  • On todays episode we finally get the chance to test the all might Honda power plant. We invited Jon and Manny to cleghorn to really find out what these beloved AWD machines can do. The Passport and Ridgeline both have a system called B.A.L.L.S created by Manny himself. Checkout the episode and let us know what you think.

    Awesome video George! Thanks for the Lesson and making sure I didn’t roll. It was awesome to see the footage from the outside. I saw a lot of slipping in my Passport, we saw similar issues when we went to Gorman. The Ridgeline was able to drive up a steep hill where my Passport was skipping and slipping its tires and I wasn’t able to make it up. I’m not sure if it’s the tires or all the added weight, but I’m going to see about going with a different set when my tires are worn out. Just to clear it up, I never got a transmission overheating warning, but my trans got to the hottest it’s ever gotten too, which was 240F. I did get an AWD heat warning about 5 times. No limp mode, but does scare the crap out of me 😂. Yeah man, I suck at this terrain 😂. Make’n me Learn George!!!!

    • @TrailMilitia
      @TrailMilitia  Рік тому +6

      Aw damn I thought the warning was the trans. As for the passport the terrain and experience on being on it is a huge part. To be fair though you said it best you didn’t buy to crawl it’s good for what you need it to do. I am curious on how the new passport will fair with its new tech.

    Impressive seeing the Ridgy do this! I am coming from a 4runner and just traded in for a 23 Black edition Ridgeline. Driving on the road is night and day! Handles like a nice SUV on the road with so many things the 4R didn't have. 99.9% of my driving is on the road even when i go hunting so it made sense for me to go with the Honda. I wouldn't even think of rock crawling with my Ridgy and it wasn't what it was built for but man its cool to see someone going for it!

    @Bagger1978 Рік тому +10

    Biggest problems with the Honda awd system is the lack of low range, especially on the 6spd. Long slow crawls will overheat the trans pretty quick. It needs dedicated trans cooler and fans if you want to consistently do slow high altitude crawls. I've had my lifted 08 Ridgeline all over the San Juan mountain trails and had a great time doing it without any support vehicles.

      I got a 2023 Ridgeline this summer. A big snowstorm just after the new year was the acid test for snow handling, my Ridgeline did great! We had about a foot on the ground and the roads I traveled hadn't been plowed yet for the most part, and it was still coming down. The biggest problem I had was other drivers on the road, I damn near got sideswiped by a Chevy Silverado, that guy was all over the place. Not trying to crack the Silverado, maybe he had bald tires or no skills.
      I've had a lot of fun in the Utah desert going places that my RAV4 couldn't make it. I take my offroading pretty casual, I'm not doing anything hardcore. The Ridgeline is how I roll, right tool for the right job.

      I use to drive a FJ cruiser, but never offroaded it. I drove it to big bear to go snowboarding, but got sick of daily driving it. I then moved on to the Subaru platform, but then I ran into capability issues. It was actually a TFL video where I saw these Hondas doing so well. Jeep crossover and the Hondas were the only AWDs able to make it up their Gold Mine Hill obstacle. After the CVT (transmission) blew up in my Subaru, I actually went to go buy a Tacoma, but I couldn’t fit in one properly (and I didn’t want to go back to the J150 platform with a 4runner). The Honda dealership was next door, and the rest is history. I was really trying to get rid of the Subaru and the CVT asap, and back in 2019 I only wanted to go with either Toyota or Honda, two brands that are perceived to be very reliable. If I could make this decision with todays selection, I’d probably go with the new Nissan frontier. The VQ engine is known to be pretty reliable, and I like how it has a normally aspirated V6 and a 9 speed transmission.

Has a more spacious and comfortable cabin (I couldn’t fit in a 2019 Tacoma comfortably, otherwise I would have bought one), and it’s more fuel efficient. Cleghorn offshoots are rated as “difficult 4WD” terrain. My Passport has 117K miles over 3-3/4 years of ownership. It’s my daily driver and my adventure mobile. I’ve been up imogene pass in Colorado, Fins N Things south/north in Moab, but yes…. I absolutely sucked at Cleghorn. I understand you and the way you think, but bruh…. It’s not rocket science. To simply put it, I’m an overlander, and adventurer, not an off-roader. I’m in it for the destinations, not the trail.

      I like to off road to be challenged. If I am driving a lifted to high heavens fully decked out jeep, then going off road may as well be a drive to the nearest Starbucks, you've let tech do the work and there is no/less challenge to the task. I say it's more fun to take a low to moderate challenge trail in a less capable vehicle than a technical trail in a decked out rig. Plus, the decked out rig has less trails available to challenge it, vs a lesser rig that can find "challenging" terrain everywhere giving more adventure options. Plus one can daily an outback/passport/Bronco sport/etc more livably (even if modified like these) than trying to daily a decked out jeep.

    You wanna hear something really really funny.. my 2004 CR-V is better than these with just some slightly oversized tires. 😂 it so much shorter and just humps over stuff. Plus it has miles better approach angles.
