    I’m glad that you mentioned Tony’s use of the volume control on his guitar being on 8 for rhythm and 10 for solos. I’ve been trying to get his sound from The End for awhile and despite having all the correct equipment it always sounded a little off but rolling back the volume to 8 pretty much nailed it! Btw that sounded great! 🤘🏻

    You're nailing that tone I would say 98% honestly it sounds great. Probably one of the closest Iommi tones I've heard in all of the demo videos I've seen out there oh, and I have seen quite a few of them. I have personally owned both Epiphone Tony Iommi SG guitars the previous black one with the cross inlays and the latest release as well and honestly if you're going to buy one of them prepared to get a plek or fret job once you receive it because both of them had issues with the Frets straight out of the factory. That's why the Gibson's are a lot more money but they are handmade and perfect in every way. Out of the two honestly I would say the older model g400 with the cross inlays sounded more like Iommi with a sabbra cadabra pedal and a marshall amp versus the newer model. But that's just my opinion. If you look really hard you can find both out there used at a much cheaper price than the thousand dollars for a new one. I love these videos you're putting out man keep them coming.

    I find for playing alone, I stopped trying to get his tone. Without Geezer, its not as enjoyable to me. Like the Sabbra Cadabra pedal nails the Live At Last era live tone. I bet it sounds great in a band mix. But for home alone, I prefer a Russian style Big Muff or an FGE Massif. I like a lot of low end. Tonys actual tone isn't very dark. Sounded pretty good!
    If you can find one of the newer Epiphone Iommi's (I think 2014-17?) they're fantastic. Much closer to the real deal than the first iteration (which only had cross inlays going up until the 12th fret). Although the first lot had the same signature pickups at the time as the Gibson, I found them quite dark and much prefer the newer ones - I own both LOL. The more recent one I picked up second hand locally in Oz for $750AU still in the box with the documentation. Didn't look like it had been played either as I think it was a wall hanger for him LOL.
    And it seems like they've bought out recently a red Epiphone version with P90s as well, although definitely on the pricey side of things.
    You can get close with a lot of amps like Laneys and Marshalls, but I think the secret sauce is really the treble booster regardless of what brand you decide to go with. Rangemaster style treble boosters are pretty easy to make too if you have a little electronics knowledge. It's literally only a single transistor with a couple of resistors and caps. You could knock one up in an afternoon.

      I go back and forth on grttign an SG with humbuckers vs the gibson iommi. I have a rather noisy environment with tons of noise interference. I probably wouldn't use P90s much because of that which makes me also consider the epiphone

      Hopefully you can find a used one on Reverb or similar.

I’ve been trying with pedals(Walpurgis, TI boost, Naga)and a pile of cheap tube amps but broke down and got the LA Studio and it’s perfect for me. You really need a Laney amp to get the right sound. Iommi's sound wasn't static. I think you got it into the ballpark, but it sounds a little too overdriven, too modern, IMO.
    I'm not how sure having the same rig guarantees matching any particular sound, as others on UA-cam have failed using the same model amps, which has made me think Iommi used modified rigs and a lot of his sound comes from his fingers, as stupid as that sounds.
    Also to that, I've gotten a clear match to the early sound with a Hiwatt I own, which are supposed to be known for clean headroom pedal platforms, using no pedals at all and without need for high volumes, with a cheap Chibson Les Paul to top it off.
    The stock bridge PU was way overwound giving me that modern metal sound I hate, so I swapped it with the neck one, because it had less wounds, so there's that ... I lucked out.
    My cab wasn't ordinary either, as I had a blown speaker and had to wire it to work with three celestions, which I know now has been done before to contribute to personalizing a guitar hero or two's sound.
    Tube amps are more tolerant to mismatched speaker rigs than solid state ones, so it was simply a matter of reconfiguring something that would work.
    I gather the sound I curated is a combination of an English tube amp, the speaker wiring, and a classic sounding PU.
    So no, you don't necessarily need the same rig, and you don't necessarily need a new guitar, but a more classic PU should help.
    I think Iommi started out with P90s, which is counter intuitive, given the predominance of humbuckers in the genre and how they can feedback, but makes sense as P90s being single coils retain highs and I've always found myself lacking in those frequencies with my sound reproduction.
    Changing the the guitar wiring to 50s style is my next mod, so as to improve my highs, especially when rolling back the volume.
    If I can figure out how to integrate bass cuts, rather than the ordinary tone controls, I will.
    My setup does a good early ACDC sound as well. It's quite flexible, or perhaps I'm fooling myself and it's my fingers.
    Last bit, I think the SG does sound different than the LP even with the same PUs installed. It's less full-bodied than the LP. The LP easily sounds muddy when overdriven, so there's that going for the SG, but it's never been more than a half baked prototype with all its tuning issues, and head dive.
    Sorry about the rant.

    • @TheDistortionPrinciple
      @TheDistortionPrinciple  Рік тому +1

      No need to be sorry! Its always great to hear someone elses approach and it sounds like you have a great working formula for yourself. I also think less hotter pickups would have worked better

    • @boxerfencer
      @boxerfencer 7 місяців тому +1

      @@danielspaniel101 that's a band aid solution to a design flaw.
      Speaking from experience with a guitar that head dived, resorting to the strap to hold the neck in position isn't comfortable while standing. The strap pulls forward on the skin under the shoulder where the strap hangs, giving a rug burn or, as we used to say, an Indian burn sensation.
      To avoid that, you either have to hold the guitar angle up by either lifting with the left hand, or applying downward pressure with the right forearm, again irritating the left shoulder where the strap lies.
      As for players playing SGs, listing off prayers who may have used it isn't proof that the SG isn't defective.
      Besides, Mary Ford never used an SG, to my knowledge. I assume she used an LP while with her husband, but highly unlikely she'd have used an SG post her divorce when the SG came out, especially since it was named after her ex husband.
      As for Eric Clapton, you do know he hasn't used an SG for half a century or there abouts. Hardly an endorsement.
      Trucks is the only one from your list who plays an SG today, and best as I recall he plays it sitting down, which allows for more positional stability due to forearm and leg pressure, forming a fulcrum.
      That's not ideal, and it doesn't mean the SG created his talent. All it means is that he's developed his prowess despite the shortcomings of his instrument. Again, that's not a glowing endorsement.
      Personally, I might play one with a Bigsby to counter act the head dive, but that adds more weight. I've thought it has to be redesigned with a thicker body at least to add weight, perhaps from heavier/denser wood, or with an offset horn. And there's tons of wasted real estate on the bottom side, with the controls way off in the distance. I hate how close they are on a Strat, but the positioning on an SG is ridiculously far. It's just not a well thought out design, and probably why Les Paul insisted Gibson take his name off of it.
      And then there's the poor ergonomics of Gibson guitars as a whole, with their binding on the body, rather than contoured edges, let alone the excessive weight of many Gibson designs.
      There is one saving grace of Gibson guitars, and that's the arch top angle enables an ergonomic positioning of my right wrist, avoiding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or tendonitis, which I have gotten at various times.
      On the other hand, the way at least the LP hangs, my left shoulder is way too externally rotated, so it feels like it's being put into a wrestling lock.
      Gibsons just aren't well designed, have never had a clue what goes into properly designed guitars, and simply coasting on their reputation and the happenstance that their PAF humbucker overdrove amps better than other guitar's pickups, in a time when it was harder to get that sound, as well as that their guitars have better sustain than say Fenders. There's a middle ground, a better guitar, and Gibsons aren't it.

    Hey Bro, another question, So is what your saying is that the Gain on lets say 2-3 , is the same volume (loudness) as when its on 9-10 ? Also what speakers / cabinet are you using. Some / most of the videos i've seen demoing this amp it sounds so dark, your videos it sounds awesome ? thanks again. Still going back and forth between the jcm800 studio or the this Laney ? lol ... I'm looking for a killer low watt amp (nothing above 30watts) To tone stack fuzz, distortion boost pedals etc. Looking for that Modern (past 10 years or so) live Electric Wizard / Sleep sound.

      At 9 or 10 it will get a little louder but its always loud. I used laney cab IRs. I would suggest the laney la studio. Its this amp but with only 3 watts which will be a loud 3 watts. And has built in cab IR ability so you could actually run the same cabs that i do

    • @johnwolff3206
      @johnwolff3206 Рік тому

      No, dont want the 3 watt, want to get something a little bigger. I already ordered a Fryette ps-2 power station attenuator. Think im going to go with one of the Marshall 20 watt studios, the 800 or the plexi ? With a Marshall cab still thinking and researching, can always get Laney LA30 later, i think the Marshall cab would add some brightness to The LA30 anyway.
      I just keep watching those Electric Wizard live videos from the past 5 years or so, their Hellfest show last year sounded killer and they have stacks of Marshalls on stage, same with Cathedral when they were together jcm 800s. ?

      @@TheDistortionPrinciple Hey Bro, Question.
      In the past week i have become interested in running my guitar and amp heads into my computer. I kinda got the jist of it (not really lol) So when i got my new rig a few weeks ago i got a Fryette power station attenuator i can run line out to a audio interface, then i hook that up into my computer. Its the speaker part (i want to get studio monitors) i'm not getting, how do you get to choose on a computer the cabinets or speakers i want to send out to my speakers to emulate that sound, if you plug monitor speakers into the computer , how does the signal of lets say an orange 2x12 with V30S from the computer program get sent back out to the speakers ??? confused, but i'll get it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, hope this wasn't explained to confusing...

    Damn close and great playing dude! But an Epi/Gibson SG WITH P90s is what you need to complete your tone. The JB sounds slightly too much like you'd expect, regardless of amp and effects (JBs always sound easily identifiable). The P90s will make the difference to nail it 99%.
