Hey Melissa great video! You should do one on ur morning routine! I have a very hard time waking up in the morning and I'm really curious how other ppl pull it off!! Cheers from Montreal!
I like square nails. I'm getting my nails done tomorrow and I'm trying the new dip kind. I have heard this is better than shellac for your nails and several of my friends and coworkers have tried it and loved it!! Says it last 3-4 weeks.
Thank you for this information! I have trouble with my nails breaking, peeling & being thin. I did not know about the difference in shaping or keeping my cuticles moisturized. I will be working on these things. Do you have suggestions on how I can keep polish on my nails? I will apply it & either later that day or the next day it is chipping off. (I do wear gloves when I wash the dishes.) I enjoy having my nails polished, but I haven't done that in a long time.
Great video, thanks for the information. I sometimes use coconut oil on my hands, and it seems to work well, but then I also seem to always forget to buy shea butter when I'm at a beauty store, Ulta is my preference, and with coconut oil I already use it for cooking so it's always around. I have my own little business as a gunsmith, so I'm always working with my hands and I can't wear gloves when I'm working for a variety of reasons, so anything that I can pick up to help keep my hands Fromm looking like a rancher's is good for me. As for polish, I don't know how readily available it is in Canada, but I switched from gel to powder dip and haven't looked back. My nails always look great, well, mostly, as the powder infuses vitamins and at the same time acts almost like an acrylic, so my nails even without anything on them, are now stronger than ever. As for round versus square, I like almond shaped nails, but between the two choices I'll pick round.
Great video -The salons in California usually provide a glove for the UV light for years . FYI I still think it affects your hands in aging -Nailtek mini crystal file sold at ulta has a case ( I have had mine for like 7 plus years in my purse ) -Biotin ( natrol strawberry chewable flavor 5000 mcg cheaper at Costco ) I take 3 a day for my hair and my nails are growing like crazy and super strong .taste like candy - I took a foundation sample container from Nordstroms and keep oil in that for years and works great . Do not use Sephoras they open up -i will try your technique of using the cuticle as a guide to file your nails ( I always like square round )
I watched two videos, I love how much details you give ! Just subscribed :) And I definitely prefer round and rather short nails :) Greetings from Switzerland
Round! I put a top coat of CND Vinyl over my regular nail polish and it helps it last longer without chipping👍🏻💅🏻. And your skin looks really good in this video did you start a new skin care routine?
I have also used gel when I traveled, and I like square rounded. I always had very strong nails, however, in recent years they tend to break a little. I may try the rounded filing. Thanks or the tip.
I was a round nail girl for years, but always fought with breakage. I have recently (last 6 months) been making a square nail. So far I'm pleased with the results of stronger tougher nails. The big test will be cool Illinois winter season. They are brutal on my hands and nails, even with oils and lotions, 2 to 4 times a day. My struggle with regular nail polish is getting it to last more than 4 days and the hubby can't stand the smell. Just recently I spilled white polish on my brown leather chair. Any suggestions on how to get it off. Remover did nothing.
I like to round my nails as I find the corners snag otherwise. One of my challenges is my medication. Ever since I started on my medication my nails have gone brittle and ridged. I have to keep them short all the time. I use Essie nail repair for ridges and also moisturize regularly. Do you have any other tips on how to save my nails? One person told me that I should go acrylic or glue on nails.
I have problems with the corners of my nails snagging on clothing and certain fabric. Sometimes when I am cleaning with microfiber cloths, the material feels like it acts like it's sanding down my nail. it's very annoying! this mostly happens when the microfiber cloth is washed with fabric softener and one day I will rewash it and it dry it properly, but one thing at a time I guess, lol.
believe out or not, I got the Pure Ice brand gel nail polish from Dollar Tree and it's amazing ! I also got the top coat. I work with my hands everyday and it really stays on, lays me 4 to 5 days.
I like the square shape or "squoval" too. My biggest nail challenge? Keeping the darn things from breaking! I agree! They always break or chip away from home. I agree on the whole gel nail vs regular mani. But my regular manis chip the next day, so I wish I could get gel all the time (in an ideal world with no damage from UV rays, I guess). Good "tips" (excuse the pun! 😂)!
I like my nails oval and I only cut them after a shower or washing dishes. I hardly file, only the sharp edges, and use a crystal one. My nails used to have ridges and peel and were weak. Since incorporating these tips, I finally have long strong nails. I also eat lots of protein and use a hand lotion and cuticle oil almost daily. More in winter.
I have been using gel exclusively for one year and. my nails look great. I get it done every 3 to 4 weeks and I never have to worry about it in between
Really? They aren't weakened? Mine become very soft and flimsy after. But you are using gel nails I assume, perhaps that is different than how a Shellac/Gel manicure works.
Melissa Maker it's actually just that you have gotten used to the strength of the gel on your nails, when it's taken off your nail ls are exactly in the same condition as before if the nail tech has done the job properly. It's only how you perceive them, it's like a padded bra, it changes how your boobs look and feel whilst wearing it, but once you take it off they are back to the way they were softer and different shape. 😁
I have square with round edges naturally but its a pain to keep up with, very nik prone... My nails always seem to tear right at the corner of my nail bed too. Then if I'm not careful, I'll lose the nail and have to start all over. ugh
I love taking care of my own nails. But, I love to go to a nail salon for my toes. I usually will get a mani at that point. I do not allow them to buff/file my nail surface. They do it to smooth the nails, but it ruins my nails. Even if I go and have gel put on for a special occasion I do not let them mess with the surface of my nails. They get a bit grumpy about it, but it does not bother me. When it is done it works out just fine for me. 🤗 My other thing is leaving nail polish on too long. Once it starts to chip remove it all. It really makes the nail surface start to get weak.
Please talk also about moms like me who have tiny times for them but they love love taking care of themselves, teach us how to manage our time to be able to take care of 2 year old twins and my self, thanks
Oh my goodness, you sound like one busy lady. I am not a mom (yet) so I can't give advice on that specific topic, although I wish I could to help you out - it sounds like you need some ME time!
I find that my nail tips are kinda pale or maybe even a little 'grayish' rather than a nice, opaque, bright white. Any tips for whitening nail tips? I have heard that hydrogen peroxide and baking soda works sometimes, have you tried that?
I have to have rounder/almond nails because when my nails are square, the corners chip and peel and it drives me crazy. I also think long oval or almond nails is more suitable for my fingers because it makes my fingers look longer.
I like my nails round. I'm 81 and I do a lot of crafts, with glue, alcohol, polish remover and water. One finger on each hand peels a layer off the top. My thumb gets a split going into the nail. Is there any hope for me? Enjoyed your videos on the Clothes Steamer and Nail care. I subscribed.
Thanks for the helpful info, Melissa! Been 10 years since I've gotten them done, attended a wedding. Used to bite my nails all the time, but trying really hard not to these days. Still bite them occasionally, but much less than I used to!!
It's a tough habit to break but nice hands are very worth it. I wonder how you'd feel if you did get a manicure, maybe you would just love the look of your hands and try to keep them looking that way. Biting your nails is just a sign that you need to find another way to channel that nervous energy. I find that if I become aware of what is making me nervous, then the nervous reaction (e.g. nail biting) starts to dissipate.
Hey Melissa.. I think I'm the last person in the WORLD to join your channel, hi👋🏾😚. Melissa, having watched many of you and Chads inspirational videos, Hun I just lurve your diffuser.!!! Can I ask, where did you guys purchase from.? And how can I get one too🙏🏾😍
My dearest Melissa, I love your videos and you. But just beware the gloves don't solve a thing... uv go through them just as at the beach through an umbrella. That's why dermatologists warn that even under umbrella spf is a must.... Just a friendly remark 😘😉
D H For sure it does... remember us being told to wear spf even under the umbrella at the beach? For me it really makes sense. And nowadays sun is really harsh and problematic... Wishing you beautiful skin and lovely summer days 😇
i am lucky my nails grow quickly and long .except one the index finger although the nailbed does not look damaged it simply does not grow no matter the amount of moisturizer etc .A touch of polish and only i notice lol
My nails have been weak & peel my whole life no matter what. I've been taking a hair, skin & nails supplement for years...doesn't help a bit. My nails also break way down the side...I have to cut the nail off, otherwise it constantly catches on everything. I never heard nail shape should be what base of nail shape is. Even crystal nail files don't solve any nail problems for me. I'm out of ideas.
If you file them round, they don't break as often. I used to love square nails but I learned the hard way they weren't going to grow unless I filed them round.
Yes, your nails will tell you what they like. I am testing that shape now and crossing my fingers my nails will accept this change. BUT I've had two tips break already....oh mother.
I never thought of it as going with the shape of your cuticles, but mine are more rounded so it all makes sense!! Thanks for the video! You're awesome!
I wear my nails square. That way I don't file (hardly at all) along the sides of the nail and keep them from weakening. I don't get tears hardly at all.
Melissa!!! my cuticles do not attach to my nails and I am constantly getting infections in between my nail bed because of it!!! I havent painted my nails in soo long because I dont want the polish to cause inflammation. Do you know anything about cuticle health? Thank you, this video was great! ⭐️⭐️⭐️🙂🙂⭐️💕💕💕
These tips certainly apply to men as well. Honestly, check the blog post I put together. There is a lot more info there and within a couple of weeks you can have beautiful man hands, no joke. Your wife will love it!
I have TWO huge problems with my nails 1) The thumb nails breaking on the side at the base of my nail which means no matter how long my nail is I have to cut the WHOLE nail off ... so frustrating because it takes time for them to grow. I make sure I put oil on them prior to washing my hair because that's 80% of the time when it happens. As I'm washing /conditioning my hair a piece of hair gets under my nail when I remove my hand from washing my hair and I feel it get caught in that little crack/Break at the base of my thumbnails .... hope this is not too long but if you have any suggestions so this can stop I'd greatly appreciate it! I do NOT go to the salon to get me nails done. 2) How can I make my nails more 'FLEXIBLE' so I'd they happen to hit or bend on something they won't automatically break (that's another issue I tend to deal with) Thank you #MelissaMaker
I've always loved rounded nails. They look feminine, lovely, and [who cares that it makes me sound old-fashioned! who really cares?! but...] lady-like. Never knew there was a rhyme or reason about which shape is more natural to your body... square or rounded. I'm going to have to think about that... Should my nails really be a little more squared off? Maybe they wouldn't tear as often. I always remember biting my nails. Mom scolded me; Grandma scolded me. Didn't matter. It wasn't until I started college that I was able to finally break the habit. Gram drove me nuts when she'd drum her fingernails on the table - I'd scold her ! . Then I grew out my nails and I could drum along with her too lol. Then we both got scolded ! What goes around, comes around. LOL I don't like that there's no way to have all 10 nails perfectly & evenly shaped. Even worse - paying the nail salon for imperfection! 'that's messed up!' Love the look of longer nails but I can't wear 'em. Interferes with typing (double the typos!) and feels like an ingrown nail. Hey - that's something I'd like to see in a vid - what makes fingernails tend to tear? How can I prevent that? Love your CMS vids - I'm addicted!
Love your videos! Wish you would talk more about cuticle care and not just nail care. Also I thought the violet background was a bit hard on my eyes and made you look washed out.
Oh really? That's frustrating. Hopefully there's a very good reason for that. I know Starbucks employees are not able to wear nail polish for food handling / cleanliness which I understand.
I have used cuticle oils, too. I'm out of ideas.
Pat Wagner my nails did the same thing. The only way I have been able to stop it is to ALWAYS wear nail polish. If I go even 2 days without polish they start peeling in layers again. Good luck!
Try buffing them - that helps with the ridges. Get a gentle buffing block. I do this every few weeks and it helps to smooth everything out. I think ridges are quite natural.
I bite my nails. I have done everything to stop. From gloves, moisturiser, bitter nail polish to a psychologist. Nothing happens. And I do it unintentionally ;( I have given up and, to be honest, I do not care at all now. I always get a gel manicure with extensions when I have a very formal event. But I do not go to the salon every 3 weeks to replace it because it costs more than I think it is worth.
I got it. It's a very difficult habit to break. My mom has bitten her nails for years and it is something she still struggles with. I think it's about channeling that nervous energy somewhere else. At least that's what I have seen help my mom when she has had a reprieve. Good luck with it!
When I was little, I bit my nails and destroyed them. What saved me was painting my nails. By having them pretty all the time, I was able to stop. Good luck :)
great video with basic informations. one product kills my nails :acetone. really it is poison i found an oïl remover and it saves my nails! yes oïl is nails food. like you almond oïl is my favorite because dry super fast. my favorite shape is square-oval.
Challenges? Regular nail polish chips within 36 hours -- whether I do it, or whether I have them done. Ugh. That drives me to gel, although I'm taking a break from it now.
Yes I find that too. I am now buying the at home polishes that are designed to last for longer. While they don't keep for nearly as long as Shellac does, they at least don't chip for a couple of days. It's very frustrating, I totally agree.
The nail polish chips off after wearing it for 2-3 days...i found i need to let my nails have a break between different colors otherwise my nails itself chips off...like they are weak but i take omega 3, lots of water, etc. Doesn't make sense.
I know - it feels very perplexing. I know biotin and gelatine can help with developing stronger nails. I have added gelatine powder to my breakfast each morning. It is flavourless but it is said to help with nail strength, among many other things.
I prefer rounded nails. I have problems with peeling nails at the tips and hangnails. I wash my hands a lot but don't like the greasy feel of hand lotion.
Such a great video and I love all the tips
Hey Melissa great video! You should do one on ur morning routine! I have a very hard time waking up in the morning and I'm really curious how other ppl pull it off!! Cheers from Montreal!

Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Lots of great info - thanks!
You are most welcome!
Great Tips!!!! I'm going to get one of those files - I've never had one before. Keeping a repair kit in your purse is a great idea. Thanks... Deb :-)
The file makes a huge difference. I hope you like the little kit idea!
Melissa you have beautiful nails and beautiful hands for sure. You are blessed :)
nice vid! would really love to see a what's in my bag video...want to know what essentials you carry on your purse everyday. 😊❤
I've had my nail tek crystal nail filer for years. It's wonderful

Almond is always my preferred shape :)
Yes that's so pretty - but I do find it hard to do daily things with that shape e.g. type or text, maybe that's just me!
'I could be 70 but my hand look great!!!' Im Dead!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂

Yeah try it out!
Rounded! :) Love your videos!
I was hoping you would cover ways to strengthen your nails. I know you briefly covered it on CMS.
I like the squared nails
I like that look as well.

Melissa Maker I am using the gel shellac nail polish on my real nails and I have to get them cut every time because they get so long
Melissa Maker that's interesting a nail tech on Insta says that the techs are the culprits for that. @tiffanynailedit is her name
Melissa Maker it's actually just that you have gotten used to the strength of the gel on your nails, when it's taken off your nail ls are exactly in the same condition as before if the nail tech has done the job properly. My nails peel from the top. A nail stylist said it was due to my sweaty hands. I don't like wearing lotions or oils due to my sweaty hands either
LED is used almost everywhere for gel nails.
Love rounded nails
They are so pretty!
Melissa Maker yes I feel like they elongate the fingers
I totally agree with that, I think there is something very classy about rounded nails!
hey melissa! i have a problem with biting my nails :(
I've tried polish, too....but you're right...it has to be constantly maintained or nails will peel. Thank you for trying to help!
I have square with round edges naturally but its a pain to keep up with, very nik prone... My nails always seem to tear right at the corner of my nail bed too. Then if I'm not careful, I'll lose the nail and have to start all over. ugh

I’ve had them round and almond for a long time but I recently got tapered squares/ballerinas so it really depends
I always have had rounded nails because your fingers are naturally round. Also, I love the style and colors of this video.
Oh thank you so much!
Melissa Maker you are most welcome
If I followed my cuticle my thumbs would be square and the rest round.
I have to have rounder/almond nails because when my nails are square, the corners chip and peel and it drives me crazy. I also think long oval or almond nails is more suitable for my fingers because it makes my fingers look longer.

I think her logic is that the glove would protect the sunblock from being removed by the nail professional :) But, yes, you are completely right!!
That's good to know - thank you!
So does the sun go through clothes as well? seems like a similar material to the gloves
D H For sure it does... remember us being told to wear spf even under the umbrella at the beach? For me it really makes sense. And nowadays sun is really harsh and problematic... Wishing you beautiful skin and lovely summer days 😇
Melissa Maker You're the most welcome 🤗😘
I have blunt tipped fingers so yeah, square tipped nails to match
I like my nails square shaped. For whatever reason my index finger naturally ends up round.
Isn't that funny how it happens sometimes? I find that with certain nails they just want to be one shape, regardless of what I do!
Deirdre Hughes That happens to my nails too!
i am lucky my nails grow quickly and long .except one the index finger although the nailbed does not look damaged it simply does not grow no matter the amount of moisturizer etc .A touch of polish and only i notice lol
My nails have been weak & peel my whole life no matter what. I've been taking a hair, skin & nails supplement for years...doesn't help a bit. My nails is super weak, always break from the tip to the back. It's awful two of my nails slip down the middle.
I prefer to have rounded nails because the edges when they're squared bothers me and I'll ruin them (try to "even" it out by tearing them down)
If you file them round, they don't break as often. I used to love square nails but I learned the hard way they weren't going to grow unless I filed them round.
I like squoval but my nails don't so I went back to rounded.

Jane Smith have you gone to a dermatologist? That sounds bad to deal with.
I prefer round thats the shape i basically file them into.
Soo...make one for the guys or make a hand make over video and use me as the project. My hands are horrible and my wife will thank you.

I do NOT go to the salon to get me nails done.
2) How can I make my nails more 'FLEXIBLE' so I'd they happen to hit or bend on something they won't automatically break (that's another issue I tend to deal with)

LOL
I don't like that there's no way to have all 10 nails perfectly & evenly shaped. Even worse - paying the nail salon for imperfection! 'that's messed up!'
Love the look of longer nails but I can't wear 'em.
Used to enjoy getting my nails done until my work stopped me from getting them done! Now all I'm able to get is a clear polish which I hate.
Oh really? That's frustrating. Hopefully there's a very good reason for that. I know Starbucks employees are not able to wear nail polish for food handling / cleanliness which I understand.
I have used cuticle oils, too. I'm out of ideas.
Pat Wagner my nails did the same thing. The only way I have been able to stop it is to ALWAYS wear nail polish. If I go even 2 days without polish they start peeling in layers again. Good luck!
my thumb nails seem to crack sideways and it hurts. I use nail glue until it grows out.
My nails aren't smooth...they have ridges going vertically from cuticle to tip. I hate it
Try buffing them - that helps with the ridges. Get a gentle buffing block. I do this every few weeks and it helps to smooth everything out. I think ridges are quite natural.
I wonder if a dermatologist would be of help?
I use to love the square shape but since having my son I've switched to a round shape it tends to be safer with him ... I don't want to scratch him
Square or rounded...depends on the mood! :-)
My nails break easily..I've never had nice nails.
Have you tried a nail strengthener before?
Melissa Maker Yes and it just makes them peel. I should probably try the shea butter.
Btw I ❤️your Makers cloths!😀
great video with basic informations. one product kills my nails :acetone. really it is poison i found an oïl remover and it saves my nails! yes oïl is nails food. like you almond oïl is my favorite because dry super fast. my favorite shape is square-oval.
Heaps of places now use LED lights for gel polish.
Definately round or oval natural nails
Rounded!!
I feel only really good fingers can pull off square. If I get them square tipped, they just end up looking fatter and more manly!
How would you repair years of neglect, not abuse, nail care. Keeping them clean, clipped & occasionally using lotion has been my routine.
Square please!
Melissa Maker Do you have a favorite brand or two that last a bit longer?
I like oval shaped nails. I find that my manicure lasts a lot longer with the oval shape.
Squared nails. My problem is my nails peel! Ugh!!!!
YES - maybe try rounded and see if you notice a difference. I DID!
Rounded square. Some call it squround. Some call It squoval.
I'd do her nails ANYTIME
Squoval...good compromise...
Bitting my nails😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
The nail polish chips off after wearing it for 2-3 days...i found i need to let my nails have a break between different colors otherwise my nails itself chips off...like they are weak but i take omega 3, lots of water, etc. Doesn't make sense.
I know - it feels very perplexing. I know biotin and gelatine can help with developing stronger nails. I have added gelatine powder to my breakfast each morning. It is flavourless but it is said to help with nail strength, among many other things.
Square nails
I prefer rounded nails. I have problems with peeling nails at the tips and hangnails. I wash my hands a lot but don't like the greasy feel of hand lotion.
Squared
This video is too quiet, I can barely hear it
SQUARE
Square nails for me.
People notice to much about themselves- and you. I thought this was Melissa maker
I have ridges, which make my polish chip.
Have you tried buffing, and have you tried ridge filler?
Yes I do some buffing, but my nails are thin. I am 62 yrs old and I think my age has some to do with that.
