Melissa (and everyone)! You have got to try water kefir! It's similar to kombucha, but it has a milder taste and carbonates more. It leaves you feeling like you're drinking pop/soda. You can easily make it at home thus making it so much cheaper than store-bought kombucha. You just need some water kefir grains, cane sugar, filtered water, and a bit of organic fruit juice to flavor it. Drinking this stuff every day really has changed my life. I feel more in balance and no longer have intense cravings for any kind of food. There are tons of YT videos showing how to make it. I encourage you, or anyone reading this, to get some grains and experiment with it.
so the timing of this video is insanely amazing! not even an hour ago my husband and I were talking about gut health during lunch. he is on a strict SCD diet for colitis. he has a very limited diet, but feels like he needs to diversify his diet to promote the good bacteria. and I've been on several rounds of antibiotics the last year and I'm sure my guts are a mess, too. perfect and amazing timing!
Fantastic, I really hope you give these are try. They are so helpful for getting that good bacteria back in your gut. I go nuts with them after antibiotics especially!
I recently started having a lot of mental problems and we believe that it is coming from my gut. I am missing tons of my good bacteria and my stomach is breaking down because of it. I had to start a new diet 2 weeks ago cutting out a lot of foods that I could be intolerant to and going back to a very basic diet. I also have started taking probiotcs and need to start eating fermented foods. I had heard about kombucha before but wasn't too sure about it until I watched this. I found this video SO helpful! I am definitely going to pick some of this up today!
I would love to see a kimchi or kombucha video! I'm experiencing my own "gut issues" so I know the pain of an imbalanced gut. Anyways, love your videos! Always so inspiring :)
Melissa Maker - I love the video. quick note, although it is often called one, the kombucha SCOBY is not a mushroom. SCOBY stands for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast. (no mushrooms or fungi here!) keep up the strong work!
I'm not allowed to drink that kambucha since I'm pregnant. But I'm on 9 months now, so not much longer. I think you should write on the description that it's not for pregnant women. (Not sure even if I can drink that while breastfeeding but I'm hoping yes). Love your Chanell, always fun to watch!
Kombucha is contraindicated for pregnant people because it acts as a blood thinner. It should be okay to drink while breastfeeding, but please check with your doctor before you do! It is also important to stop drinking Kombucha before having surgery (at least six weeks ahead of time.)
great video. I am from Germany and we definately don't eat Sauerkraut for every meal. 😉 some likes to eat this with meat but there are few ones, like me, who don't like to eat Sauerkraut on a regular basis (or at all) ☺
Sauerkraut is a side dish that you can have with bratwurst or roast pork. There is also sauerkraut salad and sauerkraut soup but I never had one of these. All things cabbage are popular in Germany: red and green cabbage, sauerkraut, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, romanesco, kohlrabi, savoy, ... Just like some Italians who don't like pizza or pasta not every German likes cabbage. And we definitely don't eat them around the clock. But we are called "the krauts" for a reason... Henriette
I used to have major lactose intolerance issues. I started taking foods and medicine loaded with probiotics and I can now tolerate dairy. It didn't happen over night but it made all the difference in the world!
Amazing video! This is something I've been working on lately getting a healthy gut, just been drinking lemon water, cinnamon, turmeric and ginger tea, putting chia seeds. I want to try kefir !
Please make a kimchi how to video! I already drink gts kombucha. I never thought about using miso soup as a drink or something to add to your drink. I will give kefir a try...
Helo, I hope you are well. I was wondering what type of baking soda do you use? Although I have just turned 15 I love your videos and I think these tips and hints you give the world are very beneficial.
I would be interested in both! I have tried kombucha -but honestly, the thought of it being fermented freaked me out...now that I have seen this video, I'm interested again. I love sauerkraut and had not really thought about it being fermented...hmmmm.
If you like fermented cabbage like kimchi or sauerkraut you may try to ferment other veggies to. Put some carrots or cauliflower or other hard veg into a jar that went through hot water dishwasher cycle, pour over luke warm or cold water with some sea /himalayan salt dissolved in it. Leave it in room temp for a few days or a week and check on it from time to time. It should smell and taste salty and sauer, veggies are get sofer over time as well. This is a very basic version but you can add there some spices like mustard seeds, horseradish, pepper, chilli whatever you like. Get experimental :) I would recommend using for fermenting water that has been boiled first to avoid bacteria which could disturb the process. Happy fermenting everybody!
Question, does Kombucha become an alcohol? We no longer drink alcohol and I have always wondered. I have seen it at the stores but no looked closely. Thank you for the info. I have issues and think many of these things are a good place to start.
From GT's website FAQs: What about the concerns regarding slightly elevated levels of alcohol? We addressed these concerns by modifying the probiotic ratio of the Kombucha. Without compromising the product’s potency, we were able to reduce the opportunity for alcohol to increase during its shelf life. TBH when I drink it, I do get a bit of a buzz, but it doesn't have an alcohol content on the bottle. It is hard to say and I wouldn't want to misguide you!
Melissa Maker thank you for your response. I still plan on giving it a try, but truly appreciate the information. I do know that when I consume or do something that my body REALLY enjoys I still get that little buzz. I am fine with that. DH and I just made the personal choice to not consume too many 'tini's while our daughter was young....and we were old. 😉
Thanks, will definitely have to try some of these. I follow wheat belly by William Davis MD. He has great books wheat 🌾 and what it does to your belly and whole body. Thanks again Melissa, love all of your videos.
7:39 Where did you find the information that Europeans eat sauerkraut at every meal? They'll eat it once a month or so, and for many people it's more like once or twice a year.
I would say it depends who you ask ;) for me sauerkraut is a base for most of winter dinner salads, which means I eat it usually about 5 times a week. Back in the days when there were no supermarkets and people had to deal with preserving foods themselves, sauerkraut was one of a very few fresh veggies available during winter so they ate it very often. This shows why generalisation Europeans do or don't do something is risky, we vary a lot between countries and even regions.
My background is Polish and so I was weaned on sauerkraut! 😁 I keep it in the fridge and eat some almost everyday. I need to try kombucha again. I got a flavor I didn't like at all and it kind of turned me off.
Question: If boiling water kills the bacteria in the miso paste, won't they die as well when the sourdough bread is being baked at approximately twice that temperature?
I use water that's been boiled and then cooled so as to not kill the bacteria. The bread apparently doesn't kill off the bacteria - unless you know it does?
Does the kombucha drink specify what kind of tea it uses? I've been living with a tentative diagnosis/working theory (when there's a lot of nuance to something, in this case a lot of disorders/diseases that have very similar symptoms, I don't consider myself officially diagnosed until I see a specialist) of IBS and have been put on a low fodmap diet where certain teas are fine and others are not. When I stick to it, it works really well, so I don't try something new outside of special occasions unless it's a low fodmap food or drink.
Funnily enough, the brand of kombucha you mention was on sale at a local grocery store today (5/$10) so I quickly snatched up 5 flavors that I could have. ^^
On the back of the bottle it should say what kind of tea it is (green, black, etc.). That's such a great deal for kombucha, consider yourself very lucky!
Oh course I start thinking about how to have all these items in a single meal XD sourdough sandwich with kimchi as a topping with a miso sauce, kombucha to drink and desert is a kefir based smoothie or parfait
Apple cider is made from fermented apples (and additional ingredients) - depending on how long the fermentation process goes, apple cider will become alcoholic and beyond that it will become vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is the end product of the apple fermentation process :)
eyecandie2004 apple cider in the US is just pressed apple juice, however apple cider in the UK and mainland Europe is a fermented drink. Pressed apple juice is fermented into a fizzy alcoholic beverage (you’d call this hard cider in the US)! This can be further fermented into apple cider vinegar.
Also do NOT buy a scoby often people will give them away. I didn't have anyone near me who had one so I used the same Kombucha brand you buy in the store. Just Google it. It takes a little bit more time because you are using a tiny scoby but it was easy enough to do without buying an official scoby.
Can you eat fermented foods and not so healthy food(fast food, or restaurant food, treats, desserts etc) at the same time? Will the good bacteria win the "battle/war" going on in the gut so you can enjoy both food groups?* (*fermented and not healthy food) And will the good side of the bacteria maintain the healthy balance you get ALL the benefits of fermented foods?

Keren Meir I was just about to get it until I saw your post. I'm three months now. Thanks for your post
Kombucha is contraindicated for pregnant people because it acts as a blood thinner. It should be okay to drink while breastfeeding, but please check with your doctor before you do!

Is apple cider a fermented drink?
eyecandie2004 Yes! I've used Bragg's Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar for years to help with acid reflux and IBS.
Apple cider is made from fermented apples (and additional ingredients) - depending on how long the fermentation process goes, apple cider will become alcoholic and beyond that it will become vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is the end product of the apple fermentation process :)

I tasted that synergy drink in the video and it was not good lol. I am sorry i tossed it though, before actually trying it. A waste of money too.

I take probiotic 10 pills..makes my tummy feel good
It's not a mushroom.
Got that, thanks.
I love kimchi.
Kimchi without the hot spices.
You can always leave the spicy pepper out, it's a pretty flexible recipe!
Beer
Lifeway makes 99% lactose-free kefir!
Uhhh.. Just the thought of these products makes me vomit... Including sourdough bread because it triggers a horrible gallbladder crisis!
Oh no...
Do you drink coffee?
You would love kefir if you drank raw milk kefir not the pasteurize garbage no wonder it didn’t work for you
I know what book you read before recording the video ;) #brainmaker
That's why Indians eat fermented food called Idli since ages. Now the West has woken up. 🤣🤣🤣
You just educated the world.......😑
So you don't like milk.. ? My husband likes cream in his cereal.
Yuck - milk makes me want to barf!
