@@JoseHenrique-xg1lp yes, for the first couple of albums. Later on he switched to hummies (because of all the buzz and feedbacks). But here they played the old stuff, which was p90. As for trebble booster, you need something with wider range, as his was modded for this. So the sound is fuller.
He played riffs in a variety of positions based on the songs set and what strings he had for live play. Thicker strings and he'd play the riffs he could on the higher strings so as to deal with less tension on his fingertips when playing for prolonged periods.
Tony used P90s most of the time until about 1975. His tone and equipment varied quite a bit throughout the years. During the 80s he used Marshalls and even Mesas. Rabea, at 1:25 you are absolutely right. Iommi played a '65 SG Special with P90s for much of the classic era Sabbath. There are a few tunes that Iommi says were recorded on a Les Paul or an SG Custom, but most of Sabbath, Paranoid, Masters Of Reality, etc is all P90 goodness! With as much gain and fuzz as Sabbath had, the difference between that and PAFs isn't going to be big though.
interesting approach to recreating sabbath's sound, I think it was pretty close. in the early years Iommi did use SGs with P90s, he switched to humbucker-ish pickups in the mid-late 70s at the end of the Ozzy era. he also played in standard tuning before master of reality, that record onward was when he started detuning. he obviously used laney amps but I saw something the other day about him actually using the bass channel and would cut the bass back, idk how accurate that is but sounds like it makes sense. the treble booster was used for overdrive and overall boost left on all the time until someone threw it away in 79, he used other boosters since then to try and get close. he used other amps to record with such as marshall and vox in the studio. sometimes he would substitute the laney with mesa boogies during the 80s and there are some photos of him using an orange. he did an ad for sunn but it's unsure if he ever actually used them. his main pedal has been a wah but he experiments with other effects all the time
I swear to jesus i'm gonna buy grammarly and shut it down cos i'm sick of getting these adverts before my sound like videos! can we have a sound like Steel Panther BY Busting the bank, just to see if you can do better than last time that or Meshuggah
Back in 82-83, I was in a band, called Ground Zero. We played a LOT of Sabbath. And, What I used was a les Paul custom(76) straight into a peavy centurion head with the gain up high, compressor on, and scooping the mids, high low and high treble, with the "frequency" knob turned up high. The cabinet was a Sonic with 4 x 12 celestions...It totally nailed sabbath tone.
Tony's tone is actually incredibly bright he would use the Treble, mids, and presence on 10 the bass on 0 and no gain it was all from his Modified Dallas Rangemaster which didn't cut all the low ends and he would play through the bass channel the heavy sound comes from his playing style and the bass following the riff. During Sabbath's last tour he didn't use the Laney TI boost he used a TC Electronic Spark but now he uses a custom vintage Dallas rangemaster. He did use modified P90s on the first few albums but he uses Custom Jaydee SG and the pickups are technically Humbuckers but they have 18 magnets and are as bright as his old P90s the reason why they are humbuckers is because with the Treble booster it would pickup so much buzzing it was unplayable at times.
For people who are interested in a good treble booster for the Iommi sound, I would extremely highly suggest the Naga Viper. It can go between full Rangemaster, clean itself up and take away the distortion in the Rangemaster, and you can also add some of the other frequencies back in like Iommi's modded rangemasters so that you can get the thicker/fuzzier distortion tones. It's great for a whole bunch of different uses as well.

You guys did an excellent job of replicating what I've heard over a thousand times over. The Laney did it, reminds me alot of my old Orange AD30, the gain structure is just right. Well done :)
@goobtuber it really kinda pisses me off when people say that about light gauge strings. Its all about style of playing and plenty of people get massive, fat tones out of light gauge strings. Its about what makes playing comfortable but like there is no sacrifice of any sound between heavy and light gauges cause I have heard tinny and weak sounds coming from 11s on a strat and earth crushing sounds come out of a set of 8s
@@JJMewett I just changed 11-60 strings to 9-42 and can get massive tone with lighter gauge, just changed my playing style and amp settings. Whit lighter strings i can get closer to Iommis tone with les paul.
@goobtuber Oh dude I'm not like mad lol it's just this common idea that seems to be perepetuated in the guitar world when people like Iommi and billy gibbons and many others have proven that it makes very little difference- being a great player is really the most key part of tone 🤣🤣

They got the bass and the amp down but you can't play N.I.B. without a wah pedal and some kind of fuzz or overdrive pedal to simulate them cranking the amp to make up for the tone loss from the wah pedal. I use a Dunlop Geezer Butler signature bass wah, a JHS Muffaletta and a Moog Minifooger Drive.
The editing and commentary is so much more engaging and fun to watch on this video. I feel like the older videos had a lot of wasted space. Keep it up.
Something I rarely see mention about replicating Tony's sound using the lightest gauge strings you can find. Due to pain related to using a prosthetic finger tip on his amputated finger, he sought out the thinnest strings he could find. Adding to that unique sound he also downtuned those thin strings, which is directly contrary to what modern guitarists do.

Day 2 of asking for a Sound Like K-On, it’s be an interesting challenge for you guys and there are some really killer riffs in that anime. Also waiting on a Sound Like Ghost, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Brian Setzer and a Sound Like Rush/Alex Lifeson By Busting (as the Without Busting one was a bit weak-sounding so to speak)
and i'll second Ghost, The Doors, Stray Cats, Rush BY busting and also i'd ask for Jeff Williams and Alex Abraham/RWBY without busting the bank, cos actually i'll tell a fact! i once got the Guitar Tone from the RWBY Song I Burn out of a fender combo, i think it was a champion... i gunned the gain, scooped the mids, cranked the bass and treble, and i rolled off a bit of the volume on my double humbucker guitar
Strings, action, tunings, scooping the bass and not the mid, chordal bends, chugging and damping - these are the things that make the Iommi sound. Oh, and playing in the right positions so you get lovely long ringing sustain on bass strings.
@@iPhoneeditor imo it does enough once you get into the Tyr and Headless cross albums. But then again when you compare those sounds to other bands at the time, i guess nothing new was done...it was just BS adapting to the times
@@hondansx1000 just had a quick gander and for those I have to agree, Headless cross sounds a lot more like a conventional 80's power metal type of sound and Tyr doesn't even sound like an SG to me. But to me these are pretty niche and don't represent Sabbath as most people know them. If you're going for a more classic and well known Tony Iommi sound you'd likely shoot for things like the Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Masters of Reality albums. My personal favorite is actually the Live Evil album with Dio as there is just this bite and sinister nature to the guitar sound, it's especially present on the Black Sabbath track for that album and the intro for it is really cool too.
The Catalinbread Naga Viper is the Rangemaster treble booster without the Laney amp stuff added to the Sabbra Cadabra. The Laney TI-Boost has both, not just the treble booster circuit. As a big Iommi fan, I've tried most of them including a Rangemaster clone I built myself and the Naga Viper sounds great. Sadly, no one will ever get Tony's exact Rangemaster sound because his box (it wasn't a pedal) was modified and it got indiscriminately discarded at some point.

Sometimes less is more. Great job. Black Sabbath was my first concert back in 1980-81 in Chicago for their Heaven and Hell album with Ronnie James Dio. WHEW! WILL never forget that night. 🎸🎶
How about sound like Ghost by busting the bank? I feel like you pretty much nailed the early Iommi sound on this one, nice work!
If you have Ghost you have everything
This just sounded amazingly good. It’s ready to go out and play with Ozzy
So, the Pooster's job is to push things out. Makes sense.
I don't have time to watch many of these, but this was the best one I've seen so far. Good job guys.
It actually says “Buusutaa” which is basically how booster is written/pronounced in Japanese
Source: I’m studying Japanese
AceMew im pretty sure it says pooster
I’m not sure if this was a joke or you didn’t read my comment at all
Nice! Good to know - my Translate app gave me like 5 different answers depending on the angle haha
バ = Bu ス= su タ= ta The "u" is silent between certain consonants, so it should be pronounced "Boosta". No expert though, as I am learning Japanese as well.
Exactly. Google translate messed up. Pooster is of course funnier but it does say booster (ブースター). Pooster would be プースター. The app was having trouble telling the ゛from a ゜:)
Wow, for not blowing the walls out that tone is very good.
4:49 Wild Danish Pete appeared!
By the way you guys nailed the guitar tones on this one. Kudos
Iommi definitely used P90's in the early albums - both in the studio and on the stage. That's probably why you guys couldn't nail the sound, along with the fact that you basically used two treble boosters.
Great to hear Matt's bass up in the mix, sounding very nice.
Kind of want to google "Pooster" to see what comes out - but also kind of don't
😂🤣
"To see what comes out"? Ohhh I think we all know what comes out.
"Yeah they come to snuff the poosterrrrrrrrr, oh yeah."
Great tone ! Each song snippet leaves me wanting the rest of the song !
Love this series you guys are doing, both versions:).....Maybe you should do a "Does busting the bank actually sound better than NOT busting the bank"....hehe
Yezzzzz....Paranoid was the first record i ever bought back then and got played to death on a pure record player chassis without housing from the junk yard...
Great one Boizzz.
Episode 2 of suggesting ‘sounds like Peter Green from to older days of Fleetwood Mac’
He also played with super light strings which i think contributed to the sound. 8's tuned down to C# have a voice of their own. P90's may have been closer....but his iconic Old Boy had custom made Birch humbuckers that were epoxy filled. I think your sound was pretty damn close with the Sabbra Cadabra! Loved the video, wish it was longer, lol.
Sound like Lynryd Skynryd without busting the bank (70s era)
No Freebird for you. LOL
Thanks guys, this really takes me back to high school when the Paranoid album came out. Love it! Rock on! 🤘🤘
Sound like Blur
Sound like My Chemical Romance
Sound like Judas Priest
Sound like Nirvana under 500
Sound like Pearl Jam by busting
Sound like Ritchie Blackmore
@the3-dkiller1 in what world do you get a shotgun for under $500
Sean King you can definitely buy a shotgun for less than $500
@@DrFearCo I guess it depends on the state you are in
Nirvana on a budget: Squier HH Jazzmaster, Fender Champion 100, Boss DS1
@@KeeperOfPoops I'm thinking more Squier HH Bullet Mustang since he didn't play a Jazzmaster. You could even do an HSS Strat. He played Strats a lot more than people think.
The tiffing at the end was sweet, and the sg seemed to deliver, it had a lot of punch and sounded great,
Sound like Robin Finck and Trent Reznor of NIN please!!!
Sound like Ritchie Blackmore by busting the bank!!!
Yes!
The editing and commentary is so much more engaging and fun to watch on this video. I feel like the older videos had a lot of wasted space. Keep it up.
Sound like the Cult :-) btw you guys rock
Black Sabbath is amazing! Quite literally the greatest Metal band of all time! Cheers for the showcase and accuracy!
Great video guys, to get any closer, Rabea is going to need to cut-off his fingers and glue some plastic on the ends when he plays!
Or he could move up from the 7th position on the A string to the 12th position on the low E string, the way Iommi intended. Hehehe
I was gonna say the same thing LOL. Wanted to see if anyone else commented on that detail before I did though. 🤘
Was that Danish Pete doing a Hitchcock like cameo?
Im huge Sabbath fan, from my early teens and you guys did magnificent job here
Couple suggestions, sound like kingfish, frusciante, king krule, Jimmy page (tele version), Eric Gales, Keith Richards 🤘
Cristone Ingram is an absolute legend! i love his rendition of Purple Rain!
by the way there's a rolling stones sound like already
they already did Sound like John Frusciante without busting the bank and it was the worst sound like ever!
they also made up with a John Frusciante BY busting the bank
Keeeeef😎
Very nice. You guys have the best job ever. Saw Danish Pete sneaking around. Thought he might have gone back to Sweden to spend the festives with family by now.
Dudes you should do a sound like powerwolf without busting ! It could be really cool
Finally! Please do a Randy Rhoads by busting soon too.
Day 2 of asking for a Sound Like K-On, it’s be an interesting challenge for you guys and there are some really killer riffs in that anime. Also waiting on a Sound Like Ghost, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Brian Setzer and a Sound Like Rush/Alex Lifeson By Busting (as the Without Busting one was a bit weak-sounding so to speak)
and i'll second Ghost, The Doors, Stray Cats, Rush BY busting
and also i'd ask for Jeff Williams and Alex Abraham/RWBY without busting the bank, cos actually i'll tell a fact! i once got the Guitar Tone from the RWBY Song I Burn out of a fender combo, i think it was a champion...
i gunned the gain, scooped the mids, cranked the bass and treble, and i rolled off a bit of the volume on my double humbucker guitar
Strings, action, tunings, scooping the bass and not the mid, chordal bends, chugging and damping - these are the things that make the Iommi sound. Oh, and playing in the right positions so you get lovely long ringing sustain on bass strings.
Wish you could've done some of the later Sabbath stuff like the Dio or Tony Martin era
Sound doesn't change a whole lot honestly overall but it would have been great to hear those riffs. Was looking forward to heaven and hell.
Tune to E flat and plug in a good chorus pedal and you're set.
that might have been humbuckers
Excellent Job guys! Sounds pretty darn close and with tha , I say CHEERS from the USA......
TK
Do Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
i liked it that was really clever you changed the dynamics of the sound with the pedals compared to the original sound of the amp. Nice
Please do "Sound like Eric Johnson without busting the bank"
Once again you guys did it its sound awesome as hell and also u guys should do a sounds like SLAYER!!! GOD BLESS ANDERTONS TV🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
"I'm not goin any furver until I hear Alan say that we're heavy metal"
My name is Vim Fuego and my guitar speaks for me!
only one sauseege? but it says "sausagees"
I think you guys nailed it especially from around 15:12ish 😍 gonna dig out my black SG now and blast some sabbath! Great job guys 😎🤘
Alter bridge by busting? Shinedown?
The Catalinbread Naga Viper is the Rangemaster treble booster without the Laney amp stuff added to the Sabbra Cadabra. The Laney TI-Boost has both, not just the treble booster circuit. As a big Iommi fan, I've tried most of them including a Rangemaster clone I built myself and the Naga Viper sounds great. Sadly, no one will ever get Tony's exact Rangemaster sound because his box (it wasn't a pedal) was modified and it got indiscriminately discarded at some point.
Sound like Black Crowes!!!!
Gibson ES335
Vox AC30
Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost Amplifier
Way Huge Red Llama Overdrive
Way Huge Swollen Pickle Jumbo Fuzz
EHX Big Muff
Way Huge Superpuss Analog Delay
Strymon El Capistan Tape Echo
Strymon Lex Rotary pedal
Fulltone Clyde Wah
That sounded incredible. Great job
