I applaud you for sharing your NM experience. I have a bit of a different take. As a non melanated human, I go out of my way to purchase from, do business with, support people of African descent to in some small way try to start to level the playing field. I guess someone could call this racist but to me it is just what has to happen if we are ever going to approach equality. Love your work, many blessings to you.

I feel like to right thing would have been to select a black (or POC) employee to help from the beginning of your shopping experience. The commission would have went to the person that helped and you would have been selecting who you dollars go to. I have been working on being more intentional when selected where I spend my money.

I don’t think you were being racist- as whether or not you gave the commission to the non black lady wasn’t dependent on her race and hatred of her race. I’m sure no matter what the lady’s race was you would prefer to give the commission to the black ladies. A racist would have denied the lady her commission because of her race and hatred of her. If the black sales lady wasn’t there I’m sure you wouldn’t have had a problem giving the non black lady your business. Big difference imo.

Prof. Hunter, I know you didn't want showings of appreciation for your decision to give credit to the non-Black sales clerk. But, it is a rare and transparent look into the small-scale acts we perform dozens of times daily that shape the world into one of integrity, humility, and equity. I think your vulnerability and honesty about your thought process was inspiring to me. I have similar struggles navigating my own bottled up rage at White Supremacy that at times I project onto well-meaning, decent, thoughtful human beings who happen to check the box 'white" on the census. I appreciate your example as someone who is clearly pro-Black, but also pro-humanity and pro-equity in all forms. I wouldnt' have faulted you for giving the commission to a Black sales clerk and probably would have tried to do the same myself. But, as my wise and wonderful therapist said, all we need to do when we encounter bias is simply pause and question it. You did that and it displayed a wonderful object lesson. I've rambled enough. Thank you for your example and your light.

This is a great conversation, that I wish we could have openly more often. I think the reality is that race is so ingrained in our culture, and therefore our individual and collective minds, that it is nearly impossible to be completely innocent of some level of racial bias or racism. For me personally, I always think about this time where, long story short, I made a quick reactive decision to lock my car doors while making a delivery for work, and immediately realized it had to do with the fact I saw a black man walking near my car. Like she says, it felt really horrible to come to the realization that I had a racist instinct, but at the same time the only way we get better is to own that, be aware of it going forward, and try to be better. Acting like it didn't happen solves nothing.

Karen, I feel you. I have had moments like this, as well. I don't believe in justifying bad behavior...even if nobody is going to call you out for it. I am likely to seek out my people in commission situations. But if somebody else does the work, THEY earned their money. "If you can't beat 'em join 'em," mindsets will only ensure that EVERYONE gets mistreated. My mother taught me that you do the right thing. Period. Have I always? Nope...but I learned from it because I HATED the feeling of having allowed my own morals to slip...even if NOBODY thought it was a big deal but me. I do not believe that we are "hindered" by a moral compass. It is there to guide us, redirect us, even even stop us in our tracks from going the wrong way. We can always choose to listen.

Let's agree to disagree in love. 😊Why? Explore why we are unable to put ourselves first. There's conditioning involved on our side, for sure. "They" count on it. It's how the status quo stays in place. It's rare we have opportunities to choose us. People behave the way they do because they can. Economic advantages for us are rare. ❤️💚🖤 They don't think twice before robbing us in all areas of activity. 🤔Why?

I don't know about this specific scenario.
Is buying Black with intentionality racist, as well?
The thing is, those ladies never receive the grace you were willing to give their colleague - and you KNOW THAT. You were doing, in my opinion, what all affirmative action does - level the playing field and give more opportunity where you know there is a lack of it.
I'm not mad at your decision, though, and I'm not mad that the sister said she was going to give it to her co-worker, anyway.
I think we actually need to give Black people credit for NOT being racist and leave us with the power to do the right thing.
    I believe we will.

Racism is about power. I would say it is bigotry, not racism.

Only black people are so conditioned in this system that we think racial loyalty is wrong. Its an indicator of our deep sense of justice which I agree with Karen is, on an individual level, something black souls don't abide by. However your individual dollars do not represent the kind of institutional power and racialized cooperation used to disenfranchise black folks. Karen should NOT feel guilty for trying to use her dollars to benefit a black person at the expense of a white person. It may feel wrong but black folks with money should slant the field in our favor just so we have a chance to rise up from a negative position in this world, to just get to 0. So I respect her kind and decent heart but we are trapped in an anti black capitalist world and the only way out is for us to start putting every dollar possible towards our own, which ALL other races in this world have done for themselves

Is that racist or bias? It seems bias because you wanted to support someone who looks like yourself. Idk if that was racist.

    1 John 1:9
If WE confess OUR sins, he is faithful and just to Forgive US OUR sins, and to cleanse US from all unrighteousness. If We say that We have NOT sinned, WE make him a liar, and his word is not in US.
    Acts 3:19
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,
