Tony Iommi's classic Black Sabbath sound chain RECREATED!

- In this video we check out the rig that Tony Iommi used in the early 1970s:
1969 Laney Supergroup and Laney Goodman equipped 4x12 half stack.
1966 Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster
1964 Gibson SG Standard (Iommi used a 1965 Special with custom pickups)
It's funny how Rangemasters have been overlooked when they were such an integral part of so many fundamental classic sounds. Hardly anyone knows about them, meanwhile there are 897^67 Tube Screamer clones.
Yeah it’s greatest pedal ever in my book!
@@JohanSegeborn I never explored them when I was younger because I thought "TREBLE booster? I don't need more treble!"... Being Gen-X I missed the prior days of boosting the front end of amps being a more common thing, but in reality it's functionally a big part of the classic rock era.
@@TheChipMcDonald The other cool thing about a great TB is you can set your amp slightly darker and have a fat af rhythm tone that sits great in a band mix and just hit the 'pop' pedal when you need to jump forward in the mix.
How do you figure nobody knows about them? Anyone who loves sabbath knows what it is... I think people just found other ways to get what they were after, and tube screamers are cheap and literally everywhere.
@@taegag6179 1) Not everyone loves Sabbath.
2) of the people that do, how many know what a Rangemaster is?
3) what is the ratio of TS clones to Rangemasters?
4) how many people get to play their amps dimed on stage in 2019, AND with a treble booster in front? Versus how many now may not even have an amp on stage?
But I've only been playing and teaching guitar for 35 years, so what do I know?

hahaha
Ja!
"It's not a double neck!"
Is it just me or did everything sound a bit thin and compressed. I was expecting a fuller darker sound.
That SG sounds absolutely stunning in this combination!
Thanks Goran!
One of the greatest sounds ever! Essential to the history of rock and metal music.
Amen to that! Cheers
Great sounds, great playing, and great job visually evoking some of the classic Sabbath imagery. Thanks for the killer video.
Tony Iommi is a legend! I can listen to his tone for hours is given the chance. Awesome video!
Long time Laney fan here . This one is pure brute force with clarity punch and sustain ! Love this pure tone . Great video !
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Your best video yet. Premium guitar tones - particularly those front(neck) pickup chords in the final minutes. Magic.
And yes, I loved the video effects...
Thanks Oren, glad to hear that!
I read somewhere once that Iommi did something really weird with his EQ on the amp. I think it was bass on zero, middle and treble on 10.
I keep my bass on 0 for the early albums, sounds really good. Some people add bass to get the "doom" riff sound heard in his later albums but as a soloist it doesn't sound too good playing those jazzy leads.
Thank you for getting all the gear and doing this video. Tone is killer!
" Well done Brothers!" Great examples of tone character and a Fine Video Production! Thanks for sharing Simon and Johan, Be Well!
Thanks brother!
one of my favorite guitarists with my favorite guitar tone, thanks for this video Johan!
Thanks man!
Man, I love this sound Johan! You can hear that the guitar/amp is always right on the brink of feedback! That is awesome and a huge part of getting the proper sound - you need that volume and not just a dimed distortion pedal.
For me, Tony Iommi is one of the most important guitarists ever for rock/heavy music. He's in my top 5 of all time no doubt.
Thanks for this video, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Rock on!
Fine playing, as always and those graphics just freakin’ me out, maaaannn!!!
Thanks! Yeah it got kind of weird with the mirrored legs there for a while :-D
Great tones Johan. That Rangemaster is where the magic happens here .... it really brings the Laney to life and fattens up the sound from the cab.
Thanks Chris, glad to hear it!
Tony iommi had a modified Dallas Rangemaster which had more of a frequency boost and he used P90s and the Laney amp he would run clean with his Settings being Presence, Treble and mids on max his bass on 0 and the volume on 10
Almost.
He set the bass at 0 and rolled the knob up with the amp craked at sound check to "dial it in to the venue", but imho he was avoiding fart from the low wattage speakers he was using.
As far as "clean" the Supergroup is nothing more than a less reliablle Plexi with different output transformers.
I had a YBA1, as in, has a bass appropriate tranny in it. It's still a plexi.
Cranked to the high heavens it's only ACDC levels off gain, and Iommi knew about volume knobs on his guitar, I reckon.
Sounds incredible! You came up with some cool riffs too!
Thanks Jim!
Really dig this video. Classic tones. Love the Sabbath style riffs. That old amp sounded great if not a bit treblely (if that's a word). Thanks for great videos always!
Thanks Wade!
Finally someone who got it right. I get so sick of these "sound like Iommi" vids that over-complicate his rig and tone. They end up sounding nothing like him.
Excellent video,as always!
I find it rather disappointing that people would give it ,or any of your videos, a thumbs down....oh well.
Wonderful rock sound. And SG's rock. I love the easy feedback as well. Great combination and great playing
Thanks, glad you like it!
Tony Iommi - Master of Doom !!!
🌟
Love it... He is the Master of Doooommmm!
Great video Johan. I remember reading somewhere that Iommi ran the treble on his guitar half way and let the Rangemaster do all the work. You def nailed the tone, cheers!
Thanks man! Cheers
You nailed something like 50 AMAZING tones here, but slightly touched iommis one. A+++
Great video! Thanks for putting in all the effort to do this. Nice to see Simon again too., I love his playing. I cant comment on Iommi sound but this sounds great to me, and at 8:24 I think you really found something, great to see!
Thanks, glad to hear it!
THANK YOU for the great stuff.
Thanks Jake!
Johan you are a Legend, but I have to confess I am a massive fan of Simon! His playing in your videos is just... well, sublime! 👏
P90s are necessary for classic Sabbath.
John birch
He used the early p90s before he had his sg customized by John birch himself you can even see a photo of a charlie Christian pickup on it in a gig.
that was so great, i love the sounds!
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
Listened to Symptom of the universe straight after and it's bang on man! (bearing in mind the variables of how the original was captured etc) Amazing. Love it.
Thanks Steve, I’m really glad to hear that!
YES!!! Good video! Rock on john!
Nice!
For the Plexi users: Guitar -> Treble Booster -> Normal Channel. Works with humbuckers and single coil.
Another good old amp to try is the Randall RG100ES. I have the original one from '87. It's an awesome transistor amp.
Thanks!
@@JohanSegeborn My Randall rg100es (no metal) ua-cam.com/video/OxrDFg8BGHg/v-deo.html
Waiting for your better video. Cheers
I hope you play Pantera with it
@@filippogalli3477 Not in my video. I wanted to do something different. There's already a tons of metal/pantera videos of this head.
However, I'm uploading a new video if you're interested. RG100ES in the mix. Extreme - rest in peace guitar cover. Sound huge! ua-cam.com/video/77O6ItDL65A/v-deo.html
This is great! got the chills going.
Fantastic video as always Johan. What about considering some Ron Wood Faces era tone in your next videos? I think his sound and playing were absolutely beautiful
Thanks Federico!
Federico Zambon totally agree! His playing and sound are among my all time favourites
@@theodore738 mine too man
I dont find it sounds anything like Iommi's tone 🤔
I agree. Not bad but I don't hear Iomi any more than a usual guy with usual gear. A bit tinny if you ask me. No butt.
@@terrybartak7811 my thoughts exactly
Most of the clean tones from this vid are beautiful, ear candy
Not me either! It sounds tinny. It doesn’t sound like Iommi. Just like a guitar straight in to amp with treble boost. 🤔✌️
The guitar is wrong and for some reason all of his videos have more or less the same sound. Might be the recording gear.
@@becauseiwasinverted5222 also he aint playing any iommi licks, nor does his style and riffs come anywhere close so you can compare..
Thanks for this!
Anyone else a little disappointed he didn’t even show what the p90s sound like ?
The Ccarbiter
Yep
@Mitch Longfield Yeah like he could have at least showcased them a bit
@Mitch Longfield Hell yeah it would've
I am more disappointed by the fact that the guitar isn't DOWNtuned
@@michaeldoerksen2841 yeah that wouldve been nice to hear with the riffs from master of reality
Looking forward to the Rangemaster video. My Rangemaster Copy is my most used pedal
Glad to hear it! Cheers
Nothing like Iommi's tone, sorry guys. The tribute is admirable though.
Don t forget the sound of mics, console and tape chain...😉
But then again the playing is nothing like his either so.... not really a fair comparison. The tone is absolutely amazing nonetheless
That amp sounds fucking amazing!!!
I think Tony had his modified with some extra switches or something.
@@monosound81 there’s a billion things at play. Yeah mics/console/tape/how it’s mixed. Also Tony’s fingers bc of the accident probably make a specific sound, there’s so much in the hands. Also I’ve heard he uses really light strings but back then who knows. I doubt any of them actually remember some of the details.
@@chadherring2790 absolutely. There are so many factors that come into play when it comes to tone and sound.
Great rig demo!
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Very cool!, I am a big Tony Iommi fan and the range master and laney supergroup is the basis of the Sabbath tone!
Thanks John
We love you Johan. Just thought I'd pass that along.
Thanks my friend
Amazing tones, perfect !
I actually built myself a Rangemaster pedal, using an AC128 PNP Germanium transistor I bought on eBay, and some parts I bought from my local Jaycar Electronics shop, for a very simple circuit I'm very surprised at how effective it is, all the parts in my Rangemaster are mounted on an 8-way tagstrip, old school style, sounds great when used with an amp that's already distorting, total cost to build it was less than Au$100.00, and yes, I'm a big Black Sabbath fan too.
Been waiting for this video. From the founders of metal.
Cheers Dave
That was friggin awesome!
I was lucky enough to get one of the 50 reissues of the LA100BL, this really is the ultimate rig!
Congrats! This is a killer
Bruce Hamilton Oi mate, remember me from fcoaw way back?
Careful, Iommi may call you out on Twitter as he did another youtuber.
What happened??
Thanks
Can’t wait to tour Europe 🤘
The most iconic "hej" starting a video. You instantly know were you are. You're with friends. :-)
Thanks my friend! Cheers
This is amazing!!
I love the old Laneys. Good stuff!!
Killer tone. ...for me , much better than some modern gear...
Thanks, glad to hear it
rayvandragon I agree. Sometimes less is more.
all amazing tones
Just got the British Pedal Company Rangemaster to pair with my LA100BL reissue, sounds amazing!
This time I must say I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't go all the way and chopped your fingertips off to get that exact Iommi sound. Great playing and great sound as always.
Thanks Jesper! :-)
C # my friend ! I am closer with my rig Sunn 1969 200s powered thru 1960b cab with big muff and SG jr.. but it did sound very good ... thankyou!! And merry christmas !!!
Merry Christmas my friend!
Great Demo. Thx...
Thanks!
Just bought 60 watt 1970 supergroup and it has a really distinctive nasally tone that I love.
I absolutely love this amp!!!
Oh yeah and kudos to both of you for your playing very Sabbath-esque riffs that had the right character and feel but (hopefully) don't trigger the stupid copyright claims.
I Can't wait to hear those goodmans
You are the king!!
What an amazing way to warm up a cold night!!!
Cheers Sam! :-)
Literally gave me goosebumps.
Glad to hear it! Cheers
NICE to see Simon in a proper pair of socks this time! \m/
Johan you rock!!
Thanks Jack! Cheers!
How the hell do you find all this vintage equipment?
Internet
Rangemaster video!!!!! Yes!!!!
Sounds mint 🤙
Great tone!!!
That's unreal tone!
sounds pretty close!:0
Tony did in fact use p90s in his sg tho. but wow those humbuckers sound good.. must have been the amp then
What a killer riff at the end of the video....so good.

Goddamn that tube overdrive is divine! I’ve not heard of Laney!
OH MY GOD !!! TONY IOMMI !!! 💓💓💓💓👏👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘🤘
Johan, please check out some other Laney amp too. AORs, GH50s & 100s, etc. Been dying to hear you guys state them for a spin
Glad you found a LA412 with Goodmans. Finally got Laney to say that those was in Tony's first 412 for the first album with the 60 watt head.
Cool, I didn’t know that. Always assumed the first album was 25W Celestions. This one is the 100W. We’ll do the 60W soon too.
@@JohanSegeborn I have a Laney LA100BL head from 1970. Great amp. Use it with a Variac. Just trying to find a LA412 with Goodmans.
@@JohanSegeborn When you do, you might give the classic setting a try. Everything on 10 except bass=0, and TB on 10. Control it from the guitar volume after that.
When these tones are multi-tracked, we can get close to the holy grail tones. The recording equipment of the era also plays a part. I really enjoyed the 'clean tones' because that's how I roll ( - :
Thanks! :-)
Love it 👍
Sounds EXACTLY like my SOUND CITY 120R head (with Trainwreck Type 1 Post phase inverter master volume) on a 4-12" grey back 25 watt Celestions cab and a 2-12" cab with 2 Celestion G12-70's (spkrs)....., Strat with DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker pickup. Also 61' Gibson Les Paul Jr. w/ single P90.
(The 'Rangemaster Treblebooster' part of the equation was accomplished by using my *Watkins Copicat Mk IV tape echo* , as it had a 'buffer' booster that stayed on all the time. That buffer is a perfect match for the P90.
Can you make a video of that Vox AC50 (maybe vs a AC30) in the background there! It's such a great amp and completely lives in the shadow of the AC30. One of the cheapest proper vintage amps I know of
The neck pickup in the 64 sg special was replaced with a John Birch simplex p90 and the bridge pickup was a John Birch rewind of the stock gibson p90 . They were much fatter than a typical p90 so it makes sense that a humbucker would sound closer than a regular p90 .
All these things you are soing are completely CRAZY !!!Where do you find all those AWESOME pieces of gear?
I have very nice friends :-)
🤘 Very cool ‼️ 🤘
Thanks!
Huge sound, it's got the 'grong!' Everything just rings.
I read that Tony used the neck pickup for rhythms and the bridge for solos. And also that he got his Laneys modded to get close to a Plexi sound.
Subscribed!
Pretty good tones. One element of Iommi's sound in the albums after Paranoid was that he tuned his guitars down 1 1/2 steps from standard (i.e. tuned from E to C#). In the clip it looks like you and Simon are using an SG tuned down 1/2 step. Wonder if you tuned down further if you'd get closer?
Vult Cult My thoughts exactly. I thought The Riff Master only turned down a full step tho.
Thanks, yeah we should’ve tuned down more, but at the same time we wanted a recording that can be compared directly to other recordings.
@@nitemareman1 no it's definitely one and a half, listen to children of the grave as an example
The tone at 5:47 is immense
@@nitemareman1 It's 1 1/2 steps down but the studio recordings are pitched slightly up for some reason, so it ends up halfway between C# and D standard.
Thank you Johan! 5:30 - Cool jam that Simon (sp?) plays. Not sure if that's a Tony thing, but it turned my head - cheers!
11:26 lol nice lefty move!
PS Oh, again at 13:57 and longer - nice!
Thanks Chris, yeah that’s one of my favorite Simon Karlsson riffs. Cheers
Fantastic riff... this makes me want to fire up my late 60's Laney LBO/PA.
I always know good tones are coming when I hear "Alright. Let's Go."
I've recently discovered, if you're on a budget, one of the cheapo Klon "klones" will get you in the ball park of a treble booster. I got pretty darn close to Iommi with an $18 Mosky silver horse with the treble knob all the way up slamming the front of a Bugera V5 driving a bigger speaker (or IR in my case). Same thing with a cheapo Epiphone Valve Jr head.
Brilliant sound.
Any chance of doing a review of the Laney TI 15? Great little amp.
Thanks, absolutely if I get the chance!
I have a Laney GH50L and a 412 Laney Cab and a Laney VC 50.
I have other stuff too, But I love Laneys.
What I find surprising is the presence or high end in this recording, when in my experience the Supergroup is darker. Would that be because of the humbuckers, the amp input or the unmodded treble booster? Typical Iommi amp settings were everything on 10 on the bass input, with bass at zero. Treble booster would be at 10.
Or the Goodman speakers? Are they trebly?
The Goodmans are much darker than Greenbacks
Yeah it’s a dark amp, but I think his recorded tone was even brighter than this
Have they made a newer version since then or what is the closest pedal I can get to recreate this sound, I've tried many variations but never can come close to this classic sound, it sounds similar but not really spot on so to speak, any way you did some great playing thank you!
Bad Ass epsiode, ty! Need to listen one of tony's' recent intro solos..this config...heaven & hell die - young..MB enthusiasts on yt.....love that sound..👍🎸👌🎶
Thanks man, glad to hear that!
Interesting for me to notice, that we can have the exact gear Iommi used for all those classic Sabbath records... but 90% of his sound came from his personality, then fed thru hands.
We usually have a long disclaimer at the beginning of every clip stating that the tone is mostly in the hands of the artist. Can you guess why?
Got too play a 62 ... love it ...
Hey, Johan, Nice video! What is your opinion about the Iommi sound in Headless Cross album?
