Jaydee Monkey P90 pickups: Iommi tone for days

- After many changes and playing my SG for 12 years with different pickup sets it’s time to try one more modification: the Jaydee Monkey pickups, which are similar to the John Birch modified pickups on Tony Iommi’s original SG. Let’s find out if they capture any additional Black Sabbath tone.
Really cool guitar! I’m willing to bet this sounds more like Tony’s guitar than those $20k custom shops Gibson released last year.
I bought both. They are both very good pickups, and they actually sound similar, but if you want something closer to the original John Birch's pickups from the 70s, in terms of manufacturing, Jaydee's pickups are the most faithful to the original.
@@riccardorubini3078 They just stuck standard P90s into metal covers, pretty lame if you ask me but it's not surprising for Gibson. The actual John Birch pickups in Tony's guitar have a DCR around 10-12k, JB rewound the P90 hotter with thinner wire to fit more turns onto the Gibson bobbin. Also, the Simplux was originally in the bridge position and the P90 was in the neck.
I imagine this guitar was still pretty expensive.. givbson sg reissue, rebevel, refinish, vintage pots and knobs, jaydee pickup, custom pickguard, lacquered fretboard - sure it might be much less but it’s still a pretty penny
Yes you’re right LGMx - altogether there were many changes!
I wish more modern pickup manufacturers would make pickups in this style. They have such a cool vibe
Looks and sounds amazing! They really bring the look 100%. Now we need to hear them through a supergroup ✌
Thx for the pickups! Unfortunately don’t have a Supergroup anymore ..
@@TheSterlingSound i understand! Those giant high wattage monsters are pretty much overkill for most of us.
@@orokusaki8291 I had a vintage Laney stack for 12 years. It holds no mysteries to me 😅
@@TheSterlingSound Hello! Which speakers were in the Laney cabinet? Goodmans? Celestions?
@@phildemetro either of those could be in there, and I used to own an original cab with Fane speakers
I love how these pickups. Really brings the overall look of the guitar together. I've bought a set of old boy pickups for my sg. Might have to get a set of these next!
Where did you purchase the Old Boys? Thanks!
@@TribalWitch jaydee guitars
bevels look great hugging the pickguard
Fantastic stuff as always dude!
I find it so amusing that by virtue of these pickups your guitar is more accurait to Tony's Monkey SG than that $30,000 monstrosity that Gibson put out with innacurait pickups...
Thanks for demoing these! Your playing and the pickups sound fantastic!
I'm in the process of doing a really similar project to this one, I'm making a copy/tribute of both Tony's Monkey SG and also his JayDee Old Boy guitar
I've ordered JayDee pickups for both guitars and both will be made by modding suitable Epiphone guitars (becouse I cant afford Gibsons haha) the Monkey out of an Epiphone 2020 SG Special with P-90s and the Old Boy out of an Epiphone Tony Iommi signature SG
How much do these pickups cost ? Both the old boy and the monkey pickup set ?
@@akshayseller73 they both cost £250 GBP per set, not cheap... but a fair price for a set of pickups potentially made by the same hands as those that made Iommi's
still waiting on mine though...
@@jakubshouseofrock7109 both of the guys who made Tony Iommi’s gear are dead though.
@@youtubeisshit6587 I'm pretty sure John Diggins is still alive though
One of the best videos I've ever seen. All of those riffs remind me of about 10 years ago when I was listening to Sabbath all the time. Refreshing!
Sounds awesome!!
What string gauge do you use for C# tuning and do you run into any intonation issues with that non-adjustable bridge?
Dude, that tone is 100% SPOT ON!!!😎🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great sound. It was when you really started to play the TI riffs and lead that the tone really shone through. Not easy to get the huge ballsy bottom end coupled with barking treble and it all sounding good. Excellent.
The Monkey and Old Boy are two Holy Grails for me. I'd put the Dean From Hell in there too.
The very closest Iomi sound out there in You Tube land by far ! love Sabbath what a Great job on the SG 🤘
Nice video bud I love the history of the sabbath sound !! Great playing !! I'm using a gib p90 for my 70s sabb tone I do ok
Do you know when he went with the Jon birch custom p90s ????
🤟🤟✝️✝️✝️✝️🤟🤟
Not very long after recording the first album, which was still with the red SG before mods.
@@TheSterlingSound thank you sir yes I ended up reading the monkey and black 24fret got the magnums then the ol boy got rails ??!!!!??!!!!??!!
@@TheSterlingSound thanks oh wow so I was under the impression he didn't use the magnums till never say die !!?!!?!!??
Very close Iommi tone, I think the key might be to use your tone a little to darken it a bit, the laneys Iommi seemed to use in the mid 70s seemed very dark he seems why he disabled his tone control to get more treble but in a modern setting with my jcm 800 I tend to darken my sound a little more with my tone knob to get that sort of bassy throatiness Iommi had
Do you know where i can find the superflux pickups ? Great playing i love the tone😄 its so powerful 😈🤘🤘
Praise Iommi!
Best Iommi tone
Super Cool Guitar.
Sounds capital!
Why didn’t I come here first? 🎩’s off! I bought a 62’ this year and it was a miss. I don’t think I have ever been that heart broken. I admit that I’m way out of my lane....failed folk singer territory. All I was out was shipping, but It really came home to me the facts that not all guitars are equal. I’m still searching, but isn’t that half the fun!
Excellent video! So much is said about this guitar, the Birch and, of course, the Diggens SG. No secret either about the Sabbath recordings they've been featured on. But "Sabotage" is the one sole album that is never mentioned ever -by anyone? Could Sabotage have featured the maple J.B.1 guitar and JBL D120F speakers? Could this combo, in fact, be the holy grail of Iommi tone?
Sabotage is the first album where the John Birch features and possibly the JBL speakers too.
Sabotage is the first album where the John Birch features and possibly the JBL speakers too.
Crisp and clear 👌 love the pick noise more than the others... how do they sound with the bsm metal pedal booster???? Or the 50 watt... lol
Great demo! Glad you got them!
It looks Delicious
Hey man love your videos! You nail Tony's playing more than anyone I have seen. I am curious if this guitar had a tunomatic bridge originally. Were there additional holes drilled further apart at the bridge position to compensate for the wrap around tail piece? I want to turn several of my tuneomatic style bridges into wrap around but I cannot find any information on it anywhere. Thanks!
Yes the original had a tuneomatic bridge and holes were widened to accommodate the wraparound bridge.
Amazing! Did you try the Leo Quan Badass bridge like Tony?
Your guitar is awesome! How did you end up settling on the Black Country Customs Iommi boost? I've been trying to narrow down options and finally buy a treble booster. I got a 1980's Laney AOR 30watt tube amp.
Is like BSM a lot but the BCC is very good and flexible
@@TheSterlingSoundHave you tried the Rory Gallagher Hawk Flynn treble booster? I think that and the TI Boost sound the best
Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
I'm wondering how they would sound like on a GH100TI, as you said they sound sharp so that could be a fairly interesting tone to achieve a brighter and more precise The Devil You Know / Dio Years' 3 new tracks tone.
I have a LaKland. Geezer custom shop . headed my way.. This fall/late summer... Just wanted too thank you.. Your my fav. UA-cam. Channels. 2021... Better late then Never... Lol.
Just got a 1964 sg special... last Friday. Lol... but it's a remod.. with... humbuckers. Pots still 64 tho
These new guitars are way over priced... so I just got it
Sounds amazing man! Would love to hear this axe through the bcc iommi booster and the laney supergroup I've seen you use before 😎🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I know this is the pickup configuration in the monkey guitar as it exists today but from 1970 to at least 1974, Tony Iommi was using the Simplux in the bridge position and the P90 in the neck. This can be seen in various concert photographs of the era, most notable is the pic of Tony on the back cover of Vol 4. I don't know when they were switched around or why but it definitely was after 1970-74, ie. the classic era Sabbath tone everyone is trying to replicate. Just count the pole pieces of the neck pickup (the bridge pickup is usually obscured Tony's picking hand), it's 6, not 9.
Yes but I’m not sure how accurate these pickups are to the original. It won’t be very different.
@@TheSterlingSound If they read in the DCR range of 9-10k instead of the 7.8k to 8.2k of a stock Gibson P90, those are the specs of the original Birch pickups. The critical difference between the Simplux and the rewound P90 is that the 9 pole pieces will have a higher inductance than the 6 in the P90. Even if the coils, magnets and overall construction of each pickup were 100% identical, the Simplux will sound darker due to the difference in the inductance.
@@lgmx-peacekeeper3204 it’s an interesting thought. I’ll swap them around once. The 6 pole is pretty bright indeed. The neck pickup is just super smooth and juicy.
Sounds so good ! What's your string height on that beauty ?
what a sound
Lovely guitar
This popped up on my YT home page. What mods were done to his pickups out of curiosity? I haven't researched it enough. Sounds good, what amp are you using? It seems to have that upper midrange bite like his pups do.
Better potting, different winding and magnets on the neck pickup. Amp is the Strymon Iridium.
Incredible tone! Are you using a stock cab on the Iridium?
Yes the stock cabs B and C usually
Very Nice, awesome sound 🤘🤘🤘
this is awesome. may I ask what amp do you use too? thank you
Damn i wish i could get my hands on those pickups any chance you'd be willing to sell me this guitar?
Guitar sounds incredible really impressive sound out of it. Where did you get that zero fret at?
Just have a good tech install it. It's not too big of a deal to do. It may require a new nut as well because the nut be trimmed back to make room for the zero fret. I prefer a zero fret on my guitars, such as my Gretsches that came stock with a zero fret.
Thank you for making this video 😁
Hey can you redo Thrill of it all, trying to learn it by listening but need some help fine tuning it and have been using ur old video. But old video isn’t as good quality as your new videos, would be very helpful to redo it. Please and thank you, you’re the best Iommi cover guy on UA-cam and love your vids🤘🏻just remember love is life and hate is living death.
Did you have to modify the bridge holes, or does the lightening swap right in?
The holes were modified
Sounds and looks really good but it seems like it has no sustain?
Mostly because of the Strymon
Do you have banjo strings?
Im very curious as to what jazzy scales Iommi uses in the end of symptom of the universe and also what you are playing in your improvisations at around 9:20
Tony uses the Dorian mode at the end of SOTU. The stuff I do in this lick is mostly a blues scale with some chromatic notes.
@@TheSterlingSound THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE ! HELPFUL!!!
what if tony put p90's in his strat? would history be different?
Any idea what the output was on the bridge pickup in the Monkey? I’m having Jaydee build me a Monkey inspired SG and I would like to find out what the bridge was rewound to. I’ve heard rumors that it was rewound to 24k, but I’m not sure how true that is.
My bridge is around 10k
Amazing!
How do you order those pickups? Don't see pickups for sale on Jaydee's website...
Contact by phone or email I think
I am currently building a monkey SG with John Birch pickups a zero fret and badass bridge. I am trying to build this as close as I can get to the original. How do you have your pickups wired I hear Tony iommi did not have the tone pot wired on the bridge pickup. How do you have your bridge and neck pickup wired? Any caps and what is the value I appreciate any info thanks
That’s right. I don’t have the bridge tone control connected to get a bit of extra gain and treble. My pots are 500k all around but I’m not sure if the original had 250k. The cap is a yellow Jensen paper in oil 0.015.
So I'm understanding that you just have a cap on the neck pickup. I am going to be using the 250k pots all around. Did you do any of the copper foil shielding in the cavities I read that the original monkey also had that to cut back on noise. I don't know if I would need it or not especially if it doesn't do anything for the tone.
Thanks again for your help.
@@jamie2tampa I applied copper foil inside.
Thank you for that info. I will plan on adding copper foil also I am going to run .008 on the first and second string with my bass string being I think a .036
@@jamie2tampa it will be interesting
Very Nice Dude, all you need is to get yourself a Tychobrahe style Wah ;)
Where do you get the pickups??

@@harrydavies8340 I just ordered an Old Boy Standard lefty!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😎
What wraparound bridge model are you using?
It’s a Gibson lightning bridge from the 60s.

Where’d you get the sticker?
I had it made
where do I buy the pickups?
Jaydee
@@TheSterlingSound I’ve navigated their website and also sent an email that went unanswered. I’ll keep trying I suppose.
I would call them
What strings do you have?
Typically.010
also do you prefer the jaydee monkey pickup over the vintage vibe pickup?
Hy there Sir what it means 0 fret?
It is a fret just after the nut, before the first fret.
@@TheSterlingSound Thanks again Sir
arent they in the wrong spots?
Yes I’ll probably swap them round soon
