I am a 65-year-old Grandmother. My daughter has been mesmerised by the comebacks of Kendrick Lamar's notes, lyrics, and words. What I do know is Drake was never a match for this amazing lyricist.
@SportIsBad too
I sure he was hoping one of his ghost writers could bridge the gap.
Most of them wear wigs 😅😅 l was complimenting her hair wig okay😄. Not a fan of hers
Kendrick taught them to RESPECT THE CULTURE!! Don't mess with the real ones 🎉🎉🎉
They not like us feels like say it loud, I'm black I'm and I'm proud, it's a black thing you wouldn't understand, fight the power, love and unity for our culture, stop the violence movement all rolled up in one. I enjoyed the sight of it all.
💯
Kendrick Lamar is a Pulitzer Prize winning musician. I stood on the balcony of Low Library to witness his attendance at the ceremony. He is the only artist capable of reminding us of our roots.
The pop out is already saved on UA-cam.. watched it last night 😂
Emmy and Grammy winner too
Movement or not, it was a beautiful moment in hip hop history.
I'm a 58 year old woman and have fallen for Kdot. I finally understand "what for the culture means." His lyricism is crazy! I'm totally new to him.
He is not leading a movement, he is living one.
I am 47 years old and have been an admirer and supporter of Kendrick’s art since his Good Kid mAAd city album. This beef, however, made me a bonified fan. I’m going back to purchase all of the albums and features I missed.
Kendrick is tapped in to our musical past and often pulls on classic soul and R&B and jazz as the foundation for many of his songs.
He has intimate knowledge of the hood’s worst realities, and he talks about them without glorifying them. His art is always pointing toward overcoming and challenging yourself to reach new heights.
Most recently, his work has focused on growth through internal work, reflection, therapy, and interrupting our toxic patterns.
All of this was present in the beef with Drake. Kendrick out-penned, “out-artistried,” out-cultured, out-taught, and out-strategized his opponent. There was no contest.
He stood up for Black family and collective healing. He defended women and Black women, in particular. He called out rampant sexual abuse in the industry and beyond.
He also blazed a stark line between the industry and the culture. He helped his fans to see that what they may have been fooled into thinking was Black culture is actually just racist stereotyping and mass-dissemination of the most nihilistic and lethal aspects of the poor and poorly educated Black experience.
For folks who have been deceived by the relentless beats, catchy bars, and cool videos, this was a moment of much-needed clarity for them.
The Pop Out was a culmination of the thesis he had presented during the beef. It was about defending home, standing up to popular bullies and calling out shallow impostors, seeing “enemies” as fam and neighbors, and being happy for and with each other.
Some folks won’t see it. It’s cool. This moment was awesome for those of us who do.
I thoroughly enjoyed your thoughts & knowledge of this experience. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.
@@alexmarsh-adams3922 Thanks for hanging in there and reading it all! I know it was A LOT. 😄
Everything you said was spot on ❤
I agree 1000% 👍🏾
Me toooooo
Karen, I loved seeing those men so happy and in their joy together. They deserve that!
Fellow GenXr here, I also slept on Kendrick. I just discovered him since the beef, but haven’t stopped listening to his music since. He is a brilliant rapper, artist, MC. He picked up where 2Pac left off. Take a deep dive into his music. Knowing that we aren’t the target audience per se, 😂, but that boy good!! He will go down in history as one of the best.
To Pimp a Butterfly and Mr Morale and the Big Steppers are brilliant masterpieces
Yes, I have children Kendricks age and I grew up in the Caribbean and rap music was not a genre of music that we listened to. My my sons are huge fans of the genre, I always thought they were listening to cuss music. I actually started listening to Kendricks music and he is a talent and a half. A talent from a different dimension. God ordained if you believe in a higher power. I can't stop listening. I have to keep going back to fully understand the meaning of some of the lyrics. The concert was monumental.
What was it about Kendrick that didn’t hook you?
Wow this is weird to hear for me as a millennial…the same age as Drake & Kendrick I’ve experienced both of their music in real time so it’s hard to believe people are just now discovering Kendrick 🫨
@@CoolForSale it’s exactly why Drake lost the beef. Rap had become silly and commercialized. I grew up on rap/hip hop, KRS-One, LL, Whodini, Public Enemy, Pac…I couldn’t believe people thought Drake from Degrassi was some great rapper. I thought I had just aged out of the system. 🤷🏽♀️😆 Basically just found other genres I liked better and I have playlists spanning decades of music that I listen to often.
We must protect this brother. What he did by uniting the gangs and all the people. Was amazing and a definite win against the power structure. Trust me our open enemies were watching too. Remember in the movie Malcolm X, when the cop said “ that man has too much power”. That’s what we witnessed Wednesday night in LA. An awakening is taking place worldwide. It’s a good time to be Black and Proud✊🏾. For the ancestors. We are all we got!
Kendrick is the proof of good artist being being limited vs an average artist being manufactured. One artist being from the hood and doesn't promote hood culture vs the manufactured artist not being from the hood and promoting hood stereotypes.
on stage with gangbangers?
This is a good observation.
what hood stereotypes does drake promote?
We need to take back our music.
Drake can manufacture a hit but he doesn’t know us. Those who are birthed in hip hop don’t feel Drake because he isn’t cultured. He doesn’t get our idioms. This is why Kendrick hits a nerve because Drake is not true to himself so he is impostering what he thinks is black
So biracial people ain’t a part of the culture?
Shows ai has +/- but cant compete with human mind....
His father is black.
Since Hip Hop was weaponized I thought it was good to see the discussion about true artistry vs product placement. My only thing is that I’m hoping they leverage this power of unity into economic and community development.
It was a proud moment for the culture.❤
That photo at the end was epic .l was moved!
The Best concert for Blacks this generation. Please give it the full credit that it was. I also am an old head, My children deserve an artist like Kendrick. Chicago Blues here, best festivals I’ve been to as a youth. (70’s baby)
The best concerts for blacks this generation?? Really? C'mon now
Say BLACK PEOPLE, mutha*****🤬
The number of people in the comments ignoring or not being able to understand that the music and artists are being used to make a point that is beyond the music and artists is very sad. I know many want to pat ourselves on the back for how woke and conscious we are, but don't forget to leave the smug self-righteousness behind.
it's okay...the masses NEVER get it until it's too late (that's on history). And good news: we don't need everybody to get it...just a few committed, workers.

Tell em Karen the cook out is Real
Why is it different when it comes out of Kendrick lamar mouth?
@mr.w3369 It's not. This ain't so much kendrick love as it is drake hatred. This song is being blown way out of proportion because of how desperate people were to see drake fall.
😅😃I'm just too old for this😂😂
no, you're not.
I'm 74 so I think not 😅😅💃🏾💃🏾 great exercise music 🎵 along with truth. Didn't know it was being streamed. A proud moment everyone coming together 👊🏾✌🏾🙋🏾💙 That's what I was celebrating
I grew up listening to music created by talented artistes who understood themselves and their culture. Artistes who sang about love and relationships and enjoying life. Artistes who when they sang, either the hairs on your neck stood up or you just had to dance. Artistes who were not pandering to mainstream tastes. It is no coincidence that the music that has become mainstream is the music which for the most part disrespects our past and present. Music that would embarrass the ancestors.
🙄
You hit the nail on the head. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
I maintain that our past music experiences were the envy of the world. But maybe we are the only ones that don’t know that.
"Artist" but I hear you.
@@l.c.1704 An artist draws or paints. An artiste is an entertainer, either a singer or dancer.
Karen if you could bring yourself to sit with the Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers project or better yet the To Pimp a Butterfly album you would have a much better appreciation of the artist Kendrick is!
PAY ATTENTION!!!❤✊🏿

Preach it sista. Music was real back then. 😂😂😂
I ignored Kendrick because I’m a back in the day kinda lady too, but Kendrick is GOOD!! It’s not for ppl who cringe at profanity, but it’s definitely REAL MUSIC. Without a doubt.
Came here for the truth. Kdot is definitely be nominated for ANOTHER Pulitzer, this time for Peace based upon the effort and UNITY demonstrated on Juneteenth in Los Angeles and beyond.
What is SO telling is that it isn't being highlighted on mainstream media and its significance.🤔 Crickets...
Thank God for platforms like Professor Karen's and those adjacent to hers.💯
We can do this TOGETHER!!!!! It's an absolute BEAUTIFUL thing!!!!👌🏽😍💪🏽🎉😊
The Pop-out was a classic display of community versus the machine! Hip-hop is so bad now that, its hard to call it music. A lot of it has a negative purpose. Meaning it's moved farther away from what the original founders designed it to be.
"Crafted Artist" Thank you for naming the thing that perfectly defines Drake and his ilk ! ! 😊
A Wattstax for this generation. Story telling, community and possibility.
There's a snippet on Video music box where James Brown's shuffle is caught as a zap by Bob Marley. This is the feeling.
k-Dot is bringing Hip Hop back!! THANK GAWD! Never liked Drake or this era of Hip Hop! Kendrick gracias! Been a Kendrick fan since 2013!
I get so emotional, it was beautiful. I saw it live and I felt like I was there. I also think it says a lot… because in many ways our culture, the industry has been co-op’d… taken over. Where these record label owns the masters of the greats all the way back before Cadillac record (hello Etta James and so many more). Where they personal were monetarily taken advantage of… and in many ways the battle and concert… how Kendrick moves through the industry is a protest to that. Like Drake… imitates our culture and he is inauthentic… when he speaks about our culture in other clips that have surfaced… it is as if he didn’t like it, don’t respect, but profiteers off of it without awareness to his debauchery. So Ms. Karen… I think you would appreciate more of what went down and this beef as you uncover the other side of this and why there is a disdain for Drake and what Kendrick is saying in all his moves. The comment in drakes “response” to euphoria and 6:16… he calls all African Americans SLAVES… that was infuriating. But because Drake is clueless about our culture and past, he thought that line was okay. In “Not Like Us” Kendrick gives some Atlanta history about how the white man profited off of black bodies and then informs Drake of how he is doing it today… then ends with the punching line of calling homeboy a colonizer… because that is what he is; A modern day colonizer. I enjoy your topics and show keep it up. Thank you. ❤😊 8:11
Kendrick Lamar was named after Eddie Kendricks so there’s the bridge between him and past great talent of our culture. I am now saying he is the modern version of Bob Marley. I honestly believe a movement has started. I love your commentary so much, Karen. Thank you as always!
Aw stop it with the modern version of Bob Marley?? Really?? Stop it
I also hope that this is a thing that will be sustained by all of us. I love to see US gain momentum, regardless the lane. Our art is so valuable that EVERYONE will try to exploit or imitate or take credit, and then turn around and tell us that "Black doesn't sell overseas", or "you need to try to reach a 'broader' (read: white) audience." People like Kendrick remind us that WE are powerful together. They don't understand that our art is our survival, our stories, our call to prayer, call to arms, and so many other things. They are so afraid of exclusion that they don't like to not know what we are doing. When they see how easily we CAN come together, it gives them them the "willies" for sure. That is how Kendrick knows he is doing something right. I am SO here for it!
Power To The People!
✊🏾
@@anthonytaylor7928Exactly. Love the song. Kendrick definitely won this battle. Let's not get carried away!!!!
I’m 65 an a longtime Kendrick Lamar fan. I remember when rap/hip hop emerged. Went to college 25 minutes outside NYC. But funk,go go, jazz, punk rock pop and even classical are on my playlist. The Pop Out concert visually and sound quality was superior. However, the larger message was connection. Where I felt some kinda way is wishing we would come together for the betterment of our community
I was born in 80. I grew up on Anita, Luther, Earth Wind Fire, Lionel, Gladys, Teddy. But I also grew up with Hip Hop which did not take away my appreciation 4 the GREATS before. I know Hip Hop wldn't be here if not 4 them. I love artists, that have substance & Kendrick has plenty. Always bn a Fan of him from the Start.
Karen, this just shows that we are power in numbers. It’s unfortunate that Drake had to be the catalyst for this but when you see the “Pop Out”, it is US as black people united. Reminded me of the black folks cook out. ❤❤❤❤
he started it...Drake should NEVER have bothered that man.
Like you said a few weeks ago, THIS IS SPIRITUAL!!!
@2:15. Karen makes a great point about “fake behavior” with slaves as a result of their circumstances and environment. Fun fact about a common misnomer in society about “Alpha” and “Beta” males or people; that idea came from flawed research on Wolves *in captivity* not out in the wild. They’re more communal and less hierarchical in the wild, and more hierarchical/interpersonal dominance based in captivity. But our society has unfortunately taken the false interpretation and applied it to human behavior
Celebrating like we did in the 70s.
54 year old , compton native, rap historian . This is a moment. You have to understand L.A. gang culture. The history of gang banging in Southern California tells us the good feeling will be smashed by some young dude who is mad because his ignorance needs to be heard and will make him go against the grain. I went against the grain during the 92 peace treaty out of ignorance . I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. SO YES, THIS IS A MOMENT. Furthermore, I know it has become an iconic moment for the world to see, but it wasn't about race . It was about K Dot pointing out to Drake, that he can't talk tough without the cultural understanding of what that kind of ego comes from. What I saw was a direct shot at Drake for his middle-class upbringing, but talking like he has the actual experience. I like K Dot on a technical rap level . I like Drake on a clever ride and bump my music level. Let's be honest we don't ride around and bump K Dot. WE DONT! But Drake, WE DO! K Dot is math. Drake is relaxation. MM is feared lyrically, but we don't ride around playing his music. Drake is how you party, but we don't talk about him when we discuss math. The battle was even until DJ MUSTARD beat surfaced. It became the knockout blow. Growing up I was taught, you don't have to win the fight as long as you fight. Drake fought, but Kendrick used math and showed him , " I'm from the culture, and I'll show you." Sorry for the loooooooong answer, but it is only a moment. Excuse the errors
I am all for it🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
I watched the entire thing on Amazon Prime.
So is it possible for me to watch it now?
I watched the show on Amazon Prime and enjoyed it. I've lived in South Central for a good portion of my life and have appreciation for all types of music. I thought him bringing the different sets together was pretty historic. I thought it interesting that the local media was pretty much silent on this. Had a fight broke out or a shooting, it would have been all over the news.
Professor you nailed it again I felt all of that. Those were my days also thanks for the journey it was good for the soul in these weird times. 👍💯
If we can get the youngsters in the streets to stop fighting each other & pull towards some collective good....i think the ppl being critical of Wed event is missing an opportunity .... Did the parents of our civil rights leaders jump on board with their protests.... What we should b doing is merging our collective fights into one against WS & for a better tomorrow¡!

Yes, it’s a movement. Kendrick called out a Tom operative.
Does that pay your bills. I think not. Far more important things to focus on
Mad cuz Drake the Fake lost. Wipe your tears & take a seat
@@stopiwantoff7965 I could care less about either of them
Gangbangers do way more damage to the community than rapping singers
There is absolutely nothing wrong with holding on to the past. Especially when it comes to music as a 90s kid I prefer that compared to today. But I'll be honest and give credit where it is do. Kendrick has always stayed true to who he is and where he's come from. What he raps about and how he does it. We all know PRINCE didn't do a lot of music with rappers but he did with Kendrick. That in itself says alot. But I have always liked his music promoting BLACK people. Let's not forget he did the Black Panther sound track and what people felt about that movie when it came out. Music has the power to move people and Unite folks. Kendrick is doing that with the culture of rap in mind.
I was blessed to be at the Juneteenth Pop Out concert in person. It WAS as electrifying as it looks and sounds via the video streams now circulating on social media. 🙂I have rewatched the streams and the Response videos numerous times! 😀Can't get enough.
Are you serious? We've heard this story before. As Malcolm said, we give too much attention and credit to our entertainers and not our thinkers. If this continues, we'll never get anywhere as a people....
Bloods and Crips on the same stage… TOGETHER?!
Who else is brokering peace?
@@FedUpSista It happened after the 92 riots and it didn't last, also Snoop and the Game brought together a truce as well. The result was the same....

My dad says every generation, as they age, thinks they grew up in the glory days of music. He starts mentioning Motown and the Spinners and Ray Charles, and I can see his point of view.
Karen thank you for speaking briefly about the contradictions of utilizing the n word. Kendrick is a gifted artist. And I do like his music. I first felt lifted when I heard his song, "We gonna be Alright". Yet, Im praying he and others will awaken to the truth of embracing this venomous n-word. There's no other community that embraces a vile word that was used to assault our mind, body, and spirit and then claim it as their own with a "twist" of a letter. It's absurd!!! I aways ponder when folks claim they are spiritually enlightened and talk and walk and hear from God. Yet, they seem to never get enlightened that the n word is not the Creator's image of us. We are the image of the IAM. Therefore we are IAM. The n word is fulfilling the purpose of the deceiver--to destroy the image and likeness of the IAM for generation to generation. My grandmother would constantly say, "my heart bleeds". Now I understand her lamenting that our people have walked into the den of deception.
I've liked so many of Kendrick sins without realizing he was the same guy. Hes one of best storytelling artists ever. Good kid Maad city has most of the hits i didn't realize were his.
Being in media and unaware of Kendrick is telling about the disconnect in our community and the lack of generational leadership.

BBL Drizzy he's not like us Lil Wayne told him to be. himself he wants to be gangsta but he's not he should've been like Eminem true to self .oh yeah you haven't heard a peep out of the national media because that's not a story shameful.
Love Kendrick, love the song, but as a black woman who was born in the Caribbean and now live in Canada. I have to say that I just don’t understand the younger generation. I don’t understand why they don’t have respect for what out ancestors went through. Why do any black artist think it’s okay to use the N-word so freely when so much pain, heartache, and Dehumanizing have come from racist people calling our people that word. When will our people wake up and realize that we’re making ourselves so small on the world stage when we use that word like it’s candy. Our people have to do better.
this isn't even a "younger generation" discussion or beef. It's much deeper. I'm loving it.
So it was beautiful for him/Americans to diss the rest of the diaspora and say, " they're not like us??? " This is why AA's will always have problems. At a time when we should be coming together, you rally behind an ENTERTAINER you'll eventually drag down in distancing/dissing the rest of the diaspora, all from a " rap beef." The Caucasians that own these companies made more money off this than any of the rappers, they're the ones paying you to call yourself the, "N word." They make themselves more money from that than when they called you N......
your ignorance of who is the THEY is really weird...From Kool Here to Busta the culture has ALWAYS included Black people from different places. You're either not Black OR you're not steeped in the culture (like Drake) and therefore are clueless about the source of this beef. And it's okay to be ignorant. It's NOT okay to remain ignorant.
@KarenHunterShow Please tell me who the " THEY" he's talking about then because your fellow AA's have been online using that song to diss/insult everyone else from the diaspora. So either you exist in a Kumbaya bubble or you're not aware of what's going on outside of your podcast. You're talking about Busta and Kool Herc, like they enjoyed love from AA's, why not include how afraid Herc was to link hip hop to the islands, why not talk about all the bullying they got because they were from the Caribbean. I don't have an issue with you, you're part of the 15% that has sense but your downfall is that you spend most of your time defending foolishness done by the 85%. Don't look at this from inside the 15%, look at it from how the 85% is seeing it ...nothing I said was a lie
@KarenHunterShow Notice how you QUICKLY went to, " you're not " black".... you can clearly see my picture....why do AA's do that also, " black " is one of the dumbest things people with brown skin can choose to call themselves. Why not Gold, " we " come from the Gold Coast, there's value in the word if you need to go by a colour, why fight to hold on to the lowest possible denominator. Any time y'all feel attacked, which I wasn't doing, you end up copying the same people that hate you and treat you badly, you turn into dark skin Karens, with the, " you're not like us, you're not from here crap. I'm the same exact skin colour as you, hell, I even have Ramses 3rd as an ancestor and I'm well-versed in the culture, both mine and yours

@@timotheewilliams9086 No clue...but seems as if people are in their feelings about a lot of things. There seems to be a need to be outraged and mad. It's very immature. These emotions represent powerlessness.
Kendrick doesn’t get to lead this movement Until he can explain why he was defend iggy azalea from being dragged for culture appropriation in 2015….he can shut up about Drake.
At least take time to observe the event before trying to leech off it for your gain. An opinion video about an event you didn’t even pay enough attention to catch is extremely off putting. Respect those you use for personal gain enough to support their works especially if you have the gumption to disparage their music and language.
With all due respect Older folks worried about issues like people saying Negus or the music without being able to providing our youth with an economic infrastructure business and wealth to pass down is a way bigger cop out. Stop wagging fingers and help provide resources.
I would leave Stevie, MJ, Prince out of this. Stay in the realm of Hip Hop music. Sorry (not sorry), but I'm not feeling his music. The production sounds lazy and uncreative.
no. You can't leave any of them out of this. you don't know what you're talking about here. Or perhaps you don't know what we're talking about.
You not us.
@@cjmack8153 this.
1. You should watch the pop out concert.
2. How are you going talk about Kendrick being on the negus tip, but then you have a pseudo Pan-Africanist, Greg Carr, on your show. Sounds very hypocritical.🤷🏾♂️
I have now.
live show...radio...live.
Peace To The Gods! Kendrick is mad wack! I was talking to my man from Staten (Shaolin) about this. We both concurred. Sun is wack. I said it. Can you talk about Pete Rock & Commons new joints they’re mad 😡 fire 🔥! Pyro 🧨 fire lava….Common ripped it…Pete Laced the track. Peace
If you don't like him okay. But your opinion and your friends will not change anything.
Talk to your gods about it son.
@@l.c.1704 The Black man is God. I’m God. Symbolic to the Sun. hahaha…I used to work for Eric B! I know far more about hip hop than the average individual! Yes he’s wack. Now let’s talk about Common and Pete Rock!
Blackface has gone digital people. Beware of agitators like this..person. Ain't no East coast v West coast beef these days, how lame of you to try to shoehorn one in.
I would rather hear Ice Cube talking bout politicians and presidents than two young cats dissing each other. we need to be monolithic sometime with our vote, how do we become a force unless we can agree on one problem at a time to fight for.My family ls half dark skinned and half lighter skinned which side should I hate ?
