Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro vs Honda Passport Trailsport - Snowy Off-Road Battle + Real-World MPG

  • Опубліковано 15 бер 2023
  • We compare the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro with the new Honda Passport Trailsport. The Toyota 4Runner is pretty clearly built for the hardcore off-road crowd, while the Honda is posing as an off-roader. But when the pavement ends, which is a more livable daily driver? We took the 4Runner and Passport on a long drive to find out, and to compare the real-world MPGs.

My dad has a Passport and it's awesome, and I feel a lot of people don't understand the point of the vehicle.
It is a very good "all-use" SUV. It does everything well. Not amazing in anything accept acceleration and I think cargo space for it's class (non luxury mid-sized SUV), but well at everything.
It isn't as off-road worthy as a Jeep (both GC and Wrangler), but it's more reliable.
It isn't as off-road worthy as a 4 runner either, but it's quicker handles better, and most of all, it's better on gas.
It isn't as good on gas as a Ford Explorer, a Nissan Moreno, or a two-row highlander, but it's probably better off road than they are.
    It's a solid all-rounder of an SUV.

Can't go wrong with Honda or Toyota...I did try both and ended up buying my wife the Passport it just drives so darn smooth on the hwy and absorbs road bumps a lot better than the 4-Runner...the 9 speed trans in the Honda is by far better than the Toyota shifting wise...as far as reliability goes we all know like I said before you can't go wrong with either one and I've owned both products since the late 80's so I can comment on that fact.

I think the real truth of this test was well stated at 17:09 The younger version of me would buy the 4Runner without a care about total cost and increased expense at the pump. The now older version of myself would appreciate the extra room, lower cost, and better fuel efficiency of the Passport. If you aren't going offroad 10+ times a year then the Passport is the more sensible option. If you offroad more often then you will get the value of the extra expense out of the 4Runner. Good comparison.

The 4runner would last longer honestly. My mom has a 2016 Pilot, bought in 2015... not impressed with overall quality. It ate 2 fuel injectors & a caty converter, barely under warranty. The seats are terrible, most uncomfortable seats I've ever experienced. She wanted a three row commuter, between this a Highlander and a Buick Enclave, wanted me to pick it out because I'm the family "car" guy. I chose the Honda over the Toyota... big mistake. My younger brother bought a 2017 Highlander the following year, the Toyota is the better vehicle.

I went from a tripple locked land cruiser to a passport, honestly the passport will go 90% of the same places that the cruiser would. everything except for the most extreme or huge wheel lift spots. The passport lifts a wheel sooner but the awd does a great job.

    • @k0pper
      @k0pper Рік тому +7

@@HandyTot People really underestimate how many places you can go with picking a good route (you don't always have to take the most extreme trail to get to a campsite or destination), picking the easiest line, some high quality tires, airing down for the conditions you'll be driving in, using some basic tools like a shovel/traction boards, and just general offroad driving experience. Of course, if off roading is your hobby this isn't for you, a BOF SUV or truck, or something like a Jeep with 2 solid axles is always gonna do that stuff better, but if you just want to get to cool places in your daily driver and you're willing to learn how your AWD system works, what the limits of your vehicle are and how to use their hardware/software systems to your advantage, many people will be well served by this current generation of more capable crossovers. I'm coming from a built GX470 and I'm now considering the new Pilot or one of the Subaru Wilderness vehicles because they seem like great daily drivers that have the capability I need for those 5 or 6 adventure trips each year.

Great video I've owned a 4Runner and recently just bought a Passport Trailsport. I think a more even comparison would have been the base 4runner SR5, which is what I had, but it is still superior to the Passport off-road. Before those, I had a base 4wd Nissan Xterra and it took me everywhere I wanted to go off-road in Arizona. 4Runner obviously did also, although I liked the smaller size of the Xterra. I have only taken the Passport off road once, mild trail. But everywhere in Arizona is very rocky. I don't mean boulders or rock crawling but just millions of sharp jagged rocks, football size and smaller. The lack of underbody protection is my main concern with the Passport, though I just had minimal on my previous vehicles. I'm getting older so I won't be going off nearly as much as I used to that's why I got the Passport. My next vehicle will probably be a mobility scooter.

Why would you choose this over a Pilot though? They are selling at pretty similar price points and the Pilot is more roomy. I'd think that especially for families the Pilot would be the better choice bc of the additional space in the back row. I'm between both cars. Sometimes I like to go on some dirt trails in the desert, so I'm thinking if their off-road versions would work for that.

Nice review, had a 1998 4-Runner (Limited) for 17 years and 217k miles, it was the most reliable vehicle we ever owned (it was my wife's daily driver). Not the comfort and technology of today's vehicles, but a very solid SUV. Fast forward to 2019, when I was looking to go from a BMW 3-series and get my first SUV (a daily driver for me). First on my list was a 4-Runner, but upon closer inspection, I noticed that Toyota had NOT upgraded the engine and transmission in something like 15 years, which lead me to an AWD Passport. Swapped the stupidly designed 20" Low-Profile Tires/Wheels for some 18" AT's on Black Rhinos and I'm ready for anything! Well except that it NEVER snows in So. Cal. and I typically only get it up to (light dirt roads in) the mountains a couple of times year. But is is super smooth, powerful and quiet, I don't ven miss my two BMW's...

the fact you think "sr5" is not 'off roady' cause it's a base model tells everyone how 1.) naive you are 2.) unaware the general public is of how all these things 'off road' things work

The TRD Pro is mostly brake tricks for traction and a 1 inch Fox suspension. You can easily take an SR5 and make it much better than the Pro with a 3 inch suspension and possibly air lockers. Air lockers are much better than all those traction gimmicks.

It is amazing how the 5th gen 4Runner came out end of 2009 and it is still relevant and beats the competition over and over again. Honda Passport and Pilot are based on their minivan platform which is essentially the old Honda Accord V6 😂.
If Honda wants to play with the big boys then need to come up with a ladder frame platform first then some durable transmissions. Honda keep producing below par products in the last two decades. What happened Honda? You guys use to build amazing vehicles back in late 80s and 90s.

Great video, thanks! Curious if i am not an off-roader, is it correct to assume that Honda's I'VTM4 (not even mentioning Acura's SH-AWD) is a way better (on icy/snowy roads) than 4Runner Limited (or GX) - would they (4Runner & GX) behave similar to I'VTM4 or Toyota's AWD is similar to CRV's one? Thanks again

This is a good comparison but I’d imagine a lot of people buying the Passport are looking at the Jeep Grand Cherokee or the VW Atlas Sport and maybe the Toyota Venza. The 4Runner is going to be a better off roader because it has a lockable 4WD but for most people the Honda VTM4 is plenty. It’s a great AWD system. I just can’t wait for the new one since they’ll actually add more off road goodies.

Honestly, I consider these totally different vehicles, and the driving dynamics would be the key differentiator to a prospective buyer. I'd reckon long-term cost of ownership would be a wash, as any fuel savings by the Pathfinder would likely be offset by slightly greater depreciation over time.

Currently have FJ Cruiser, and while I don't go off road much, the Honda would be more than enough for me. But its those small things that I don't like. Big #1 is that push button shift selector. Hated in the Accord we had. #2 Roll down rear window. I will take that over auto-lift hatch. On that note, the money savings for the Honda is a big plus, just a little disappointed in Honda's recent reliability issues. So I don't know which I would buy! 😞

I've never owned either, but that 4Runner just looks amazing in terms of classic, legendary rugged manly trucks. It's been one of the best looking trucks on the road for a long time. By comparison the Honda looks almost like a small minivan inside and out. That said, I still really like the passport and would own one myself, it's a great medium sized SUV and is clearly superior on-road..in acceleration, handling, MPG, and overall comfort. But the 4runner obviously rules off-road, as well as in legacy, and simply blows the Honda out of the water in "truck" appearance. I would turn and look every time seeing that 4runner, and likely never even notice the Honda.
