      I don't think there is much point. They got there without busting the bank. What should they do now? They could switch the guitar and amp for bigger, more expensive equivalents, but it wouldn't really change the sound.

    I met Iommi some years back and mentioned his signature pickups to him because it was the very first pickup I ever purchased. He had no clue what I was talking about, his manager buddy had to remind him of what I was talking about. Actually, it sounded as though he really didn't have anything to do with it, more like he just signed a paper and *POOF* it was made. Really sweet guy though. Him and Chris Broderick are the nicest guitarist I've met to date.

      he mentions them a lot in interviews, as he even likes to know what kinds of people buy them and he likes to say jazz players like the pickups, maybe he calls them differently or something, to a guy that has signature everything, sure he would forget stuff

      @Katrina S Wow, that was a rabbit hole. I never realized that SD El Diablo Custom Shop pickup I have was originally known as an Iommi, and was designed in conjunction with Tony Iommi. Neat. Great pickup btw, ultra high output but very articulate.

      Signature humbuckers, pretty odd for a guy whose entire sound was based on p90 single coil pickups. That's what his first SG had and used on at least the first album. Latter custom made pickups were based on p90s, afaik.

      Kinda late but honestly seeing sabbath live on their last 2 tours Tony's tone is much thicker and a bit more modern sounding than their first few albums which they were going for. The sabra cadabra is built to mimic his old laney and treble boost sound so if it does a good enough job of replicating that as I've read I can see why they wouldn't just use his recent combo

    • @thomascarmichael6659
      @thomascarmichael6659 7 років тому +8

      That'd just get a sort of basic bitch stoner tone though wouldn't it? You want to also get that really amazing clarity that Sleep have if you're doing Matt Pike or the really dirty metal fuzz if it's Jus Osborn and Liz Buckingham. Would be good to get pointers on how to really nail that sort of sound so I could maybe try and implement elements of it in my own sound. For example I'd say an EQ pedal would be awesome for Sleep. Would help get the balance of tone he has from running two heads with everything full and four more giving out a more high mid overdrive sound. But personally I wouldn't have a clue how to set it up lol.

      I think it could be more interesting to do a band like Dead Meadow honestly. Those guys have such a good tone and use a bit of delays and other stuff (not much though). @RCAvhstape 7 років тому

      It's also his gear. Geddy with a Rickenbacker sounds different than Geddy with his Wal. Also, in his Rickenbacker days he used his bass in two channel mode, running each pickup to a different set of amps and signal chains. He's been a real gear head over the years.

    • @calenlas99
      @calenlas99 7 років тому

      For Alex: Grab whatever Blackstar you can get a hold of, gain channel, gain somewhere between 9 and 12 o'clock. Throw your favorite overdrive, one of the many Electric Mistress clones, and a Wah in front. Plug in a Les Paul or 335 and you're off to the races. Play with pickup choice and guitar volume to find clean tones, flip on the Electric Mistress when it needs to be swishy. (I find that for much of the 70s era stuff you can almost leave the Mistress turned on all the time if you set it for a subtle flange.)

      @Fedethedangerous95 7 років тому +3

      Me too, the red SG straight in the amp sounded A LOT better ... maybe more fuzz made it closer to iommi's tone (well I wouldn't be sure, in first albums his tone was 'dryer' than this) but to me it's better an open, dynamic, overall good sound rather than a sound more similar to what you want but too compressed and overall worse (besides, to add a slight fuzz you could even just turn down tone knob on Guitar)

    • @Epicusername0412
      @Epicusername0412 7 років тому +3

      Yeah, I also blame the Sabbra Cadabra, I have the feeling it was built for bigger cabinets... It sounds like the tone is being squeezed through the 1x12... And altough boosters tend to sound bit better with small speakers than OD pedals I would love to hear those pedals through a 4x12

    • @Fedethedangerous95
      @Fedethedangerous95 7 років тому +2

      +Epicusername0412 I strongly agree with that, sometimes overcompression may be a good thing if the amp/speakers are capable to deliver that punch and that amount of fuzz... An example is given by many stoner doom bands, in particular Electric Wizard

    -Butler uses Lackland PJ. You can get a similar tone with Yamaha BB734 wich has active electronic (Geezer has a EMG signature set) or if you want the exact oldy tone, a Fender Standard P bass. Geezer also played other basses, but that was not the rule. The pickup configuration depends of the song
    -Laney is THE Sabbath amp since the begining of times. The RB3 combo is a good choice. Set it with a warm and agressive tone, low mids and powerfull bass and treble. A little gain
    -Of course, a MXR Bass Envelope

    A treble booster over the Sabra Cadabra was massive overkill. Good to see you lads worked that out pretty fast. They based the Sabra Cadabra solely on a modified Dallas Rangemaster, and Tony's Laney supergroup stack preamp. I went even cheaper with my rig: an LTD Viper 400, Ehx Op amp big muff, and Ehx Canyon for reverb/delays running through a Peavey VK100 212 combo. I get pretty damned close with it, but the Sabra Cadabra would be icing on the cake.

    There's something really beautiful about the fact Tony wrote these crushing, catchy riffs that any beginning guitarist can thrill themself playing AND his signature gear isn't expensive, exclusive shit but really solid and reasonably-priced gear that is again in the reach of most beginners.
    (Plus listening to Sabbath can be a great gateway to everything cool metal has to offer, not to mention all the great blues and jazz that influenced them.)
    In other words, Tony Iommi provides the best guitar starter pack you could ask for!

      They will come to a dilemma when they come across artists that already use other people's signature gear. I can see that being a problem for wahs, especially. Many use either a Jimi, Dimebag, Tremonti, or Bad Horsie - all of which are signature models.
