It's another level to see a mechanic actually have a dedicated review channel that goes over more than just the shiny bits, but also the mechanical bits that a buyer needs to look out for.

Knocked it out of the park again! Because you are a mechanic, you really have the most knowledgeable car reviews on UA-cam. I especially like when you look underneath the car and comment, and unlike other car reviewers, you actually know what you’re talking about. I’m in a 2019 Sport 1.5T now and have been seriously considering trading up to the EX-L hybrid with 51 mpg, but after learning more about what a plugin hybrid is from your excellent review of the RAV4 Prime, and hearing that you think Honda may come out with a plugin Accord, I think I’ll wait. Thanks again and God bless!

When I was shopping for a new Accord in 2016, I wanted to get a hybrid…..Do you know that Honda was charging $45,000 for one back in 2016! I went for the ICE 2.4L, which has plenty of power and good fuel economy….now hybrids and ICE versions are basically the same price. I would be very angry if I bought a 2016 Honda Accord Hybrid for $45,000 in 2016 and then saw Honda drop the price on hybrids. I got mine for $27,000 including destination, taxes and $1,500 Honda sensing safety option through Costco car buying program.

I'm glad it doesn't have a low speed gear actually. Slow speed driving is what wrecks gas mileage in ICE cars. Because the engine can act as a generator and be in a more fuel efficient capacity at slow speeds, and then actually drive the wheels at high speeds when MPG is better, it ends up being an overall better system. Let the battery do the stop and go stuff, and let the engine take the consistent highway driving. Best of both worlds.

    • @scott8919
      @scott8919 7 місяців тому +13

I drive a CR-V Hybrid with the second, lower gear, and I have watched the power flow meter and the instant MPG gauge over the course of 4k miles. The gear indeed increases fuel economy, specifically at light load between certain speeds. What ends up happening when it is not "locked" is the engine has to rev a little higher to compensate for the efficiency losses inherent to turning a generator to power the battery that drives the car... might as well just go from gas engine directly to the wheels. Honda has it so when lightly accelerating it shifts into that gear at about 25 MPH, and you can hear the engine drop like an actual shift. Then at about 35 it unlocks because at that ratio it's no longer the most efficient way to power the wheels... which drops the engine RPMs, proving my point that at that speed the gear ratio is too low to be efficient... and then at 40 the revs drop again when the higher clutch engages. Only after pushing the pedal down about half throttle or higher does it then say "we need power NOW" and unlock ao the engine is free to scream as much as it needs to
Having a gear though means, beyond a certain speed, you end up revving the engine too much because you're going too fast to be efficient in that gear, and Honda did an excellent job with figuring out at what thresholds it's better to go one way or the other, at a moment's notice. I rarely ever see it trip up.

@@kevinmcd112 Thinking so usually means you are thinking about it backwards. This isn't a gas car where the motor helps the engine, it is an EV where the electricity comes from a generator and a battery.
The disadvantage - which is less than most think - is that you have to convert twice between mechanical and electrical power, when you could have just changed the rpm with a transmission.
The advantage is that you can keep the engine near 2000 rpm and 34 HP, where it is most efficient, almost all of the time it runs. Not even Toyota's PSD can keep it that efficient, although part of that is because they use a smaller motor and a larger ICE. The reason for what you may think is "stupid" is that if you have a narrow range of speeds where you can count on it staying there, you can link the engine directly and get rid of even more loss.

@@jeffjo8732 so you're saying it's like the guy driving a tesla with the gas generator in the trunk. It doesn't make sense.
The gas engine is always running and revs as it would if it was driving the car and gets literally the same gas mileage as the 1.5L turbo from the 10th gen Accord sport. This car is Honda's hint at going "full electric" to please the planet and save us all from the sun monster. It's stupid because this would-be "electric car" burns just as much gas as its gas-powered siblings. I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it. Electric vehicles are unsustainable.

There is a video that shows the transmission completely taken apart then assembled as they tell you how it works. The gas motor mostly turns the generator that powers the electric motor that actually pushes you down the road. The only time the gas motor directly pushes you down the road is when you punch it and need the extra power. He said 62 mph I heard higher. But after lets say you punch it and pass the other car and return to normal speed the electric motor pushes you down the road. It is truly genius like he said. Great review thanks.

When I had my 2018 Accord Hybrid, I absolutely LOVED driving it because of the hybrid setup. It's crazy how fast the drivetrain is able to regenerate and refill the hybrid battery. Trying to drive solely in EV mode will turn into a game, especially when you can manipulate the aggressiveness of regeneration. I'm able to drive around town that has a 25-35mph speed limit almost completely without ever turning the engine on. It's supper easy to get 50-60 mpg without driving like an old man in a Buick. It was amazing. The transition from ev to engine drive is also super smooth. Makes the Camry hybrid feel archaic. Couldn't stand driving a camry hybrid when I got a loaner after taking my Avalon for service. I can't stand driving other hybrids after owning it.

Thanks for a great review! I bought the 2023 EX-L Accord Hybrid six months ago, and I really like it. Things to mention - the EX-L has 17" wheels, for those who don't like the low-profile tires. The traction motor does have high torque when you need it for quick acceleration. I do like the combination of lane following, adaptive cruise control, and traffic jam assist; they make driving in heavy freeway traffic a breeze. I'm an older driver, so I do prefer the less aggressive style - let's call it "understated" rather than "conservative." And thank you for pointing out the battery vent; I'll be sure to keep that clean!
The 12.3" infotainment screen gets high marks from me. It's mounted high on the dash, so the road is still very much in view when I look at the screen. There's a short ledge in front of the screen, so you can brace your hand while touching the screen - no trying to hit a control with a "floaty finger" while driving. And in general, there's not much reason to touch the screen once you're moving. CarPlay works very well, with the ability to split the screen between maps, music, and the power flow display. iPhone and CarPlay can be a bit glitchy due to BlueTooth, but that is generally resolved by restarting the phone.
Overall, it's a great car, and I highly recommend it. It's a huge improvement over previous Accords; this is my fourth Accord!

I am fortunate enough to have a 2020 Clarity and I love it (although it may look a bit weird). I believe it uses essentially the same drive system that the current hybrids use. Most of us that own one really wish they did not discontinue the vehicle. I drive it in pure electric mode most of the time. Good review as always. I found a useful function for the "charge" mode. I changed the oil and want to start the ICE. But the battery has sufficient charge to operate on EV, so the ICE does not start. Select the charge mode and the ICE kicks in.

Have had a 2024 Accord Hybrid Sport for just over a month now, 1500 miles and love it. It’s in solar silver color which I actually love with the sport accents. Features-wise I do wish I went EX-L for heated seats, slightly better mpg, and regular tires instead of low profile that I worry will pop or damage a rim with every bump lol. But I’m fine with it as is with sport too, I’ll just gradually change stuff on it over time myself.
Averaging 43.4 mpg, some drives I get 36 if it’s highway, into wind, and engine didn’t get to warm up all the way. Others I’ve done 61 mpg for city driving in decently warm weather. On the highway for long drives without heavy wind or cold I get closer to 42-43

You must do an amazing amount of technical research to do these fantastic reviews on so many different makes. I would like to know if there is a battery longevity rating and also tire life on these EV's and hybrids.
    Very well done,
    Lee

Love that the "CVT" is really software, not mechanical with a torque converter, just simple shafts and a clutch. My only reservation is the battery. Hope that the cooling of that battery has been adequately addressed as this is the Achilles heel of hybrids.

I love the look of this accord, yes the civic is amazing and the accord will face a lot of competition from it, but this accord is the nicest one ever. Im just disappointed they discontinued 2L turbo and 10speed auto (V6 as well while we're at it). The hybrid is very nice though it just sucks you can get a better engine in a civic si than in the accord with the 1.5L turbo

Best thing i can say to explain honda quality is. My wife has a 23 accord hybrid. She has put 65k on it already. Im 6'4 350lbs. And when i do drive her car. I lean hard onnthe console to adjust my big ass. NO SQUEAKS. NO RATTLES. The console is Solid as a rock. Cant say the same for any other brand of vehicle ive owned.

I am 74 and all this tech is way over my head, I started my driving career with crank windows/ 3 speed on the column no power breaks no power steering no AC, carburetor and manual choke to start the car you turned the key to on and pushed a plunger thingy on the floor to crank it over. You do a good job of explaining the technology it is kind of like a train locomotive in a way. I am not sure I am ready to make the leap, I have a 2021 turbo 6 speed manual transmission with only 12,000 miles on the OD. My wife calls me an Auto Snob I have lost count of how many cars I have owned to date. I can't even shop for a new car unless I know alls the pluses and minus and have fully educated myself on any car I am looking at. Maybe next year I will test drive a Toyota and the Honda and see what I think. A turbo is nice to own but I would rather not have to micro manage it. Ill look around in 2025 and take some test drives.

It is paramount to keep clear the hybrid battery VENT (below the middle back seat) as stated in the video.
Don’t make the mistake of covering the vent with one of those fancy looking floormats. It is easy to overlook with detrimental consequences.
    Glad I watched this video!!

No one is buying an Accord for looks! The car isn’t ugly, but not striking either. To each its own. I have the car and it does what it was built to do, and it does so very well.

And to claim the overwrought styling of the Camry looks better is laughable. I actually prefer the Camry looks (exterior) to the 10th generation Accord…and we’re talking top trims for both. But the Camry is dated.

Just rented a new Accord hybrid for the 3rd time. I put about 890 mi on it for the 6 days that I had it. Drove it from the United States into Canada rode around Canada and then drove it back to the United States. I carefully watch the powertrain indicator to see which device was driving the wheels and which device was generating power to go into the batteries. I would accelerate hard to force it to go from say EV mode to ice engine mode, listening very carefully to see if I could hear the switch of the power source. I could not! With my 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid, I can definitely tell when it switches from one power source to another. However, the mileage that I got from the new car versus my 2020 is pretty much the same.
If I get another car it is definitely going to be a hybrid. And though the new Toyota hybrid has been introduced, it just doesn't appeal to me physically or in the interior, as the newer Honda Accord Hybrid.

I had this car. A 23 sport. It let me stranded 3 times because all the lights came on and there was no power steering. The molding on all the doors was warping and caused wind noise. The whole interior had to be stripped out by dealer to find a noise which ended up being a fuel line banging underneath the car. Probably one of the worst new cars I’ve ever owned.
