You can hear the prog influences in this excellent track. JPJ added some nice colors which really make the track as a whole stand out on the album. Love the live version also from 1973 at MSG. Love these guys reactions to the classic rock I grew up with all those years ago.
JPJ is a walking talking, playing musical note, he is in my top 3 bass and top 10 keyboard players of all time, plus one of the greatest producers studio masters ever, it is unfair he and Page were not only master musicians but would have been at the top of the list for what they did at the mixing board.
I always said that if there is such a thing as a magical song it's No Quarter. It's sick chemistry between the band members. The No Quarter riff is the coolest guitar riff ever.
That's the word I was looking for when I made mention of ELP's barbarian. whatever that effect that's on Jimmy's guitar Greg lake's guitar has the same fuzz effect on his guitar but Less polished much more denser and upfront in the mix and very menacing.
I believe on the Barbarian, that's a Maestro Fuzztone or some similar circuit on bass guitar. Page is likely using a Solasound Tone bender Mkii but I'm not sure. He is known for using that effect for the majority of his fuzz tones.
I'll say the same about Black Sabbath, Rush, Pink Floyd etc... But you aren't wrong. Zeppelin is themselves. Wide range. Great songs across the spectrum.
Bonzo's grove is off the charts. His use of ghost notes, his foot pedal patterns with a puncy snare and bass drum sound takes this song to another level.
I started high school in 1969. Led Zeppelin stood out from all the other bands at that time. I was into the Motown sound before Zeppelin came out. The Spinners, O'Jays, Commodores, Etta James to a name a few, and when Led Zeppelin's first album came out I really didn't know what to think. It was such a radical departure from everything else being put out at that time. A time when The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and The Who were rocking out as well. But Zeppelin was different from all of them. 4 musical genius' came together and were able to blend their genius into mind-blowing songs. Songs that sounded very different from the other songs on the album and different from songs on any of their albums. My musical tastes range from Percy Sledge to Fiona Apple to Everlast. I consider Zeppelin a once in a lifetime group that I was fortunate enough to enjoy in the prime of my youth.
Of all the songs in their catalog, this one probably has the most variety in live shows, with JPJ doing extended solos on organ and grand piano, moving in all possible directions, and varying widely from night to night. As great as the studio cut is, the live versions are simply amazing.
One of the greatest songs ever, by anyone, never mind it is the mighty Led Zeppelin. They just have so many colors in their audio palette, so many different kinds of rock songs but always different and great in their own way tunes. This is utterly classic in studio, one of the best headphones songs you can test a pair with. Live, it takes on a life of its own and runs 10 to 20 minutes and Jimmy and JPJ get plenty of room to solo. Great tune guys, the journey continues. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Also, yes, the production and engineering on their albums is second to none, the only 2 other bands who I get those kinds of vibes on their studio mastery are Pink Floyd and the WHO on their best albums. You just get to a certain level and all the rest of us can do is listen in awe. 🎧

This song would become Jonesy's showpiece when performed live and could last 20 minutes or more. He would improv through a keys solo and add things like bits of classical, jazz, blues...whatever he felt. This definitely has a bit of prog-rock feel as they always tried to explore the obscure paths of music. They got the underwater-like piano sound by processing Jonesy's Hohner ElectraPiano through a synth. There are so many musical textures and techniques here including synth washes, synth soloing, Moog Taurus pedals and an uncharacteristically jazzy guitar solo from Jimmy. According to engineer Andy Johns, they got the buzzy guitar sound by using a couple of compressors and direct injection into the mixer; it was a technique similar to the one they used for Black Dog. The overall thick sound happened in part by Jimmy using vari-speed to slow it down. The lyrics touch on Robert's continued fondness for legends, lore, and battles fought both real and fantasy as he describes soldiers "wearing steel that's bright and true" travelling possibly through a mountain range (the "winds of Thor" could be Mount Thor, a Canadian mountain range) during a blizzard. They will show "no quarter" as they "carry news that must get through". This is a dark, moody masterpiece.

No doubt! “Graffiti” is the band’s most “complete” and diverse record. Because of the events that unfolded in 1975 and beyond, it’s the last truly great Zep album. But first: “The Ocean”!
This became one of their top most played songs live, over a hundred xs once it dropped. There is at least 1 live version that is a whopping 45min long. And no one complains. Absolute monster song
Yes and somewhere there is a Dazed and Confused approaching that length. Bands like them, Mountain, Hot Tuna and others actually had the jamming skills to play long and ever changing versions of their greatest songs, like who plays a 20+ minute song now, never mind a 30 or 40+ minute jam?
For me, Bonham's swinging drum groove is still the most incredible thing about this song. He hardly ever does 16th notes on the hi-hats, so this remains one of the best studies of his dynamics and I love it. It's close to mystic.
They never made anything but great records the reason I have them slightly ahead of Pink Floyd, who had mixed results before Meddle and especially Dark Side of the Moon.
Wait until you check this out live at MSG. After you go through their studio catalog then you can dive into their live stuff. The Zeppelin rabbit hole is deep and winding.
As they have gone through the whole catalogue, it would be nice to see them double back and cover live versions of their favorites after they finish with the studio recordings...
This was a beautiful keyboard part brought in by John Paul Jones (who didn't sign the pact with the Devil) and Jimmy and Robert made it evil and eerie sounding - and Robert wrote somewhat mysterious lyrics, but those lyrics are about Bonzo, Robert and Jimmy signing a pact with the Devil. The lyrics are somewhat disguised. No Quarter = no mercy - when you sign a pact with the Devil - you can't ask for mercy or expect mercy. You get whatever misfortune or triumph which comes along, bc you signed your soul away. The tour following the release if this album was mammoth and record setting in rock history. They broke The Beatles single act attendance record at Tampa Stadium on the 2nd date of the tour - May 5th, 1973. Houses was released on March 28th, 1973. Look the lyrics up - "...the Devil mocks their every step..." "...they choose the path where no one goes..."
No Quarter live at MSG 1973 is the best performance. Ever. A close second is Since I’ve Been Loving You live at MSG. You will be blown away by anything from that show.
Now I know what my face looked like 50 years ago when I first heard this. You guys are priceless. Now the next song up is my personal favorite on this album. You two have so much more in store with this next album. Enjoy and thank you!! 🎶🎼🎵🎸
My favourite Zeppelin album as well. The live version from The Song Remains the Same is amazing. The keyboard and guitar solos will blow your mind. And now your socks will be blown off by The Ocean. "We've done four already, but now we're steady and then they went one, two, three, four." Enjoy.
I remember as a kid about 8 yrs old in late 70s an early 80s that I use to think that Led zeppelin, Black sabbath, pink Floyd, AC/DC were all from my town, because everybody back then had these band freaking screaming out their car stereo with windows down... That's all you heard, now it seems I'm the only one who's volume is all the way up in my truck while riding
No Quarter was a term in Medieval warfare that meant the ability to surrender....No quarter meant no surrender and no prisoners taken....The bass player John Paul Jones also played keyboards as well as mandolin.
Essentially yes. No quarter means 'no mercy' in other words no prisoners taken. To give no quarter is to give no mercy. To ask no quarter is to ask for no mercy - a fight to the death. It comes from the idea that if you accept prisoners you have to 'quarter' them (find accommodation for them).
I’m 64 years old I listen to Led Zeppelin since 1968 and I agree they are the best aunt ever I have other albums and there’s so many great songs in this line it’s the best band ever 😮❤❤
I think what I love the best about these reaction videos, even though I've listened this song probably a couple 100 times, is I get to go back and it feels like I'm hearing it again for the first time. It's great, thanks guys!
I remember it was late, like 3 in the morning, the lights were down with the stereo up, and the whole place was trippin. It had been a fairly large party, an every one who came was cool, but that was just how '75 was. Somewhere in the first 40 seconds of "No Quarter", the clouds that filled the room changed the place, the space, the time. We were in that strange smoky tumult with its muffled moans and final cries of the wounded and dying. It was the loud deep silence that follows a raging and deafing hand to hand fight to the death of tens of thousands of men, with those who won being so diminished in number, that executing the wounded enemy would require much time.
I gave a rebuilt 1978 125w receiver, a technics turntable, and a pair of JBL studio monitors. It’s even more amazing through a quality hi-fi system, if you can believe that.
This was JPJ's masterpiece. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but you spoke again of how well they all play together, so I'll mention it again. The live version (at MSG, about 10 mins) of Dazed and Confused is incredible. It's Dazed and Confused alright, but they go off on a tangent or two and it's just seamless. Jammin'.
This song live could go for 30-35 minutes some nights, and listening to the interplay between JPJ, Page and Bonham is so incredible! You have to check out some good quality live performances too! Because it wasn’t rehearsed, it was all groove and feel between the band that led the song all over the place and then back to it’s roots! Simply an Amazing Band, individually and collectively, light and shade.
Wait for the next album...zeppelin always surprising...but no quarter is on my Top 5 songs...masterpiece...watch it live from 1973, with video...just killer
The first time I heard this song, my buddy and I went on a cruise and smoked some good weed. This song blew my mind, and it became my favorite instantly. Gives me goosebumps still.
One of fav’s! Hell, they’re all my fav’s! 😆🤣 You get that heavy bottom end sound whenever the guitar & bass play unison lines. Makes the lows THICK! ……as a brick!🎸 ..& Paige did use some crafty-sometimes innovated effects/equipment for that time. He gave the guitars lots of different tones/textures, etc. & yes, JPJ is that damn good! You were correct in saying “they were all masters of their crafts!”
I can't even count how many times I've been completely wasted, or tripping balls listening, or watching this during my college years. Sure i never graduated, but I woke up a whole different side of my mind.
Great for 65 yr old who grew up with this music since 12, to see u guys appreciate "our" music. I think the common denominator is R&B. The Stones, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath....all considered themselves a "blues band". And who doesn't love R&B?
This is probably my favorite Zep tune, it speaks to my soul- it’s incredible! If you want to hear no quarter live audio, there is a double album called “ the song remains the same” . I sure hope you are going to react to all the live songs from this 1976 release. And there’s also a album called “ coda” put together with left over bits and pieces & left over songs after the band broke up( after in through the out door. Please react to those mentioned also, they are legit records and I know your fans ( which I am one of your most dedicated) , would love to see your reactions. They will blow you away. You two guys are incredible- thanks a lot and many blessings to you guys 🇺🇸
The comment about how watching you they now know what their face looked liked the first time hearing their music. Same. Your doing this allows us to recapture some of that first-time listening back in the '70's. I was 7, almost 8. First listen was at my older cousin's house. The next day I started hitting up the neighbors to mow lawns/wash cars or if they had any "Coke" bottles to return for cash to raise the $6 or $8 to buy my own copy. I'm SO enjoying your chronological journey through their catalog.
There isn't a bad song on the whole album. It's a masterpiece. Produced by Mr. Page himself, along with Glyn Johns. Jimmy was a stickler as a producer and it really shows in every single track.
Another great reaction guys. Such a classic and unique song. Fully agree with everyone suggesting the 1973 live No Quarter performance from MSG -- it is a must watch. Jimmy's solo in that one is beyond belief. And, lucky you, you still have three more Zep albums to go (actually four counting Coda which is great too); next one up is Physical Graffiti, my personal favorite. But you can't go wrong with the mighty Zep. Love your work gentlemen, keep it up!

It’s so hard to pick a favorite album because they are all great and different at the same time.
You guys are the best your next song you’re gonna love his Achilles last stand recommended by me off the album presents good job guys
Look the lyrics up - "...the Devil mocks their every step..."
"...they choose the path where no one goes..."
Are ya serious right now? 😮
No Quarter live at MSG 1973 is the best performance. Ever. A close second is Since I’ve Been Loving You live at MSG. You will be blown away by anything from that show.
From the Song Remains the Same concert movie for Since I've been Loving You is the best version.
It sounds great even after all these years! 💿🎹🎸🥁🎧
ZEPPELIN BEST BAND EVER…I STAND BY THAT 55 YEARS LATER!!!
Warms my heart to see young folk like yourselves become Zeppelin fans! Like I did, way back when!
Led Zepplin have a lot of great songs, but this is one of the best.
Always been my fav Zep tune 😊
I forgot how good this is. Haven't listened to in years and years.
"The Ocean" will Rock You Both Hard, Zeppelin Style. 1 2 3 4 Ready For That SNARE
At the threshold of your destiny: They ask no mercy, they give no mercy. Possibly my favorite Led Zeppelin song of all time.
"Walking side-by-side with death
The devil mocks their every step."
What a great lyric!
Now just imagine being a teenager back in the seventies and hearing this for the first time. 🤯
I think that was probably Page's greatest triumph as producer, in miking up Bonzos kit like he did. It gave Zeppelin that incredible bottom end.
I’m 64 years old I listen to Led Zeppelin since 1968 and I agree they are the best aunt ever I have other albums and there’s so many great songs in this line it’s the best band ever 😮❤❤
The live version from the Song Remains The Same live DVD (or audio) is the greatest thing Zepplin has ever done as far as I'm concerned.
Hands down my favorite Zeppelin album. Love them all, but this one is special.
Yeah, man..there's just something about Houses of the Holy...
Jammin'.
Your reactions are hilarious im in my 60s and throwing newspapers at 5 am listening to all of some of the best music from the 50s onward
How is it possible? So ridiculously good!
Favorite Led Zep song!!
The first time I heard this song, my buddy and I went on a cruise and smoked some good weed. This song blew my mind, and it became my favorite instantly. Gives me goosebumps still.
One of fav’s!
Hell, they’re all my fav’s!
😆🤣
You get that heavy bottom end sound whenever the guitar & bass play unison lines. Makes the lows THICK! ……as a brick!🎸
..& Paige did use some crafty-sometimes innovated effects/equipment for that time. He gave the guitars lots of different tones/textures, etc. & yes, JPJ is that damn good! You were correct in saying “they were all masters of their crafts!”
"You never know where it's going" You said it, man!
Think about every song on this album? Not one sounds even close to sounding similar st all. And every song is unbelievable!!! My favorite Zep album!
I loved the look of bewilderment when you first realized Zepplin is the goats!!! Unsurpassed musicianship!! Enjoy
NO QUARTER!!! basically means NO MERCY 😅😊love it
I can't even count how many times I've been completely wasted, or tripping balls listening, or watching this during my college years. Sure i never graduated, but I woke up a whole different side of my mind.
Fell asleep to this every night in high school in the 80’s 🔥
I adore Zeppelin but this album hit me hard, still in my best top 5 of all time 🥰🔥
The comment about how watching you they now know what their face looked liked the first time hearing their music.
I love watching people hear Zeppelin for the first time.
The best song on a truly great album.
Y'all knocking it out the Park today 👌💪
There isn't a bad song on the whole album. It's a masterpiece. Produced by Mr. Page himself, along with Glyn Johns. Jimmy was a stickler as a producer and it really shows in every single track.
I love, love, love watching young people’s reaction to Led Zeppelin, the best band ever! 🙂
My favourite Zep song.
