His technique is so masterful that it looks like there's not much going on with the left or right hand, yet out of the guitar comes such a range of subtleties and emotions, his playing is as classy as it gets.
I learned to play fingerstyle as a teenager in the 1970s listening to Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Don McLean, James, Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Harry Chapin, and Paul Simon. Eventually I could pretty much replicate what all of them did except for James Taylor. He always had a unique approach to timing that threw me off. Great to see this close up analysis of his playing.

Distinctive- and genuine two qualities that really really help you connect with people as a singer. I'd always thought James was more of a tenor but much of his singing IS in a low comfortable range and he has an almost conversational style - which is where much of his warmth and appeal cones from. He could do a good blues vocal early in his career to, for variety and had a pretty string falsetto. He doesn't use it so much on record now though. Either he's lost it due to age, or he's decided it doesn't suit how he wants to connect with people now Going for the high notes is really more of a younger man's energy voice. Awesome video. Gotta love his comment about having a "not so great" baritone voice. Rock on JT! Adding this one to our favorite music playlist on our channel.
+PaulOrientedotcom Actually he wasn't commenting on the quality of his voice but that his voice doesn't land in such a favorable location with respect to the guitar. He thinks voices that have other ranges are "great" ie have more game to play with. Thanks.
I have seen James Taylor in concert twice.. once up in Massachusetts at Great Woods, and about a year ago in Columbia, South Carolina. At the half time break of the show, he came down to the center of the stage and allowed photos to be taken with the audience. If you play guitar, make sure you see him live... a great guitarist!

The great jazz guitarist Pat Metheny dedicated a song to James. It's called "James" strangely enough. One of the great voices I think too. Apparently he can harmonize anything vocally and can hear and sing the most difficult intervals. But what a beautiful soul and poetic too.

I wonder how he did the recording, it seems a stereo mic was used
To watch someone that is so into their guitar, knows it inside and out is truly impressive. He was meant to play guitar for sure.
I know he prefers keys A, D,and E but I think his playing in G is magnificent. Listen to "You've Got a Friend".
Yeah, but I like how he said he doesn't like playing in C. I've always felt the same way. Glad to know I'm in good company.
James, I've admired your singing, writing and guitar playing for a very long time...Jack Baker NYC
learned a couple of nice chords and licks from that
thank you James
I have followed you since I was very young . I find it inspiring that you are searching for many of the same things that I naturally have been searching for . It makes me feel like I should trust my instincts . Frankly like mabey I am on the right track . That I am not a loser . You know mabey when everyone tells me to quit , thats when I know I must be doing something right . Thank you .
His guitar that he played on Howard Stern sounded so crisp - it was perfect !
Nice interview, and thank you James for your guidance and explanatory views on playing guitar. Your guitar work has always been a favorite of mine-not to mention your voice and songs that are first among your music and guitar playing-you were truly blessed, even though your path was traversed with much effort on your part, you have made such a great contribution to us all who appreciate such artistry. Your voice has made much more influence on your sound that makes it what it is-no worries about how low it is, rather that it has been such a strong reinforcement and delight to your music-I and many others would have it no other way! Keep play ing and singing your heart out! Thank you for all of it! Barry
Thanks.
Let me count the ways I LOVE this video!!! To hear the man himself talk about technique is gold to me. Thank You!
I love you James Taylor! Fellow North Carolinian!! I could recognize your guitar with lead-in chords!!
I have seen James Taylor in concert twice.. once up in Massachusetts at Great Woods, and about a year ago in Columbia, South Carolina. At the half time break of the show, he came down to the center of the stage and allowed photos to be taken with the audience. If you play guitar, make sure you see him live... a great guitarist!
a master musician speaks about guitar playing and you understand, excellent
You watch UA-cam videos then feel the difference when u hear someone who was and still is an artistic genius
I love the fact he is self aware enough to know that the rest of us talk about "James Taylor" chords.
There is a beauty in his hands. He has had a life of giving. He soothes my soul and always has since I was a child.
2:43-3:24 Such a beautiful melody...
So talented and so humble... How can you not love James...?😍
God has given James an awesome gift which he has thankfully developed further over the years. PTL!
Grow up. God isn't real.
Saw him perform years ago. Tasteful player. Love that he's faithful to these two guitars. What a lovely piece of music he plays here!
What was the name of the song he played, it was so simple yet fantastic
2:20 when he starts playing my jaw dropped. What a master and what great sound that guitar can make in his hands.
How many artists are as well loved as this man?
As a fellow acoustic guitarist I’ve always loved Hanes Taylor. This video is brilliant 😊❤️🎶
The great jazz guitarist Pat Metheny dedicated a song to James. It's called "James" strangely enough. One of the great voices I think too. Apparently he can harmonize anything vocally and can hear and sing the most difficult intervals. But what a beautiful soul and poetic too.
