Angus's SG is really just standard. Iommi's SG is slightly more customized. I started out as a huge Angus fanboy but these days I also love Iommi's work.
I remember when that guitar came out. I purchased a 62 reissue SG, purchased the Tony Iommi pickups and had them installed. It was more cost effective. 5:446:006:00
I have the Epiphone version of this guitar. The strap button by the neck on this guitar is actually on the top horn on the Epiphone eliminating neck dive. You still get the Iommi pick ups, rosewood fret board, but all the hardware on the Epiphone is black (which I prefer). I got mine for a pretty great value, it's my go to guitar for the tone those pick ups create. Still my favorite guitar I own to this day.
Those are creeping up in value too. I had found one years ago for about 400 bucks (should have got it), saw one the other day and the guy wants about a thousand for it.
@ferox965 I was wanting to get another just to gut it for the parts to swap on a knock off Les Paul I have, but shit, it's probably cheaper just to buy the parts now. XD
I got a set of these sig pickups for my The SG, and I absolutely LOVED them. I was so excited when these guitars came out. Never owned one. The vibe is amazing.
The pickup has both ceramic and alnico 2 in each pickup. Both the ceramic and alnico 2 are full length bar magnets stacked together on the bottom of the pickup (were they normally would be). There is also a second alnico 2 magnet that is about only 1/4 length of a normal bar magnet on the top of the pickup setting in between of the two bobbins
I love it when SGs come with 24 frets. In my opinion, 24 frets should be a standard feature on SGs. Also, SGs are criminally overlooked guitars. Everyone talks about Strats, Les Pauls, Vs, Explorers or Telecasters but not many people are enthusiastic about SGs. I only became a fan when a friend sold me his 2014 SG Special. I've had it for a year now and I play the hell out of it.
My wife plays guitar and her first good guitar is the epiphone tony iommi SG from about 2008. It's a neck through and heavy as fudge! Easily 10 lbs. I modded the frick out of it. Now she loves it.
I played the Custom Shop Tony Iommi SN 002 at the NAMM show when they were introduced…MUCH thinner neck (nut width) than just about any Gibson I’ve ever played & had a V shape to it. Have regretted not buying it ever since. SN 001 was a lefty marked “SOLD” & I suspect Tony has it.
BTW those pickups can be split into single coil sounds. Hence the reason for 4 conductor wiring. I sold mine because I didn't like the fat bassy sound I was getting from the pickups. Nothing like the trebly tone I knew from Black Sabbaths first two albums. If I had known I could've single coiled these pickups I would've to try it out. I'm curious now to find me a pair to try that out. Noone on UA-cam that I know of has single coiled these yet. I believe it would get a more authentic P90 early Sabbath tone.
You left out the 2016/17 Epiphone SG Tony Iommi Signature Custom from that list Trogly. Still have mine and only Epiphone I have bought new and kept. Was extremely well crafted for the time with Gibson Tony Iommi Signature pickups, Ebony fingerboard and pearloid cross inlays to the 24th fret. I have played that thing almost daily since. Great guitar.
Unless I missed it, the different output jack position on the Custom Shop wasn't mentioned. I used a right angle jack to plug into the guitar. My first decent guitar was a '62 SG Special. Loved it for years until the neck actually started twisting!😳
I mean, gloss black shows every flaw, scratch, ding, etc. It’s only perfect right after it dries in the factory. However if you have a perfect gloss black surface you can then spray over that in a metal color like chrome and it will look like actual metal. It’s a weird finishing quirk that model makers and movie/theater prop departments use.
I love the looks. I hate the p'ups. And .83" may be thin for some folks but that's too thick for me. I have a black Viper that had a white pickguard but I had Chandler Music make me a black one so now it's all blacked out like this SG. I'm curious, do you play the War Pigs riff wrong every time so you don't get a copyright strke? LOL I'm just messin' with ya man keep doin' what you're doin.
Noice! I could dig that one fo sho! I have the " Toni Cherry" Epiphone SG Standard I bought new from GC. Built 10/97! I'm learning that this neck shape helps how I have to hold and move my hand. Besides D Standard tuning on 9's.
Love the look of those pickups. I have a no-hole chrome cover on my 500T in my The Hawk. Paired with a Firebird style neck pup and a Schaller 456, she’s a mean Bird of Prey
I really hope that they bring back his signature pickups. I would absolutely love to have a set of those cause some of my absolute favorite riffs to play are Black Sabbath riffs.
I had one of these, when I posted it on ebay to sell I had a lot of negative comments saying that it was a fake because they didn't know that Gibson USA made a batch of these. They kept saying it was Epiphone but they knew no better lol
I purchased a left-handed Iommi epiphone in 2017 for my Sabbath tribute..fantastic guitar for the value..24 fret, bound, inlays past 12th, neck through body and the Iommi p'ups...came with cool case candy..I love 24 frets on an SG. I bought it from zsounds at the time was $800.00. gave me a year to pay interest free and received it within the week. Still have the guitar and play it often...the tribute band? Eh, not so much ☹️☹️
I have this guitar but the Epiphone version (USA) I bought it new but I got no case and the hardware is black chrome I love it and have used it a lot It’s my only neck heavy guitar
The ABR-1 is an inferior bridge. They really should only use it on historic reissues. I mean the reason they made the Nashville bridges because the ABR-1 leans and/or collapses over time. Why put a part on a guitar that you know is going to break?
Because Gibson is all about tradition over function. See also neck break angle, chunky heels, crooked string pull, single action truss rods, etc. Anyone else would move with the times, but not Gibson.
@@john564holloway it does! And the moon/star inlay on the 12th fret. The thing has a baseball bat neck and I call it lucky 13 since the serial has all 0s 1s & 3s lol I was never a fan of the pickups tho so it doesn’t get played much
( always Wondered )..I was just wondering, why some USA Gibson SG Iommi Gutars have Fret-Markers all the way Down on the board, and some don't ?? (thanx 🤔)
I have that exact guitar! Bought new in 2001 up here in Canada..in fact mine might even be a hair cleaner!( great video by the way.)All hail Lord Iommi.
I am not a fan of the playability of SGs but I think they look cool as hell, especially Tony Iommi's. I think the neck pickup sounds amazing, nice and doomy, but the bridge sounds pretty awful in this demo at least. I would love to give them a try though. My favorite guitarist ever. \m/ \m/
It's really strange, that this guitar is 1:1 with 1st Epiphone Iommi signature. At least to my eye, I'm player, not expert. Headstock says Gibson, the rest is identical. I don't agree that both coils have the same magnet. They don't sound the same when you select upper/lower part of pickup. Please check inductance and resistance - are not the same for both halves of pickup. Resistance - perhaps the same, inductance - not.
I think adding the "horror movie" element to hard rock is what set Sabbath apart. As you said, there were heavy songs before Sabbath, but they weren't singing about the devil and trying to scare people. That's metal, and Black Sabbath did it first 🤘

they really shit the bed only putting crosses halfway up the fretboard... like who signed off on that being a good idea?. wouldnt buy one based on that looking wonky
As if I didn't already have issue with both the SG body-shaping so top-heavy and with signature models that are only generated to increase the price tag on an already overpriced instrument. Here, we get both. It's almost as though someone inclining toward purchasing this Tony Iommi signature SG should already be equipped with something like a studded dog collar strap. That could potentially be the solution to any electric guitar (or bass) that's top-heavy.

I'm proud to own the original Custom Shop Iommi. It plays amazing.
Tony Iommi truly is the godfather. Truly my original inspiration to play since I was a kid.

I have a Epi version too, but my strap button is at the neck base. Suspect it may be an early run version?
@ethansimpson1007 Yours is actually the newer version I believe.
The second you put that distortion on you could properly hear the Sabbath, Jesus. I love how those pickups sound.
I got a set of these sig pickups for my The SG, and I absolutely LOVED them. I was so excited when these guitars came out. Never owned one. The vibe is amazing.

Digging those pups - a really sweet, dark mellow tone. They'd pair nicely with my old Orange OR. (It loves that 70's classic rock stuff).
I love this guitar! Tony is such an underrated player! He should be named alongside Page, Clapton, etc.!
I have the custom shop version and it is an absolute beast! The differences with the production model are glaring, it doesn’t come close
Iommi pickups were the First signature pups that Gibson did , The first pups had the PAF sticker and the later had patent numbers.
Side note: The yellowing around solder joints are the flux used when it was installed.
I love it when SGs come with 24 frets. In my opinion, 24 frets should be a standard feature on SGs. Also, SGs are criminally overlooked guitars. Agreed! What's sad is the Gibson EDS 1275 & Epiphone version only come with 20 frets on each neck.
A normal person: Ah damn, I cut my fingertips off. No more guitar for me.
Tony Iommi: No more fingertips to slow me down! Time to invent metal.

Do you remember the price? It's probably gone astronomical given how rare they are.
I believe it was in the $3500 range….
Blame tony but don't ask for his opinion
I love the no pole pieces exposed pickup covers. I had similar ones on a Schecter that I really thought looked cool.
I set up the introduction between Gibson Custom Shop and Tony at the 97 NAMM festival. I have a picture of Iommi from that time.
Honestly surprised you haven't visited the Gibson factory yet and made a video. I'm sure they'd love to have you visit.
I may have missed it in the video, but it's also not listed in the description - what product do you use for the polishing?
The 61 neck is my absolute favourite
