Honda Issue Uncovered! Cant access in-bed Trunk / Spare tire - Watch my repair method

  • * Please watch the second follow up video as I have uncovered additional info on why it failed.
    I experienced my trunk bed fail to open on my 2018 Honda ridgleline with 48,000 miles. In this video I show you the issue at hand, How I went about resolving it and how you can prevent this from happening to you in the future. Regardless of what year 2nd gen ridgeline you have I highly recommend you do this fix ASAP!
    If this fails and you need to access your spare tire or if you have an emergency kit stored in the trunk and cannot access your bed trunk this would be a major issue.
    I have already confirmed with other Honda Ridgeline owners that this electrical tape installation is what Honda is using. I have seen other vehicles experiencing the beginnings of this electrical tape separation issue.

    Even after the tie wrapping the tapes.
    I would run a cable from the release handle to the drain plug through a conduit. Piece of mind 😊

    Not sure how I ended up here but I’m definitely popping my trunk and checking to see if they corrected this issue with the 21 model. I work at Honda though so I highly doubt it and honestly laughed out loud when you said “this yellow tape is what Honda decided was a good idea.” You have no idea lmaooo. I guarantee there is a shit ton of workers at the Alabama plant who have been bitching to some engineer to no avail for years. Great video!

    Honda always has two escape modes for their locked areas, my 2019 would not open and after checking this video I was able to use my key and all was well. My vehicle needs to be unlocked for the unit to open. I can unlock the truck😊 or use the key.....two escape plans.........your cable plan does not seem necessary as it is an electric switch

    Knowing HONDA has installed 100s of millions of cables on cars/trucks and motorcycles over the last 75 years something tells me that is not the hold down [clip] for that cable. There is a cable housing end near the ball and I have never seen one that didn't attach to the frame of the part needs actuation at that point! I could be wrong; I highly doubt it!

    It is amazing that Honda would install a cable and NOT have the only holder NOT screwed into the panel next to it, so it never moved unless it was loosened for adjustment, etc...

    • @YuriyMotso

    Yuriy,
    I just opened it up and looked around. The cable you are referring to is actually the cable used by the physical key. On you keyfob has the physical key, use it in the lock and it actuates the cable. The electric solenoid doesn't use the cable you are referring to. I might be wrong but that's what I am seeing. I triggered the solenoid and the cable doesn't get touched at all. In your case, the cable shifted and prevented the key lock method to open the trunk manually.

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 роки тому

      I will actually be doing a secondary video maybe today or tomorrow and post up soon. Doing some diagnostics on it and there seems to be more than one thing at play here. I first need to confirm my suspicions and once I do I will make a secondary video. The zip tie I’m recommending is definitely helpful regardless. In fact if what I test out confirms what I think may be the issue, it can be the difference between the handle failing eventually and you never noticing that it failed. it will continue operating even though there is an issue. I Will show you all how to prevent this system from ever failing again. There are just too many flaws and no safety in place. The one that was in place failed so my repair method is definitely important.

    • @davidwong1826
      @davidwong1826 3 роки тому +1

      @@YuriyMotso In the video, I didn't see you try using the key at all instead of the solenoid or squeeze button. • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 роки тому +1

      So yes, these are realistic numbers you could see on your vehicle. I do a follow up video testing out a few more filters and the performance filter the second time didn’t perform as good. There are many factors for this. I explained to another individual why it could be but basically we were able to reproduce the numbers that AEM claims. This is like a best case scenario. I think it may not always run this way though. Without a specific tune you may not be consistently running those numbers. Also remember that these numbers are in the peak band over 5k rpm. So in my testing the overall best product is the drop in AEM filter. It’s what I personally use now and it’s cost effective. Good gains all around using that product. Not promoting it but just stating what I found to work best from my tests. Hope this helps.

    Great fix and wow what a challenging problem. Your fix clearly solved the issue for you. I'm wondering if the real culprit is the retaining clip just before the ball on the trunk release cable. I've had to replace the broken plastic retaining clips on several mechanisms exactly like that you showed. Typically if the manufacturer plastic retaining clip fails the cable housing is pulled past the retainer letting the ball and cable "push" too far as you have shown. An aluminum replacement retaining clip is a permenant solution not subject to failure as a plastic zip tie will be over time.

    Very similar to what happens in the late 90s early 2000s f150 that keeps the extended cab back door from opening...

    Can anyone tell me why one wouldn't install a power tailgate lock and make electrical attachment to this trunk lock circuit? instead of running a cable all the way to the engine compartment?

    Wow - good work!! You really tackled the problem systematically. I have a 2006 RT which I bought new. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Every problem I have ever seen on this channel regarding Ridgelines has been on the newer ones. Did Honda out think themselves with the 2nd generation of Ridgelines? Did they add too many electronics and gimmicks and shortcuts like this one? I am not going to investigate this on my Ridgeline because I have not had a problem and suspect that the original design of the trunk system was not configured in this flimsy way. Any thoughts by 1st and 2nd gen Ridgeline owners?

      Thanks. So I have a secondary video which I checked one additional component which was the main reason for the issue. But it would not have failed had this been properly secured here as well. However it’s one of the earlier production models so that’s another reason I believe.

      Scene: You venture to your favorite grocery outlet for a scheduled curbside pickup. The stage is set..
      -ACTION-
      Worker: “Where do you want your groceries?”
      You: “Eh, just put ‘em in the trunk.”
      Worker: “So, in the back.. the truck bed?”
      You: “No. The trunk. Here, let me show ya.”
      ..You and the worker walk to the back of the vehicle..
      You: “Watch this! Bet you’ve never seen a truck with a trunk, have ya?”
      ..You open the tailgate like a door and swing it left. Your depress the super secret trunk release and.. and.. it opens
      You: “The trunk.”
      -CUT-
      ..You watch as their eyes light up, just like a kid that’s had a coin “appear” behind their ear for the first time..

    Great troubleshooting skills! Excellent presentation skills as well! This video is hugely useful--thanks for taking the time to create it. I will just suggest checking the temperature rating of the zip ties you use. Not all zip ties are equal. I've seen zip ties I used for car stereo installations become brittle and fall apart due to the extreme heat conditions. I found a chart that indicated the interior of your car can reach 150 degrees F (or more!) with the windows up in summer, on a 100-degree day. I don't know how hot the trunk in a Ridgeline gets in the sun, but you can buy zip ties rated at 185 degrees and higher. Metal zip ties are rated at a whopping 1,000 degrees, which admittedly is overkill. Having an underrated zip tie eventually fail is just as bad as not installing it at all. 😀

    Hi Yuriy, I justed watched your problem shooting of the bed truck lock system on your ridgeline. Awesome on the investigating work. Good thing your trunk was empty. I'm on the market to buying a pickup and compling a list of all issues on rideline , tacoma and baja. This will add to a list of rigdeline issues I've complied.

    Along with the rest, I'll be zip-tying the cable shortly. I appreciate your video showing the problem and solution. As you said, a trunk with food in it would certainly get a bit rank in a couple days. Not gonna take a chance on it. Thanks again.
