I started high school in 1969. Led Zeppelin stood out from all the other bands at that time. I was into the Motown sound before Zeppelin came out. The Spinners, O'Jays, Commodores, Etta James to a name a few, and when Led Zeppelin's first album came out I really didn't know what to think. It was such a radical departure from everything else being put out at that time. A time when The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and The Who were rocking out as well. But Zeppelin was different from all of them. 4 musical genius' came together and were able to blend their genius into mind-blowing songs. Songs that sounded very different from the other songs on the album and different from songs on any of their albums. My musical tastes range from Percy Sledge to Fiona Apple to Everlast. I consider Zeppelin a once in a lifetime group that I was fortunate enough to enjoy in the prime of my youth.

One of the greatest songs ever, by anyone, never mind it is the mighty Led Zeppelin. They just have so many colors in their audio palette, so many different kinds of rock songs but always different and great in their own way tunes. This is utterly classic in studio, one of the best headphones songs you can test a pair with. Live, it takes on a life of its own and runs 10 to 20 minutes and Jimmy and JPJ get plenty of room to solo. Great tune guys, the journey continues. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

This song would become Jonesy's showpiece when performed live and could last 20 minutes or more. He would improv through a keys solo and add things like bits of classical, jazz, blues...whatever he felt. This definitely has a bit of prog-rock feel as they always tried to explore the obscure paths of music. They got the underwater-like piano sound by processing Jonesy's Hohner ElectraPiano through a synth. There are so many musical textures and techniques here including synth washes, synth soloing, Moog Taurus pedals and an uncharacteristically jazzy guitar solo from Jimmy. According to engineer Andy Johns, they got the buzzy guitar sound by using a couple of compressors and direct injection into the mixer; it was a technique similar to the one they used for Black Dog. The overall thick sound happened in part by Jimmy using vari-speed to slow it down. The lyrics touch on Robert's continued fondness for legends, lore, and battles fought both real and fantasy as he describes soldiers "wearing steel that's bright and true" travelling possibly through a mountain range (the "winds of Thor" could be Mount Thor, a Canadian mountain range) during a blizzard. They will show "no quarter" as they "carry news that must get through". This is a dark, moody masterpiece.

I remember as a kid about 8 yrs old in late 70s an early 80s that I use to think that Led zeppelin, Black sabbath, pink Floyd, AC/DC were all from my town, because everybody back then had these band freaking screaming out their car stereo with windows down... That's all you heard, now it seems I'm the only one who's volume is all the way up in my truck while riding

This was JPJ's masterpiece. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but you spoke again of how well they all play together, so I'll mention it again. The live version (at MSG, about 10 mins) of Dazed and Confused is incredible. It's Dazed and Confused alright, but they go off on a tangent or two and it's just seamless. Jammin'.

For me, Bonham's swinging drum groove is still the most incredible thing about this song.
He hardly ever does 16th notes on the hi-hats, so this remains one of the best studies of his dynamics and I love it. It's close to mystic.

The comment about how watching you they now know what their face looked liked the first time hearing their music. Same. Your doing this allows us to recapture some of that first-time listening back in the '70's. I was 7, almost 8. First listen was at my older cousin's house. The next day I started hitting up the neighbors to mow lawns/wash cars or if they had any "Coke" bottles to return for cash to raise the $6 or $8 to buy my own copy. I'm SO enjoying your chronological journey through their catalog.

This was a beautiful keyboard part brought in by John Paul Jones (who didn't sign the pact with the Devil) and Jimmy and Robert made it evil and eerie sounding - and Robert wrote somewhat mysterious lyrics, but those lyrics are about Bonzo, Robert and Jimmy signing a pact with the Devil. The lyrics are somewhat disguised.
No Quarter = no mercy - when you sign a pact with the Devil - you can't ask for mercy or expect mercy. You get whatever misfortune or triumph which comes along, bc you signed your soul away.
The tour following the release if this album was mammoth and record setting in rock history. They broke The Beatles single act attendance record at Tampa Stadium on the 2nd date of the tour - May 5th, 1973. Houses was released on March 28th, 1973.
Look the lyrics up - "...the Devil mocks their every step..."
"...they choose the path where no one goes..."

I remember it was late, like 3 in the morning, the lights were down with the stereo up, and the whole place was trippin. It had been a fairly large party, an every one who came was cool, but that was just how '75 was. Somewhere in the first 40 seconds of "No Quarter", the clouds that filled the room changed the place, the space, the time. We were in that strange smoky tumult with its muffled moans and final cries of the wounded and dying. It was the loud deep silence that follows a raging and deafing hand to hand fight to the death of tens of thousands of men, with those who won being so diminished in number, that executing the wounded enemy would require much time.

No Quarter was a term in Medieval warfare that meant the ability to surrender....No quarter meant no surrender and no prisoners taken....The bass player John Paul Jones also played keyboards as well as mandolin.

    • @heliotropezzz333

Essentially yes. No quarter means 'no mercy' in other words no prisoners taken. To give no quarter is to give no mercy. To ask no quarter is to ask for no mercy - a fight to the death. It comes from the idea that if you accept prisoners you have to 'quarter' them (find accommodation for them).

Great for 65 yr old who grew up with this music since 12, to see u guys appreciate "our" music. I think the common denominator is R&B. The Stones, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath....all considered themselves a "blues band". And who doesn't love R&B?

This song live could go for 30-35 minutes some nights, and listening to the interplay between JPJ, Page and Bonham is so incredible!
You have to check out some good quality live performances too! Because it wasn’t rehearsed, it was all groove and feel between the band that led the song all over the place and then back to it’s roots!
Simply an Amazing Band, individually and collectively, light and shade.

This is probably my favorite Zep tune, it speaks to my soul- it’s incredible! If you want to hear no quarter live audio, there is a double album called “ the song remains the same” . I sure hope you are going to react to all the live songs from this 1976 release. And there’s also a album called “ coda” put together with left over bits and pieces & left over songs after the band broke up( after in through the out door. Please react to those mentioned also, they are legit records and I know your fans ( which I am one of your most dedicated) , would love to see your reactions. They will blow you away.
You two guys are incredible- thanks a lot and many blessings to you guys 🇺🇸

Another great reaction guys. Such a classic and unique song. Fully agree with everyone suggesting the 1973 live No Quarter performance from MSG -- it is a must watch. Jimmy's solo in that one is beyond belief. And, lucky you, you still have three more Zep albums to go (actually four counting Coda which is great too); next one up is Physical Graffiti, my personal favorite. But you can't go wrong with the mighty Zep. Love your work gentlemen, keep it up!
