  • We've all done it; blamed our hands and fingers when we can't hold a particular chord down. Thing is, most of the time it's got nothing to do with our hands - it's all about technique! Watch this short vid, it should help fix that 'dodgy hands' syndrome.

I am 75 and I have chronic osteoarthritis in both hands, which has greatly impacted my ability to play chords. I have played guitar for forty years and with the onset of arthritis I elected to learn to play slide guitar. This has allowed me to continue to enjoy playing guitar, while not being able to perform all the playing styles that I used to enjoy playing.

unfortunately, you are right! Ugh. Its mental intensity to be in correct form, not just looking for results, but, reenforcing the correct feelings and positions. The end of my fingers have a bulge of flesh that make some chords muted, but I am getting around that with deep concentration on my finger instertion angle. Keep on keeping on is the way to go

Thank you. My challenge is memorizing it all. I tend to repeat about two measures at a time, then try to go back from beginning to what I thought I had memorized. Reading music or using tab might help but your bluenote fingering sheet really helps get it going!

The best piece of advice I ever got from a guitar teacher when having trouble with bar chords was " it's not pressure it's placement" I'm still crap at bar chords but I don't fear them.

While I don't disagree with your point at all Rob,the reason these 'wonderkids' can play some of those chords is due,in lots of cases, to youngsters having more cartilage than bone in their hands and feet( although feet usually have little to do with playing the guitar!) until their late teens and beyond. There is obvious great talent of course but also a physiological side to it too. Us oldies will not be able to do some of the same stretches due to physiology,in part, but there are always ways around it even then. This is why in our beloved football (Soccer to North Americans) that youngsters should stop copying wearing those ridiculously short shinpads that professionals wear as their joints are still maturing and bones are not yet fully formed. This is not me making excuses but more of a lesson for those of us who get that inferiority complex when we see those fantastic players at such a young age and want to burn our guitars! :) Don't fret (no pun intended) and be as good as you can be yourselves and not some Chinese 8 year old on UA-cam people.

Is it Fiona Boyd's version of Gymnopedie (#1 I assume). I play that one. I had a little trouble with the parts that were up on the 9th 12th fret and above. But I think I've overcome that now. Anyway it is a beautiful piece.

Angus Young from AC/DC tends to hold his Gibson SG quite high, opposed to the people who like to have their guitar swinging around their hips 😂 it might look cool, but it’s not very practical to have a guitar hanging that low so it’s probably better to play the way that George Harrison and Angus do.

Excellent as always. The technique question I had is how you do the finger roll on some of those Gymnopédie chords. My fingers don’t want to move so quickly one after the other so I just have to pluck them all at the same time 😩

Dear Rob, Please do "Thank you " by Hall and Oates from their 70's album "Whole Oates". Its a lovely mellow finger picking tune. I know to everyone out there, it will seem obscure, but have a listen and see what you think. I have wanted to be able to play this for years, but unfortunately, I'm quite thick when it comes to transcribing from recordings. Cheers.

People underestimate the effort endurance it takes to play guitar. And classic rock songs is like sleeping they certainly don’t require stretch. Alan holdsworth maybe. The new modern guitarist are hard, try learning any polyphia song for challenge. The eighties elite shredders struggle with new styles. Guys like slosh Guns N’ Roses are intermediate level. The average guy who puts in time can play slashes entire discography. Polyphia takes more than just practice,
