To me this is not only Led Zeppelin’s greatest song but one of the greatest recordings ever made period.
100% agreed. Very few bands have anything that comes close, especially in the rock genre.
Showcases what true musicians and writers they were
@@jamiedimond9419 great rebuttal...filled with facts.😅
Hard to argue with that

10 Years Gone enters the chat
Songs like this one is what throws Zeppelin into a different category,a different level of greatness
The most beautiful arrangement in the history of Led Zeppelin…in my opinion.
Probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time. It can’t be overstated
Ten Years Gone
and ten years gone
@@davidgreene7676 YES!
Jimmy was inspired to write this song after hearing that George Harrison (from The Beatles) said that the problem with Led Zeppelin was they didn't have any ballads. He even quotes the opening chords of Harrison's song "Something" in the opening here. It had a working title of "slush" due to its soft rock leanings. This song had its beginnings in Jimmy's new home studio and I love how he kept the acoustic fret squeaks intact for added intimacy. Jonesy used a Mellotron Mark II and Steinway piano while Bonzo did indeed use brushes and sticks. This song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time. It is a perfect example of Led Zeppelin's ability to create songs of "light and shade". Absolutely moving and gorgeous.
WOW no kidding, that's interesting! Jimmy needed to impress George haha, well he did it!
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Hey there and hello! :)
Urban legend.
@@paulmahon1613 What is?
Wow, now I do hear "Something" in the chord progression. I can't believe it took me this long to notice this!
JPJ is the orchestra. He is playing all that on a Mellotron. I've always interpreted this song as the seasons of life. He is young in the springtime. As he gets older, he is in his summer. When he gets old, he felt the coldness of his winter. When you die, a little rain falls. "Upon us all, a little rain must fall."
i've always been fascinated by retro-tech. (dad was a computer service guy in the 60's and 70's, when computers were big and primitive). the way inventors accomplished things before modern technology was so ingenious. the mellotron used tape loops of recorded musical instruments, so that when you pushed a key, a corresponding tape would engage and play that note. it was like having an orchestra at your fingertips. people of earlier generations were just as crafty as we are. they just had simpler tools to work with, and they made the most of it.
Sounds like there’s an actual cello in there. If that’s the case it was probably played by JPJ.
Nicely put.
It's the mystery of the quotient, baby. Just a little rain!
@joelhoulette3244 so did Mike Pinder of the Moody's imho
JPJ played bass, grand piano, mellotron and I think a synthesizer on this song. As always, the secret weapon of LZ.
JPJ🦋
Spot on ❤
The Swiss Army Knife of LZ
This is one of my favorite songs of all time and didn't know that. That's amazing.
Someday you may consider saying Led Zeppelin is the greatest Rock Band of all time
There's probably a dozen LZ songs that, when I hear them, I think, "this might be my favorite LZ song." This is one of them.
It’s like trying to pick your favorite child.
Led Zeppelin NEVER made a bad song. Rain Song is arguably their finest moment.
Zep's unsung hero. John Paul Jones...Bass, all the keys and what shouldn't be lost, he is the master arranger of so many Zeppelin songs.
"They're not playing fair now" - Best quote ever about Zep.
La & Che,
I want to thank you Gentlemen SO much for taking the “deep dives” into the music I grew up with, because even though I owned all of the albums of almost all of the 60’s-70’s era artists that y’all have reacted to thus far, hearing them all again (with a good set of earphones!) while watching your reactions & hearing your thoughts has really helped me appreciate & understand these songs so much more!!!
You guys are great, & one of the things that I really like about y’all is that you don’t f#*k around with a whole lotta 🐂💩, y’all get right into the music, interrupt very infrequently, & then bounce out.. like I said in your last Hendrix reaction, you guys deserve to have a helluva lot more than 17K subscribers, for damn sure ‼️
Thank you so much. We always love to hear from you. Feels like we should have more subs but we will keep on rocking out regardless.
ua-cam.com/video/1Pe1_gr_FTQ/v-deo.html
Just in case y’all want to see LZ do it live.. probably lacks the background orchestral component, but still very beautifully done!
@@AirplayBeatsthey will come
@@AirplayBeats they will come. you guys have the best reactions on youtube IMO ...and the cream always rises to the top. love your work!
I just posted the same thing: thanks to these reactions I am experience new dimensions in the music I've loved all my life.
Do not change a thing La and Che, you are doing it right. You are my favorite reaction channel.
I’ve come to realize this song can’t get old regardless of age 🌦️
JPJ playing the piano and doing all the arrangements. Dude was incredibly talented and ridiculously underrated
John Paul Jones is underrated by precisely NO-ONE who knows even the slightest thing about music. Just read the other comments in this thread you fool. Geezus I have come to hate that word.
You have one word wrong. Your 'was' should be 'is'.
Last band he played with was Them Crooked Vultures. (That I am aware of) He's still going, and still badass.
@@McKavian fair enough
The greatest band who ever lived.
Rain Song is number one for me, followed by 10 years gone. Been listening to it consistently since it came out. Beautiful
Same here!
Omg Ten Years Gone is the best solo guitar ever
As much as I enjoy all your reactions to Zeppelin, I sincerely hope that someone out there gets this video in front of Jimmy, Robert and John Paul so they can realize how impactful their music still can be to those who have never heard it before.
This has always been my favorite Led Zeppelin song. I'm 65 years old and used to play this song a lot in my car. It is such a beautiful sad and moving song. Brings back plenty of memories.
Hi F, yes, this beautiful song creates solace... masterpiece can be overused...not here, after all, it is Led Zeppelin.
Masterpiece, written by Page. When people try to group other heavy bands in the same group with Led Zeppelin, songs like this elevate them miles above the rest. There are lots of great bands, but few (maybe one or two other) that can play in as many sandboxes and genres as LZ, as well as they could. Brilliance.
Jimmy’s guitar work is impeccable.
This one not only one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs it’s one of my favorite songs period. It’s a classic
Ten Years Gone is another amazing jam!!! My second favorite next to this.
"Speak to me only with your eyes."
Best frickin band ever. It's hard to pick a favorite, but this one kicks my ass every time. 👍❤🤙
It really wasn’t fair at this time. The Beatles were gone and these guys rally had no competition. They were so far above every other band. Each member brought GREATNESS. They dominated for 10 strong years!
pink floyd i think, 70s were their decade
great also but not ZEPPELIN, the goats.@@icydelon
This band has been the soundtrack to my life, been hooked since I was 12 years old.
I was hooked at 14 when I heard their first album back in ‘69.
Same here!!!
Led Zeppelin's example of how to write a ballad . Led Zeppelin's secret weapon JPJ shines on this trac ✌💞
The band played all the instruments on this song with John Paul Jones playing a mellotron and Steinway piano to create an orchestral sound, you should see the live version of this song from the 1973 MSG live concert movie called The Song Remains the Same...my favorite LZ song ever
The version that Plant and Page did together with a full orchestra was pretty sweet too.
@@williamh4172 absolutely wonderful!
@@bnd4ever48 is that you with Jimmy?
@@williamh4172 yes
@@bnd4ever48 very cool
People say that Stairway to Heaven is their magnum opus, but The Rain song is by far a better song. That's my opinion. Great reaction guys it obviously got to you in a good way 👍. Keep it up.
Not only can you hear Led Zeppelin, you can feel them. Greatest rock band ever. Not even a close second.
Zeppelins secret weapon John Paul Jones is all over this. He was (is) a gifted arranger. All the stuff on here that isn't guitar or drums is JPJ sprinkling his magic on an already great song.
Having not done a ballad, to the best ballad ever. I really love your reactions. So knowledgeable, and so appreciative.
Thank You? Tangerine? Babe I'm Gonna Leave You? Going To California?
@@tektoniks_architects I’ll take The Rain Song over all those. And I think a ballad in the sense of slow, thoughtful. I don’t see the others the same way.
Take whatever you want. But to say Thank You or Tangerine are not ballads is patently false.
Tears fall every time I hear this musical masterpiece!🎶 JPJ is the orchestra being played on the mellotron🎶 Cant wait for y'all to watch this live from Madison Square Garden 1973 when the entire concert was filmed for a movie "The Song Remains The Same" about the band🎶 Each band member chose a song to do a "fantasy" scene for and Robert chose this one...riding a-horse on the beach to rescue a-damsel in distress💜 Can never get that image out of my head when I hear The Rain Song💜🎶💜 I cant thank y'all enough for your most heartfelt reactions...and yes, this one does hit different down in your soul!!💜
They may prefer studio, but the live film they really really should see for themselves!...
This is their best album, no question.
To so many of us who grew up with this music, it was such a celebration of life.
This is the thing about Zeppelin...you mentioned their discography...there are other great bands, but the sheer volume of truly great songs that Zeppelin came out with was, in my opinion, unmatched. As you said, this is the fifth album you guys have checked out. There are several more and each has multiple songs that are undeniably 'great'. The discussion of what their "best" song is inevitably becomes an almost comical exercise because there are simply so many truly amazing songs...and this one right here absolutely belongs in that discussion.
One of the most beautiful chord progressions ever. And it’s not even in standard tuning.
Have always thought this one of the most beautiful rock ballads I've ever heard
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I had a boyfriend in high school in 1979, that used to play this for me on his electric guitar. Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to that time...
Led Zep never could be pigeon-holed. Brilliant artists.
Guys, I gotta say, that was a kick watching you react just the way EVERYONE does the first time they hear this. I see more of this in your Zeppelin listening future. Good stuff. 🤘😎
No doubt! La & Che break it down so great, and it’s so cool because it’s like listening to it for the first time all over again. Boys, it’s a great gift to us viewers “of a certain age” so thank you.
The studio version is great but the '73 MSG version is absolutely sublime. Page's guitar was tuned in such a unique yet beautiful key
Agree, it made me want to cry it is so beautiful ❤
THIS is the quintessential example of why I always say they were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band. From Whole Lotta Love, To Going to California, to That’s The Way, to Black Dog, to this…and on and on….
It’s absolutely insane the depth and quality of their portfolio. They don’t miss!!
The “orchestration” is JPJ experimenting with the mellotron, and there are other examples on this album. Probably my single most favorite LZ song is No Quarter, also on this album, and mellotron-heavy.
One of their most thought provoking songs.
Page designed this album to be played in order. That is...Song Remains the Same, followed by The Rain Song and so on. Light to shade as Page described it.
Immaculate is the perfect word...
Y'all be drinking' da Led Zep Kool Aid😉
Thank you for playing this...we played at a friends funeral in high school...it was Immaculate.
I enjoy listening to your reactions very much...I'm a newbie to your channel...I like your quiet, thoughtful, opinions. You are true audiophiles, and I'm glad I found your channel in the myriad of reaction channels out there!
Peace, out!
1970’s on the beach, bonfire and an illegal smile, listening to this, great time to be alive
Led Zep owned the 70’s RnR world.
A masterpiece from Rocks Greatest Band.
In my humble opinion, the live version of " The Rain Song" is much more captivating !!!
Led is the best ride of music you will ever have.
You're starting their 5th album and have heard a lot of great songs, and there are so many more iconic songs of theirs to come.
'Upon us all, upon us all a little rain must fall.' This song is so beautiful in its lyricism and perfect restraint.
The "orchestra" sound is JPJ on a Mellotron; JPJ also on all keyboards and bass. "Upon us all a little rain must fall." Beautiful.
I guess I've taken for granted that this album and song have accompanied my life for the last 50 years. I can see you've enjoyed this as much as I have. Here's to many years listening to the greatest I've ever heard. Watch this live with the London Philharmonic and be amazed!!🎵🎼🎶
I KNOW RIGHT!!!!???? I get such a rush from watching these young guys discover Zeppelin. It’s like discovering for myself all over again, the music I’ve been listening to since I was in junior high.
@@kikivon3501 I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard this song. And it is so fun to see the faces of these two while experiencing LZ. I'm sure our faces looked the same. Absolute joy!!
Just a wonderful, melodic song that showcases the softer side of Led Zep.
That was an utterly beautiful experience watching you both hearing this for the first time.
Watching you guys reaction is better than listening to the song alone.
You guys are starting to understand why All through high school, some of us did not listen to much music other than the mighty Led Zeppelin..
This song means different things at different stages and events in your life. It ages like fine wine.
It’s about time !!!
This album expanded the colors , styles , shapes and moods this band creates. I believe this LZ album ages the best.
And now you know why we love Jimmy Page. I love his artistry. He never fails to deliver a surprise or two.
So true… a little rain must fall in all our lives.. this song is just so beautiful… how could you not love Led Zeppelin?
Growing up listening to all of the great music from the 60's and 70's I never thought much about how great it was. I guess I just took it for granted because there was so much of it out there on the radio, stereo, etc. I never realized how great it was at the time until i compare it to how music has changed so much (for the worse) these days. I don't know what happened but nothing today comes close.
Love this group since I was a teenager. Bout to turn fifty in a couple months. This album is unbelievable
JPJ played a Mellotron for the violin effects and is credited with the piano part as well. The style of the piano does remind me of Nicky Hopkins who has played on dozens of songs you may have heard.🖖🏼
Led Zeppelin - the music black people didn't know they needed.
You guy’s running through Zep reminds me why I will always consider them the greatest rock band ever.
This one is felt even more than it’s heard. You hear this with your whole being.
Headphones are an absolute must.
Watch this (combined with The Song Remains the Same) performed live at MSG '73, and you'll love it even more!
Back in 87 my close friend said he wanted to have this song played at his funeral not knowing that he would be killed in a freak accident a few months later. I love this song and all of the special memories from it.
JPJ is playing everything else except guitar, bass and drums. The man is the MVP of "The Rain Song". He's KILLING the Mellotron (the orchestra sound you hear).
It's so cool that you two clearly see that this is one of the greatest bands of ALL TIME!!!
Love you guys. Sincere appreciation for classic songs us old geezers take for granted.
Most beautiful song...and live in 1973 at MSG is unbelievable! JPJ on the keys!
Not only is this song so good, the Outro (end) of this song is so moving.
When you’re finished with this album, you’ll have to watch them do this live at MSG!!
With A Soft Strumming Delicacy , And A SOFT , But Passionate. & Intimate WHISPER...😎🎤 🎹 😊 😄 😉
Jimmy and john paul jones are beyond masterclass musicians and composers
They really never wrote a bad song. Genius level mastery….❤️🎶❤️your journey with them is wonderful to watch.❤️
Moments like this one during your reaction( ya both got stuck) such a joy to see this happening decades after I heard this album the first time.
Thank you ❤️
The live version is awesome too. It has more of a epic vibe. This one is really smooth.
Love both ❤
Hard to describe the amount of talent that was just heard. So softly powerful and definitely one of my favorite songs in any category
This is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs.
Makes an old man cry 😂..with joy 😊
When I recommended this song to you guys I knew it would be so beautiful that it would bring tears to your eyes and make you guys emotional.....please remember.....my generation and I saw these groups and Rock band created right before our eyes out of our generation and the music ad every each of sound in these artists of the 60's and 70's represent us...and your reactions are very very similiar to our reactions when we first heard this music and songs.....I have vinyl "Houses of the Holy." from 1973 that I play from time to time....this song is the most beautiful song created by Led Zeppelin. So, when I recommend a song for you to react to....it is according to your emotional and mental abilities to comprehend it and get emotional about it. Your reactions mirror the reactions of millions in the 60's and 70's of my generation! Thank you for keeping this music ALIVE!!!!❤❤❤🔥❤ And that instrument that sounds like an Orchestra is called "Mellotron." You can look it up on Google. Invented in the 60's I think....1964....it is also used by Yes....Rush....The Beatles....The Moody Blues....Led Zeppelin. Excellent instrument.
Oh, yes! I got this when it was released and wept all over the whole album. My 16 year old county girl mind was blown.
Always one of my favorites. I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever made honestly
This is my lady's favorite Zeppelin song
"Who's playing the piano?" JPJ...Unrecognized composer of the band. Amazing guy really.
Cheers!

This is a mystery of the quotient. Upon us all upon us all a little rain must fall. What incredible lyrics !
Best rock group of all time! I first heard this song and album when I was about 12 years old (1977), and it has never gotten old hearing it over and over again throughout the years!
That melotron is a killer....love this song
This is a shining example of JPJ’s essential contributions to the music of Zeppelin with the mellotron and piano as well as the bass. This was also the only song of the catalog where Bonham used brushes which is somewhat surprising because he sounds like such a master of that technique.
Oh man, you guys would dig the concert film The Song Remains The Same. The live versions of Rain Song and the title track are so so so good. Jimmy Page plays this a step higher (or half-step, i forget) and the shit is magical. Plus, it's just a classic "rock film." You also get a real sense of just how bluesy/R&B they were.
Man…long time since I’ve heard this song get the respect it deserves. You guys are a true class act that ‘get’ the importance of musical pieces like this. Really lifts my spirits--thank you.
This is the best Zep composition in my opinion followed by Ten Years Gone, but they owned it in the 70'S with my friends and I and most everyone else.
If any song is worthy of cuss words, its this one.
Thank you for doing Zeppelin the proper way, song by song from beginning to end. You're fast becoming my favorite reactors.
Always gives me goosebumps and a lump in my throat. So beautiful.😢
every time i hear the bridge starting at 7:14 and with Robert's vocals, it gives me chills down my neck and spine, every time!
"upon us all...upon us all...a little rain must fall".
Isn't this just gorgeous? I was about 14 when this came out....I cried then at every listen and still do at age 63. My Mom was a classical pianist and would just melt when I'd play it abd her tears would also flow . I'm so gad it hit you both in the same way
