I have to work out alone. No buddies, no trainers, just me. Because I have a tendency to let everyone and everything at the gym get into my head and cause me to lose motivation to keep going.
Also, I have problems sleeping, and studies have shown a regular exercise routine can improve your sleep, so my mantra is to make sure I get a good night's sleep. A little extra time on the elliptical, a little extra time on the treadmill, so when I hit the bed, I'm OUT! This is also why I work out in the evenings. After work, I go to the gym, I come home, I shower and I can just tune all the way down at night.
Great video, Melissa. I needed this today to remind myself. :)

I am so glad I was able to remind you! Don't let anything get to in your head. Just focus on YOU being there, NO ONE ELSE! It's great that the working out has helped you sleep. I am happy to hear this!

On most weekdays I go to the gym in the morning before work and the evening right after work (kind of helps that we have an on site gym). I've been doing it for so long now that it's basically just automatic. My main reasons were the usual I want to lose weight and look good. But now it's also about seeing how far I can go with my cardio and strength. And I really like that I avoid rush hour traffic with my schedule.
Sticking to my flexible dieting/IIFYM plan on the other hand... that's always been a struggle.

    • @melissamaker
      @melissamaker  7 років тому +2

WOAH twice a day? That's hard core! It is a great way to avoid rush hour, I agree with you. But I feel like you're doing so well at the gym that you must have a somewhat easier time with diet! But serious kudos to you!

Thank you so much for this video! Exactly what I needed. I have 60kg to lose and I have so far lost 10kg. I have been so good about going to the gym, had one week off and now struggling to go back. This video has really given me the urge to go back and keep at it!

    Hi Melissa,
What keeps me going is the feeling that my muscles are working and heating, but especially the good feeling after working out that my body is more active and awake.
I go to the gym during lunch break, 2 times a week, can't do more because either stuff come out at work or .... excuses.
I think going first thing in the morning is a great idea, I will seriously consider this and work on commiting to it. I read somewhere that turning a new routine to a habit is done when repeating it 66 times. I haven't tried but I think I can try it with going to he gym early in the morning.
Thank you for this video, this really speaks to me.

    • @melissamaker
      @melissamaker  7 років тому

That's amazing that you have managed to carve it into your lunch schedule. Give it a whirl in the AM and see how it goes - you never know! I am so pleased to hear that!

I cut my grass with a push mower. It broke about a year ago and had such a hard time getting my husband to fix it. Finally fixed and getting back to cutting. I love cutting grass. We have a large field on the side of our house. I'm almost back to cutting the whole thing. You're such a motivational person. Thanks so much for your videos. I look forward to what's next. Can you do some food videos. I think you mostly eat unprocessed things and I've had to change my diet because I'm allergic to corn. Thanks.

I agree 100% with all this. I have tried to fit my workout around my busy schedule for just under 1 year, I have finely cracked it...after 9.30 pm, when the kids are in bed (4 times a week). Not only does it solve the timing problem, but it also mean early, light dinner, and no midnight snacking nor wine drinking out of boredom...(I am lucky to be able to have my treadmill in the garage). As for the numbers...I have ditched the scales years ago....the clothes are my measuring tape, and if desperate I have found that taking a pic of myself on the same day every month does help.

I'm half way through losing a large amount of weight (60/120lbs), and I've found the magic equation is that Calories In < Calories Burned = Weight Loss (with the assumption that the Calories In are healthy). I've tried a bunch of different times to exercise, and the best for me right after I get home from work. So I'm not starving when I get home, I have a lighter lunch at lunchtime and have a snack about an hour before I leave for home, then have dinner after I workout. When home, I use either our recumbent bike or treadmill, and I watch UA-cam videos to keep my mind off the time, and have been working my way through the Clean My Space videos.

Thank you for talking about your anxiety around the numbers! That's a big part of my struggle is to see how much I've gained since I last went or how little I can lift compared to when I used to go regularly. I'm definitely going to try out some of these tips this week! Great video!

    • @melissamaker

YES it's so nasty. I have had a much easier time letting the numbers go and just focusing on the fact that I am SHOWING UP! You can do this! xo

    I stay motivated by:
1/ going first thing in the morning cause like you I found so many excuses if I think about it
2/ I joined a floor barre class after 20 years of fear to go back to ballet and I'm having a blast with doing something technical that requires concentration so that it distract me from the pain!
3/ now i mesure technical improvement and not body improvement, just as you.
4/ I keep track of my moves with a Fitbit and it definitely motivate me to take the stairs rather than the elevator.

I go to the gym mostly for health reasons. But one thing that motivates me aside from this is that afterwards I don't have to clean the shower and hair drying area. Plus I can use two showers side by side for contrast showers which are good for the immune system. And I go to the gym's sauna as a reward.

My gym is in my house & I found that the easiest motivator for me was to put the Roku & TV in there. I can not sit & watch a movie without doing something else at the same time so this was a winner for me.

I set micro goals for myself. Build up to your big goals slowly. You can't eat an elephant in one bite.
    Use positive self talk.
    Envision the results you want.
It's not worth it to worry about things. Remember what is done is done, and future obstacles have not happened yet. Deal with what your working on now.
I limit my work out to what is effective for me. I toss in an occasional fun class. But forcing myself to do regimented classes is not realistic and will stop me from working out.
Be strong. Thanks for all the cleaning tips. Keep up working out.

Excellent video, I am doing exactly some of the things you said. I started going to the gym the first week in july, I have been consistent, I go right after work, gym bag packed night before, 4x week, no gym buddies, And it is going well. Right now I have a trainer 2x week and that also helps. Some friends started with me, and they have stopped already. So you have to become your own motivator at some point.

I bought a Fitbit to get me moving and it has! Since purchasing it, I have been going to the gym every other day before going to work. I get all of my gym gear ready the night before and in my work bag so there are no excuses. 30 minutes at the gym is all I needed to get started and it feels good. In fact, I don't get daily food coma at 3 PM anymore because I am exercising. Whenever I can, I would walk outside during lunch for about 15 to 20 minutes. That helps too. I kept looking my weight which hasn't changed since i started exercising. But Melissa is absolutely. Don't focus on the #s. It will keep me down if I focus on it. Thanks Melissa for this wonderful and informative video.

In the summer, I love going running in the afternoon! When college is in session, morning works better, but I can't get up in time to do a full 30 minute run, so I don't even bother going out. I've created a shorter 10 minute run for next semester so I don't have that excuse anymore, and I've used it a couple mornings! It's not ideal, but at least I'm getting some exercise in, and hopefully I can work my way up to getting in a good 30 minute run!

When I first started working out I was going 5 days a week. After a year I was struggling with fatigue. I now take Wed. off and that mid week break allows me to mentally prepare to go back. (We also use Myzone to track our workout stats. :)

I was going to a crossfit gym, and the workouts are very strenuous. I've been going through a huge lifestyle change by moving my sister in with me who has high functioning dementia. I fail big time in the "be realistic" area 😒 will try to do that from now. 940000 excuses .. so funny !!! I am also an expert at that.
Apart from these fails, my main motivation to go to the gym is so that I can eat my favorite foods.
Question for you : what gym shoes do you wear?

I like the first-thing look. Down with cosmetics, I say. Anyway, as Melissa suggests, make eating well and regular exercise your goals as opposed to reaching a certain weight or clothing size. On that note, allow me to recommend the book HEALTH AT EVERY SIZE by Linda Bacon (yes, her name is Bacon; her maiden name was Ice Cream), which explains that to a large degree one's body does what it wants.

I would actually love some tips to overcome "winter obstacles" when going to the gym. I was in a pretty good workout streak (I do enjoy my gym routine) but then winter mode kicked in: sunrise is now way later, so it's pitch dark at the time I workout (which I find depressing, but it's the only time that works with my schedule) Also, it's way harder to leave home early when it's so cold! I'm trying to adapt my routine to overcome all of this. Any suggestions?
