Know for her role as Catwoman on Season 3 of the Batman TV Series.

Her early life was more than difficult. For her to overcome this, have success and raise a daughter, is amazing and should be respected.
We also look into the time President Lyndon Baines Johnson, LBJ had her blacklisted from Hollywood, after she made the First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson Cry.

She had to have been an incredibly strong woman to have survived such a horrific childhood. For every Eartha Kitt, there are hundreds of women in that situation that don't survive it. If not for her aunt, we'd probably not know her at all. She was an amazing woman.

I never knew this about her childhood. My mother introduced me to her in the 70's. I first saw her on tv playing cat woman on batman. As an adult l moved to the west coast where l got a chance to see her perform at a supper club twice. She was amazing, and a true trailblazer and legendary.

One of the best "survivor" stories I've ever heard. Eartha Kitt was someone special and clearly shows how a person with integrity and passion CAN make a difference. The world needs more Eartha Kitts (good job cool classics)
I'm very moved after hearing the life story. The way Ms. Kitt was treated as a child, yet got through it, shows the strength of character.
Her Auntie was a pretty great lady too!
I love this survivor story because it was a black girl being rescued by a black woman, you know the way it always works, not how hollywood portrays it with a lily white man or woman. This was the real stuff.

She made a big mistake however in being against the US in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh murdered many thousands of his North Vietnamese in a deadly land reform in the 1950s. Even Ken Burns showed this in the former's book. Kitt was not perfect!

Eartha was my favorite Catwoman, she had a big personality and was very catlike. I never knew about the hardships she faced and what a terrible young life. But it didn’t break her thank God. Rest In Peace Eartha Kitt. So glad you always spoke the truth.

After the CIA surveillance of her became public, Eartha did return to Broadway. When she was carried onto the stage at the start of her first performance, she was not only given a standing ovation but many in the audience swarmed into the aisles and rushed towards the stage to applaud her. She was loved by many.
I mainly knew her from Batman. Hearing about her past, and hearing about her fights for Civil Rights, I see she grew into a literal Titan walking among mortals.

As a retired US history teacher I obviously appreciate all the work you have put into the Julie Numar and Ertha Kitt bios presented here. I especially enjoy your very professional and yet human way of narration. You don't make yourself the subject of your presentation; but sticking to the facts and selecting (which must be very difficult to do) the relevant ones to provide to make your thesis clear and impactful. Aunt Mamie was the stand out hero here for me. But Eartha took that opportunity and sprinted with it. A beautiful real life example of the hero's journey!
Yes and don't forget the original hero was the relative who took mercy on her and wrote that letter begging her Aunt Mamie to take her in .

I met Eartha twice in the 90s. At her shows she would request men (often starstruck gays like me) to be seated close to the stage, so she could sing and flirt with them. She sang a song in German in one of her shows with a spot light on me in the balcony. I barely held it together and will never forget it. It pains me to hear of her early life. Despite that she became someone we can all be proud of. Thank you so much for making this video.
I seen Eartha Kitt in concert many years ago, in Seattle (The Moore theater). I forget exactly what year, about 1989. I remember her doing just what you said. She was incredible! Especially singing that one song with the spot light on her, as she danced around and walked back and forth across the stage. That song she sang was called "Have Nagila". An old traditional Jewish song. The best, and most enjoyable version I have ever heard from anyone. It was incredible.
Certainly no one deserved success more than Eartha.

What an amazing woman! I am convinced that some of the people most abused and tried in this life are some of the most spiritually gigantic souls. I had so much respect for her even before watching this because of her "always speak the truth" mentality; now I respect her even more after getting a glimpse into her journey. From what I understand we decide if we want to come back to this earth as if we were choosing to play a video game. Some spirits are just here to support others and some are here to have their own journeys. Some of those that are on their own journeys have decided to challenge themselves to see how much they can hold on to their spirituality even under the worst circumstances. I think she must have been one of them

Eartha's Aunt Mamie was a wonderful inspirational woman, taking in Eartha as a child and introducing her to a meaningful variety in education and the arts. What a lucky child to have such a great woman to take her in. No wonder Eartha loved her and made sure she showed that love and respect in adopting Mamie's surname. I really enjoyed this narrative, thank you so much.
They could make a movie about this beautiful and sad and inspiring story of her life. What a raw talent she was. RIP Eartha. ❤️🙏❤️

I met Eartha in a tiny club in Calgary.

Wow! This story of E. Kitt had me cheering and crying at the same time. What woman and the things she went through growing up. Good bless Aunt Mami for saving her life and shame on those who tormented her. Thank you for tell8ng this wonderful story of this great woman.
Amazing. Always liked her in Batman, always thought she was beautiful and had an absolutely perfect figure, but never knew about any of her early life, or how she overcame it. 5 languages, at least? A literal genius on top of it all, just amazing. Oh, and Santa Baby is one of the sexiest songs of all time, made at a time when sexuality had to be conveyed entirely through innuendo.
Actually, "Santa Baby" came out the same year that Playboy magazine started (1953).

Wow, what an incredible person Earths Kitt was!!! Little did I know what she persevered through when I watched Batman reruns as a child. You do fantastic work and I can't thank you enough. This expose on Earths Kitt is so powerful and there is much more you couldn't include. A huge thank you to her aunt for saving Eartha's life.
You forgot to mention her extraordinary role in the hit play, Timbuktu in 1978. I met her in person while waiting outside the stage door! What a remarkable presence!

Don’t assume that he forgot. Eartha Kitt had a very long, very active life. She did a lot of things. Even if the video was hours long he wouldn’t be able to include everything.

I'm 76, so she has been a vague figure for most of my life, but this really put some meat on the bones.
I was a child in the 50s but Eartha was one of my favorite singers back then. She was also my favorite Cat Woman. Eartha's story is a great testimony of overcoming great odds while maintaining personal integrity
Her voice was perrrrrrrrfect for Catwoman! She was so much more, her singing the best, her beauty. Loved her!

I didn't know she was part Native American. She makes me so proud cause I'm from the Hopi Tribe jn Arizona and i love the way she dtood her ground eith truth and knew when to use for her advantage to make great changes. What she said to Lady Byrd Johnson was sooo true about our young sons being recruited or drafted for the wars and put on the frontlines to fight. The President couldn't handle the truth and blacklisted Eartha but she was patient and smart so in the end it all came out and made him look like a fool. He's one President i didnt like.
You missed the chance to highlight her introduction to new generations as Izma from Emperor's New Groove. She practically stole the show with her perfectly delivered lines. She really did shine whatever she did.
I've never been to or heard of this channel before. Holy smokes, this was one hell of an intro. Outstanding job my friend as I was a fan of Eartha Kitt as a kid. One of my favorite movies with her was the one she did with Nat King Cole. She truly embodied what I consider, "A REAL WOMAN." God rest her soul.

She is actually my grandfather's half sister, they were the same age. They had a big farm but it wasn't a cotton farm. My great-grandfather was the postmaster in North South Carolina. Also, the actress Lois Collier is her cousin.
I used to date Lois, we both acted in the Dirty Harry series with Clint Eastwood.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary on Eartha Kitt and admittedly got quite angry upon learning some of the struggles she went through which should have never happened. I will always remember that cat purr of hers. An amazing woman indeed.
My Mom went to school with Eartha Kitt! It was called the New York School of Performing Arts. Mom would always wake me up when Eartha was a guest on the Johnny Carson show, she just adored the way Eartha would slink, like a cat, across the stage, dragging her gorgeous fur coat behind her. When Eartha would lie about her age, Mom would just chuckle, because she knew she was fibbing, lol!!

I would always pray that tonight's episode would have her in it!! then my father found out and called me a bunch of racist names and her a bunch of names and I just didn't know why I was beaten for falling in love with this beautiful women. dear god after seeing this video, I love her even more! When I was ,10 ,1963, grandma took me to Washington ,DC..One night she took me to a nightclub to see Eartha Sing.We sat at a front table..small club.Eartha sang to me and even gave me a kiss on my cheek I will never forget that sultry voice. And that kiss.

I was a kid watching Batman and that purr of hers was chilling, I really believed she had claws and knew how and when to use them, and now I see that's true in her life too, not just as Catwoman. Did anyone else notice that the Catmobile also purred 31:23?
I remember the Smothers Brothers getting cancelled by CBS in 69 because they refused to stop criticizing Nixon and Viet Nam. It was the summer of love, but also another summer of fighting a no-win unpopular war that just wouldn't end. I had already lost an Uncle serving over there.
That was a shame Smother Brothers got cancelled, it was a really good show and they did not fear to speak truth to power either. Maybe an idea for a future episode?

What an incredible life story. This goes to show you nothing in life happens by accident. It’s remarkable that she was able to overcome the childhood trauma that she endured. What a beautiful, educated, strong women she became because of her aunt that gave her a voice and a platform along with the means to develop into an amazing women.
Her childhood is so terrible it almost made my eyes water. It's so sad, she faced prejudice for being a mixed race, and was forced to work as a child. She was truly lucky, and blessed to later on have a better, and successful life. Her aunt really saved her life.
She was also very intelligent, and talented, and despite the media hit pieces against her, (I guess "fake news" always existed) and Hollywood blacklisting her for awhile, she contributed alot to society. A truly wonderful, and talented woman.

I remember watching her on talk shows of the late '60s and early '70s and she was always really interesting and provocative...and talented! But to hear about how she had to struggle...WOW! Thank you. This is one of the stories we need to hear these days. A woman who put truth first and dealt with everything as it came, who, while finding what felt right for herself, never forgot to aid others as she went. Someone who faced all the sexism and racism, who took the results of her stands in stride but never forgot to look for when she could make a difference, and who held her head up high and proud. Despite a completely different (and far less difficult) path, there are a lot of lessons I can take from her life. Thank you for reminding us of this beautiful person and her meaningful life. Peace.

Excellent video. I had no idea about Eartha Kitt's history and all that she had to overcome. My main memories were from watching Batman as a child. I did have the privilege to see her perform in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies" performed in London's West End - back in the 80's. She was extraordinarily talented. I was a child when Eartha was very popular and I remember watching her perform on TV. She has an amazing life story, very sad and heartwrenching. Eartha was a very beautiful Lady inside and out. She played a huge part in changing life for the African American people, God Bless her. I remember the way it was and I was such a little thing, It hurt my heart. The Lord made us, all of his children. He created us all unique, just as he created everything around us. He loves all of us and if anyone thinks, heaven is going to be divided, Blacks on onside, whites on the other side, Indians,in another section, think again, that is not God's way. We will all be together, Christians, spending eternity together as one with the Lord. Amen !!

Well I never met Eartha Kitt but was aware of her disappearance from the public and always wondered why? Now I know, thank you for this clip of her life. She was an activist from the early days and her charitable efforts are heart-warming. What a woman!

During the time she was out of the limelight in the us I think she was very popular on TV and theatre here in the UK In fact I grew up thinking she was British. An amazing lady.
One's ideology often plays a role in being accepted or not. Some would sell their souls to be accepted & not black-balled. Ertha Kitt made mistakes in her beliefs like many do here & there, but she had great strength of character to take a stand on issues & right OR wrong was not a two-faced coward trying to ride the fence to be safe for financial or other gain. She stood up for what she believed and appears to have been very grateful & humble to others along the way, as well as charitable.
What an incredible journey she made, truly. (why were her henchmen so doofus-y looking? LOL---haven't watched that show in so long) Eartha was what's called "a triple threat" with the singing/dancing/acting, but with her gifts for piano and languages as well, she must have had an astounding brain! She overcame so much. Thanks for the video.
I’m met Eartha Kitt at a gig I was doing in Hartford we had a great conversation she was an amazingly gracious and inspiring person I’ll never forget her

I was always taken by the idea of a bilingual or if not a multiple language in song and this talented woman comes along and does just that long before my time. Amazing life she's lived and naming her daughter Kit and stating how she complets her long before it got to be echoed throughout the Jerry Maguire movie. I'm just blown away by everything she has accomplished.
Such as exceptional life - I'm so happy to have learned more about Ms. Kitt - I had only been exposed to her as Catwoman on Batman and later in life to her rendition of Santa Baby! Truly an amazing life.

In the UK, it's impossible to go into any shops leading up to Christmas without hearing Santa Baby in with the other Christmas regulars.

I loved her, the day I "met" her on the Batman '66 reruns (In the 70's). She had eyes that could look into your soul and she was GORGEOUS!
