The way Eartha describes her mother sounded like she was attractive and tall. The Germans who were looking for her were obviously accepting of her, thinking she was their kin and she mentioned the white boy on the plantation "knew" (in reference to her being part white). it's sad the black church didn't accept ilegit children...back then, they thought they'd be going to hell for being ilegit or "a bastard." The then president was driven to tears by Eartha's speech against the war. later went to Europe and Asian where she was accepted. Both marriages she had were to white men. There were plenty of whites who saw Blacks as real people and some did love them. She went on the learn French, German and a few other languages. She was a super intelligent lady and hated the actions of certain people and was against racism and discrimination of any kind from all she lived! That's what intelligent people do...they don't turn around and behave in the same negative way they were treated.

    During a time period when illegitimacy was a serious offense. The darker hued children could hide it. No one would know unless you told them or unless they knew your family history. Lighter complexioned or biracial children, no matter where they lived in the south could not hide their illegitimacy. Everyone knew, just by looking at you that your parents were not and could not marry.

    Most likely the interviewer is ignorant and cannot get her head around the fact that a lighter skinned African American could face discrimination and rejection from the African American community... and that is the same mentality that started the cycle of denial that poor defenseless Eartha Mae found herself in. Thank God she managed to crawl out of that world and inspire us all!

      +Euro-African Interviewer just trying doing her job to get all detail straight up, without messing every detail in one big pot under name of the "discrimination"! its obvious that it was decriminalization, but there so much details in the culture that time, why it should be ignored? And the facts of the story it self. By the way-about discrimination- I'm white immigrant in the USA- and I was discriminated many time by blacks-"African-americans" in modern time. And 'm sick and tired hearing all the time as blacks here without any reason pressing the race card!

    • @Eurafrican
      @Eurafrican 9 років тому +4

      Brant Brant not just blacks that play the race card as you know. My point was the interviewer sounded like she was questioning the authenticity of Eartha's story, which is disrespectful. This isn't a police interrogation.

    • @brantbrant4035
      @brantbrant4035 9 років тому

      Maybe not "only" blacks, but most of them, by my observation. I was surprised to see how they are treating others, even blacks from Africa, by continuously pulling attention on this subject ..most of the time just dragging attention from the problems, or their responsibility.... About interviewer side- It is important to understand exactly what does person who gives interview is saying...this is why she was re-asking her over and over..I could not draw a whole picture by short sentence which Mrs. Eartha was using do describe her experience. Questions and answers helping to add more details to the story. You just see there what you want to see..disrespect... I saw just professional work.

    What an awful existence for any human being to be treated as subhuman as Eartha Kitt was. She really went through a lot, and for her to be able to speak of her experiences with such candor and clarity says a lot for her inner strength, as well as her gifts of mental clarity and perspective. People today tend to see lighter skinned Blacks as somehow more "successful", "lucky", and more "acceptable", but this is not necessarily the case. The color thing is so twisted and perverted, and it explains why so many talented Black people of all hues gravitated towards lives and careers in Europe where color is not such a big deal. Europeans do have their racial issues as well, but they are not as pronounced as in the USA.

    Who is the interviewer? She is so ignorant and rude that it is truly upsetting! I am so upset that Madam Momma Eartha Kitt had to endure such lack of respect someone as disrespectful and disgusting as the woman interviewing her. Whoever she is, she should be ashamed of herself. Mother conducted herself as the respectable intelligent goddess that she will always be. On Earth as she is in Heaven.

      I think she’d be overjoyed at the progress we have made in the acceptance and understanding of others. No matter their skin tone or gender or sexuality. She’d probably also be disappointed in the young people and their belief that racism and sexism are worse than they ever have been, believing that everyone that is white is a nazi and are setting back society by 40 years.

    • @themarbleking
      @themarbleking 5 років тому +6

      Probably the same as what she thought then. To be black in America still feels like you’ve died and gone to hell. And to be Native American! You only really feel good about the country if you’re white.

    • @themarbleking
      @themarbleking 5 років тому +5

      AMANDA WOOD. It’s called EMPATHY. Something that seems to be sadly lacking in many european Americans. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. America is not a Paradise for blacks or the natives since Europeans decided to act like wankers. And that they continue to do so without conscience is very sad. If she was alive today she would still have faced the same discriminations, whether she was shopping, driving, walking, anything! You don’t get it so you think it‘s non existent? I’m a man and I know women are treated like shit the world over. Should I deny that just because it doesn’t happen to me?

    • @themarbleking
      @themarbleking 5 років тому +1

      AMANDA WOOD. It’s easy! There is only really one race of people. That’s why we can and do interbreed. Your dna is African as well as Neanderthal as is everyone’s. If you can’t feel for others what are you? An alien?

    It would have driven me absolutely nuts to not know where I came from. This woman overcame so much. I know not everyone had the grit of this woman, but she is inspirational. She came from nothing, but she had audiences with great leaders of her time. Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth...We can't all achieve eminence, and we don't need to, but we need to all do the best we can with what we have, where we are, for however long we are stuck there. Your past doesn't have to hold you back. She easily could have died in the gutter somewhere, having achieved nothing. I was in jail recently and met my first meth addict, who was likely also making and selling meth. I felt so sorry for her. She didn't admit to the charge of having drugs for resale, but she also didn't admit to using meth, although she was covered with scabs. A girl on there for her second DUI offense readily accepted responsibility for her actions. She was there because of the choices she had made. She's just lucky she didn't kill anyone. People don't think about how their choices can hurt others, and they don't even think about how they are hurting themselves. I wish there were easy answers. I told them that I didn't have any substance abuse problems, but I had struggled with emotional problems. All of these things boil down to self-control issues. We all have something we struggle with or else that we should. Pride is a big one, as my preacher talked about this last Sunday.

    I think the woman who raised her in New York was her sister.. Looked like her but older, cold towards her, didn't speak much about their relation. Maybe she was one of the children of the plantation owner's son. That, to me, would greatly explain that woman's attitude. "They sent another rape child of my mother to live with me?" Is how I'm thinking that goes.
