I consider this to possibly the best studio recording of all time for any rock n roll album. I hear: great vocals, great drum play, great guitar work, great bass, great organ, strings galore, possibly a synthesizer, and who know what else? They didn't waste any of this recording tape for this recording session. I can't do any justice to a music structure on this song, but the time signatures in it are brilliant!
Puff Daddy, P-Diddy (or whatever he's calling himself this week) sampled it for his Godzilla song and Page even appears in the video. Henry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band, spoken word artist, actor etc) has the funniest line..."Went to see Led Zeppelin when I was younger and they opened with Kashmir....it was like someone punched me in the chest w/a Buick.....
The drums are in 4/4 time throughout, while the verses are principally in 6/8; so it seems straightforward, but decidedly not. This track is an epic masterpiece!
Yes, exactly, 2 different time signatures going on at the same time. Bonzo keeping a 4/4 rhythm throughout, while the rest of the instruments during each verse play in 6/8. The effect is otherworldly!
All Zep songs were written out, but Plant improvised the extra emphasis and magical gift of a voice he was given... Enjoy the Zep 'rabbit hole'!!!!!!
“Just thought it was normal” It was normal, back then, but extraordinary in every way. Nothing like it before or since. If I have any kind of privilege it’s having grown up listening to magic.
This is one of my top shelf rock standards. While each player here is exceptional, I'm glad you acknowledge JPJ. Even on his own he is a extraordinary instrumental force field.
Robert Plant has always used his voice like an instrument. While there's no harmonica playing in this - Plant is phenomenal on the harmonica as well. ❤
Amazing song. It's that 4 over 3 groove. And when you hear Bonham loosen up the hi-hat and toss in the snare and crash at the end, so good. I also notice all the places he could crash and he lays off. Glad you guys loved this one. Thanks. 😎👍
This main riff evolved spontaneously from a studio jam session, which was captured on tape. After Jimmy played it, they stopped playing, replayed the tape, and Jimmy realized they were onto something special. One of rock's most epic tracks.
Wonderful one guys, just great. You know why we love your reactions so much? Because you bring fresh ears to classics that we have loved for decades. I've heard Kashmir a thousand times, but I love how you listen to each instrument and appreciate how they wove them all together to make these amazing compositions. It's almost like listening to it for the first time again. I'm a huge Zep fan but I've honestly learned a lot about their music from watching you guys. Keep up the great work gentlemen, we appreciate you!
If you decide to watch this live, I would suggest Knebworth 1979. Robert’s vocals and Bonzo’s drums are unbelievable. I love how Robert’s voice just floats along above the music in this song.
My favorite Zeppelin song, wore this track out on the album. I highly recommend checking out the live version from the Celebration Day show from 2006/7, whenever it was. 26 years after they called it quits when Bonzo died and 31 years after this song was released. Yes John Paul killing the mellotron in this one. Jason Bonham on his father's drum kit. The riff has been sampled and this was in Godzilla, with Matthew Broderick.
Yeah definitely watch the Celebration Day performance of this track. I know a lot of people recommend Knebworth and it is great but I'm an old guy, been watching these guys for more than 50 years and there's just something about watching those old dudes do it live. It's epic! P.S. I heard my Giants played your Dodgers this weekend. How'd that go?😂
Zepplin's Kashmir "riff" is one of the most ICONIC riffs ever recorded. It has been sampled or copied 1000's of times since this was released. Most of the time you will have the music track (no lyrics) playing over a scene in a show or movie as well, especially when you are looking for a "build up moment" (montage) before the main action kicks off.
I watch that concert a lot and never get tired of it. And yes I believe that was the best version of Kashmir I've heard and watched them play too even though Bonzo wasn't there but his son Jason Bonham did an excellent job filling his dads gigantic shoes on his dads drum kit too. His dad would be so proud.
Getting the Led out on a Sunday morning, you guys know how to kick off my day. This one is so damn good - Bonzo's drum part sounds simple at first, but like always he builds something incredible. Love seeing how much you enjoyed this one - peace and love from Canada☮️
Thanks, guys, for all the amazingly righteous music and amazing analysis of the songs, instrumentation, and the soulful/unique voice of Robert Plant. The meaningful synchronicity of the keys, bass, drum, guitar, and those vocals are stunning. First Ballot Hall Of Fame music.
The difference with Led Zeppelin is they didn't just record albums...they created timeless artistic masterpieces ... this stuff just doesn't get old!! Revisit often my friends, the more you listen the more you appreciate... love the show guys keep it up!!
Absolutely lives up to the hype. You can listen to this song a million times and still find things that you missed. For me the space for all the elements to be heard is incredible. Fun fact for drumming and producing geeks, the drums for this song were recorded in the same stairwell in Headly Grange as When the Levee Breaks.
Plant is very much an improvisational type of singer. Every time he sings a song it's different from the last time. I've seen him multiple times over the last 50 years and every time rhe songs are performed differently. You have been going through the studio albums, and by the way, you need to continue to the end or you are going to miss some absolute classics of rock history. You also need to start doing some live versions, particularly at Knebworth, MSG and O2 Arena. Studo versions are one thing but you are entering another level when you take in some of these live performances.
When this came out almost all songs were about three minutes so they could be played on the radio. This is a masterpiece. A bit revolutionary. I was a young teenager when it came out. Never tire of it. Timeless.
"A real gangster record..." - can't say I've ever heard it described that way, but you're spot on!! Zeppelin went all-in, hard, trippy, groovin' with this album - so many styles, but they all compliment each other so well. A true masterpiece!! And as a long time listener, follower, lover of John Paul Jones - again, spot on - if you can't describe what it is, chances are, it's JPJ!! No truer words be spoken. The dynamic between JPJ & Bonham is immeasurable - definitely ranks in my top 5 rhythm sections of all time (along with Geddy Lee/Neil Peart, John Deacon/Roger Taylor...to name a couple) Great reaction to a stellar track!
❤️ how you guys breakdown both the instruments & musicians, like commentators calling a NFL game! 😊 One of my favorites lines in music "I'm a traveler of both time and space to be where I have been " & named a cat Kashmir in early 80's.✌️☮️❤️🎶
Plant's vocals and lyrics -- he has the lyrics written down, but ad libs all the time in the studio and goes all out live w the ad libbing and vocal scatting. ❤🎉
Bonhams "fills" are simply Legendary but also his tactical pauses have been analyzed and thought insanely talented as well! Bonham hits a pocket and stays until he feels a fill needs to be added. These slight personal touches of what and more of "how" he does these fills take carrying the beat to leading at times and Bonzo was able to do so only because of the incredible ability of JPJ and Page to adjust on the fly and fall in line. What you basically are experiencing is Rock on the highest musicianship level there possibly is. The layered engineering of this track is mind blowing. Watch this performance LIVE! It is a MUST listen/watch!! Enjoy~
Now you know why we couldn’t wait for you guys to react to this gem. Easily one of their greatest songs. Bonzo was steady as a rock, JPJ playing everything, Page was grooving out and Plant was at his finest, improvising throughout the entire track. This is a greasy track. Ooo Ooo yeah yeah baby let me take you there. Great reaction boys!!!
You really should watch the live Celebration Day Concert and performance of this masterpiece! It is truly amazing..they are much older and it is their last performance together. The drummer is Jason Bonham, the original drummer John Bonham's son and he gives a killer performance!! These guys definitely prove that age is just a number! It blows me away every time I watch it!
Obviously there are things to say about Kashmir, its real string orchestra in addition to JPJ,Bonham's Drums , Robert 's voice!!! The trip to other countries with sounds brought back by Jimmy Page...But,! You :guys are perfect, for your reaction and for having seen your pleasure in hearing this piece of art : AHuge Thanks, Huge!!!!!!
When this song first hit, it's all Anyone could talk about! It was so UN-usual for it's time. Much like "Four Sticks" I think it was based on their fascination with Morocco. JPJ's arrangement & orchestration on this is next level..I can't wait till you guys get to "IN THE LIGHT"...JPJ's masterpiece..
Now that you've hit this song you absolutely need to do the live version from celebration day with Jason Bonham ( Bonso's son) on drums. These dudes were in there late 60's and crushed this song, you get to see JPJ in all his glory making all these sounds live.
Guys you killed it! Your reaction at 4:16 in, was hilarious! You both caught the Bonham single bass triplet. (which every other reactioner always misses) Like Levee, JB drives this track with the phased drum rolls and cymbal work at the end. It’s no wonder Zeppelin endures. Great stuff. 🤘😎
Every other reactor misses that part. He was hilarious. Almost smashing his face into the microphone.Every other reactor misses that part. He was hilarious. Almost smashing his face into the microphone.
"Signifying Rapper" by Schoolly D samples "Kashmir" and the song was also heard in the film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" when Mark Ratner goes on his date with Stacy Hamilton.
@@dickcnormous4202 "And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV."
I heard an interview with John Anderson the lead singer of the band Yes. He said when he first heard Kashmir he was ready to give up music saying I could never write something that epic. It is a masterpiece, and whether you are, or not a fan of Led Zeppelin you can't deny just how much this song has crossed all forms of music it is a song for the ages.
Feeling it the way we all felt it first time. Just jaw dropping. Everything you said. JPP = Orchestra. Bonzo is the groove. Plant singing every note. What isn't up front, but very much part of the song is the 12 string guitar playing with strings on the 2nd section. Page killin' it in the backround. Love you guys for what you do. Thank you.
An absolute musical masterpiece!! Nobody can do like the mighty Zeppelin!!! Those 4 were put on this earth to be the most powerful band to ever grace the planet!!! ….They answered the call….Robert has arguably the best voice in rock…as far as freestyling…he wrote the lyrics so he knows what he’s talking about!!! Loving yourZeppelin journey guys….keep up the great music☮️
Unfortunately this song got played on the radio alot. Got burnt out from all the radio play. Sounds good 40 years later. Do not radio anymore. Thanks for awakening my appreciation for it again. You fellas are the best. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Happy Father's Day to you gentlemen! This is my absolute favorite Zeppelin song!! Yes, Bonham was off the chain, and so was Plant. The musicianship on this one single is so superior, there is no rival.
Hey guys! Ya got me! I finally subbed! So enjoying your reactions. Probably because of the songs you guys select - many of my most fav pieces of music from 65 yrs of living - over 40 of them in the music biz. I’m so happy you can recognize the quality of the songs and the radical superiority of the musicianship! Peace
The song is in 6/8 time and Bonzo is playing in 4/4 time! Jpj got to the studio late when Jimmy Page and the others were finishing up the song! The song is mainly backed up buy strings and horn sections from a orchestra! The only time Jimmy put back up musicians on their songs! Jpj added the mellotron late in the recording what you hear mostly is Jimmy's hypnotic riff in dadgag tuning and a full orchestra! That's what carries the song! The orchestra was a lot of Arab musicians from Morocco that's why this song has a Arabian feel to it! Jimmy is a wizard!
One of the many things that makes this channel great is how you guys offer a balanced assessment of the music based on both logic and emotion--you hear the music and analyze it, but you also feel the music, and offer your thoughts. I also love the total lack of pretentiousness--some reaction folks constantly chatter on and on, as if they simply want to hear themselves talk, whereas you guys speak pertinently and economically about the subject matter, without ruining the flow of the video. Regarding "Kashmir", it is one of Zeppelin's signature tunes, created when they were at their creative peak. I usually single out Bonham as the member who was most crucial to Zeppelin's sound, but JPJ is certainly the "Unsung Hero" of the band, with his bass and keyboard work. All his embellishments on "Kashmir" give the song a sort of Middle Eastern vibe--he takes us on an adventure. Really brilliant song-crafting. Another awesome reaction, gentlemen.
Hey Fellas. Another great Zeppelin song! They really covered a wide variety of musical styles. You never knew quite what you were going to get when you listened to a Led Zeppelin song. You should really check out the live version of this one from the Celebration Day concert at the 02 Arena in London, which I believe was 2006? It had Robert, Jimmy, and JPJ joined by Jason Bonham (John's son) on drums. It really was done beautifully in this performance, it's truly worth a listen. Enjoyed your reaction, as always. Peace.
Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers out there. Keep up the good work my brothers!!!

This main riff evolved spontaneously from a studio jam session, which was captured on tape. After Jimmy played it, they stopped playing, replayed the tape, and Jimmy realized they were onto something special. One of rock's most epic tracks.
Check out the performance from 2007 of Kashmir from Celebration Day. They are older and still killing it.
Stunning piece of music...what else can you say...its just stunningly good
Wonderful one guys, just great.
Also 1979 at knebworth!!
How'd that go?😂
I believe that it is a Yamaha CS-50. There is a great video of LZ playing KASH probably from the mid to late 1970's with JPJ playing one.
What a present to us fathers out there. You nailed it again with this reaction to another classic by Led Zeppelin.
i've listen to this for 40+ years and it still stops me in my tracks. Welcome to the family.
Masterpiece Arrangements don't get much more hypnotically superb than this. Bonz is the epitome of serving the song here. They are all on point here.
Hypnotically superb :)
2007 Celebration Day. They are in their late 50's. Jason Bonham is on drums. An incredible performance.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 no it's cool. My old ass couldn't remember.
Beautiful drumming.
Zeppelin was tapped into something OUT OF THIS REALM.. Talk about piercing the depths of the soul!
I'm 65 and remember when this album came out. I still get chills listening to this song. ❤
This song is mesmerizing, definitely one of my favorites. Check out the LIVE version though with Bonham's son on drums.
All the Bells and Whistles Total Pkg! Led Zep takes it To Infinity and Beyond GOAT Rock Band Ever! Y'all got it right guys! Great Job!
Happy Father's day guys. Some consider this LZ's best. Solid reaction, great insight 👍👍
You said it. After 40-some years I just now consciously realized the chorus has no lyrics. 🤯
You guys need to listen to this song live from celebration day plant & page both are phenomenal
Sometimes I imagine that this song is floating through the universe forever ✨️
Hearing this live is amazing !
This is just a pure and simple masterpiece that is totally timeless
Your Led Zeppelin reactions have to be the most satisfying musical journey I've seen on youtube - fantastic - and there's still more to come!!
Agree completely. These gents are a satisfying Zep discovery to witness.
brother we understand Bonz doing doubles and triples always a treat!!!
Yup, the live version from Celebration Day is definitely worth checking out. Insanely good 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
When this came out almost all songs were about three minutes so they could be played on the radio.
The dynamic between JPJ & Bonham is immeasurable - definitely ranks in my top 5 rhythm sections of all time (along with Geddy Lee/Neil Peart, John Deacon/Roger Taylor...to name a couple)
Great reaction to a stellar track!
Yes happy father's day!!👍👍
Should have a listen two "Kashmir " Celebration Day Live
Now do the Celebration Day version
Will blow your mind
Side 2 and 3 of this record is fantastic their best stuff imo.
The goats do it again. No surprise there. Great reaction fellas!
JPJ's arrangement & orchestration on this is next level..I can't wait till you guys get to
"IN THE LIGHT"...JPJ's masterpiece..
Now that you've hit this song you absolutely need to do the live version from celebration day with Jason Bonham ( Bonso's son) on drums. These dudes were in there late 60's and crushed this song, you get to see JPJ in all his glory making all these sounds live.
I've had this album for years on CD and LP, and until I saw this video, I've never noticed that there seems to be a giant heart on the album cover.
Caught it.
Rat, you gotta have the attitude.
@@dickcnormous4202 "And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV."
I already know I’m going to like this review. Let’s get into it.
I heard an interview with John Anderson the lead singer of the band Yes. He said when he first heard Kashmir he was ready to give up music saying I could never write something that epic.
It is a masterpiece, and whether you are, or not a fan of Led Zeppelin you can't deny just how much this song has crossed all forms of music it is a song for the ages.
did it great live on their Celebration Day video. Jason plays drums for his deceased dad. just brilliant!
Thank you.
You’re on the back of a tailgate hanging out with friends- no alcohol, no drugs, you’re just hanging out LOUD ❤
This is a masterwork..a testament to thier combined skillsets.
Three geniuses, and one follower. Led Zeppelin
??????
Unfortunately this song got played on the radio alot. Got burnt out from all the radio play. Sounds good 40 years later. Do not radio anymore. Thanks for awakening my appreciation for it again. You fellas are the best. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Haha, nice! Been radio free for ten years and counting...
Physical Graffiti is my all time favorite album and Kashmir is the cherry on top. Thank you peace
Happy Father's Day to you gentlemen! This is my absolute favorite Zeppelin song!! Yes, Bonham was off the chain, and so was Plant. The musicianship on this one single is so superior, there is no rival.
I hope you guys enjoy this one for 40 more years like I've enjoyed it these many years. Ain't they great?
Thanks for the video!
Hey guys! Ya got me! I finally subbed! So enjoying your reactions. Probably because of the songs you guys select - many of my most fav pieces of music from 65 yrs of living - over 40 of them in the music biz.
I’m so happy you can recognize the quality of the songs and the radical superiority of the musicianship!
Peace
It’s my favorite song by Led Zeppelin. Great reaction!
JPJ IS AN ORCHESTRA!!! Amen dudes.
One of my favorite Zep songs. Such a vibe!
Peace.
Check out the Knebworth 1979 concert performance. The camera work lets you see Bonham in full flight. Magnificent.
